The House of Representatives has faulted the decision by the Federal Government to suspend the plan to partially reopen schools for pupils in final classes to take external examinations.

The Committee on Basic Education and Services particularly criticised the decision to disallow Nigerian pupils from sitting for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination to be conducted by the West African Examination Council for the 2019/2020 academic session.

Schools at all levels have been shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
.
The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had earlier in June said the Federal Government, in what it called “safe reopening of schools,” had approved the resumption of pupils in graduating classes, including Primary 6, Junior Secondary School 3 and the Senior Secondary School 3.
.
In approving the resumption of graduating classes, the government said water must be provided in schools for hand-washing and both pupils and teachers must wear face masks while observing social distancing.

Later, the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, had during the press briefing by the PTF announced that the 2020 WASSCE would hold between August 4 and September 5.
.
But the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday said all federal schools would remain closed until it was safe to reopen them.

Adamu also urged state governments that had announced schools’ resumption plans to rescind such.

The minister stated that WAEC could not determine the resumption date of schools for Nigeria. He alleged that the council announced the date of examination while the government was still consulting stakeholders on what to do.

Reacting to the development, Chairman of the committee, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, however, expressed the displeasure of the lawmakers through a statement issued on Friday, titled ‘WASSCE Should not be Cancelled.’

Lebanese Ambassador Walks Out On Reps

A drama played out at the venue of a meeting called by the House of Representatives on Thursday when the Lebanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Houssam Diab, staged a walk-out.

Diab, shortly after entering Conference Room 236, New Building, House Wing of the National Assembly complex, walked out on the Committee on Diaspora Affairs who he was to meet.

Also at the meeting were the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr Zubairu Dada; Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Julie Okah-Donli; officials of the Federal Ministries of Justice and of Labour, Employment and Productivity as well as Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, among others.

It was learnt that the ambassador was expecting a closed-door meeting with the lawmakers but met other government officials and journalists at the venue.

Miffed by what he saw, Diab walked out of the venue at around 10.50 am as the meeting was about to start in the open.

Chairman of the committee, Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, had said she was shocked that the “ambassador will just get up and walk out on us”.
.
While some lawmakers and officials followed the ambassador, the committee called for a closed-door session, sending journalists, security men and aides out of the venue.

Emerging from the meeting, Akande-Sadipe said, “It was an informal meeting because the Ambassador was nice enough to join us at the meeting. There is no law that says he has to be here today but because he has an interest in the joint relationship between Nigeria and Lebanon.

A nurse, Ogundimu Monilola, has been arrested for helping a CAC Pastor, Oluwafemi Oyebola, to procure family planning care for his 24 – year – old biological daughter which he impregnated three times in Ogun State.

Monilola is the Assistant Chief Matron at the State General Hospital, Idiroko. She denied carrying out any abortion, but the Police said she had in her statement earlier, admitted performing abortion on the girl.

Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 19 gubernatorial election in Edo state has denied pouring acid on a fellow student during his undergraduate days at the University of Benin.⁣

We had this very confrontational group and one evening, somebody reported to us that they beat up a final year student who was also close to us and they mentioned the names of those involved, and we said no, this is bad.⁣

“Don’t also forget too that I was a students’ union leader, very prominent in the students’ union congress. So, myself and some persons who heard about this complaint said let’s go and see the people concerned and talk to them.⁣

“We went there and met with the people concerned. They opened the door for us and we were discussing the matter under a very cordial atmosphere only for some people to come in and before we knew it, there was smoke in the whole place and somebody shouted acid and was screaming. It was then I realised that somebody has poured acid on somebody and I quickly rushed to the security post. I brought them in and we took the young man to get first aid treatment.⁣

Professor Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health says demand for oxygen by coronavirus patients in the state has slightly increased.⁣
As a result of the development, Abayomi said the state of government is intensifying efforts to make oxygen available for the patients.⁣

The commissioner made this known on Friday, July 3, 2020, at a Zoom webinar by the Lagos Civil Society against COVID-19.⁣

Speaking during the session, Abayomi said once patients who need oxygen get treatment and become stable, they’ll be moved into isolation centres.⁣
.⁣
He said, “We noticed that there is a slight increase in the demand for oxygen. Patients are coming in with breathlessness and sometimes they present (themselves) to other hospitals in need of oxygen.⁣
.⁣
“So, we are trying to make oxygen available across the local government areas so patients can get oxygen treatment to be stabilised. Once they are stable, they can now be moved into isolation centres and get more medical treatment and hopefully, we can rescue them from getting into a more critical stage where we may now need to consider ventilating.⁣
.⁣
“We’d rather not ventilate. There are about five levels of oxygen therapy before we get to the ventilation stage and if we can use those levels and avoid ventilating patients, we’ll rather go down that route. But that depends on getting the patient early enough.”⁣
.⁣
The commissioner advised Lagosians to always go for testing early if they noticed COVID-19 symptoms before their conditions escalate to the critical stage.⁣

He said, “If they are feeling unwell, they should not automatically think it is malaria or typhoid or anything else. If they are feeling unwell and there is a fever, body pains, cough and signs of breathlessness or exhaustion, then it’s important to get tested for COVID-19 and assess their respiratory function so they can be admitted to an isolation centre early enough to prevent getting into a severe or critical state.”⁣

Abayomi further said the state government currently tests about 1,000 people a day and hopes to attain 4000 per day.⁣

The Nigerian Air Force has promised to end the ongoing war against Boko Haram in the North East before the end of this year.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, gave the assurance on Saturday in Maiduguri while addressing troops of the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole, saddled with the task of ending the war on terrorism in the North East.

Abubakar said the Nigerian Air Force must ensure that the territorial integrity of Nigeria is not undermined by any individual or group of individuals

He said, “We must, therefore, keep working hard and I am very sure at least, before the end of this year or latest by the end of this year, we will be rounding up this operation. So work towards that and rest assured that the Nigerian Air Force will continue to support you.

The National Assembly on Wednesday announced the suspension of the Special Public Works programme under the National Directorate of Employment to cushion the effect of COVID-19 pandemic.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, had approved the engagement of 774, 000 Nigerians under the scheme.

By the arrangement, 1, 000 Nigerians who would earn N20,000 each on a monthly basis for three months are expected to be recruited in each of the 774 local government areas, of the country.

The programme was expected to take off in October this year.

But the nation’s parliament on Wednesday said the programme has been suspended following the disagreement between it and the Minister of State for Employment, Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo, on Tuesday.

The spokesperson for the Senate, Ajibola Basiru, who announced the suspension of the programme at a press conference in Abuja, said the National Assembly has summoned the Minister in charge of the Ministry to appear before the federal legislature, to explain the recruitment modalities

He said, “In view of the foregoing, the implementation of the programme shall be on hold pending proper briefing of the National Assembly by the Minister of Labour and Productivity.”
