I worked for 18 years with a commercial bank. Started as an Executive Trainee (Teller) and was a Manager leading a team in IT when I left. I only spent 3 years in operations before the opportunity to move to IT came up and I was prepared for it. Before the IT opportunity came, as a teller, I had volunteered to be the branch's IT rep helping with the IT stuff that wasn't too complicated. This gave me the opportunity to get some basic IT training. I also became a trainer for other tellers joining the bank and all this brought me into the spotlight. I agree there are limited opportunities to grow in the bank but there are people who still have it good without having any connections. Diligence on the job pays big time and for those in the faith, keeping your connection with God intact also matters as His voice was a constant guide for me throughout my career. It allowed me to take the risky step of walking away from the job as I knew my time there had come to an end and holding on to that job would not benefit me in the long run. Just writing this to encourage anyone like me to just keep putting in your best and trust God as He always comes through at the exact right time. Still in IT now but a totally different sector that is less stressful and allows me to work fully from home (with much better pay). For the contract staff, I saw quite a number of contract staff get converted to full staff (after a very long time) and some of them are still doing very well in the bank I left. I agree it was a very unfair practice keeping them on as contract staff for so long but there are some genuine cases where the affected staff are not prepared for the opportunity to move/ convert. Just my one kobo... |
Reminds me of a similar experience I had years ago. I moved to an old house somewhere in Lagos mainland and noticed the electricity supply was low current in the 4 flats (each flat had a separate post paid meter and separate cables bringing in electricity from the pole). Our neighbours in the the nearby buildings didnt have that problem so I contacted PHCN. When they got to the house and inspected, they confirmed the issue was from the cable bringing electricity from the pole (that it was weak and very old) so we were asked to pay for new cables. The Landlord who lived in the next building was informed and he was unwilling to bear the cost so I paid for the cable to our flat to be replaced (even though I knew that should not be my responsibility). Once the cables were fixed, our electricity current levels became normal. A few months later, we had another issue with very high bills (compared to our neighbours in the other flats) and the PHCN guys had to come check again. This time they noticed our meter was now supplying 2 flats in the building. The 2nd flat we were supplying electricity to was occupied by our landlord's son. I asked them to disconnect the other flat immediately and took a picture of the set-up so I could check as frequently as possible. Our bills came down after this till we left and I never spoke to the Landlord or his son about it. I honestly cannot understand why people are comfortable doing stuff like that. |

I am putting up my Honda HRV for sale. I bought the car brand new from Honda Place VI in June 2021. It came with 2 years free service and has been serviced only by Honda place VI. The new owner will still have a couple of free services so will only spend money on fuel till the free service ends. It has only gone for regular service from purchase till date as there have been zero issues. Some of the features are below Engine Capacity: 1.8 Litres Tyres: in very good condition (including full size matching extra tyre ) AC: Automatic Climate Control with Electrostatic Touch-Screen (very effective) Mileage: approximately 18,000 km (I still drive the car to work on the island daily so this is not static) Spare key: Available Full leather seats Full LED Head lights (very bright at night) Electric folding mirrors Push Button Start It also has electric parking brake with automatic brake hold which is an awesome feature for Lagos traffic. Price: 12 Million (slightly negotiable) Serious enquiries should be via whatsapp (or direct call) to 07042521905. The car will be available for inspection at Victoria Island on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. |
goodnewscliff:I bought the Jetta brand new in 2011 and used it as a daily driver till 2021 when I sold it. It was very rugged and performed well. The major issues were with the front suspension. Had bad roads where I stayed so had to replace the stabiliser linkage rather frequently (can’t stand those funny noises). Serviced with stallion motors for the 1st 5 years but the service cost became annoyingly high. Found a mechanic at Itire that I switched to after that. I would buy a Volkswagen again in a heartbeat but not sure about getting the me as Tokunbo (new ones are not available here now to the best of my knowledge) |
I used a Kia cerato bought brand new in 2014. It was a 1.6L engine and the fuel economy was great. Used the car for only 3 years though as it was only ok for intra city runs. The 1st time I took it from Lagos to Ibadan, almost had an accident while trying to overtake a trailer as it refused to gain speed when I floored the throttle. Just revved loudly as if the gear was in neutral and I had to humbly fall back behind the trailer to avoid an oncoming truck. Decided to just use it for office runs within Lagos and stuck with my older 2011 Jetta for my Ibadan trips. In 2017, i noticed the steering started vibrating seriously when braking. Apparently the steering rack was the cause and at the time replacing it was going to cost 350k. That was the final straw for me so sold it while making a silent promise never to buy a Kia until I get assurances their cars have improved. Still waiting… |
Absolutely love your honesty and the way you took responsibility for your actions. It’s awesome the way you picked yourself up and it’s sure you’re encouraging others in a similar position. A big congratulations to you |
