From reading almost all the replies to this question, I reckon it depends A LOT on your personality and how you've been brought up.
If you're a fiercely independent person as you come across as to be, then CC's answers may just be right for you.
If you have a whole lot of patience, and you're willing to "put up" with your partner, then Mutter's will do just fine for you.
That doesn't mean that if you're independent, you can't go along with Mutter's or vice versa.
This is a very touchy subject and as much as you'll get advise from everyone, you yourself know what to do. The answers here can only guide you, but you've got to do what you've got to do and you probably know it already.

I think the blame lies solely with women - they permit it, they encourage it.  If a mother trains her son not to be a wife-beater, he would not be a wife-beater.  Nigerian women are quite liberated but they insist on holding on to traditions that do not pay them.  In addition to that, women in positions of influence (e.g. mother of the husband) do little to discourage this problem from extending to the next generation.

I I'm going to put the blame on the women 100%.  If you're interested in statistics, I know a marriage counselor who discovered that 50% of husbands in pentecostal churches, those miracle-believing, bible-quoting people, beat their wives from time to time.  And of course they are protected by their women; you will not know such a thing happens unless it's happening in your house.

It's old, but I can't believe you think the blame lies solely on women. That is one of the most absolute c r a p I've heard in a really long while. Why on earth should a man, real self respecting, brought up well man raise his hands to his wife or any woman-wife, mother, sister. . .?
Fair enough, women sometimes push things too far, but to hit her because of it is totally wrong.
Even if tradition in Nigeria is that men are the head, they are free to hit a woman and get away with a lot of things, does that mean that the man has no sense to know that some things are just wrong? Would he like to see his daughter's husband hitting her? I don't get the way some people think.

Women, teach your sons the right thing. Don't spoil or pamper them or make them believe that because they're male, women must or should lick the ground they walk on. We need to teach them that women are precious. They should be respected and loved not abused.
