He campaigned and won presidency with the promise to normalise relationship with Russia and end the Ukraine war (which actually started in 2014)

He was even ready to talk with Putin and negotiate ceasefire in the first month of February 2022 invasion, but he allowed EU/NATO/USA to give him false hope. That "hope" of defeating Russia cost Ukraine lots of lives and many years and billions of indebtedness to USA.

A good leader should never allow himself to be misled. If USA is aiding and arming you to fight an enemy, think thrice before accepting.

They could have killed very little to zero civilians (armed guards are legitimate targets though) and took those civilians as hostages instead, and treat them humanely in captivity. Then announce to whole world what they want immediately after that. That they will release all the hostages as soon as their demands are met.
