A lot of good and bad can get done with a majority government. With a majority government, it is not difficult to reverse some of the policies of the previous government. Trudeau did the same when he won in 2015. If he wants to stop all of Trudeau/Guilbeault environmental policies and Freeland tax changes, he will have no problem doing it with a majority government.

njambert:
With a majority government, a lot gets done. Unless you want to tell us that Trudeau had no powers and that no prime minister has the power or rights to do anything, then things can eventually get done. How did Trudeau get approved to bring in over 1million immigrants per year in the past 3years? If he could get away with that, why can policies that can affect the nation not be effected by Pierre?
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by lanresz(m): 3:58pm On Jan 10, 2025
You raised valid points. Trudeau's trouble started when he started leaning far left. Same with Harper, his trouble started when he started leaning far right. There is a reason why the NDP always find it challenging to win Federal elections. This is because Canadians do not want a government on the far left. The current liberals are even more far-lefty than the NDP. If the Conservatives win the next election, they do not need to cater to the far-left group. Someone who campaigns to axe the tax will pay for it if the tax is not axed. Are things going to get better? Hopefully, they may. At least let us try someone else. After 9 years of the Liberals, Canada needs a change.

njambert:
The goodnews is he doesn't have to cater for every interest group and he has intimated just that. He doesn't have to cater for climate change and environmentalist fanatics in order to develop the gas pipelines or to axe the carbon tax. He doesn't have to cater to woke and far left extremists inorder to pass laws against degenerate sexual tendencies. He doesn't have to cater to those who scream racism just because more cautious measures will have to be introduced to handle immigration. There's no saviour in this world who will bring an end to all suffering, Jesus ultimately is, and only to Him should we cast our hope for life without sorrow. However, there's hope for a betterment in some areas.

Common sense is far from the current Liberals. It is a pity that Harper didn't do half of what they had done before he was voted out. All economic indices are worse than when the current government took over. Trudeau promised us that the Budget would balance itself. He inherited a balanced Budget from Harper and never ran a balanced budget for 9 years in power. There is a huge difference when a country replaces an Economist Prime Minister with a Drama teacher.
However, Canada does not export oil to the U.S. at a discount because of the Liberals and their environmental rubbish. Although Trudeau stopped the North Gateway pipeline, TC Energy (TransCanada) cancelled the Energy East pipeline due to opposition from Quebec and a lack of government support. If those pipelines are in service, Alberta crudes will continue to trade at a discount to the U.S. crudes partly due to:
• Alberta produces mainly heavy crudes, which must be traded at a discount to U.S. light crudes to be competitive in the markets.
• If those pipelines were built, the total capacity of those pipelines would be less than the total export to the U.S. The clearing market for the crudes will remain the U.S. The clearing price for those crudes in Alberta will account for the cost of transportation to the U.S.

Kenn55:
I'm eagerly waiting for this election. I can't wait to vote out those nonsense liberals no matter who leads them. They are the ones that caused Trump and all the far right guys sweeping the west now to come back. Common sense dem no get.

We export oil to US at a discount not because Canada is caring but because the stupid liberals and their environmental rubbish have made sure no pipeline or oil and gas infrastructure is built in the country so there is no other choice than to sell the oil to the US. Then the US now sells their own oil in the international market at real prices making quick gain on oil sales.
US buys 4m barrels a day of oil from Alberta at discounted price and sell the equivalent amount of their own oil abroad at higher prices and Trump still insult Canada join. Trudeau needs to be flogged.

Yes for LPN. Only English, Maths and Biology require In many colleges. A qualified lawyer from Nigeria would have taken Biology in secondary school.

The bolded phrase has caused so many things. That overconfident disappears when they realized they can't cope coming empty handed. No rent for the first month? That's ridiculous. Is he expecting free accommodation?

Kenn55:
The thinking among these set of people is "make we just enter Canada first". They feel overconfident that they can survive even if they are coming empty handed because in their mind the suffer they have suffered in Nigeria has made them resilient.

Seriously I don't pity people like this. I find it difficult to pity students to some degree. If you falsify your proof of fund and you are here complaining of no jobs, you are on your own. The era of people coming to Canada to study with the hope of paying tuition from working is very new. Before you have three categories of people, graduate students with full/partial funding, graduate students with money from Nigeria to fully cover their expenses, and children of rich parents coming for undergrad. Those were not relying on working here to fund their education.

However, if someone that comes as a PR complains about the system, I can encourage the person and give them suggestions on how to advance their careers. Some time you may have to change career and be very open minded. I have seen a lawyer that decided to go for nursing immediately have landing as an immigrant. After becoming an LPN, he started working on what is needed to be called to bar. He is a lawyer now. The LPN provided fund for him to meet bills before being called to bar. For a new immigrant, it is a long process. Be open minded and don't limit yourself.

Again a student complaining of no fund to pay tuition was not prepared to be a student. It is impossible to work to pay tuition and living expenses.

The problem is that most of these agents only think about their own commission and nothing else. They don't really sit down to understand the product they are selling. I recently relocation from Western Canada to Eastern Canada, many of our people have approached me to sell such products thinking I am a new immigrant. Once they realize that's not the case, they step back.

orjohn24:
It's easy for people to say, "Why didn’t you do your own research" But when you arrive in a new place like Canada, and the people you trust most are extended family and old trusted friends with experience there, you tend to rely on the information they provide. It can be disheartening to realize that, knowingly or unknowingly, they might be the ones to lead you into a worthless investment opportunity!

Whao. We learn each day. I only know RNs that won't consider traveling nurse option.

The $5K a year is the Canada child benefit for a family of 4 with family income of $140K irrespective of the province they reside. One child is less than 6 and the other is between 6 and 12. The amount changes with age.

AirBay:
RN (travel nurse) : Depending on experience. Some earn above 250k per year.

5k in which province..
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by lanresz(m): 1:25pm On Oct 08, 2024
Those nurses making 200K must be nursing practitioners. I have not met RNs making 200K. A hard working doctor will easily make 200K no matter when they migrate to Canada provided they are qualified and have full license.

A family with $140,000 income may still get around $5,000 child care benefit a year.

AirBay:
True, most managers do not earn 200k. Range is usually between 80-160k. Manager na just tag. Though some senior senior managers may get big bonuses and extra cash from profit sharing taking their total earnings above the 200k mark.

I work in the health sector and we have Nigerian doctors, nurses earning 200k-500k

99% of them immigrated 15-30years ago.....make new immigrant chasing 6figures no kill themselves o.

100k is 68k at the end of the year grin 50k is 37k. grin

50k may get around 6-10k from the govt depending on family size. Taking total earning to 47k.

100k gets nothing.. cry

To explain it in a lay man's term. Higher rates make it more expensive for people to maintain their existing debt, reducing the amount of money that they have to spend and, over time, that reduces demand throughout the economy. This decrease in demand will end up reducing inflation rate.

legionISproteus:
but the cost of many things are tied directly to high interest rates. people are paying more for their houses today because interest rates went up. how did it bring inflation under control? I don't understand undecided

This is sad. All these developments are very new. Canadian education like other developed countries ones is not cheap. Working part time to fund education here is almost impossible even for PR and Canadians. When I came as a graduate student with partial funding 21 years ago, students were not allowed to work off campus. So, you are either funded or from a very rich family. It was so bad then to see many places advertising jobs but you can't apply as students. The only solution from the government is to introduce German block system, which will reduce the number of people coming to study in Canada.

affoncad:
Sir/Madam,
Sleeping for two days at a train station is no big deal in canada,. I know a guy who slept at that same train station for a week. Canada is not cheap, and it is not paradise it possible to stay 8 to 11 month as a student without job. Students should come prepared with funding for their education and be well informed that studying in Canada will not guarantee a job to fund their education or PR. Let our people change their mindset, seeing Canada as a place where everything is leisurely. Even now, IRCC has instructed schools to start monitoring student attendance and report any student that misses class or the school licence will be terminated. Canada immigration wants to come out with a firm stand that a study visa is purely for studying!
This young man can still be educated in Nigeria and add French to get PR without all this stress of homelessness. As somebody suggested, the German block system will solve the current problem of students getting stranded due to funding.

This development is very recent. In my over 20 years in Canada living in 3 provinces, people who migrate through the study route are either sponsored by rich parents for undergraduate studies or graduate students with university fundings. This I can say for Canada. It is recently that you find people with established careers coming to do diplomas in colleges.

ednut1:
using 10m- 20m to japa via cos or study visa is a recent development after covid very few people attempted this in the past and they were mostly young people sponsored by family ( unlike this uk rush) . It depends on when the person did medicals. Given how slow Canada immigration is, the medicals may have been done before the person got pregnant. I don't think they can deny someone on work permit entry based on being pregnant. This is one of the reasons why it is difficult to employ a stranger on the home child care program from outside the country. The time to process the application is so long. It may take close to 3 years. I employed a relative in 2021, submitted application in January 2021, they just got passport request.

Taal17:
Ha, how so?
Employer basically filed for you and you're not obligated to work for them

Wouldn't the pregnancy have come up in the medical exam or at the border. Shouldn't they as employer have some access to the medical report?

This is really a difficult one after waiting for 3 years plus. The best you can do is look for possible private individuals looking to hire home support worker on indeed and other job sites. Not many people are qualified to employ a support worker since they must have seniors or persons with disabilities that need the service. Hopefully you find someone that need your service very soon.

Please can anyone be of assistance in getting a new employer under the home support worker pilot? I have an ongoing application with ircc since 2020 and Dec last year we got a mail saying the current employer is not eligible simply because its an agency and not a private individual. We were given 3 months to come up with a new employer as procedural fairness. Our clock is ticking fast and it seems really difficult getting a new employer . The rep we used has equally not been able to change the employer. Please those of you already in there who can assist me with a new employer i will forever be grateful. Thank you

To determine if $17 a hour is enough to get an average life in Canada, you have to indicate where in Canada. Cost of living is not the same for the whole country. 3 months free accommodation sounds unbelievable. When I moved from Western Canada to Atlantic Canada, I got only 2 months free accommodation. So, 3 months free accommodation for a $17 a hour job sounds some how.

TravelRe: My Experience With Nigeria Airways 30 Years Ago(prof Moyo Okediji) by lanresz(m): 3:53pm On Oct 25, 2023
Interesting. Professor Moyo Okediji did not return from a year sabbatical. He made the best decision for himself and his family.

LillyandDaisy:
About 30 years ago, I slept at the Murtala Muhammed Airport for four days.

No, I was not a homeless vagabond.

I had bought the Nigeria Airways ticket to fly to the United States for a one-year sabbatical leave.

But when I arrived at the airport, I realized that my ticket was not honored, though I had bought it legitimately.

Whenever a plane was about to leave Lagos for New York, the NA officials posted a manifest list, and my name was not there.

They would ask me to wait for the next list.

This drama of “Your name is not yet listed, wait for the next manifest list” continued for four days.

I couldn’t leave the airport and return home because I lived in Ile Ife, and had bid my people goodbye for one year. They all expected I would be in NY already.

I was therefore forced to sleep by the door of the NA office at the airport, waiting for the release of the manifest list with my name on it.

I was not alone. There were hundreds of stranded passengers like me there—men, women, young, old, tall, short, thin fat—all sorts of people.

The Murtala Mohamed Airport was different then than what we have now.

There were no security officers. People drifted in and out in their hundreds. It was rowdy. There was no order of any sort. Food hawkers milled among the crowd of the stranded passengers like me, selling hot dogs, sandwiches, puff-puff, moin-moin, gala, meat pie, hamburgers, even rice and dodo.

People hawked sodas such as Cocacola, Fanta, Sprite and malt drinks.

The interior of the airport was packed like the Oyingbo market. There were also pickpockets and other fraudsters pulling fast tricks on unsuspecting victims.
I was hesitant to buy anything. I had changed all my naira to dollars at the rate of one dollar to three naira. But if I wanted to change my dollar back to naira, I could only collect one naira for my dollar at the airport, which would be a loss.

I was desperate when I got hungry. But someone was willing to give me two naira for a dollar, so I changed two dollars. I bought some moin-moin and coke.

The guys who helped me to change my money said I had no hope of traveling unless I was willing to bribe someone.

I was adamant. I wasn’t going to bribe anybody. It was my right to fly out, after all, I had paid for my ticket.

By day four, I lost hope of traveling out. I used my handbag as my pillow and reclined on the floor, to take a nap.

The young woman who slept a couple of feet away from me was also napping, snoring loudly. I asked her earlier, and she said she had been there for almost a week. She said she was ready at that point to accept the offer of a Nigeria Airways official who wanted sex in exchange for helping her to get on the manifest list.

For how long I had been asleep I couldn’t tell, when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I opened my eyes. It was Segun Odegbami, the famous international soccer star, who played for the Green Eagles. I thought I was dreaming. I had met him through a friend, Tunde Fagbenle, and we had shared drinks at Fagbenle’s house in Lagos a couple of times.

I couldn’t refer to him as my friend, and I didn’t even know he would recognize me or remember my name.

I was a fat nobody next to a big star like him, someone for whom Ebenezer Obey had waxed an album, with the chorus, “It is a gooooal, Odegbami,” a bestselling song throughout Nigeria.

When I opened my eyes and it was him, I wanted to close my eyes back, thinking I was just dreaming.

But he spoke to me. “Moyo, what are you doing on the floor here?”

I quickly sat up, wiped my eyes, and smile at him. I narrated my story.

He shook his head, and said with a sigh, “That’s Nigeria Airways for you. I came to see someone off to London, and as I was leaving I happened to see you.”

“Na so we see am o,” I told him.

“Where is your ticket?”

I dipped my hand inside the pocket of my agbada, made out of new Ankara textiles. It had double as my daywear and my pajamas for four days. I retrieved the ticket and gave it to him.

He said, “Excuse me for a minute. Let me go and talk with them.”

Then he went inside the Nigeria Airways office, and within minutes he was back, with two young men.

“Moyo, are you ready to go now,” Odegbemi said, “because a flight is leaving in about fifteen minutes.”

I didn’t need to say yes. My eyes said it all.

The two young men picked up my luggage.

Odegbami gave me a hug and wished me bon voyage.

The two young men led the way with my luggage—just a suitcase and my hand luggage.

They took me to the back of the airport, and there was a Peugeot 505 waiting for us.

They loaded my luggage in the boot and drove me down the tarmac to the huge aircraft about half a mile away.

From a persona non grata, I instantly transformed into a VIP, driven on the tarmac like a departing president.

Nobody checked my luggage for any contraband. Everything was loaded directly on the plane and I was given the luggage tags.

I walked to my seat and sank into it. I couldn’t help but notice that the plane was less than half full.

There were empty seats everywhere when the plane took off. Yet, there were scores of people waiting at the airport, denied their right to fly, after paying their fares.

I remembered the poor woman snoring next to me on the floor at the airport.

Tears began to fall from my eyes.

“If they ever see me again in that godforsaken country,” I swore silently, “they should cut off my head.”
