PoliticsThe LAGOS State Governor Delays Bodys Of Victims by kylepinsky(op): 6:15pm On Jun 08, 2012
The LAGOS State Governor, Babatunde Fashola yesterday explained why the administration has not released bodies of the victims of last Sunday’s Dana Air plane crash to their families.

The governor, who spoke with reporters at the Government House, Ikeja, said his administration is mindful of the cultural and sacred issues involved in the matter, adding that he was being careful not to release wrong bodies to families.

The LAGOS State Governor, Babatunde Fashola said: “We are mindful of the cultural and religious issues involved. But the real problem that is on our hands at present is how to identify the bodies. There is a big risk of releasing the wrong bodies to the wrong families.

“It is unfortunate that this accident has happened and that it happened in our state. And one can imagine the trauma and the grief that relatives of the victims are going through at this moment. We are doing all the best that we can to help them through this period of grief.

“Ordinarily, it is an aviation matter and a matter for the airline operators. But it has brought with it so many complexities.”

The LAGOS State Governor appealed to families of the victims to show consideration as to why things cannot be done as quickly as they would have expected. He said: “We have no reason at all to delay the release of the bodies of the victims to their relatives but the problem is identification.

“And not all doctors can conduct the autopsy; it is only the pathologist who can conduct the exercise. We are working round the clock and that if it is possible today, they would commence the release of the bodies to their relatives.

PoliticsJonathan Sends Bill On Unilag Name Change by kylepinsky(op): 6:10pm On Jun 08, 2012
On Wednesday President Goodluck Jonathan sent a bill to the National Assembly seeking to make official the renaming of University of Lagos (Unilag) after the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Bashorun Moshood Abiola.
The nod, the government said, was in acknowledgment of Abiola’s contributions and sacrifice for democracy in Nigeria.
Two other bills were also presented to the Senate at plenary on the same subject but for different institutions.
The other bills were requests to rename two other universities namely Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike and Federal University of Technology, Yola.
They are now to be known as Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and Modibo Adama University of Technology, Yola, respectively.
The Federal Government had on May 29, announced that Unilag had been renamed Moshood Abiola University of Lagos, a pronouncement that triggered wild protests from the students and lecturers of the institution.
The decision also generated mixed reactions from members of the academia, lawyers and the civil society.
Some members of the National Assembly also faulted the renaming of Unilag as they argued that the action did not follow due process.
But in a letter dated June 5, 2012 and addressed to the President of the Senate, David Mark, Jonathan sought the cooperation of the parliament in the passage of the three bills.

Also Prof. Ade Adefuye the Nigeria Ambassador to the U.S., said the country was contrasting to the declaration of the sect as FTO.
According to Prof. Ade Adefuye, doing that will enhance the image and kudos of the group among other terrorist organizations which may be encouraged to reinforce sect for more impact.
“It will give the impression that Nigeria is not able to contain the sect when it has successfully contained Niger-Delta militants who were more focussed, better organised and deadlier.
