The Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEO) on Friday, August 7, 2015, asked the President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the Vice President (VP), Professor Yemi Osinbajo, over his interference in Osun matter and his attempt to shield the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbola, from probe according to a report from Daily Independent. CSCEO claimed that it has uncovered a clandestine plan by the VP in conjunction with all the governors on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) and the party’s national leader, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to save Aregbesola from investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by raising a sum of N4.7 billion through a pet project tagged, “Operation Save Rauf Aregbesola Project (OSRAP) for the said assignment. Besides, the group alleged that part of the “OSRAP” fund had been set aside to prosecute illegal dismissal of a serving Osun State High Court Judge, Justice Olamide Oloyede, from the bench by the National Judicial Council (NJC), as part of the effort to shield Aregbesola from probe over the petition authored by the serving judge. Addressing a press conference on Friday, August 7, 2015, at the Correspondents’ Chapel of NUJ Press Centre in Osogbo, the Chairman of CSCEO, Adeniyi Sulaiman, urged the apex judicial body to disregard any petition sent against Justice Oloyede, noting that the judge did not commit any offence than being on the side of the people on the matter. Sulaiman stated that the conference was imperative as a way to keep informing the members of the public on the present sorry situation of the state under the government of Aregbesola, calling on all lovers of natural, constitutional and social justice all over the world to shift attention to Osun State where Aregbesola provided poverty, hunger, death and underdevelopment as dividends of democracy to the people of the state. http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/civil-society-group-questions-osinbajos-role-in-aregbesola-probe/ |

hours of siege, the Federal Government has ordered the withdrawal of the State Security Service (SSS) personnel from the Abuja home of the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd). This was however effected only after they seized his International Passports and other vital documents. Even though there is no more restriction of his movement, Dasuki still feel aggrieved that he was deprived of performing his religious obligation of attending the Eid Prayers, making the end of Ramadan Fasting. Dasuki has vowed to challenge the action by seeking legal redress in order to enforce his fundamental human rights. Meanwhile, it has been gathered that legal and diplomatic processes initiated by the former National Security Adviser have ensured that cash seized by the South African government during the cash for arms saga last year have been fully recovered by Nigeria. It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was forced to resort to the alternative market to obtain arms when western powers blocked every access to the formal arms market but the cash were seized both at the airport and in the bank. www.prnigeria.com/2015/07/dss-withdraws-from-dasukis-house-south-africa-returns-seized-cash/ |

Those saying that the action of President Muhammadu Buhari and his deputy, Yemi Osibanjo to cut their salaries by 50 per cent is mere tokenism, as the President and his deputy do not live on their salaries, are missing the point. Little things count. In the quest to rid Nigeria of profligacy and corruption, little steps count. Imagine what it will be like if 36 state governors, 109 senators, almost 400 House of Representatives members, commissioners, local government chairmen and councilors also slash their salaries by 50 per cent? And if this is also followed up by a 50 per cent slash in running costs from the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly, Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as all the 36 State Houses? We would have succeeded in reducing recurrent expenditure greatly and the pass-on to capital vote for infrastructure would be a big welcome. Let’s also imagine what it will mean if we can reduce incidences of kick-backs and over-invoicing for infrastructure projects? We will have better project efficiency and the saved monies can be spent on things like hospitals, social welfare and will also boost restructuring and rehabilitation efforts in insurgency-torn areas in Nigeria. Let’s keep demanding and commending little gestures because an ocean is made from little drops of water. Kudos to President Buhari for this gesture. We are expecting the open asset declaration and are looking forward to more symbolic gestures which will show to all that the era of prudence has come. I support this move. Geometric Power Plc has been joined by Afrigem Integrated Utilities Limited to inaugurate and expand the capacity of the 141-megawatt Aba power plant. The plant, which is regarded as Nigeria’s first indigenous integrated power project, is to be inaugurated in November, according to a statement on Sunday. The statement noted that Diamond Bank Plc had on July 3 hosted the signing of a transaction implementation agreement between the sponsors and creditors of the Aba IPP and Afrigem Integrated Utilities Limited for additional equity investment and total capital restructuring of the project. Afrigem Utilities had articulated a three-year value creation programme to inaugurate the plant by November this year and increase the capacity from 141MW to 341MW by 2018, the statement added. Afrigem Utilities is a West African-focused development and investment company with a 720MW pipeline of energy solutions project in the region. According to the statement, for the N15bn investment in Geometric Power Aba Limited and the APL Electric Limited, Afrigem assembled a consortium of technical and financial partners such as General Electric, Tuten Limited and the NCL Limited for technical service. http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/geometric-afrigem-set-to-inaugurate-aba-power-plant/ |
