Update 91

IV

The school was almost over by the time Vincent was returned to the class. He could not confront the new boy because there was a teacher in the class. That was the last period of the day, so Vincent would patiently wait until the school had closed for the day.

Then as the bell was rung for the close of the school, the teacher rounded up his teaching and gathered his textbooks. Then the teacher did something Vincent had not expected. He called Junior Black and told the boy to follow him. Vincent frowned at this. Several thoughts began to circle his head. Did Junior tell the teacher to call him after the class? Had the newcomer reported him already? What did the teacher want with him? He had just joined the class today and he was already becoming the favourite of the teachers – what nonsense! Vincent continued to wonder what the teacher wanted with the new boy. He watched with darkened expression as the boy packed his books, picked up his bag, and left the class.

“What are you going to do now?” asked one of his errand boys.

“Do about what?” Vincent growled at the boy.

“I’m talking about the new boy,” said the student, “Now that he has followed Mr. Okafor to the staff room, what are you going to do now? I know you were waiting for the teacher to leave so that you could deal with him.”

“Did I tell you that? Did I tell you that I was going to deal with him?”

The boy looked confused, “That newcomer disrespected you. Surely, you won’t just allow him to get away with that. You sent words to him to come and pay you some respect and he ignored you. He has to pay for that disrespect. No one disrespects you and gets away with it.”

“And how is that any of your business?” Vincent snapped at the boy. “I know you are looking forward to violence. You want me to hurt the boy. You yearn for blood and tears. You are a terrible child. Just like Miss Bongo taught us in Literature class, you’re like Iago. You are always staying in the shadows and causing mayhem, but no one suspects you because you carry an innocent gait. You whisper dirty words to people’e ears and set the world on fire through their actions. That is exactly what Iago does in Othello. I’m not going to fall for your pranks. I will deal with the newcomer if I want; it is not until you tell me what to do. Now get the hell away from my side before I transfer my anger to you, Lasisi.”

The boy’s eyes opened as widely as they could go, then fear clouded his face. He knew exactly what Bro Vincent could do to him – and no one would be able to do anything if Vincent hurt him, not even his parents. Realising that, he quickly picked up his bag and left the class.
The other students who had been hoping for a physical confrontation between Bro Vincent and the new boy were disappointed too when Vincent picked his bag and left the class. No one had the courage to question him about his intention. And since Vincent left the class, the rest of the class saw no reason to remain there any further. So they also picked up their bags and left the class.

However, contrary to his classmates’ thoughts, Vincent did not go home. As a matter of fact, he had not even forgiven Junior for the disrespect. He still planned to hurt the boy and show him that he was the boss in the class. However, Vincent did not want to do that in front of the class. The fact that the boy had refused to acknowledge him in class in the presence of all the students had put a little bit of doubt in Vincent’s mind. It was clear that the newcomer was not scared of him. Surely, there was something the boy believed in – and Vincent was reluctant to find out about it in the presence of all the other students; he did not want a situation where he would end up being embarrassed or disgraced in front of the entire class. And from experience, Vincent had learnt that one’s physical size did not determine how powerful a person could be.
And so after leaving the class, Vincent hung around somewhere close to the staff room and waited for the boy to come out. He waited for almost half an hour before he finally sighted the boy come out of the room. Vincent studied the boy again; there was no indication of fear or trepidation about the boy. In the past, Vincent had seen students literally pee on themselves because they were afraid of him. Even girls wept like little children and begged him to spare them. He still remembered how Lola Onuka had almost fainted when he screamed at her. He admitted that he had partly contributed to shattering the girl’s self-confidence. But he felt no guilt for it; if a person could not defend themselves, then they were as good as dead. This is a dog-eat-dog world, and you have to be able to stand up for yourself. You don’t have to be all-powerful to do that. You only need to know your rights as a human being. You should be able to say No to people who you are scared of looking in their faces. But Lola was not any of that, and so all the students in the class had decided to use her weakness against her. Vincent knew that all the abuses could stop if he intervened on her behalf, but he was never going to do that. She must learn how to stand up for herself or continue enduring the abuse. Vincent had nothing against Lola Onuka but he was not going to defend her; nothing would make him do.

This new boy was particularly different; he was different than other boys Vincent had encountered. Besides the fact that the boy was not scared of him, there was something about this boy that seemed to bother Vincent. There was a kind of recessiveness in him that intimated danger – Junior Black seemed like a calm but dangerous boy, and it was only Vincent that was seeing this quality in him. Perhaps this was why Vincent had a second thought about directly approaching the boy, even as he saw him come out of the staff room. Rather than approach the boy, Vincent trailed him and watched where he would go. Before he would confront him, Vincent wanted to know what kind of person Junior Black was. He would tail him to wherever he was going. It would be a great advantage to him if he could determine where the boy lived. He didn’t know what he was going to do even if he did, but he knew he would rather know where the boy resided than to go at loggerheads with someone whose origin he knew nothing about – especially someone whose demeanour seemed to indicate danger. Vincent was not sure if the danger he noticed in the boy was of violence or something deeper, he just knew that this was not a student he would be able to easily mess with.

Junior, however, was unaware of the person trailing behind him in the school compound. Once again, he had forgotten about the students his classmates called Bro Vincent. He didn’t care much about the student if all he could do was bully other smaller children. Junior only remembered who Vincent was when he set his eyes on him, otherwise, the big student didn’t exist to him – just like he didn’t exist now.

He walked confidently through the school field. He checked his wristwatch for the time. It was just half past two. He wondered if his father or Tony were already waiting for him. He doubted it; his initial thought was that the school would close by 3 in the afternoon. And that was certainly what his father must have thought, too. But Junior didn’t mind waiting. Actually, he would like a couple of more minutes in the school compound just to catch up with everything he had missed for almost two years – the fields, bushes, flowers, trees, tyres, books, and everything that could be found in a school setting.

As he walked past his classroom, he noticed a girl sitting alone. The class was empty beside the girl. He recognised her as the girl who used to sit close to him in class. The same girl almost everyone in class enjoyed bullying. He tried to remember her name. Was it Bola? Biola? No, he shook his head. That’s not it. Oh, yes! Lola. He could even remember her surname now. Onuka. She was Lola Onuka. Junior stopped and stared at her. She was huddled in a corner. Her schoolbag was on her thighs and she placed her head on it. Junior crossed and stepped into the class.

“Hello Lola,” he said.

She slowly lifted her head and looked up at him. A weak smile crossed her face. “Hi Junior. What are you still doing in school? I thought you would have left.”

“I was about to ask you the same question,” replied Junior, “I was called to the staff room.”

“I hope there is no problem,” said she, “Students called into the staff room are usually in big problems.”

Junior smiled and shook his head. “No, there’s no problem at all. I was called in to help sort out some books.”

“Good.”

“So what are you still doing in class when everyone has left?”

“I’m thinking about how I will get home,” she explained. “I have no transport fare and my house is far away from here.”

Junior frowned. “Did your parents not give you the transport fare?”

She shook her head. “No, that’s not the case. I was supposed to leave with the schoolbus, just like I came this morning.”

“Then why didn’t you leave with the bus? Did you miss it or what?”

“I was not allowed to enter the bus,” she replied sadly.

“I don’t understand. Are you owing the bus fee? Who didn’t allow you?”

“It’s the students who pushed me out. They said they don’t want me in the same bus with them.”

Junior’s frown deepened. “Are you telling me that your fellow students told you to not enter the bus and you listened to them?”

“They all ganged up on me,” explained she, “What do you expect me to do?”

“As long as you are not owing the bus fare, you have as much right to be on that bus as any of the other students. Why do you allow them to treat you this way, Lola? If you continue to allow them to treat you like trash, the bullying won’t ever stop. They will continue to frustrate your life. You need to stand up for yourself. Now how do you plan on getting home?”

“I have no choice but to trek.”

“You need to tell your parents about what you are passing through in school, Lola.”

She shook her head. “My parents have passed through a lot. I don’t want them to start worrying about me, too.” She gave a sad smile, “Don’t worry about me, Junior. I will be fine. There is nothing they bring that I can’t take. Someday, they will get tired of bullying me.”

Junior shook his head. “No, that’s not right. You can’t continue to take all the nonsense they dish at you. You just have to stand your ground against a few of them and all the others will fall in line. That is how this world works. People treat you the way they see you treat yourself. You have to protect yourself first, then you shall be protected, naturally.”

Update 90

For the rest of the school day, teachers of different subjects entered the class to teach. Junior was having one of the best days of his life; he was very eager to learn, and he listened to every teaching with rapt attention. Although most of what they were being taught in class had already been studied by him, he still enjoyed the companionship of having to learn with other students, even though he was sure that most of those students disliked him for not bending to the rules of the class. But Junior was not going to let anyone intimidate him; he had come here only to learn – he hadn’t come to lick anyone’s boots. As long as they were both in the same class, he and Vincent were the same. He didn’t care if Vincent was about ten years older than him.

At break-time, when the student had a half-hour to refuel themselves and relax, Junior thought that Vincent was going to charge at him and try to hurt him. But fortunately for him, Vincent was called to the principal’s office. And he had been there for most of the day. Vincent had created a problem and it was being handled by the principal and other school administrators. Normally, Vincent should have been suspended or expelled from the school, but because he was related to the owner of the school, no one could administer on him the proper punishment – and so everyone had been coping with him ever since his enrolment into the school. Vincent himself knew that he was untouchable, and so he was free to do whatever he wanted in the school. He was rude to the teachers and treated a lot of his fellow students unkindly. In fact, he was excited about the new boys. He had been thinking of a lot of terrible things he was going to do to the boy. He planned to make a clear example out of Junior Black.

But it seemed like his plan was being foiled as he was made to wait in the principal’s office while the new boy was still free in the class. The worst mistake the boy would make in his life was act rude to him. The boy couldn’t have been put in a more dangerous class.

Since Vincent had been called out of the class before break, Junior had forgotten about him and enjoyed his day learning things from the teachers and watching the activities of the students in the class. There were about thirty students in the class; they were a lot fewer than the number of students in each class in Government’s College.

Junior could not help revealing the level of his intelligence as he easily answered most of the questions thrown out by the teachers. By the end of that first day, almost all the teachers noticed him. There was something pleasantly unique about the new boy, and they all discussed him in the staff room during their spare time. They were even more impressed when they learnt that the boy had not attended class in almost two years.

Personally to Junior, however, he felt he hadn’t known enough. The JSCE was coming up and he needed to be the best ever. He knew without a doubt that he was going to pass the examination well – but well was not enough in Junior’s books. He needed to perform excellently. He wanted to be the best student in the whole of the country. He wanted nothing but to be the first – but that was something he would have to work extra, extra hard to achieve. He had a competition, and that competitor was none other than his former brother and best friend – Israel Balewa. Junior needed no one to tell him that Israel had a upper hand over him. The boy, of course, had not missed a class; so it was natural for Israel to have more academic arrows in his quiver. But Junior was not going to give up; he would fight tooth and nail to ace that first position. He wanted to set an outstanding record. He wanted to carve his name in stones. He wanted to be the topic of reference to other aspiring students even in decades to come. Junior wanted to leave behind a record no one had ever achieved in academia.

“Hey Lola,” called one female student, pushing her plate forward, “Go and buy me some food at the restaurant.” The female student was talking to the same female student beside Junior.

Junior watched in surprise as the recipient rose from her seat and collected the plate.

“How much food do you want me to get for you?” Lola asked.

“Buy me what would be enough for me to eat,” replied the other girl.

Junior was amused because the girl giving the order was a lot smaller than Lola. He had no doubt that the girl called Lola would break this girl’s bones if a fight ensued between them. Yet she was acting so meek; she was a lion that had just been tamed.

“Okay, but you have not given me any money,” said Lola, reaching her hand out.

The girl laughed and others close-by did the same.

“Are you really expecting me to give you money?” said the girl, “Aren’t your parents very rich? Don’t expect me to pay you when you come from a wealthy family.”

“But I don’t have money on me,” Lola protested, “What I have on me is only my lunch money.”

The other girl shrugged. “That is none of my business. All I want is for you to buy me some food. I’m hungry. And I’m not going to give you any money. I don’t know how you are going to do it but my food must reach my table in the next ten minutes or you will be in serious trouble.”

Lola looked dejected and said, “Okay.”

She reached into her bag and extracted the money she had kept in it. Junior was sure that was her feeding money. This is wrong, he thought, something like this is not supposed to be allowed in a school like this. He watched as she zipped shut her bag, picked up the plate and headed out of the class. As soon as Lola left, the girl who was oppressing her was laughing hysterically. Her co-oppressors were laughing with her and cheering her on. They were calling her all sorts of proud names, and she sure as hell felt proud of herself. This was something none of the classmates had done to Lola before. Now that she had done it, the girl had only paved the way for others to do the same for her. Certainly by tomorrow, another girl would make Lola buy her some food without giving her any money. Junior knew all these; the handwriting was clearly visible on the wall.

A few minutes later, Lola appeared with the food. All her classmates watched her as she took the food to the girl who intended to oppress her even further.

“Do not put that food on my desk!” thundered the girl. “What do you think you are doing?”

“You told me to buy you the food.”

“You have to go on your knees and present it to me respectfully.”

Lola stood there dazed. “You want me to kneel down for you?”

“Do you have any problem with that?”

Lola shook her head sadly and gently went down on her knees. Then she presented the food forward and placed it before the girl on her desk.

“Now that’s a good servant,” the girl said, patting Lola on the head.

“I haven’t asked you to leave,” the girl said when Lola was rising up. “You will be in that position until I finish this meal. Then you will go and wash my plate for me.”

Junior could not believe what he was seeing. How could something like this go on in a school? He was surprised that almost every student in the class was enjoying what was happening here. They were all laughing, having a good time at the expense of another person. They didn’t even care about the girl’s mental health. Whatever the girl called Lola might have done wrong to them, she certainly didn’t deserve being treated this way. But he couldn’t intervene – not yet; this was just his first day in school. Besides, he already had his own problem to deal with. Sooner or later, Vincent would return to the class, and there would be trouble for him. But surprisingly, Junior was not scared of Vincent anymore. He was not even afraid of trouble. He would rather die than allow himself be treated the way these terrible people were treating Lola. Why couldn’t she even change her school to avoid this bullying? Why couldn’t she report to the school authorities? Why couldn’t she fight back? Junior was sure that only few of the students in the class would be able to best Lola in a physical combat. She already had a very mature body. Her hips had already grown big and her breasts were full, which complemented her slightly plump body. If not for the hips and breasts, she would have had the stature of a tomboy. Event with that shape, she was not looking bad; she had the appearance of a coke bottle. She was dark-skinned which glowed under the open light of the day. No one would ever call Lola Onuka an ugly girl, especially with her Coca-Cola bottle shape.

Lola remained on her knees until the girl finished her food. When the girl was done, Lola packed the plate and left the class once again. And once again, the oppressor’s friends hailed her. The girl felt like a queen indeed. Lola finally returned with a clean plate and gave it to the girl. Finally, she was allowed to return to her seat – that was when the bell for break-over was rung.

As she returned to her seat beside Junior, the boy spoke to her for the first time.

“Why did you let her treat you that way?”

As usual, Lola was trying her best to fight off the tears coming to her eyes. She felt sorry for herself; this was the feeling she hated most – the feeling of helplessness, of being pathetic.
She looked at the new boy and shrugged her shoulders. “There’s nothing I can do about it.”

“Of course there is,” said Junior, “You can always say no.”

She shook her head. “I would only be drawing unnecessary trouble to myself. I don’t want trouble.”

“You can always defend yourself against her. Can’t you fight for yourself?”

“She’s not the only one I would be fighting,” explained Lola, “I would be fighting almost the entire class. I don’t have the strength for that kind of fight. Almost everyone in this class hates me.”

“Then you should report what they are doing to you to any of the teachers. I’m sure the teachers will put them in their places.”

“That will only make things worse for me. Reporting to the teachers in the first place is what landed me in this situation. They are going to make life worse for me if I report them again.”

“You can’t continue allowing them to treat you this way, Lola.”

“I know that it’s going to stop someday,” she responded, “Sooner or later, they are going to grow tired of oppressing me and channel their attention on something else – or someone else; you, for instance.”

“Me?”

“You’re the newcomer. They are going to frustrate you.”

“I’d like to see them try.”

She stared at him curiously. “You feel so very confident.”

“I think you need a little bit of confidence, too.”

“What are you going to do when Bro Vincent returns to the class? You disrespected him. He’s not going to forgive you.”

Peter scoffed and said, “He should be worried about what would happen to him.”
