The funny thing is that the programs like express entry, 3-year post graduate work permit and part way for international student to permanent resident were all introduced by the Conservatives the party against immigration. When many people say such, I asked them when they came to Canada. Before the start of express entry, it could take at least 4 years to process federal skill worker permanent resident visas from Nigeria. The Conservatives made some changes after winning election in 2006 before arriving at express entry. Nothing wrong with promoting climate change but not by make people poor. Gerrard59: Nice points to read. It seems these days, it's immigrants that want to protect their new found lands from becoming worse than they met it.
Hopefully, Ndi lovey dovey don't accuse you of being an Uncle Tom or trying to prevent other immigrants from entering the country. To Ndi lovey dovey, only so-called liberal parties know the best for a country.
P.S. I would never take a politician who promotes climate change as a serious person. |

I'm still undecided on who to vote for. If election was last November, the Conservatives would have had my votes. Carney hasn't convinced me yet. I am waiting for the debate before choosing who to vote for. The other issue is that Carney is just copying Poilievre platform. It sounds like he would do everything to get elected. Kenn55: I agree with you. This is why Trump prefers a liberal government cos it favors the US. He knows that Mark Carney will not do what it takes to reduce dependence on the US cos they are too beholden to their ideology that they throw away their common sense.
Liberal stupidity in the west is the cause of this current rise of far right populism we are now seeing in the west. They are not realistic. If they had moderated their ideology to reflect reality, we wouldn't have had someone like Trump.
Let's hope if MC wins, he will back off these stupid ideologies for the sake of national unity. Maybe Trump's 51st comment all along is not necessarily to get the whole of Canada which is not realistic but to poach Alberta into the US. If the rest of Canada don't want Alberta oil then maybe America that wants it should have it. |

Thanks for this suggestion. The problem is that with the current cost of living, most middle income earners don't have spare cash to invest. I wish we could go back to the time when spouses can split income for tax purposes or go to the point where family file taxes as one. GraciousWords: This is not financial advice but.....
Regarding transfers to spouse or common law partners....a couple in the scenario above may want to speak to their bank or accountant about spousal RRSP. Or the higher earner pays all household expenses and low earner does most of the investments. Investment income will be taxed at part time earner's marginal tax. Also ask about spousal loan. Lower earner borrows from high earner at CRA rate and uses money to invest in a non registered account and pays lower tax on investments
The wealthy and middle class have access to information, spare cash to invest and tax efficient strategies but anyone can benefit from these. |

Not my point. All I’m saying is that any time the NDP reaches their target it means a Conservative government. Both times they were the official opposition, the Conservatives win. It is not looking good for the conservatives right now, same way it is not looking good for NDP. If elections were in Nov/Dec, the Conservatives would have had my vote without thinking about it. I mentioned it in one of my comments earlier. Trudeau’s liberal is too lefty for me. Now with a new Liberal leader even with all he has said about carbon tax, I must think a lot about who to vote for. The rich will always have a way of paying the lowest tax they can. They have the means to always reduce the amount of taxes they pay. NDP message is always the rich not paying their fair share. I have never heard about them suggesting empowering the low income to move them high income. To me their messaging sounds like they have a problem with the rich. The last election somebody came to campaign for NDP at my door, I asked him if they have problems with people getting rich, the guy couldn’t answer me. Their message does not resonate with me and with most Canadians. The issue is the Canadian tax system. It goes beyond the rich not paying their fair share. For instance, in a household where one works part time and the other full time, the system does not allow them to transfer income from one spouse to the other but if they claim to be separated and one spouse makes support payment to the other, their total income tax obligation is lower. Unfortunately, giving the tax system in Canada, the middle class will always be the ones that will feel the effect of increases in taxes more. They are not rich enough to take advantages of what the rich can take advantage of. At the same time, the government said they are too rich to need help. ferfer: The reality is that they won't get the status of official opposition and it is not looking good for the Cons. You know this already.
It is a problem to be rich with NDP? Nope. That is wrong. They have always advocated for everyone to pay a fair share of taxes! The rich always have the wherewithal to exploit the tax system such that the lower/middle income are left to hold the bag. It is disingenuous to call that 'controlling everything' or having a problem with the rich!
There is no need to see how the dental program will work out. It is always cheaper and effective to prevent people from jumping into the river than to pull them out of the river. The dental program is a health promotion campaign and since Canada has a universal / publicly funded health care system, it is simplistic at best to claim that the middle class have not benefited from this program.
It will be the-same tax paying middle class and others that will fund the more expensive downstream issues that would have been cheaper to prevent if done earlier. |

Absolutely, official opposition is a target to aim for especially for NDP. If NDP achieves this target, it puts Conservatives in power. By NDP standard it is a problem to be rich. Everything much be controlled. Everyone should end up with the same after tax income. One of the legacy that Trudeau will be known for is the child care policy. No one no matter their political leaning can't take that from him. As for the dental care program and pharma care will see how that will work out. ferfer: Official opposition is still a target to aim for and it does not take away their antecedent that they are the only party that does not sell the people out to the rich.
Oh and by the way, Canada's health care is publicly funded so as long as the dental program and proposed pharma-care prevents spending more money (which it does) down the line as a result of poorer health outcomes, then all taxpayers have benefited. |

Imposed carbon tax to comply with the international treaty on climate change? So, countries with no carbon tax are not complying with such treaty. If Canada stop emitting GHG, the impact on the global GHG emission will be less than 2%. We can continue protecting the earth while taxing ourselves so much that we can afford basic stuffs. There are places in Canada where the only source of heating is natural gas or propane. Not matter the rate of carbon tax, they will still need to use natural gas or propane no other solution. Carbon tax will not change their behaviour. Good you mention the many politics involved in it, the same politics made Trudeau that is so passionate about protecting the earth decided to exempt home heating oil from carbon tax. Home heating oil is one of the largest source of GHG emission and is used mostly in Atlantic Canada for heating. This really shows the policy in it. I have read so much about the climate stuff helping in international trade but no one has pointed out to me the trade agreements that have climate stuff in them. Hopefully, someone will show me one day.

They impose the carbon tax to comply with the international treaty on climate change. Canada hasn’t really contributed their quota to it until Trudeau came in, he is passionate about protecting “earth” . Also the climate stuff helps in international trade too, many politics are involved in it, they can’t get rid of it easily like that. |

When it comes to voting, I make an educated choice. I will never understand the concept of carbon tax in Canada. Like you you mentioned we all know climate change is an issue but why tax ourselves so much when countries with more GHG emission don't have such policy. The tax increases the cost of production in Canada and we can all tell what has happened to GDP per capita, investment per capita, food prices since the introduction of the policy. Kenn55: There is a reason why NDP can't win an election in this country cos people are not stupid. It sounds good to parade those bogus programs but who is going to pay for it? NDP never thinks about how to grow the economy, this time around they will be wiped out. They had the chance to force an election that would have favored them but was aligning with JT, now they are not part of the equation again.
MC has an impressive resume but I can't trust him. He has switched his position on almost everything he believed in from carbon tax, pipelines, capital gains tax, deregulation etc. and he is doing it cos of the election. I'll rather stick with PP whose views on these are original. The good thing is that PP is not anti immigrants unlike Trump and his gang of crackheads so I don't see any reason to fear him.
What we need is common sense not ideology. Climate change is real but to kill or limit our industries while the like of China and India are still building and firing coal is a no no for me. It is either the whole world do the same thing we do or we do what others are doing. Even if we unilaterally end fossil fuels, we will still feel the impact of climate change as we share one climate so why weaken ourselves for something we can't unilaterally solve? This is my problem with the Left. |

There is a reason where the possible best the so called people oriented party will get in Canada is an official opposition. A lot of their socialist policies are not popular for a reason. In my circle of friends full of middle class no one has benefited from the pharma-care and the dental program. ferfer: Yea, right! As long as you have written an encyclopedia about climate change and lay in bed with Greta, we can conclude that you will continue with that idea against the will of the people, even if your predecessor 'died' on that hill and a majority government is unlikely with other parties not on board with said idea.
The reality is that if some section of the Canadian (middle class mostly) is not sold down the river by climate change policy of the liberals, another section (lower + middle class) will be betrayed by the Cons through another unpopular policy. Choose your poison or should I say choose your reward?
There is only one people oriented party in this country that will not sell out to the rich/powerful and it is neither the Liberals nor Cons. And it is the only party that has consistently canvassed for people policies like National food program, pharma-care, dental program and even challenged grocery chains like Loblaws about price gouging etc.....

U-turn? Not yet. He has not repealed it. He can't repeal it until the parliament is called back. He only reduce the rate to zero, which is allowed by the legislation. However, the industrial carbon tax is still in place and he promised to keep it for the large emitters. When they questioned him more on what that means for Canadian industry competitiveness, he said he will apply a carbon adjustment price to imports from countries with no carbon tax. I don't see him letting go of carbon tax. ferfer: I am taking a drama/math/humanities teacher over a career politician anytime, any day. A teacher is a respectable member of any community compared to a politician, any politician.
JT has his foibles but I do not for a minute doubt that his mistakes would not be an exact replica of PP raised to a power of 7 if he were the Prime Minister. He would also let in record number of immigrants simply because it will ameliorate the shockwaves created by COVID and more importantly because of the private sector. PP voted against establishing a National School Food program and it is a fact that his top advisor lobbies for, yes, Loblaws.
We can't take it from MC that he has the pedigree to lead the country in this time of economic uncertainty with his experience. He may be one of the backers of the Carbon tax but he is wise enough to know it is unpopular and he has taken a u-turn on the carbon tax by repealing it. I do not think that those policies are nonsensical, they just went too fast with them in a short period of time without doing due diligence in many areas including the area of public enlightenment. |

406.2 Kg of meth. People are very bold. Most likely not the first time. Based on the observation from the news, "Smuggling of this quantity of methamphetamine cannot fall into Mr. Sidhu's lap.… He did not get involved with this level of trafficking overnight," Sinclair said. It is very difficult to get such jobs. The process involved is very long. I employed someone in 2021 under the old pilot program, the work permit was only approved in 2024. By the time she arrived with family in Canada, I no longer need the service. Good thing it is an open work permit and she got a job with someone else.
