LiteratureOnline Auction Of Black Maria - The Full Book by LarrySun(op): 7:30pm On Feb 20, 2025
Hello there,

This is Larry Sun (LSD). It is with great joy to inform you that Black Maria is now complete. After ten long years, I've finally been able to finish the story that grabbed me by the neck and refused to let go. Black Maria (Books 1 - 5) has been compiled and formatted into a single document of approximately 1.1 million words in total, and 2000 pages.

However, it is my intention to launch the first sale of this complete book with an auction. This is how it goes:

The auction will begin with an initial sale of five thousand naira (note that this will be the original price of the book after the auction), then everyone interested in purchasing the book will start bidding from that. When someone bids, let's say 5,500 naira, I announce it, then another can outbid with 6,000 naira...and it goes on and on like that until we have the final winner with the highest bid. I'm sure you must have seen how people bid for items. This is just like that. The only difference is that this is happening online. Please save my number (+234 906 175 4872) if you have not done that already, so you can follow the bidding updates on my WhatsApp status posts. If you are sure I don't have your number, please message me so I can save it too. You are free to ask me any question.

The name of whoever wins this bidding war will appear in the acknowledgement of the book, and it shall be there permanently.

It should be noted that Black Maria (Book 5) will not be sold individually until the auction sale has ended. For now, it's the full book in the market. Thanks for your usual understanding.

I am reaching out to you because I believe in your support. It is because of you that I have a career in writing. Thank you for sticking with me from the beginning. I am not taking it for granted.

Let's return to the world of Peter Black, Maria, Basket and Rhoda Gold. What became of them?

BIDDING COMMENCES IMMEDIATELY!

Update 105

“So what did the men want from him?” Basket asked, beginning to get tired of the man’s spiel. He felt that the honourable was intention making small talks to avoid revealing sensitive things that might implicate him. But then again, he had promised the man that he would not arrest him – except he had no choice.

Bode shifted in his seat and said, “This is what I think would interest you the most. The blackmailers told him to find a way to release a prisoner from jail or his secrets would be leaked to the world.” He paused and added, “The prisoner he was meant to release was Peter Black.”

Basket jumped to his feet as if goosed by a loose string in his seat. “What!

“That was my reaction, too, when Banky told me.”

“But how is that possible? How in the world could Senator Bankole command the release of a prisoner? It does not make sense.”

Bode hesitated, “Well, like you know, he used to be the deputy governor of this state – and I was the former governor. That’s why he came to me.” He paused again. “I’m going to speak plainly here since you have given me your word that you are not going to arrest me. You see, Elijah Ajala won the gubernatorial election because of me. I practically put him there, so he is my boy. Bankole knew this, that’s why he came to me. He knew that the governor would do whatever I asked of him. I had no choice but to tell Elijah to release Peter Black from prison.”

Basket frowned. “What do you mean by you had no choice? You could simply have refused the senator’s request but you chose to become an accomplice.”

Bode shook his head. “No, I couldn’t do that.”

“Why the hell not?”

“Bankole is more powerful than you give him credit for. He has always been underestimated all his life, and he managed to climb up to the position of a deputy governor of a state. People overlooked him and he took great advantage of that. He was greatly underestimated to his advantage. From what I heard, there’s a rumour that he is planning to get back on the political horse fully to become a governor or even the president. But I know one thing for sure, he is preparing his son to become the leader of this country in the next one or two decades.”

“What you said still hasn’t explained why you agreed to do what he asked of you.”

“Read the handwriting on the wall, officer. Bankole has a lot of secrets that will plunge this country into chaos if exposed. The secrets will not only destroy me, they will also ruin your career.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Politics is a dirty game, officer,” said Bode, “And a lot of dirty, horrible things have been done in the name of politics. Perhaps that is why the situation of this country is still as it is. Many terrible things have been done. Terrible people have held powerful positions. The world thinks of me as a terrible leader, but compare to some other politicians, I am a saint. But we don’t know the abominations they have committed because they are not in the spotlight, and only a handful of people know their secrets – Banky is one of those people. He has been so underestimated that people lost their guards around him. As I am currently talking to you, Bankole is more powerful than I am – hell, he is even more powerful than the president of this country.”

“Really?” Basket smirked.

“Knowledge is power, my friend. What Bankole knows has made him very powerful. Trust me, you don’t want him to expose what he knows.”

Basket shrugged. “I don’t care if he does or not; all I know is that he is going to jail for the crime he committed.”

“You’re making a grave mistake. Like I said, your career will be over if he speaks.”

“What does my career have to do with his situation?”

“It has everything to do, young man. The legacy you have built for yourself will be ruined if Banky talks.”

Basket stared at the man for a moment, then he shook his head. “You’re trying to drag me into your problem. I’m not going to allow that. I’m not the one who committed a crime. I don’t have any business with the lot of you.”

“You’re speaking like a fool, John Balewa.”

Basket felt slapped across the face. “Excuse me?”

“You have been speaking like a fool since I stepped into your office, but I let all your silly words slide because I was thinking we are both going to reach an agreement eventually, but you’re still acting foolish. How do I deal with a foolish person? I thought you were smarter than this.”

“Watch the way you talk to me, sir,” growled Basket.

“And what are you going to do if I don’t? Who the hell do you think you are? Do you think it is your brilliance that brought you to this position? I made you, John Balewa; I could as well have been your creator. I gave you all opportunity when you were nothing but a rookie police officer who just came to Lagos from Port Harcourt. I know your story; I know your humble beginning. I am the one who contributed to your success. How did you think you climbed to this high position in less than twenty years? Several people have worked all their lives and never reached half the level you attained in ten years.”

“I don’t understand what you are saying.”

“Oh, you will soon understand. Who was your superior at the time you came to Lagos? Who was your mentor when you got to police college in Ikeja for a professional training?”

“How did you know all these?” frowned Basket, now looking at Bode with a different pair of eyes. The feeling of being trapped suddenly overwhelmed him.

A smile crossed Bode’s face. He leaned forward and said threateningly, “We made you, and we can destroy you. Your superior answers to the person who answers to the one that answers to me. You think you are powerful? Oh, you haven’t tasted power.”

“Why are you telling me all these? What’s going on?”

“What actually brought me here is very simple,” the honourable said, “A decade ago, I gave yo a bribe but you refused it; well, what I am going to give you today is an instruction, and you are not going to refuse it. If you do, your career will end; everything you own will be taken away from you. I promise you that you will become nothing. This job is what makes you relevant, and if it is taken from you, your relevance ceases to exist, and your enemies will rejoice. But if you carry out the instruction, there is a lot to gain from it.”

Basket stared at Bode Williams like he was seeing a pterodactyl. He wanted to speak but words escaped him. He did not understand how the narrative suddenly changed. It had been the honourable trying to confess to something, now the man was blackmailing him; this was even more serious than the bribery. And from the way Honourable Bode Williams looked confident, Basket wondered if he would be able to refuse the request – no, instruction – perhaps order.

He was beginning to feel cornered yet again. The thought of losing his job as a police officer filled him with dread. Although he had been contemplating retiring early but there were some criminals he still wanted to put in jail before he did that, most especially Peter Black. If he lost his career now, he would become a laughing stock; Peter would be the winner. He could not let that happen. He dreaded the mockery that would follow, and he would live the rest of his life feeling like a failure. No, he must not lose his career now; he could not afford to. He would have to do everything possible to remain a police officer, at least until he finally put Peter in jail – this time with no hope of escape or being pardoned. If he could do that, he could pleasantly retire and feel fulfilled. As long as Peter was out there, he would not really have peace of mind.

“What you need to do is very simple, Officer John Balewa,” said Bode.

“It’s Chief-of-Police John Balewa,” corrected Basket.

“It’s a straightforward instruction, Officer John Balewa,” Bode Williams said deliberately, staring at Basket square in the eyes.

At this moment, Basket hated the honourable with as much malice as he did Peter Black; he wished the honourable suddenly had a heart attack and slump dead.

“You have to make sure that Bankole does not reveal the secret. He must not tell anyone what he knows.”

Basket frowned. “I don’t understand. How do I ensure that? Am I going to beg him to keep his mouth shut or what? Besides, I don’t even know this secret you are talking about.”

“It’s better that you don’t,” replied Bode. “If you do, you won’t ever recover from it. Just ensure that he does not talk.”

“Like I said – how do you expect me to do that?”

“You’re not a child, officer,” said Williams, “Besides, you have the necessary materials to make sure he does not speak.”

“Wait, I hope what you are saying is not what I am thinking.”

“Have I not stressed the urgency of the matter enough to you? I will be destroyed if Banky talks but you will go down with me. You may think that you have done nothing wrong but that does not matter. Like I said, we made you, and we also have the power to unmake you. You can call my bluff and see what will happen. You need to ask yourself if protecting a person like Bankole is worth your career and everything that you have achieved. The ball is in your court. You can either do what is necessary or do nothing and await the consequence.” He paused and added, “I think it’s time for me to take my leave. But before I do, I want to let you know the importance of making it look like an accident. You should not do it carelessly. According to Bankole himself, he had some people who know these secrets, and he assured me that those people would leak the secrets if anything happened to him. I don’t know if he was telling the truth or just bluffing. But it would be better to remain on a safer side. If a person like you announces to the public that Bankole died from a mysterious circumstance in prison, nobody would doubt it. Whoever is his insurance will also believe you and not reveal that secret. Your reputation in this country precedes you; nobody will have any reason to not believe you.”

“So what you are saying in essence is that I should kill Senator Bankole. You want me to kill a senator? You want me to commit murder?”

“He will probably get life imprisonment or death sentence for what he did anyway,” said Bode, spreading his hands, “You will only be speeding up the process and saving your career in the process. Stop acting like a chicken. It’s not like that would be the first time you have killed a person.”

“I shot some people in the course of my duty,” argued Basket, “What you are asking me to do is murder.”

“Just consider yourself the invisible hand of justice, my friend,” he rose to his feet and patted Basket on the shoulder, “I know you are going to do the right thing. I believe in you.”

When Bode Williams reached the door, he turned around and said to Basket, “After the job is done, perhaps the governor will rescind his pardon. Peter Black might just be returned to prison.”

Update 104

“I can’t believe that you are still holding the events of about fifteen years ago over my head,” said Bode, shaking his head, “You must really have a hard time forgiving people who offend you, officer.”

Basket breathed in and said, “I ran away from home when I was a teenager because my parents were irresponsible. My father and mother were always drunk, and in their drunken state, they became nuisance to the neighbours. But before I left home, there used to be one tree in my father’s compound. It was a mango tree – the biggest mango tree in our street. Its branches spread wide and the leaves on the tree were plentiful. Even when rain fell, the leaves of the tree were enough to shield you from the downpour. Besides that, what I liked most about the tree was the comfort it gave me. Whenever my parents argued with each other, I would simply leave the house and sit under that tree, receiving gratefully the freshness it provided. Under that tree was usually my fortress. I had no friends while growing up because many people I met were often annoying and stupid, but I considered the tree a friend, for it provided me exactly what I needed – succour. Each time I was under the tree, the world was set aright again. My mood was always calm and I was never bothered by my parents’ arguments.

“Then one afternoon, while I was relaxing under the tree, I looked up and saw a snake. It was green and long. Well, those were the only qualities I noticed about the snake because I had taken to my heels. Since the moment I noticed that snake on that tree, I never returned to it again. I became totally detached from that tree. In fact, I was annoyed at the tree. Why would it harbour a snake when it knew how important it was to me and how much I hated snakes? To say I was disappointed was an understatement. The tree was the only thing that gave me comfort, yet it harboured the only creature I hated most in the world. And so for weeks, I harboured grudges against the tree. Each time I came out and saw it, I was always consumed by an ineffable anger. When I could not take it anymore, I picked a cutlass one morning and chopped down the tree. You see, I didn’t just cut the tree, I chopped it – that was how I had grown to hate it. That is exactly the kind of person that I am. I am the best friend anyone can have, but when you disappoint me or let me down, then I will be the worst enemy you can imagine. What is a man if he does not know himself? I am not one to give second chances; the moment you mess up your chance with me, then there is no redemption – we can’t ever be friends again. The phrase ‘forgive and forget’ is the most useless thing people say. It is not enough to forgive a person but you also have to forget? How did the person who coined that phrase not realise that such is practically impossible? Only a retard will forgive and forget. That is not me, anyway – I don’t forgive, let alone forget. So you are right, honourable, I really have a hard time forgiving people – or forgetting what has happened. I have a very good memory.”

The ex-governor stared at Basket and said, “You are one of the scariest men I have ever met.”

“Thanks for the compliment, honourable,” replied Basket, “If your intention for visiting me this afternoon was to find out about my personality, then I am happy to have obliged. Now could you please get out of my office and allow me to concentrate on something more important.”

Bode Williams ate the insult like spaghetti. “What I am about to tell you is more important than anything else.”

“Really?” Basket leaned back and said, “Okay, I’m listening.”

“Like I said, my reason for coming here involves Bankole, but it also involves someone else you are very familiar with – Peter Black.”

Basked leaned forward. Now he was highly interested in what the man had to say. Whatever involved Peter Black always had his attention, no matter how minute or insignificant the information was. Basket wanted to know everything about Peter. If anyone knew about all the meals Peter had been eating since he came out of jail, Basket would be interested in listening to the person tell him. No one had told him, and he had not acknowledged it, but the truth was that Basket was obsessed with arresting Peter Black.

“Did you just say Peter Black had something to do with the arrest of Senator Bankole?”

Bode nodded. “Not just the arrest of Banky alone – Peter also had something to do with the death of the son, Kunle.”

“Do you realise that you are making some very powerful allegations. I hope what you are saying is true.”

Williams frowned. “Well, I don’t know if they are allegations. I’m not even sure if Peter is guilty of the arrest and the killing. What I’m sure about, however, is that Peter Black is involved.”

“Please tell me everything. Don’t leave anything out. Do you want a cup of coffee?”

“No, I’m fine. Thanks for the offer though. Everything started about twelve or thirteen years ago, but I got to know about it around two years ago.”

“Know about what?”

“I was at home when I received a sudden call from Bankole one afternoon. He told me that he was coming to visit me about something urgent. When he came, the things he told me were downright shocking. I could almost not believe what I was hearing because all my life I had never heard something as ridiculous as what he told me. I have come here to tell you this because Banky might have some silly notions in his head when he decides to confess his crimes to you.”

“What silly notion are you talking about?”

Bode hesitated. “Well, he might try to drag me into his crime.”

“And why would he do that?”

“Because he’s insane, that’s why.”

Basket cast the man a suspicious look. “Listen to me, Honourable Williams, if you are an accomplice in his crime, I won’t hesitate to arrest you.”

Bode Williams stood up. “Goodbye, officer.”

Basket looked puzzled. “Where are you going?”

“I’m going home. Obviously, coming here is such a bad idea after all.”

“What about what you planned to tell me?”

“I don’t think it would be wise, seeing that you have threatened to arrest me. I don’t want to put myself in trouble, do I?”

“I’m not going to arrest you if you are innocent.”

“Well, innocence or guilt is relative. I think I’m going to take my chances with Banky. And if he implicates me in his crimes, I will have my lawyers present. Have a nice day, officer. I’m sorry for wasting your time.”

Basket stood up. “What about Peter Black’s involvement that you planned to tell me.”

Bode shrugged. “You will have to get that information from another source.”

“You have to tell me,” Basket’s voice was desperate.

Bode stared curiously at Basket, then a smirk crossed his face. He could tell that Basket was really interested in learning about the story. If he could be smart here, this might just be his ticket to freedom.

“I don’t mind telling you, officer, but I don’t care about going to jail because of it. If you can assure me that you won’t hold whatever I tell over me, then I am going to tell you everything I know about this issue.”

“If you are involved in the crime, I'll have no choice but to arrest you.”

“I think you have a choice. You need to decide which is more important between arresting me and getting more information that would assist you in bringing down Peter Black. And remember, you already have Bankole behind bars – he’s the major culprit in this game, not me. I am only a tool. Give me your word that you are not going to arrest me or I take my chances with my lawyers if I am pulled into this mess.”

Basket took a moment to think about what he had just been offered. First, he considered asking Senator Bankole about this information but he was not sure that the man was going to confess to anything involving Peter. Although he didn’t know why the senator might decide to keep that information to himself, but Basket’s gut feelings told him the senator would be uncooperative. But then again, he realised that Bode Williams was blackmailing him in a subtle manner. Over a decade ago, the man had tried to bribe him but he had refused, now he was blackmailing him. It was natural that he refused this too, but his mind was highly curious. He wanted to understand Peter Black’s involvement in this case. He knew Peter was somehow involved but he had not been able to make the connection. Even when he spotted Murphy Khalid and Solomon Kalu on his way to arrest the senator, he still could not determine what relationship the two men or Peter had with the senator. This might just be his chance to finally connect the dots. Perhaps with whatever information he retrieved from the honourable, he would be able to go after Peter Black once again.

Basket sat back in his chair and said, “Okay, I am not going to arrest you.”

“I want you to give me your word, officer.”

Basket hesitated. “You have my word. I am not going to arrest you. I hope the information you provide will be very good.”

The honourable smiled and sat back down. “It’s a pretty good one.”

“Okay, I am listening, sir.”

“As I was saying, Banky came to me with something incredible. He told me that some people had visited him in his office and had blackmailed him into doing something very hard. He said two men had visited him in his office and told him that they knew his secret.”

“What secret is that?”

“That was the same question I asked him. Then he confessed to me that his son, whom we thought had gone to jail for armed robbery, did not really go to jail.”

“Really?”

Bode nodded. “Bankole told me this himself. He said he bribed some people from putting his son in prison, and instead it was someone else that took his place in jail. Then he flew his son out of the country.”

“Who was the person who took his son’s place in jail?”

Bode Williams frowned. “I don’t think I remember the name of the person. But it was just a nobody, anyway.”

“Was the person Solomon Kalu?”

“Now that you mentioned the name, I think that’s the person.”

“But how is that possible?”

“How do you mean?”

“I put Solomon in jail myself.”

“Then he must have been released, because what I know is that the boy went to jail in place of Kunle Bankole, and he spent ten years in jail.”

“Why would he do something as ridiculous as that?”

“What do you think? It was money, of course. Banky had promised to pay him a certain amount of money when he came out of jail after ten years. But things turned sideways for Banky when those men visited him.”

“Who were those men?”

“I recall him telling me that he recognised one of them as Murphy Khalid, the notorious criminal that broke out of jail about thirteen years ago. I don’t think he recognised the second person. Anyways, these men informed him that they knew about his little arrangement with his son. The only way they could know that was if the person who went to jail in Kunle’s stead talked.”

Update 103

He waited some minutes in the car when he reached the police station because he wanted the group of people that milled outside the station to leave. Bode only climbed down from the car when the people had dispersed. He walked briskly into the station.

“I would like to speak with the chief of police,” he told the three people at the front desk. He could immediately hear some sibilant whispers behind him. Those who remained in the station for one reason or another immediately recognised him. Bode Williams knew that nothing could be done to him here – he was in a police station; no matter what, the police would protect him from whatever mob that might want to attack him.

The police officers at the counter stared at him before they reacted; they tried to hide their surprise but failed miserably. At this point, Bode was beginning to realise that coming here was a very bad idea. He should have found a way to get John Balewa’s phone number and request for a meeting. He could have simply invited the chief-of-police to his home instead of coming here. Why the hell had he not thought about that in the first place? He drove all the way from his house to this place and put himself at risk – what he could have easily avoided.

“Why are you staring at me like you have seen a ghost?” Bode asked angrily, “Did any one of you hear what I said? I would like to speak with Officer John Balewa. Is he in the office?”

The officer in the middle nodded and replied, “Please wait here while I go and call him.” he disappeared down a corridor.

Basket was behind his desk as usual. He was reading the report of a particular crime. Some five vandals had been arrested for breaking an oil pipeline and selling the product in the black market. His boys had made the arrest and the case had been taken to court. Basket had been following the case judiciously because he wanted to make sure that the thieves spent a long time in jail, as long as could be given them. Basket had reached that level where he had zero tolerance for any crime, and this had been inspired by Peter who had managed to slip away from him by making use of Rhoda to carry out his criminal activity. Whenever he thought about it, he would be consumed by anger. Once again, Peter had been one step ahead of him. He was playing draughts while Peter had been playing chess all along – he never saw the final move coming. He desperately wanted something he could use – something that could give him a reason to go after Black once again. All he needed was a reason and he knew he would arrest Peter again. But years had gone by now and nothing concrete had come his way. He was beginning to think that he would never be able to arrest Peter again. If Peter committed no crime, he, Basket, would be powerless against his old friend. It was driving him mad.

A knock sounded on his door. He looked up from what he was reading and said, “Who is that?”

“It’s me, Officer Kukumba.”

Basket frowned. “Cucumber?”

“No, sir. It’s Kukumba – with a K.”

This must have been one of the police officers transferred from another police station to come work under him. He had lost some three police officers a couple of months ago during a drug bust and so three more had been sent to replace them.

“I’m a new officer, sir. I joined this division a week ago,” the young officer said through the door, confirming what Basket was thinking.

“Okay, what do you want?”

“Honourable Bode Williams is at the reception, sir. He is requesting to speak with you.”

“Honourable Bode Williams?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Are you talking about the same Bode Williams?”

“Yes, sir.”

“What does he want?”

“He wants to speak with you, sir?”

“Don’t be a smartass, Cucumber. What does he want to speak to me about?”

“I have no idea, sir.”

Basket believed that this visit must be linked to the arrest he made the night before. He still recalled that he had worked with Bode Williams and Senator Bankole more than ten years ago. Then, he had been a younger police officer who had just been promoted. At the time, he was looking to impress, but as soon as the political campaigns were over, Basket had decided to distance himself from these men because he suspected that they might be corrupt. He had once been offered a bribe by Honourable Bode Williams but he had rejected it then. He was wise enough to understand that if he accepted that bribe at the time, he would forever be in their pocket – and Basket would never be in anyone’s pocket. They had tried to lure him in and he had refused; he still considered that refusal one of the best decisions he had made in his life. Now he could relate with any of them without any fear whatsoever.”

“Okay, please lead him in.”

“Okay, sir.”

Basket heard the young officer’s retreating footsteps. About a minute later, a couple of footsteps were approaching. A knock sounded again on the door.

“Come in, please.”

The knob was turned and the officer named Kukumba stepped into the office – he was followed by Honourable Bode Williams. Basket stared at the young police officer and thought that his name suited him, for he had an oval head that almost resembled a cucumber.

“Thank you, Officer Kukumba,” he said, “You can leave us now.”

Basket rose to his feet and said, “Hello Honourable. It’s a great honour meeting you once again. I must say, I am surprised by your visit. You are the last person I expected to see today.”

“Good morning, Officer,” said Bode Williams, extending a hand for a shake. He felt Basket’s iron grip on his hand. The police officer was still as strong as ever. “I have been reading, watching and hearing about all your exploits in the state. You are a blessing to Lagos State. Since you were posted here, crime in this state has reduced significantly. No other police officer has been able to achieve what you have achieved so far. We all owe you a debt of gratitude in this state. How do we even repay you for all that you have done for us in this state?”

Basket stared at the man and said, “The state government is already repaying me for my service. I’ve only been doing my job, sir.”

“And you are doing it excellently, officer.”

“Thank you, Honourable. To what do I owe this august visitation? You should have called me instead of coming here all the way from your home.”

“I realised that too late. Anyways, I can’t simply return home now that I’m here. Officer, do you remember that you worked in my campaign team about fifteen years ago?”

Basket nodded. “I remember quite vividly. I also remember that you tried to bribe me shortly after you won the election.”

Bode waved his hand as if that detail was not important. “Forget about that. It was only part of politics. I wanted strong people around me. You were one of those strong people. I’m glad that you refused the incentive; it shows that you are a man of great integrity.”

“Why have you come here, Honourable? This is my second time of asking,” said Basket, “I am not one who enjoys irrelevant chit-chats.”

Bode Williams breathed in and nodded his head. “I understand that you are a busy man. I don’t intend to take much of your time. I heard that you arrested two men last night.”

“That’s right,” replied Basket firmly, “Senator Bankole and Honourable Fash.”

“I have come here in respect to Bankole.”

Basket spread his hands. “What does his arrest have to do with you, Honourable? I understand that you two used to work together several years ago, but that does not concern me. If you have come here to solicit for his release, then I’m afraid you have wasted your time. He won’t even be granted bail. He has committed a grave crime and he is going to face the full wrath of the law.”

Bode shook his head. “On the contrary, I have not come here to plead for him or seek for his bail. He can do that on his own. But I am curious – if it was the honourable that killed Bankole’s son, then how come you arrested Bankole too? Isn’t he the victim here?”

“Honourable, I’m afraid what you don’t know supercedes what you do. I’m afraid I can’t tell you anything now. If you are really interested in knowing, you will hear it in court. It would be unprofessional of me to begin talking about his crime at this early stage. Besides, even the senator himself has not called his lawyer. I believe that he is still mourning the death of his son.”

“With all due respect, officer, what you don’t know is far more than what you know. I know more than you think.”

“Excuse me?”

“I have come here to tell you something you might not have known. There are some things I know about Bankole that no other person does. I intend to share that information with you.”

“I will advice you to keep your information to yourself, Honourable. You might need your lawyer to be present if you so desire to share whatever information you have about the suspect.”

Bode smiled. “That won’t be necessary.”

“I need to let you know that if you are in any way associated with the crime for which Senator Bankole was arrested, I may not hesitate to arrest you.”

“I have only come here for justice,” said the honourable, “I could have simply decided to stay at home and not interfere, but I think it would be honourable to inform you about what I know.”

“With all due respect, you don’t strike me as a man of honour, sir,” said Basket boldly.

The words touched the honourable. “What made you say that?”

“Like I said, I still remember that you tried to bribe me several years ago. No honourable person resorts to bribery.”

“That’s about fifteen years ago, officer! Fifteen good years!”

“It does not matter how long. The fact still remains that you were corrupt fifteen years ago, and you are still corrupt even now.”

“If you are using my action of almost two decades ago to judge me, then you are wrong. People tend to change.”

Basket shook his head. “Not in my book. A zebra does not change its stripes. A corrupt politician of fifteen years ago is still the corrupt politician of today. Besides, even when you were in power, you clearly displayed your corruption; you were unashamedly siphoning public funds. You refused to pay the labourers, you did not commission any significant project in the state. The records are there for everyone. Others may be praising you in your presence – that’s not me. You were a greedy politician, and I still believe that you are greedy now.”

Bode Williams stared at Basket for a moment. He knew there was nothing he could do to the man. Several people had tried to silence this officer but they had all failed. Somehow, Chief-of-Police John Balewa often emerged victorious. But Bode also knew about the long-term rivalry that had existed between John Balewa and Peter Black. He knew about it almost fifteen years ago when Basket had newly put Peter Black in jail – he also knew that John Balewa had been greatly upset when the news about Peter’s release from jail came out. Bode was glad that, at least, John Balewa didn’t entirely win against Peter Black. But he had come here for something more important.
But it was still something that involved Peter Black.

Lol! No, I'm not vexing. I'm actually sorry for not updating regularly because even updating can be pretty stressful. I sincerely appreciate those who are buying from me. And I have no ill-feeling towards those that are not; I know that not all fingers are equal. In all honesty, I appreciate their patience with me. It's not easy following a story for a decade. May God bless all our effort. I'm grateful to everyone.

I owe two updates. I'm going to post them later today.
