I guess that's why you call yourself the agitator. Playing Devil's advocate. Well done. Must be fun. |
Culture / Are Nigerian Women More Or Less Conservative Than We Were In The 60s? PHOTO by Lagosian247: 9:38am On Aug 22, 2014 |
Check out this photo. I keep seeing evidence that all the so called conservative, traditional values are really quite new. We say it is "our culture" but so much has changed over time. We pick and choose what to keep and what to let go. Abeg, shey we used to expose our stomachs before? Even in more recent times, i.e. the 60s, we had girls in bikinis on the front page of papers like the Daily Times, and no one thought it was outrageous. So why are we forming now?

Oh wow! That took me back!!!! You should post it on @NsibidiInst - they're running a memory project on Nigeria in the 60s-80s. You post a picture from back in the day with a caption saying why you chose it. Haha!!! You can say it's the Reeducation of the Indomie Generation. https://twitter.com/NsibidiInst 1 Like |
Culture / Re: Influence Of Western Culture On Nigerians Fashion And Style Of Dressing by Lagosian247: 6:16pm On Aug 20, 2014 |
Check out this great article: http://www.leitmotif.io/2014/08/07/nigerian-fashion-is-fashion-without-teeth/ "So, can we call Nigerian fashion, "fashion"? Or are people just making highly interchangeable clothing? Has our fashion output inspired anybody to get into fashion design because of the strength of our collective visions? Or are people merely jumping on the bandwagon, hoping for fame, connections to the powerful in society and a way to make money?" PREACH!!! Also there's this new project on Twitter - @NsibidiInst |
Culture / Re: Do African People Even Care About Tradition, Culture, Language And Heritage Stil by Lagosian247: 6:13pm On Aug 20, 2014 |
Yes we do! In fact there is this new cultural research organisation that is working to preserve Nigeria's heritage. It's called Nsibidi Institute. You should check out their website. There was this one blog a week or two ago about how Nigeria was seen by Americans (Westerners broadly speaking) a few weeks before independence. Great photos from LIFE Magazine. http://nsibidiinstitute.org/a-proud-free-and-all-but-forgotten-nigeria/ They actually just launched a project on Twitter @NsibidiInst as well - an online archive. Looks like a more engaging way to talk about Nigeria's rich, old and diverse cultural history. Here is the poster that came with it.
