AgricultureRe: Agriculture/Farming Business In Nigeria by lagos88: 3:30pm On Feb 06, 2009
The United States and India, as well as China, are all major grain-producing nations in the world. Though its cultivated land is less than the United States and India, China ranks the first in the world in terms of grain product; its per-unit grain yield is much higher than the world average. But, as China's population is almost five times that of the United States, its per-capita share of grain is less than one-fourth of the latter.

Meanwhile, the proportion of China's grain output in the world's total increased from 17 percent to 25 percent.

Foreign AffairsNaval Escort Fleet To Protect 15 Chinese Merchant Vessels by lagos88(op): 5:21pm On Jan 07, 2009
After successfully carrying out its first escort mission, the Chinese Navy prepares to cover another 11 domestic merchant vessels planning to travel around Somalia this week.

Merchant vessels sail in a line formation under command of the DDG-169 Wuhuan destroyer in the Gulf of Aden, January 6, 2009. [Xinhua]

"We will actively provide information and necessary rescue services for those merchant ships passing through the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters," said He Jianzhong, spokesman with Ministry of Transport (MOT).

A governmental spokesman said on Tuesday that the naval task force will protect a total of 15 Chinese merchant ships between Tuesday and Saturday.

Consisting of two destroyers and one supply ship, the naval fleet arrived in waters off Somali coast on Tuesday after a voyage of more than 4,400 nautical miles. It set sail on December 26.

Soon after its arrival, the fleet conducted its first escort service for four Chinese merchant vessels, including one from Hong Kong.

The ship's cargo, origins and destinations were not released.

Under command of the fleet's flagship DDG-169 Wuhuan destroyer, the four merchant vessels sailed in a line formation and passed through the warship's patrolling area.

Surging piracy off the Somali coast has increasingly threatened internationals shipping. A total of 1,265 Chinese merchant ships passed through the Gulf of Aden last year. Seven were attacked by pirates.

One Chinese fishing ship, Tian Yu 8, and its 18 crew members were hijacked on November 14, 2008. They are still being held by pirates.

The MOT announced Chinese merchant ships may ask for protection by applying to the China Shipowners' Association (CSA) and China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC).

According to the commander of the Chinese Naval expedition, Real-Admiral Du Jingchen, the main task for the warships is to dispel pirates with their presence.

"We have started our escort mission and will conduct careful deployment and close contact with the vessels to secure their safety by strictly abiding by the UN resolutions and international laws," said Real-Admiral Du.

The fleet is carrying about 800 crew members including 70 soldiers from the Navy's special forces along with weapons such as missiles, canons and helicopters.

For the first phase of the escort mission, the fleet will patrol the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters for about three months, followed by possible replacement warships as needed.

PoliticsChina :Navy Leaves For Somali Waters Today To Tackle Pirates by lagos88(op): 5:02am On Dec 26, 2008
YALONG BAY NAVY BASE, Hainan - The navy today embarks on its first overseas military mission since 1949 with the vow to protect Chinese and foreign ships from pirates off Somalia's coast.

Xie Zengling, co-leader of the special force on board the Wuhan, poses for the camera yesterday. The Wuhan is a destroyer and the flagship of the navy's fleet that sails for Somali waters today to protect Chinese and foreign ships against pirates. [China Daily]

Rear Admiral Du Jingchen, chief commander of the mission, said two destroyers, a large supply vessel, and about 1,000 navy personnel would sail from the navy base near Sanya in Hainan province around 1:30 pm today. And they are prepared for "complicated and long-term missions" for at least three months.

"Since this is the navy's first overseas mission, we could encounter unforeseen situations. But we are prepared for them," Du said.

Speaking to Chinese journalists on board the Wuhan, one of the destroyers and the flagship of the mission, Du said the navy would assign a special force of 60 soldiers to escort ships that seek protection off Somalia's coast.

But, he said, the navy has no plans to take action against the pirates on land, and would not fire at them unless Chinese vessels, civilian or military, are attacked. "Instead, we will evict the pirates."

Ding He, 21, one of the youngest soldiers on the Wuhan, said he was very proud to be part of the mission.

"The pride is too strong it washes away the pain and rigors of training," said the suntanned Hebei native.

Like Ding, Haikou, the destroyer commissioned in October 2003, is also on its first overseas journey.

The two destroyers and the large supply vessel, all from the South China Sea Fleet, were docked along with three other vessels off the coast of Sanya yesterday. People could see them, painted in white and decorated with colorful flags, from a famous Sanya resort.

"Our confidence comes from our capability," Du said. The advanced equipment on board the ships reflect the strength of the Chinese navy. The soldiers have undergone training late in the evenings and early in the mornings because pirates often attack ships during those times.

Earlier, the Ministry of Transport said the navy would guard all Chinese ships, including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, which seek protection.

The navy, however, said it would protect foreign vessels, too, if necessary.

Pirates off the Somali coast have taken a heavy toll on the world shipping industry because one of the busiest commercial sea routes passes through the horn of Africa. Pirates have seized more than 40 vessels this year, and earned about $30 million as ransom.

Last week, the Foreign Ministry said about 20 percent of the 1,265 Chinese ships passing through the area have come under attack this year. And seven Chinese ships or crews have been hijacked.

A sailor get ready to defend from pirates' attacks on the deck of the Chinese ship "Zhenhua 4" in the Gulf of Aden, on December 17, 2008. The Chinese ship escaped the pirate hijack in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday, after the crew fought for four hours with the help of a multi-coalition force. No injuries or deaths were reported. Nine pirates armed with rocket launchers and heavy machine guns boarded the ship. The 30 crew members locked themselves in their accommodation area, using fire hydrants and firebombs to prevent the attackers from entering, said an official with China Maritime Search and Rescue Center. PoliticsChina: A Role Model To All Nations by lagos88(op): 4:48am On Dec 26, 2008
China is a role model to all developing nations around the globe.

After centuries of oppression and domination by western nations, most developing nations are trying to pull their nations up from poverty. They look at China's rapid progress as an example.

China also give aid and technical help to these nations and have formed many bilateral relations for the benefit of everyone.

However, it is not only the developing nations that benefit from China. The developed nations benefit as well.

Recently, China has helped to arbitrate between the US and North Korea. There are also many more examples too numerous to mention.
FamilyThe Price Of Air Ticket To China by lagos88(op): 4:09am On Dec 26, 2008
I stayed in Lagos about 2 years . I often travelled from Lagos to China during the past 2 years . I always asked other people's air ticket prices and found that almost every time mine was the cheapest !

Many people like to buy air tickest from agency , I don't think tha't a good idea . I always went to the airline office by myself . And if you can buy in advance , the price is much lower than normal .

Most Nigerian's business purpose to China is Guangzhou ,but they always buy the tickets stopping in Beijing .This way wasted their too much money and travelling time !

China is a country with over 9,600,000 square kilometers .It is the third largerst country in the world . Bejing is in the north and Guangzhou in the south . I takes many hours by plane from to Beijing to Guangzhou .If you buy that kind of air ticket , that means when you land in Beijing after 17--18 hours' flight from Lagos to Beijing , you will have to wait another 5--8 hours to arrive in Guanghzou .

The temperature and season between Guangzhou and Beijing is also quite different . Like today , Beijing is --7°people wear heavy coats while Guangzhou is 20°people can wear the same clothes as in Lagos .

I am a Chinese lady . I have stayed in Nigeria over two years but in china now .Here I would like to share a Nigerian friend 's hospital experience in China with all the nairalanders.
Last month a Nigerian friend named Qwolab came to see to my house to see me .There is a cyst on his left eye .,which makes his appearance not good-looking enough . I asked why he didn't remove it .He said it is not easy in Nigeria and he is a little afraid . So I advised him to remove it in China since it is only a very small operation and cheap enough .
He followed my suggestion without any hesitation . So on a Monday afternoon after we finished other things we went to the hospital .
The doctor is a beautiful girl .She check the cyst carefully and said "no problem at all , it needs a small operation if you like call it operaion ".
After we paid , She leaded us to the operation room .She asked me to wait outside .She spent 5 minutes to disinfect , 10 minutes on the operation and another 10 minutes sewing the wound .All together is 25 minutes !.
when the doctor asked me to enter the operating room to see , I even couldn't find his wound !
The doctor bounded up his wound carefully .
The next day (Tuesday ) we went to see the doctor , she helped Mr Owolab remove the bandage away .
This operation costs 200 yuan (Chinese dollar ), around 3400 naira .Isn't it too cheap ?
I know many Nigerian people are suffering all sorts of diseases ,especially those need operating ( for instance ,myoma of uterus and others) . As a Nigerian Chinese lady , I will be glad to help them .
