Today, I will write about some things I have actually thought about on how to speak with confidence, because that’s what a lot of people are really facing this days, having sweaty hands while talking or shaky voice or whatever brings about such “uncalled for” nervousness.

What do you have to do when you are to speak to either one person or several thousand people? Well, to me it is the same thing, the only difference is the number of people involved…now let me take some examples, just imagine you are about to be given a contract of a million dollar from the president of the country and the only thing standing between you and that contract is your self-confidence, what are you going to do about it?

In this article, I will be listing a few steps that can help you overcome nervousness, and know that it doesn’t just work by reading this article alone without practicing it, you have to read it, understand it and practice it…here we go;

1. SPEAK SLOWLY: you kind of speak fast to get things done quickly, but when it comes to speeches, it coveys either one of two things or both of them; the first is that its either you are nervous or what you are saying is not valuable, it’s just as if what you are saying is not really important and that you don’t care if the audience can hear it or not.  So it’s important that you speak slowly.

 

2. EXPAND YOUR VOCABULARY: The best way to do that is by reading books, lots and lots of books…we are in the age where people read less because they can watch everything or we have a short attention span that book can’t really keep our interest. So read books that have the exact tone of how you want to sound like and also stuffs at your level. Business books are not bad at all, because the vocabs used there are actually great when you are giving speeches.

If business books are going to bore you, then look for books in which the writers are the ones you like. I prefer reading books by Anthony Robbins, Robert Greene, Myles Munroe and many others. So you can consume one today. Not only reading with your eyes alone but also read out loud, so you can actually hear yourself sounding so much like them, when you come across words that sounds strange to you, look them up either via internet or using a dictionary, so you don’t misuse vocabulary (it is really quite embarrassing when you are stopped during a speech and asked the meaning of a particular word and you literally have no idea).

 

3. DON’T EVER! EVER!! DISQUALIFY YOUR STATEMENT AFTER MAKING IT: Don’t use the “I don’t know”, “I think”, “I guess” statement frequently, don’t get to the end of your statement and disqualify it, for example...I will try this one I guess, or I don’t know if I’m coming, that has become so rampant this days that we don’t even know when we use it. If you don’t know something, you don’t need to put it at the middle of a sentence, it would make you seem dumb or like you don’t know what you are saying. Be definite, be decisive 100% if possible.

 

4. AVOID BEING VERBOS IN YOUR COMMUNICATION: you don’t have to compensate your word, it makes people feel like you are lying or you have no idea what you are talking about. Don’t underestimate others people’s intelligence and don’t come off guilty. When you want to communicate something, focus precisely on the details and make sure it is concise. You don’t have to be sorry for everything. Yes it’s good to be apologetic sometimes, but not when you are doing the right thing, and you don’t have to give reasons for being sorry, get straight to the point because if you try to over compensate your apology, it devalues your apology in the long run.

 

5. PAY FULL ATTENTION TO YOUR TONE: if you know how to use your tone well to emphasize things, you have mastered public speaking. Make sure you keep your volume consistent, don’t kill your tone at the end of your statement

6. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK: A lot of people fall victim of this and it’s really not a good way to communicate, sometimes it might be up to 20 seconds to think about something before speaking it and that seems like a lot of time for most people when speaking to someone or a group of people, so they don’t consider it necessary to think before speaking. It’s okay to say at the middle of a statement to say “I need to think” instead of using fillers like “ummm”or the likes of it. It is a really great way to get your audience back if you have lost them.

 

7. PRACTICE EVERYDAY: speaking with confidence is just like working out to build muscles and if you don’t want to lose the muscles, you have to keep working out more often, they work hand in hand…

 

Always place it also in your mind that nobody will beat you if you falter the first few times you try to speak confidently, it only helps you grow better as you keep practicing.
