Politics / Battle Lines Drawn As Dino Melaye Battles Adeyemi by Lanrexoyin: 4:34pm On Dec 04, 2015
There has been an ongoing battle in Kogi state between Dino Melaye (APC) representing Kogi west senatorial district and a senator in the seventh senate, Smart Adeyemi (PDP).

Adeyemi challenged the victory of Dino in the March 28 National Assembly election alleging that electoral irregularities and malpractices were wide spread during the poll. A witness also told the tribunal that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) falsified results.

The tribunal fixed a date for Tuesday, October 10 2015 for the judgment of the suit after weeks of legal fireworks by the affected parties to the petition. The case was led by Justice Akon Ikpeme.

The witness, Feinti Dada, who was his agent at the poll said the exercise was riddled with irregularities across the 21 units of five wards in Lokoja local government area of the state.

He added in a cross examination that the result of the recount ordered by the tribunal showed that INEC recorded voided votes during the election in favour of Melaye.

The petition of Smart Adeyemi eventually was struck out by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Kogi

This displeased Justice Muhammed Adume said it was wrong for the tribunal to strike out Adeyemi’s petition on the grounds of technicalities, instead of substantial justice which remitted to case on trial on merit

Furthermore, the court ruled that Adeyemi did not file his petition within the time frame allowed by law and nullified it forthwith, but Adume however contradicted the decision of the court, saying that there was no sufficient evidence before the tribunal that the petition was filed late.

The tribunal then dismissed the petition of Adeyemi, a one-time National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for late filing.

The tribunal Chairman, Justice Akon Ikpeme, had in the ruling of June 18, held that the Kogi west ex-senator’s case was “incurably defective’’.

When he eventually won the trial, Melaye began singing songs of victory in the court adding that he was sure he was going to win.

He also took to twitter to announce his victory by saying “Praise God. Sen Dino Melaye’s election upheld and Sen. Smart Adeyemi’s petition dismissed for “lack of merit.”

Sports / Davids: Messi Is An Anomaly But Ronaldo Just An Athlete by Lanrexoyin: 4:42pm On Nov 30, 2015
The former Netherlands international believes that the Portuguese is a product of hard work whereas his great rival is completely unique

Edgar Davids has described Lionel Messi as "an anomaly" and Cristiano Ronaldo as "just an athlete", after tipping the Argentina star to land the 2015 Ballon d'Or.

On Monday, it was announced that the pair had been shortlisted for the award alongside Messi's Barcelona team-mate Neymar.

Messi and Ronaldo have won every Ballon d'Or since 2007 and Davids fully expects the diminutive No.10 to increase his lead over his Real Madrid rival to five wins to three when the victor is revealed on January 11.
Sports / Neymar's Right: Ronaldo Should Not Be On Ballon D'or Shortlist by Lanrexoyin: 4:18pm On Nov 30, 2015
The Portuguese was named along with Lionel Messi and the Brazil forward in the final three to win the prestigious prize, but Luis Suarez can consider himself unlucky to miss out

"Lionel Messi and I are here in Zurich every year," said Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2015 Ballon d'Or ceremony. And the world's two most famous footballers will be back in Switzerland again to dispute the individual award next January.

This time, however, the Portuguese is very fortunate to be named among the final three contenders.

The shortlist of three was revealed on Monday and Ronaldo was included alongside heavy favourite Messi and his team-mate Neymar, the Brazilian saying on the eve of the announcement that he believed Barcelona should complete a clean sweep after last season's treble triumph.

"I think I do deserve to be [among the finalists] for what I'm doing," he said. "I would be happy if the trident [Messi, Suarez, Neymar] were all in the three. Thanks to the history we are making and because of what we have conquered, all three of us should be there."

Indeed they should. The Ballon d'Or is awarded due to form in a specific calendar year and while Barca took time to come good under Luis Enrique in the final few months of 2014, they have dominated football in 2015, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Politics / Why APC Senators Stayed Away From Plenary Session Today by Lanrexoyin: 4:20pm On Nov 25, 2015
As the controversy over the assassination attempt on Ike Ekweremadu seems to have doused, the All Progressives Congress senators still did not fail to stay away from the sitting presided over by the deputy Senate president today, November 25.

Senator Ekweremadu presided over Wednesday’s plenary session as the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, had travelled to Ikenne in Ogun state to attend the burial ceremony of H.I.D Awolowo which was scheduled to take place today, Daily Post reports.

It was however reported that unlike the last time the deputy Senate president presided over the plenary, today’s sitting was far from being rowdy.

The sitting had three senators sponsoring a Bill which dominated the discussion at the plenary session.

Sports / Ancelotti: No Competition Between Ronaldo & Bale by Lanrexoyin: 3:19pm On Nov 25, 2015
The former Real Madrid coach says there are no arguments between the Spanish club’s two attacking stars over free-kick duties, with Ronaldo still taking most of their set-pieces

As a Goal columnist, Carlo Ancelotti will provide his expertise and insight on this season’s Champions League through an exclusive series of columns and videos.

When Rafael Benitez defended Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick record earlier this season, he inadvertently struck upon the crux of the problem.

“When we practice in training he hits them well and I am confident,” Benitez said. “He hits them quite well. I will tell them to make you a video.”

Few would argue that Ronaldo’s knuckleballs look good on film; there is no shortage of YouTube compilations of the best strikes of his 13-year career. The more pressing question is whether his swerving shots are consistently accurate enough to justify Ronaldo taking the lion’s share of Real Madrid’s free-kicks.

Benitez’s predecessor, Carlo Ancelotti, thinks so. “Firstly, taking a free-kick is not easy,” Ancelotti told Goal. “Then, not many goals are scored directly from frees. He strikes them well, trains a lot on this, but at the end of the day, I believe that the overriding fact is that it’s not easy to score from a free-kick. He’s certainly not got worse.
Sports / Zidane Is The Right Man For The Real Madrid Job - Ancelotti by Lanrexoyin: 5:22pm On Nov 24, 2015
Los Blancos' former coach says the Frenchman has all the qualities necessary to go on and have a big career as a manager

With the pressure continuing to grow on the under-fire Rafael Benitez, Carlo Ancelotti believes Zinedine Zidane is ready to coach Real Madrid.

Benitez received the backing of Madrid president Florentino Perez on Monday, just 48 hours after the humbling 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Clasico.

Zidane, coach of Madrid's second team, has distanced himself from the position, but Ancelotti feels the France great - who served as his assistant at Santiago Bernabeu for one year - is equipped for the top job.

"He has a stunning CV as a player and is preparing for a big career as a manager," former Madrid boss Ancelotti told RMC Sport, via AS.

"He has all the qualities necessary to be a fantastic manager: charisma, personality and experience.

"In the future he could manage Real Madrid or any other club for that matter. Would he be the right man now? Yes, I think so.

The Italian has heaped praise on the striker and says France will need him at his best if the are to win Euro 2016

Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has described Karim Benzema as the "perfect finisher" and "one of the best players in the world."

Benzema has battled injury and off-field problems throughout the 2015-16 season, but the Frenchman has still managed to score six La Liga goals this term.

The 27-year-old, who is embroiled in a sex-tape blackmail case involving international team-mate Mathieu Valbuena, had not played for Madrid since October 4 due to a thigh problem until Saturday's 4-0 loss at home to Barcelona.
Sports / Benitez Backed Or Sacked? Perez Calls Real Madrid Media Conference by Lanrexoyin: 3:55pm On Nov 23, 2015

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has called a media conference on Monday where he is expected to address rumours that Rafa Benitez's job is at risk.

Los Blancos followed up their loss to Sevilla before the international break with a four-goal defeat at home to Barcelona in the Clasico at the weekend.

That leaves Madrid six points behind Barca, who lead the table, while Atletico Madrid leapfrogged them into second place with their win over Real Betis on Sunday.

Sports / Alves Tells Ronaldo: You Must Accept The Flak! by Lanrexoyin: 3:37pm On Nov 23, 2015
The Brazilian says the Real Madrid ace just has to deal with the criticism coming his way given he so willingly puts himself in the limelight

Barcelona full-back Dani Alves says Cristiano Ronaldo should expect to take most of the blame for Real Madrid's Clasico humiliation.

Barca cruised to a 4-0 success at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, piling the pressure on coach Rafael Benitez, as well as president Florentino Perez and star forward Ronaldo.

But Dani Alves refused to offer any sympathy to Barca's fierce rivals, suggesting criticism comes with the territory for big-name players such as the Portuguese star.

"He's still Cristiano - a top quality player. Perhaps that's the problem," he told reporters.

"How can I say this? He's such a character, he likes to be the protagonist. If you want to be like that, when you win they speak about you and put you in the limelight but, if you lose, you must take the flak.

"If the team doesn't get things right or win it's going to be your fault.

"But we have enough to worry about ourselves without Cristiano. To be honest, I don't care what Cristiano does."
Sports / Benzema Back But Will He Start? How Real Madrid Could Line Up Against Barcelona by Lanrexoyin: 4:58pm On Nov 20, 2015
Rafa Benitez's side were hampered by a series of injuries before the international break but the return of the France international striker will give them a lift

While Barcelona have been sweating over the availability of Lionel Messi, Real Madrid have faced their own fitness issues ahead of Saturday's Clasico.

Karim Benzema has been Rafa Benitez's primary concern as the striker has not played in a competitive match since France's 4-0 win over Armenia on October 8 due to a hamstring problem.

The 27-year-old, who was taken into police custody earlier this month for questioning about his alleged involvement in the Mathieu Valbuena sex-tape blackmail case, has scored four goals in his last three home games against Madrid and also holds the record for the fastest goal ever to be scored in a Clasico with his strike after 22 seconds in 2011.

Rafael Benitez confirmed on Friday that Benzema is back in the squad to face Barca although he has not given any clues as to whether the former Lyon star will appear from the start.

Sports / De Boer Lauds Messi Ahead Of Potential Clasico Return by Lanrexoyin: 5:44pm On Nov 19, 2015
The former Blaugrana defender has backed the Argentine to make the difference in a key Liga fixture, should he be ready to return in the Spanish capital

Lionel Messi can give Barcelona the Clasico edge if he makes his return from injury against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, says former Barca captain Frank de Boer.

Messi is reported to be closing in on a comeback having been sidelined since sustaining knee ligament damage during September's 2-1 win over Las Palmas.

Fellow forwards Neymar and Luis Suarez have flourished in his absence to lead Luis Enrique's defending champions to the top of La Liga and De Boer feels the Argentina superstar's capacity to complement such talents is an enduring quality lacking in his long-time Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

"For me, my personal best player is Messi because he can do almost everything and so if I have to choose one as my favourite it's Messi," he told Omnisport.

"But Ronaldo, I take my hat off to him, because if you can manage to score so many goals every year and never be injured, I think you're also one of the best.

"So it's hard to choose, but if I have to pick one then I will take Messi. I like him more because he gives more.

"He gives 40 assists also in a year and makes [scores] fifty goals and that I like very much about him."

Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez has dismissed suggestions that he is not fully match fit ahead of this weekend's Liga showdown with Barcelona.

The 24-year-old has featured just three times in all competitions for Madrid so far this term due to a muscular injury.

He made his comeback in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Sevilla before the international break, but played just 27 minutes as there were doubts over his fitness.

Nevertheless, James completed both of Colombia's World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Argentina this month and has stressed that he is ready for the Clasico.

Sports / Fabregas: I Wish I Had Played With Suarez At Barca by Lanrexoyin: 10:55am On Nov 17, 2015
The Catalan midfielder admits he would have relished a partnership with the Uruguay forward at Camp Nou and says he hopes former team-mate Lionel Messi is fit for the Classico

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is disappointed to have missed out on the opportunity of playing with Luis Suarez at Barcelona and says he hopes his friend Lionel Messi is fit to face Real Madrid in the Clasico.

Fabregas spent three seasons at Barca, but left the same summer Suarez arrived from Liverpool - in 2014 - meaning the two never played together at Camp Nou.

"Barcelona have fantastic players," the 28-year-old told Goal in an exclusive interview. "The three in attack decide matches, even though the best of them all is missing at the moment - and that's Leo Messi.

"But Neymar has taken a step forward and Luis Suarez is. . . I wish I had played with him at Barcelona because he is a striker with whom I would have had a phenomenal understanding.

"The rest, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and also the defence, which is practically the same (as when I was there), they have a very high level. "
Sports / Clasico Security To Be Increased After Paris Attacks by Lanrexoyin: 10:22am On Nov 17, 2015
Real Madrid's match with Barcelona at the Bernabeu this weekend will be the subject of heightened security measures following last week's shocking events in the French capital

Security around Saturday's highly-anticipated Clasico match between Real Madrid and Barcelona is set to be increased in the wake of last week’s attacks in Paris.

The match falls just over a week after terrorists attacked several areas in the French capital, including the Stade de France where Les Bleus took on world champions Germany.

Over 130 people died and hundreds more were injured in the atrocities, prompting Spain’s friendly in Belgium, which was due to take place on Tuesday, to be postponed over fears the safety of the players and fans could not be guaranteed.

Madrid’s match with Barca at the Santiago Bernabeu is not in doubt, but Concepcion Dancausa, a government delegate in Madrid, has revealed that extra security measures will be taken as two of the world's biggest teams go head-to-head.

“Even the sandwiches will be examined,” she told AS, in reference to Benfica fans smuggling flares into the Vicente Calderon in sandwiches when they played Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in September.

“It’s a case of doing what’s normally done, but with more control. The surveillance as the fans come in and out of the ground will be more thorough. ”
Sports / Yaya Toure Future Under The Spotlight Again by Lanrexoyin: 10:12am On Nov 17, 2015
The 32-year-old had hinted at international retirement but now seems keen on a return at the start of 2016, representing another u-turn in an uncertain period of his career

The midfielder has flirted with the idea of leaving Manchester City on more than one occasion, only to blame it all on the media or other outside influences. Just this summer he left Inter stood at the altar after a transfer had been put in place.

Having captained the Ivory Coast to long overdue Africa Cup of Nations glory at the start of this year, all the signs pointed to Toure's international retirement.

"I think now my target is done," he said. "The time for the youngsters will come soon and we need to let them go on alone."

Toure's importance to City was all too clear while he was leading his country in Equatorial Guinea. Of the six competitive matches played in his absence, the Blues won just once. They were joint top with Chelsea when he left, having clawed their way back over Christmas, but by the time he returned they had essentially blown it; seven points behind and out of the FA Cup as well.

He hasn't played for his country since the penalty shoot-out victory against Ghana in February, and City must have been delighted as he toyed with pulling down the curtain on his international career.

Now, though, he wants to go back.

"I think the next fixture after this will be in 2016, when the qualification for the 2017 African Nations Cup continues. In any case, I'll be ready."

Manuel Pellegrini always insists he is delighted for his players to represent their countries, but you would imagine the prospect of his return will not be relished by everybody at the Etihad.
Jokes Etc / Akpors And The New School by Lanrexoyin: 9:34am On Nov 17, 2015
Akpors moved to a new community with his parents, and was enrolled into primary 3. On the day he resumed school, as a test, the teacher went around the room and asked each of the students to count to 50. Some did very well, counting as high as 30 or 40 with just a few mistakes. Others couldn’t get past 20.
Akpors however, did extremely well. He counted past 50, right up to 100 without any mistakes. Akpors was so excited that he ran home and told his dad how well he had done.
His Dad nodded and told him,
DAD: “That is because you are from Delta State.”
The next day, in English Language class, the teacher asked the pupils to recite the alphabet. It was Primary Three, so most of them could make it half way through without much trouble. Some made it to S or T, but Akpors rattled off the alphabet perfectly right to the end.
That evening, he once again bragged to his Dad about his ‘abilities’ in his new school. His Dad, knowingly, said to him again:
DAD: “That is because you are from Delta State.”
The next day, after Physical Education, Akpors while having shower time with his classmates, noticed that compared to the other boys in his class, he seemed overly “well endowed” down below. He was confused.
That night he told his Dad.
AKPORS: “Daddy, they all have little tiny ones, but mine is ten times bigger than their own. Is that because I am from Delta State too?”
DAD: “No, my son,” he explained, “That is because you are 18.”

The Portugal forward, who has worked under Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, has explained why Sir Alex Ferguson is the best manager he's ever had

Cristiano Ronaldo believes that Sir Alex Ferguson is the best coach he’s ever worked with.

Ronaldo was signed by Ferguson as an 18-year-old for £12.2 million in 2003 and went on to win three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his six seasons at Manchester United.

The Madrid star, who has also played under Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, explains why the retired United boss is the best manager he’s ever had.

Sports / Blind Annoyed By Netherlands's Defensive Frailties Despite Win by Lanrexoyin: 11:50am On Nov 14, 2015
Netherlands head coach Danny Blind rued his team's defensive lapses after conceding twice from set-piece moves in the 3-2 friendly victory over Wales.

The Dutch, who missed out on Euro 2016 qualification following a fourth-place finish in Group A, downed Chris Coleman's side with Arjen Robben netting twice.

However, despite sealing a morale-lifting victory, Blind was more interested at highlighting the areas his side could improve upon.

"It was quite annoying that we have had to weather two goals from set-pieces,'' Blind told SBS6 .

"We just have to pay attention. In qualifying we conceded three or four [goals] from corners or free-kicks. That should really be much better.

"We started well, but fell asleep again and had our backs to the situation. When you have the right focus you do not miss the overall picture.

"We had to come back into the Wales game, while we could have been 3-1 or 4-1 ahead."
Sports / Coutinho & Firmino To Start In Friendly With Wolves by Lanrexoyin: 5:06pm On Nov 13, 2015
The Liverpool manager will look to tackle a few key areas of concern while analysing some of the club's young gems at Melwood

Jurgen Klopp will assess some of his first-team squad as well as a few of Liverpool's young on-loan talents during a friendly game with Wolves on Friday afternoon.

The manager has not been afforded the training time he would appreciate between matches, but the international break offers him an extended period to correct issues in sessions rather than through video analysis.

While he does not have a full roster at his disposal due to national team commitments, Klopp will still tackle key areas of concern.

Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Lucas Leiva, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno and Joao Teixeira will all start in the behind-closed-doors encounter at Melwood.

Brazilian starlet Allan, who won the Finnish league during a temporary spell with SJK Seinäjoki, will also be part of the first XI.
Sports / Nigeria: Oliseh Must Adapt To Overcome Swazi Challenge by Lanrexoyin: 4:52pm On Nov 13, 2015
The significance of Nigeria’s last international – a 3-0 result against arch-nemesis Cameroon – is purely a matter of subjectivity. This is a theme that is hard to dispense with where Sunday Oliseh is concerned: faith cannot be wholly reconciled to rationality, and we all see what we want to.

The scoreline was great, and the performance was much improved, but these were innately riddled with caveats: Cameroon played almost all of the second period with 10 men, and Volker Finke had the five-time African champions listing in the middle of nowhere by the end. Still, you can only beat what’s in front of you, and if for nothing else, the win at least gives the sceptics something to work with.

For the first time since his appointment as Super Eagles boss, Oliseh will go into an international window on the back of overwhelming positivity. This is as much a good thing as it is a bad one: while he gets breathing space, he also loses the chip on the shoulder that seems to fuel modern football management; the constant need to motivate a group of lavishly remunerated professional footballers by appealing to an artificial sense of injustice.
