A big thank you to this honorable group. Resigned from my teaching job. It was fun while it lasted. My dream work has been achieved. 2025 to 2026 is a huge blessing to me; getting a graduate Assistant role, shortlisted for CDCFIB also. But then, one can only choose 1 at a time. I pray that some merit base be filled with these 2 FG vacancies I'm leaving behind. God bless you all who are still looking for a job. Amen |

Politics › Re: President Tinubu Deserves Credit For Supporting State Police - Riley Moore by LamineF(f): 8:03am On Jun 12 |
lavylilly: In a country like Nigeria, proposals for state police often generate debate because they offer potential benefits (such as local security responsiveness) but also raise concerns. Some commonly cited disadvantages include:
1. Political Abuse by State Governments
Critics worry that governors could use state police to harass political opponents, suppress dissent, influence elections, or intimidate critics. Given the strong influence many governors already have over state institutions, this is often the most frequently mentioned concern.
2. Uneven Standards Across States
Nigeria's states differ significantly in wealth and administrative capacity. Wealthier states might be able to recruit, train, equip, and pay officers effectively, while poorer states could struggle, leading to major differences in policing quality.
3. Funding Challenges
Running a police force is expensive. Costs include salaries, training, vehicles, communications systems, forensic services, and equipment. Some states already face difficulties paying civil servants regularly, which could affect police effectiveness and increase corruption risks.
4. Risk of Ethnic or Communal Bias
Nigeria is ethnically and religiously diverse. There are concerns that state police forces could favor particular ethnic, religious, or political groups, especially during local conflicts, potentially worsening tensions rather than reducing them.
5. Coordination Problems
Many security threats—such as kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, and organized crime—cross state boundaries. Multiple state police forces could create coordination difficulties, intelligence-sharing gaps, and jurisdictional disputes.
6. Increased Corruption Risks
Creating additional police structures could create more opportunities for corruption if oversight mechanisms are weak. Without strong accountability systems, misconduct might become harder to monitor.
7. Potential Threat to National Unity
Some argue that highly autonomous state police forces could weaken centralized security control and, in extreme circumstances, be used to support separatist or anti-federal political agendas.
8. Human Rights Concerns
If oversight institutions are weak, state police could become tools for arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, or excessive use of force. Effective independent complaints and judicial review systems would be essential.
9. Duplication of Security Structures
Maintaining both federal and state police forces may increase bureaucracy and administrative costs. Responsibilities could overlap, creating confusion about who handles particular crimes or emergencies.
10. Difficulty in Establishing Effective Oversight
For state police to work well, strong institutions would be needed to investigate misconduct and enforce accountability. Building such systems across all states would be challenging and costly.
The Counterargument
Supporters of state police argue that local officers understand local languages, cultures, and security challenges better than a centralized force, which could improve crime prevention and response times. The debate in Nigeria is therefore often less about whether state police are good or bad in principle and more about whether adequate safeguards can be created to prevent abuse.
In summary, the main concerns are political misuse, unequal state capacity, funding difficulties, ethnic bias, coordination challenges, corruption, and weak oversight. Whether these disadvantages outweigh the potential benefits depends largely on the legal and institutional safeguards put in place. DSS will have more work to do to checkmate their activities & Federal power is above them. It survive in US, Nigeria will try |

No kidnapping incident should last more than 24 hours if the security organization is serious. Yes, but victim life is at stake. That's why they need careful observations & then hit them hard based on local intelligence. |
