The Nigerian army has finally broken its silence on the attacks on Nigerian soldiers, the most recent in Metele, Borno state. The deadly attack on the 157 task force battalion stationed in Metele left scores of soldiers dead while some are still missing. Some estimates put the casualty figure at over 100, but the army while commenting on Friday, failed to divulge the death toll. The army’s statement read: “The attention of the NA has been drawn to several social media, print, electronic and online publications about the recent attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele. Whilst it is true that there was an attack on the location on 18 November 2018, it has however, become necessary to correct several misinformation being circulated with regards to this unfortunate event. “It is important for the public to note that the NA has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who fall casualty in action. Out of respect for the families of our gallant troops, the NOKs are first notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating the grief family members would bear, were they to discover such from unofficial sources. “Furthermore, it suffices to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate BHT propaganda videos and alluding same to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion. Whilst it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists; to misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not. So far, the situation is that the location is under control as reinforcing units have been able to repel the terrorists and stabilize the situation. “The NA sincerely wishes to thank the various arms of government, MDAs and sister security agencies that have stood with her in these trying times; by commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes who have paid the supreme price for the defence of our dearly beloved country. The necessary support being given the NA by the Federal Government and the goodwill of the Nigerian populace will undoubtedly continue to spur the NA towards the ultimate defeat of the highly degraded BHTs.” Following the latest attack, President Muhammadu Buhari dispatched Mansur Dan-Ali, minister of defence, for an emergency meeting with Chadian President Idris Deby. https://www.thecable.ng/army-breaks-silence-on-fatal-ambush-of-soldiers-but-keeps-mum-on-casualty-figure/amp |

The Edo State Government has reacted to pictures of Godwin Obaseki sleeping while President Muhammadu Buhari was delivering his speech at the United Nation’s conference in New York. A statement signed by Crusoe Osagie, the special adviser to the governor on media and communication strategy, said Mr Obaseki can also experience fatigue and exhaustion, an indisputable fact of life, to which all humans are susceptible. “Our attention has been drawn to a mischievous campaign designed to smear the image of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Governor Obaseki. “The disparagers have populated the internet with photographs of the governor when he momentarily succumbed to fatigue after a long flight, preceded by a chaotic itinerary in Edo State before heading to New York for the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, in the United States of America. “The idle hands and mischievous minds behind the smear campaign against governor Obaseki are clearly not people to be taken seriously.” Mr Osagie said the internet is awash with photographs of outstanding world leaders who have at one time or the other yielded to fatigue at meetings. Highlighting his work schedule prior to the trip, Mr Osagie said despite Mr Obaseki’s rare work culture, unmatched by his peers, “we have never portrayed him as a machine.” https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/286491-why-edo-governor-obaseki-slept-at-un-conference-official.html |

A scandal is brewing within the household of President Muhammadu Buhari. His wife, Aisha, has caused the arrest of her own Aide De Camp, after accusing him of defrauding her, those familiar with the matter have told PREMIUM TIMES. The president’s wife is alleging that Sani Baba-Inna, a chief superintendent of police, received huge donations from politicians and business people on her behalf and then kept the cash to himself. Mrs Buhari therefore requested the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to arrest and compel Mr. Baba-Inna to refund the money, put at over N2.5billion. The police officer was arrested Friday and has remained in detention ever since, with relatives having no access to him, family members say. It is unclear how the president’s wife came about the allegation, but one source said another aide working for Mrs Buhari originated the claim. An associate of the embattled police officer said Mr. Baba-Inna strongly denied the allegation, saying he received no donation from anyone on behalf of his boss. Outcome Of Police Investigation Immediately the police received the petition from Mrs Buhari, the ADC was arrested on Friday last week and investigation launched. “The IG said the matter must be investigated immediately and the house of the ADC was raided,” one of our sources said. “Shockingly, investigators only found N1,200 cash in the House. His bank account was also investigated and had only a balance of N30,000 while the transaction records showed that most credits to the account were his salaries and allowances.” The police, it was gathered, concluded that Mrs Buhari must have been wrongly informed as there was nothing to show or prove that such huge sums of money was in the custody of Mr Baba-Inna. An associate of Mr. Baba-Inna said the police contacted those named as donors of the controversial funds but that they all denied making the donations attributed to them. “For instance, one of those named was the IG of Police himself,” the source said. “But the IG said he has never passed any money through Baba-Inna.” When Mrs Buhari was informed of the outcome of police investigation, the source said the first lady flared up and accused the police of colluding “to protect one of their own”. She then reportedly asked the State Security Service (SSS) to take over the case and get her money back”. SSS Wades In? On the orders of the wife of the president, SSS operatives reportedly took custody of Mr Baba Inna. However, the spokesperson for the SSS, Peter Afunanya told PREMIUM TIMES he was not aware of Mr Baba-Inna’s arrest by his agency. “You are just telling me now, I am not aware, but if there is anything like that I will get back to you,” he said. In the same vein, the spokesperson of the police, Jimoh Moshood, said “I am not aware.” But Hassana, the wife of Mr Baba-Inna confirmed her husband’s arrest. She also said she “has not been able to speak with him since he was taken away”. When contacted, the spokesperson of the wife of the president, Suleiman Haruna, said although he heard about the matter, he was trying to get details of the matter from Mrs Buhari, who he said is currently travelling in New York. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/286275-aisha-buhari-orders-arrest-of-own-adc-alleges-n2-5-billion-fraud.html Myn44, lalasticlala
