TO ALL NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS
Dear All,
Once again, I congratulate you on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of the
University of Ibadan on your admission to the distance learning mode of the
University of Ibadan. This message is to provide certain basic information
relating to your registration as a* bona fide* student of the University of
Ibadan. On registration, you are entitled to all the rights and privileges
of a student in the University of Ibadan. However, you also have certain
responsibilities which ultimately require that you must be of good conduct
and behave in a manner that does not embarrass the University of Ibadan. In
essence, you must be worthy in character and learning.
It is however important to let you know that, the Centre is the arm of the
University of Ibadan and the platform to all its distance learning –
certificate, Diploma, Degree and Postgraduate courses. For these courses,
the admission, course contents and graduation requirements and the worth of
the certificates are the same as with students on the regular modes. Also,
your facilitators (teachers) are the same. These courses are run on the
Open Distance Learning mode which is different from Part Time study. The
University of Ibadan does not run any of her programmes on Part Time basis.
It is therefore pertinent for you to note that you are not on a part time
course. For better understanding, it is important to provide more
information on what ODL mode which is little understood is all about.
What is ODL mode?
It is the driving force for distance learning education and it is according
to Mobolaji Ogunsanya (2011), Professor and former Director of the
University of Ibadan External Studies Programme that metamorphosed into the
University’s Distance Learning Centre supposed to
*... run at a distance to learners in order for both the learner and the
provider of this mode of education to maximally enjoy the inherent benefits
derivable from distance learning. As a result, the provider can then admit
hundreds of thousands of learners at a time while the learner goes through
his/her study in a manner that is least disruptive of his/her work and
normal life pattern.*
In Nigeria, the Guidelines for Open and Distance Learning in Nigerian
Universities (2009) by the National Universities Commission
< http://www.nuc.edu.ng/ nucsite/File /ODL%20REVISED% 20GUIDELINES%20FOR%20NIGERIAN% 20UNIVERSITIES.pdf>,
the body that took more interest in distance education after the document
was categorical on what ODL is all about when it states that:
*ODL means that students should not be required to attend classes or have
face-to-face contact, unless there are compelling reasons to justify it
such as examinations, periodic facilitation and practicum.*
It should be noted that, ‘periodic facilitation’ does not include
interactive session the way we have it now and it definitely excludes
outright teaching.
On mode of delivery, it states among others, that,
*• ODL programmes shall be predicated on a pedagogy that is led by
resources and not reliant on face-to-face intervention.*
*• Students should be able to register to study anywhere in Nigeria or any
part of the world with a common standard of service at any study centre.*
*• The study centre system should offer both academic and social support.
Study centres should act as the focal points of learning communities and
have agreed standards of accommodation in facilities and equipment.*
*• Students should be expected to be able to have access to ICT to assist
their learning. For specific programmes, functional internet access would
be required for all study centres.*
*• Effective marking and feedback*
*• Involves the use of automatically marked ICT- based Assignments to
reduce work load*
From the above which serves as the barometer for distance education in
Nigeria, it is clear that, the distinguishing factor between ODL and non
ODL modes is the fact that it largely reduces face to face contacts between
the teacher who becomes a mere facilitator and the learner and its largely
driven by information technology. So it allows for self paced and flexible
learning. Under this mode, a student is able to stay at his preferred place
of abode and have the benefit of higher education.
Therefore, as a student on the ODL mode, you will be entitled to:
*i. **A Tablet device which is paid for during
registration. This warehouses all course materials for courses you
registered for and provide the platform for all activities. You can work on
the platform both on and offline.*
*ii. **Two face-to-face Interactive sessions (IS), one at
the beginning after Orientation and Matriculation at the University of
Ibadan and another before examinations. In between the two IS, you will be
required to complete your Continous Assessment. The first Interactive
session is to assist you in studying the course materials while the second
is for revision with your facilitators.*
