I have called them out on social media and fortunately have been joined by other scholars to protest this false hood. The scholarship coordinator is well aware most of us still have outstanding debts so this declaration is beyond me. In fact I emailed the scholarship coordinator last week to send a polite reminder so they do know we are owed. This admin is the worst by far I must add. We are not letting this go without a fight. At the moment, they have asserted we provide proof of outstanding fees (which is preposterous) but let's play ball anyway and send them invoice reminders from our schools, overdue notifications etc.... That's what I intend to do. Naija will never cease to disgrace us. Mayflowa: |
Any current scholars here - please following the disastrous news today (see previous post, canxellation of 2017 scheme) may we reiterate that not all outstanding fees have been settled. Nddc is trying to play a fast one on us. |
Saw this on twitter. It really seems the 2017 scholarship has been cancelled unfortunately choicecad: |
I am sorry to hear you have not received a single payment, that is just terrible. I am one of those scholars that still have outstanding fees to pay too as the payment in January was for the previous session which was beyond overdue. I agree with you that this particular delay is unprecedented as we know they do delay but it was usually, say, a couple of months. I pray they sort out all outstanding scholarship issues asap including the long-awaited 2017 now 2018 scholarship list. I am sure the list will be released for the simple fact that they have not called for a fresh application which they usually do by this time (In my time, it was in February). But I must say, I thought the previous administration was chaotic; however, this is the worst experience by far and as much as I try to remain optimistic, this current admin has handled this scheme very badly. Scholars are being reported to home office about non-payment of fees and given an ultimatum to settle their debts or leave the country. Prospective scholars pls take note; NDDC has a bad rep here and if they do release the list and invite you for the induction, there is usually a Q&A session on the day, please hold their feet to the fire there and then, hopefully, things will change for the better. To add to my point below, I come here regularly to check / confirm if 2017 prospective list has been released too 'cos I sincerely believe if the list is released, then it is also a good sign for current scholars that surely regardless of how late (we hope it is not too late though), our payments will come so it goes both ways. ladybug2: |
I disagree with the fact that it should just be 2017 scholars contributing in this forum. If nddc didn't have this chronic late payment issue then yes you have a point. However, the issues current scholars are facing surely trickles down to prospective scholars cos if they are having issues paying us our outstanding instalments, rest assured the new scholars will be affected as well. Also they may hang on to the list until they have dealt with current scholars so you may need us here to know what the status is. When I started my phd, the older scholars in my school had just received their next payments' (a month after I registered) but I did get valuable info from them, and it was clear to me nddc usually delays max 5 months before payments are disbursed - and now that is manageable. But this current delay my set (2015, 2016) has experienced is unprecedented (18 months and no payments!!). Even the older scholars who have finished and are not owed are stunned. So it is in our collective interest to badger them to do the right thing. Whatever the delay is to release the list may (or may not) be tied to the fact that they still have outstanding debts to settle and 2017 prospectives need to be kept in the loop and vice versa. My school has flagged nddc as a problematic sponsor, believe me you do not want to go through what we have. chymeze: |
Thank you Nuel1647: |
I have begun besieging nddc officials on Twitter both for the release of the list and outstanding payments for current scholars because they still owe us. I target Nsima in particular 'cos he keeps tweeting about the good the commission has done in the community (which is laughable). I try to remain optimistic but nddc is a failed org and in-your-face corrupt; not to mention an embarrassment to us 'cos every time I have a PhD assessment, when it comes to factors that may impede my progress or timeline for submission of thesis, nddc pops up on all my review paperwork due to non-payment of fees. I always send this review paperwork to seledi so they know how terrible they are representing themselves here. I pray the list is out too but you have to understand that this last long delay in payments has made many schools here in the UK reconsider nddc as a viable scholarship option so brace yourselves for very strict pre-registration conditions assuming the list is released and successful candidates are mobilised to begin studies. That being said, let us hope for the best. |
Madame Seledi does not respond to my emails anymore. Apparently, they think we should be grateful that they have made (partial) payments in January to current scholars so no matter what I inquire from her (be it 2017 list or assurance of subsequent payments to Ph.D. scholars), the last response I got from her before she went mute was (in her words) 'why are we still complaining?' NDDC has given Nigeria a bad name here. Meanwhile, the MD has been really active on Twitter touting achievements but oblivious to anything else to do with scholarships. And yet they have the nerve to complain when Trump labels us as 'shithole' countries. PTDF has its own issues but they are far more reliable than NDDC without question. |
Jaybadestboy:Try the scholarship coordinator: Madame Seledi Thompson (seledi.thompson@nddc.gov.ng) |
I really hope this is good news from nddc. My advice is to (I'm a current scholar) email the scholarship coordinator Ms seledi thompson (seledi.thompson@nddc.gov.ng) |
Nuel1647:Has any current PhD student (scholar) received a second or final payment? Everyone's been quiet. The MD seems very happy with his 'achievement' and has been touting it on twitter on a frequent basis. |

pbayagbon:This is the main reason I have chosen not to be a religious fanatic. Naija is the perfect case study. The politicians are in bed with our so-called religious heads. |
Hokage94:I have taken a look at the site, there are links to different scholarships you can click and investigate further including commonwealth scholarship. Apart from Commonwealth, however, be informed that some of these funding opportunities may not be full. Regarding application fee, I'm not entirely sure what you mean as most of these scholarship bodies do not demand a fee for applying. PTDF is the only scholarship body I know that requests' application fee. If you mean a fee for applying for studies in the school, I doubt that any UK university will demand an application fee, at least not from my experience. Canada does - about 50$ or slightly more; but for UK schools, I'm not aware. All the best. |
Hokage94:I will take a look at it later and clarify. My school is Cranfield University but I got this info via a scholarship newsletter I'm subscribed to. Are you looking for a Masters or research / PhD programme? |
Whilst we wait for NDDC to get their act together (if they ever will), please view a scholarship opportunity from University of Nottingham for anyone interested (2018). https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/studywithus/international-applicants/scholarships-fees-and-finance/scholarships/index.aspx |
Mayflowa:I just sent her another email and she responded rather angrily essentially asking 'why am I still complaining!' - this is for PhD scholars still owed one more year or in some other cases, two years. I did not know what to make out of it, to be honest, but I replied back and said to her quite frankly that I (as well as some of my fellow PhD scholars) am still owed one more year tuition; for me, it is my final year; and my school has made it clear that we won't graduate if all outstanding debts are not settled. NDDC is being very tricky with these recent payments they have made and perhaps using this as an excuse to further delay remittance of all outstanding debts. Let's hope to God they do the right thing anyway. Ms Seledi isn't taking too kindly to my emails anymore though. |
Mayflowa:She did not reply me either. Have sent her two emails this week. Not a good sign to be honest. |

dannysugar:Well said, and you are right. I am a current scholar but that notwithstanding it is really unjust to play with people's future and as much as I can I try to make it known that prospective scholars are still waiting, esp on twitter. Naija / NDDC needs to clean up its act and not feign faux outrage on 'shithole' remarks - because that's what our leaders are turning us into. |
viewingthistopic:Yes, I saw that too but it is not entirely accurate. I still owe tuition for my final year and I've been told if this is not settled after I submit my thesis, I will not graduate. I have acknowledged with gratitude (to NDDC officials) on social media for sorting out the backlog but PhD students have not been completely settled so I hope this is not a tactic to delay us even further. Please if any other PhD student has been paid all their backlogs, let the house be informed. I do try to campaign for the release of the list, not to worry. |
Prospective (research) scholars. Saw this on my school's intranet page: Funding opportunity: Sue White Fund - invitation for proposals We are now inviting proposals for research projects to be supported through the Sue White Fund for Africa. This scheme enables students to study for a PhD at Cranfield University in a topic related to the late Professor Sue White’s research interests in water & sanitation, catchment processes, and water management. The scheme is financed by a generous donation by Professor White through her estate. The student is expected to undertake their research in Africa and more details of the scheme can be found in the attached project application form and on the website. The fund provides £12,000 a year towards international fees, a full stipend for the student (indexed for the country they are based in) and some support for travel. A minimum contribution of £5,000 per annum is required from an industrial sponsor which can be used to cover other costs. Overall, the scheme operates in a similar fashion to the university’s industrial bursary scheme. If other funding can’t be found to cover the shortfall in fees then the centre/theme needs to approve the lower fee rate. The scheme is strongly aligned with many of the current GCRF initiatives and could be used to demonstrate added value for proposals to those calls. We already have our first project sponsored through the Fund which began in early 2017. If you have any queries about how the fund operates do please contact Dr Monica Rivas Casado via email m.rivas-casado@cranfield.ac.uk. If you need a copy of the application form, please pm me. Let's continue to seek other opportunities whilst we wait for NDDC to wake up. |

Nuel1647:They still some of us 2nd yr/3rd-year tuition which is now overdue. I didn't get the email though. That doesn't mean they shouldn't deal with the issue of 2017 /2018 list. I have been haranguing them on twitter. |
BRAINNY:Yes, thanks for the correction - TETFUND I meant. All the best. |
Whilst we are waiting for nddc to release the list, please prospective scholars consider a more reliable scholarship option below: http://www.studyandscholarships.com/2011/07/commonwealth-scholarships-for.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nigerianstudy+%28Study+%26+Scholarships%29 Apparently my supervisors just told me NDDC wasn't the only scholarship body to owe their scholars; Techfund (still owe their scholars) and at some point PTDF too - not a good look for nigeria at all. It's a shame really. I am still tweeting on your behalf not to worry. |
I am a current scholar & I have tried as much as I can to campaign for 2017 list to be released as well, alongside ensuring they are aware they need to pay us our final/remaining instalment since they took forever to deal with our financial obligations on time (and for most of us, the battle isn't over) - so not to worry we are in this together. We can walk and chew gum at the same time. The system needs to change or else, believe me, it will be futile to travel overseas and suffer because of their incompetence or just plain wickedness for no reason. I don't know Madame Abike personally, but she responded to me on twitter when I cried out for payments. I can tweet all those involved (NDDC) including Madame Abike for the release of the 2017 list as this is beyond ridiculous (perhaps we should now call it 2018 list). But I must emphasize for current PhD scholars still owed one more year or two years tuition, we need to get them to settle these outstanding payments as soon as possible or else we are not guaranteed graduation or worst case scenario, we still get kicked out. This issue of outstanding payments for current scholars is way beyond over, but that does not mean the 2017/18 prospectives has to be kept in limbo. The idea of going together as a group to NDDC office for an explanation on the 2017/18 list is spot on. With regards meeting with Madame Abike, this is where I was disappointed with her 'cos the last time a scholar arranged a meeting in Abuja (Dec last year), it was unceremoniously cancelled so I won't bank on that. |
Nuel1647:I believe this is why the list is being delayed because the minister must have alluded to all outstanding debts not just a part of it as they have done. My outstanding debts were for two years and the recent payment made only covered my second year which was way overdue. A couple of us as I am are still owed one more year and in some cases 2 years so I wonder if this is why the release of the list has been put on hold. The month ends next week. They (NDDC) are not saying anything at all with regards to the 2017 list. I have a horrible feeling about this. |
