PoliticsNigerian Association Of Resident Doctors Hail Oyebanji Over Payment Of Allowance by kuneryxy(op): 2:42pm On Jun 01, 2024
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commended Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji for being the first Governor in the country to pay the new hazard allowance and the newly adjusted Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) to resident doctors.

The association, in a letter co-signed by its President, Dr Dele Olaitan and Dr. Anaduaka Obinna, and dated June 1, 2024, said the payment of the hazard allowance and adjusted CONMESS would “go a long way to encourage resident doctors as well as improve their commitment to work and training”.

NARD equally noted with gratitude that the government of Biodun Oyebanji was the second to pay the Medical Residency Training Funds among State Tertiary Health Institutions in the Southwest region.

The Association expressed joy that Oyebanji’s gesture came at “a critical period of economic hardship during which many of our members are seeking to write their Part 1 and Part 2 examinations in the Colleges of Training”.

While commending Oyebanji for his unwavering support and commitment to health care delivery in the State, the resident doctors stressed that the Governor’s gesture “is worthy of emulation” as it projects the Biodun Oyebanji-led administration as “one which listens and a glaring example for others to follow”.

“We wish to express our immense gratitude for your continuous commitment to the furtherance of the Residency Training Programme in Ekiti State Teaching Hospital especially as demonstrated in prioritizing the welfare of our members. Sir, you were the first governor to pay the new Hazard allowance and the newly adjusted CONMESS. We have also noted that your government was the second to pay Medical Residency Training Funds among State Tertiary Health Institutions in the Southwest region”.

“At this critical period of economic hardship during which many of our members are seeking to write their Part 1 and Part 2 examinations in the Colleges of Training, the payment of these funds will go a long way to encourage the resident doctors as well as improve their commitment ti work and training. It is our belief that this feat is worthy of emulation and project your government as one which listens, a glaring example for others to follow”, the letter reads.

```TEXT OF THE STATE BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY
DR. KAYODE FAYEMI, CON
GOVERNOR, EKITI STATE, NIGERIA
ON ENDSARS PROTEST
ENTITLED:APPEAL FOR PEACE IN EKITI AND SOUTH-WEST
OCTOBER 23,2020
Ekiti Kete, I address you today in respect of the current security situation in our State, south-west zone and Nigeria as a whole which has necessitated the imposition of curfew. The events of the last one week has been deeply troubling and of a great concern to me and many patriotic citizens of our dear State.
You would recall that on October 9, 2020, some concerned youths organised what was clearly a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti, just like their counterparts in other parts of Nigeria. The protest was commendably peaceful and their demand was justified. The main crux of their demand was to put an end to police brutality which was exemplified by the defunct State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a department of the police which had become notorious for very many professional misconduct.
This protest lasted for about eleven days without any security threats either to the protesters or the public. In fact, I instructed the security agencies to ensure that none of the protesters was molested. You would also recall that I addressed the protesters who picketed the roads leading to the Government House on October 16, 2020 while I was on my way to the Ekiti House of Assembly for the State of the State Address I told them that I was fully in support of the protest and their main demand. Even though an attempt was made to attack my convoy later at the House of Assembly, I held the view that the attack had nothing to do with the peaceful protesters I had earlier addressed, but rogue elements trying to take advantage of the situation.
Things took a dangerous turn over the weekend as miscreants took advantage of the protest to launch an unimaginable level of violence on the public here in Ekiti and also in other contiguous states. Although, violence relating to the protest in Ekiti has been limited due to the proactive steps taken by government, the experience in other parts of the south west, especially Lagos has been horrendous and deplorable.
On Monday, 19th October, 2020, I met with the President in my capacity as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to deliver a clear message from my colleagues on the need for a broadcast and careful handling of the protest which was degenerating in many States..
Now that the President has spoken acknowledging the demands and explaining what government is doing about them. I want to thank the leadership of the protest movement in Ekiti for calling off the protest. The import of the protest has been largely achieved. The Federal Government has banned the SARS department in response to the five demands made by the EndSARS movement and those held in SARS detention centres have been released. In Ekiti, as in many States of the Federation, a Judicial Panel of Enquiry to look into the cases of abuses, extra-judicial acts and general misconduct which led to the protest, has been set up. A restitution fund to compensate for the losses of the victims of such abuses is also established while other demands like increase in salaries of police officers is being attended to.
I urge our youths who want nothing but a nation that serves and benefit all to show restraint in the way they pursue their demands. I fully understand and endorse the far-reaching message that the EndSARS protest articulated. It is generally a protest not just against brutality by police officers, but a wakeup call to all of us in positions of responsibility and the entire citizenry to have a new direction in the manner we handle the governance of the nation. It is a collective reminder to us that the urgency to act more decisively on how to improve the lot of our people is now. We must not let this seed to be emasculated in the crevice of violence that has attended the protest. This message has been well made. It is time for meaningful engagement. To this end, I am announcing the expansion of the mandate of our Youth Development Council with a view to deepening the State’s engagement with our youths and ensuring speedier implementation of the Ekiti Youth Agenda in partnership with all critical stakeholders in the youth constituency.
As a result of those who unleashed mayhem and brigandage on private and public property, the state government was compelled to impose a 24 hour curfew on the State. While calm has been restored in most parts of the State, we have decided to watch development over the weekend before deciding on next steps. It is for this reason that I have extended the 24 hour curfew on the State until 0600hrs on Monday, 26th October 2020. This painful action was taken in the best interest of ourselves to ensure that the crisis does not escalate since criminals enjoy mimicking violent occurrences in other places. It is my hope that we will not have cause to extend the curfew any further. I want to urge all our traditional institutions, religious bodies, politicians and community leaders to use this weekend to engage the youth in their respective communities to give peace a chance. To this end, the curfew will allow an exception for Friday Jumat and Saturday and Sunday worship in churches.
In the meantime, security agencies have been instructed to exercise judicious restraint in response to the tense situation. The intention of Government is to ensure peace, under no condition should indiscretional responses be allowed to escalate the situation. I therefore appeal for the cooperation of our people and the security personnel who are doing a tremendous job to ensure that we live in peace.
As for those who may still want to test the resolve of government by engaging in violent action leading to a breakdown of law and order, I urge you to think twice because I will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law against such errant conduct.
Finally, let me commiserate with those who have suffered losses as a result of the wanton destruction that occurred in the State. May the Good Lord heal our land and give us strength to bring joy and succour where there is sadness, despair and despondency.
Thank you
Alale Ekiti a gbe a.
Fayemi Extends Curfew in Ekiti, inaugurates judicial panel on Police brutality
…. tenders apology to victims of EndSARS protests
The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has extended the 24-hour curfew that was imposed in all parts of the State earlier in the week till Monday, 26th of October to enable security agencies restore law and order in the state as well as guarantee the security of lives and properties of the people.
This, he said became necessary in order to forestall unwholesome conduct of some miscreants who capitalised on the ENDSARS protests to perpetrate criminal acts including robbing, killing and destruction of public and private properties.
Governor Fayemi disclosed this on Thursday while inaugurating members of Ekiti State Judicial Panel of Enquiry Into Allegations of Human Rights Violations Against Police Officers, Including SARS Operatives at the Governor's Office, Ado Ekiti.
The Governor also announced the establishment of a Victims Compensation Fund to enable speedy payment of monetary compensation to deserving victims. This, according to him would enable the panel respond appropriately to the urgent needs of victims of rights violations.
Governor Fayemi, at the brief event, also apologised to victims of the ENDSARS protests in the state and assured the people of the state that his government would continue to take deliberate measures to protect lives and properties.
Dr Fayemi said his administration would not tolerate criminalisation of young people in the State, adding that thorough investigation into cases of brutalisation of innocent citizens during the course of the protests would also be carried out and promptly acted upon.
He said: “In the meantime the existing curfew announced by the State Government on Tuesday October 20, 2020 is further extended until Monday October 26, 2020.
“It is important that I emphasized that this curfew is not aimed at abusing the rights of our citizens or make life difficult for the people but to enable government carry out its main responsibility of guaranteeing the security of lives and properties of our citizens."
The inauguration of the Judicial Panel, chaired by a retired Judge, Justice Cornelius Akintayo, according to the Governor was the first step by his administration to demonstrate commitment to the concerns of ENDSARS protesters, adding that the panel would avail them the opportunity to speak openly about underlying issues of the agitations.
Other members of the panel include Mr Dipo Ayeni (Rtd Commissioner of Police); Mrs Yetunde Kolawole, State Counsel (representing the Honourable Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice); Mrs Kikelomo Owolabi (Chairperson, Nigerian Bar Association, Ikere Ekiti Branch); Mr Rotimi Ojomoyela (Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists, Ekiti State Council); Mr Jamiu Adigun (Representative, National Human Rights Commission); Mr Adeyinka Opaleke (Representative, Legal Aid Council of Nigeria); Mr Akin Rotimi; Ms Caroline Fakinlede (Ekiti State Youths Representative); Ms Omowumi Deborah (Youth Representative); Mr Asiwaju Oladimeji (Youth Representative) and Mr Abiola Johnson-Ogunleye (Ekiti State Students Representative).
Dr Fayemi listed the terms of reference of the panel to include receiving and investigating complaints of police brutality or other related extra-judicial killings.
The panel, amongst others, is expected to receive and investigate complaints of violence against individuals, police officers and other members of the security agencies in every part of Ekiti State in the course of the protest. It would also evaluate evidence presented and other surrounding circumstances in other to draw conclusions on the validity of the complaints received.
Dr Fayemi who said the panel had six months to carry out their assignment, added that they were expected to recommend compensation and other remedial measures where appropriate.
He also disclosed that the Chairman of the panel would provide monthly briefings to the Honourable Attorney- General & Commissioner for Justice, Hon Wale Fapohunda to further enhance the speedy consideration of all complaints.
He said: “The inauguration of this Ekiti State Judicial Panel of Inquiry into Allegations of Human Rights Violation against Police Officers including Officer of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) and other person is an important first step in responding to the concern from ENDSARS protesters.
"We have deliberately selected members of the panel to reflect our peculiar situation in Ekiti State. It is no coincidence that we have a large number of youth representatives on the panel. It is provide an opportunity for our youth population to have better understanding of the workings of our justice Institutions.
"It is our expectation that this Judicial panel will give them an opportunity to speak openly about their experience to enable us have a better understanding of the depth of the problem and most importantly find a sustainable solution."
The Governor further urged community leaders across the state to appeal to youth groups in their communities to give peace a chance and let government commence the process of responding to all the issues that have been subject of the agitations.
Even the student doctor was promoted because of my case in Lagos island general hospital.
Hepatitis B may scar the liver (cirrhosis) and lead to liver cancer. Hepatitis C: Formerly known as "non-A, non-B hepatitis," hepatitis C is the most common form of viral hepatitis. ... Hepatitis C also infects up to 90 percent of HIV-infected injection drug users. And it is more severe in patients with HIV.
