Nairaland General6 Things Everyone Needs To Know About Life by latestupdate(op): 9:26am On Aug 15, 2018
1. Realize that nobody cares, and if they do, you shouldn’t care that they care.

Got a new car? Nobody cares. You’ll get some gawkers for a couple of weeks—they don’t care. They’re curious. Three weeks in it’ll be just another shiny blob among all the thousands of others crawling down the freeway and sitting in garages and driveways up and down your street. People will care about your car just as much as you care about all of those. Got a new gewgaw? New wardrobe? Went to a swanky restaurant? Exotic vacation? Nobody cares. Don’t base your happiness on people’s caring, because they won’t. And if they do, they either want your stuff or hate you for it.

2. Money is cheap.

I mean, there’s a lot of it—trillions upon trillions of dollars floating around the world, largely made up of cash whose value is made up and ascribed to it, anyway. Don’t engineer your life around getting a slightly less tiny portion of this pile, and make your spirit of generosity reflect this principle. I knew a man who became driven by the desire to amass six figures in savings, so he worked and scrimped and sacrificed to get there. And he did… right before he died of cancer. I’m sure his wife’s new husband appreciated his diligence.

3. You are responsible to everyone, but you’re responsible for yourself.

I believe we’re responsible to everyone for something, even if it’s something as basic as an affirmation of their humanity. However, it should most often go far beyond that and manifest itself in service to others, to being a voice for the voiceless. If you’re reading this, there are those around you who toil under burdens larger than yours, who stand in need of touch and respect and chances. Conversely, though, you’re responsible for yourself. Nobody else is going to find success for you, and nobody else is going to instill happiness into you from the outside. That’s on you.

4. Learn to see reality in terms of systems.

When you understand the world around you as a massive web of interconnected, largely interdependent systems, things get much less mystifying—and the less we either ascribe to magic or allow to exist behind a fog, the less susceptible we’ll be to all manner of being taken advantage of. However…

5. Account for the threat of black swan events.

Sometimes chaos consumes the most meticulous of plans, and if you live life with no margins in a financial, emotional, or any other sense, you will be subject to its whims. Take risks, but backstop them with something—I strongly suspect these people who say having a Plan B is a sign of weak commitment aren’t living hand to mouth. Do what you need to in order to keep your footing.

6. Money is expensive.

I mean, it’s difficult to get your hands on sometimes—and you never know when someone’s going to pull the floorboards out from under you—so don’t be stupid with it. Avoid debt on depreciating assets, and never incur debt in order to assuage your vanity (see rule number one). Debt has become normative, but don’t blithely accept it as a rite of passage into adulthood—debt represents imbalance and, in some sense, often a resignation of control. Student loan debt isn’t always avoidable, but it isn’t a given—my wife and I completed a combined ten years of college with zero debt between us. If you can’t avoid it, though, make sure that your degree is an investment rather than a liability—I mourn a bit for all of the people going tens of thousands of dollars in debt in pursuit of vague liberal arts degrees with no idea of what they want out of life. If you’re just dropping tuition dollars for lack of a better idea at the moment, just withdraw and go wander around Europe for a few weeks—I guarantee you’ll spend less and learn more in the process.

Jobs/Vacancies5 Proven Reasons Why Employers Are Rejecting Your CV Without Even Reading It by latestupdate(op): 7:34am On Aug 06, 2018
How long have you been job searching? How many CVs have you sent without hearing back from the employer?

The questions on your mind now would probably be “What is wrong with my CV?” “Is my CV being seen?” “Am I less qualified for all jobs I apply for?”

I sat down with Ms. Muthoni Ndegwa a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing to shed more light on why employers reject CVs without even reading them.

At the end of the day, it could be that you are qualified for a job, but your CV is a total turn off. Here is how;

1. You don’t name your CV appropriately
According to Ms Ndegwa, a majority of CVs fail to get the employer’s approval because of how they are saved.

Think about it; if an employer is receiving thousands of applications on a single position with no proper naming, how are they going to keep track of all the CVs?

To be on the safe side, name your CV accordingly. For this she recommends that you name your CV by your first and last name.

“This will give the recruiter an easier time when short listing and even keep track of all the applicants,” she says.

For instance, you could name your CV as ‘Lilian Wamaitha CV’ or ‘WamaithaCV’.

It’s that simple.

2. Sending your CV as a “forward”
I am not a recruiter but I have had so many of our readers send their CVs to me for a job.

However, the problem is not sending the CV but how you send it.

If you are in the habit of forwarding your CV and I mean from the last one your sent, I am here to tell you that this is one of the mistakes that recruiters don’t forgive easily.

It not only shows a lack of focus but it brings you out as lazy.

I mean, how simple is it to create a completely new email when applying for a job?

3. Sending your CV accompanied by lots of attachments
Often employers have about 7 seconds to scan through your application to determine if they will shortlist you for a job.

One of the mistakes that job seekers make is sending so many attachments for a single job application. This will include a CV, cover letter, all their certificates and some even take it to the extreme by attaching their birth certificate as well as health records.

Go through the job description and note what the employer wants. If they say send your CV only, kindly do not send a cover letter along. If they say to email your applications, a CV and a cover letter will do.

Avoid attaching your certificates when applying for a job unless the employer has specifically asked you to.

Chances are, they will tell you to bring the other documents along when they shortlist you for an interview?

What does this means then? It means that your CV should be comprehensive enough and tailored towards the job you are applying for.

4. Saving your CV In the wrong format

Word and PDF format should be the only systems to use when sending your CV to potential employers. Avoid sending your CV then saving it in a format that cannot be accessible.

The end result? Employers will not get a chance to have a look at it and it is your entire fault.

“I have had applicants sending CVs by sharing it on Google docs where I have to have permission to view the file, something which is impossible,” says Ms Ndegwa.

To be on the safe side, just save it as a word document since it’s the easiest.

5. Your CV is too long
The length of your CV depends on your working experience but having a very long CV runs the risk of an employer discarding it before getting a chance to read it.

You can’t have 2 years experience and afford to write a 10 page CV. The recruiter has 100 more CVs to shortlist so chances are that your 10 page document will be rejected. An employer will simply move on to the next, more shorter and organized CV.

In this competitive job market, applying for a job and getting invited for an interview is quite a big challenge. However, if you stay away from these mistakes, you will increase the chances of a recruiter considering your CV for a job offer.

Phones7 Secret Android Functions Most Users Don’t Know About by latestupdate(op): 6:49am On Aug 03, 2018
There probably isn’t a person now who hasn’t got an absolutely indispensable smartphone in their pocket. However, despite this fact, there aren’t many people out there who know about all the incredible things these devices are actually capable of.

The easiest way to save your battery power

If you choose a black or simple dark background for your screen, the automatic pixel highlighting will turn off, and you’ll notice that your device keeps its charge for much longer. This feature isn’t available for all Android devices yet, but it’s already implemented on most Samsung smartphones and tablets. Give it a try!

Text-to-speech

Not only can you read this article but you can also listen to it if you have an Android device. So if you prefer to hear incoming information rather than see it, go to Settings -> Accessibility and turn on the Text-to-Speech Output option.

Smartphone remote control

Just go to Settings -> Security -> Device administrators, and check the boxes next to Android Device Manager, Remotely locate this device, and Allow remote lock and erase. Now if you lose your smartphone, you can locate and block it without losing your data via this website.

Turning on Guest Mode

If you would like to temporarily give your phone to another person yet keep your personal data confidential, use Guest Mode. Swipe down from the top with two fingers, and touch the user icon on the upper right. The Add guest icon will appear, and you’ll be able to choose which actions the person handling your smartphone will be allowed to take.

Screen magnifier

People with poor eyesight often have no idea how much this feature can help them. Just go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Magnification gestures. Then you’ll be able to zoom in on any part of the display just by tapping it.

Control your smartphone with head movements

There are situations when you just have to use your gadget but your hands are otherwise occupied or it’s just too cold outside to take your warm gloves off. However, there’s a solution for this! After installing a free app called EVA Facial Mouse you’ll be able to control your Android device with movements of your head! The detailed guide on installation is here.

A secret game

Starting with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Google puts a small secret present for users into all their devices. However, finding it may prove to be quite difficult. Here are instructions on how to do it despite the odds. First, go to Settings and choose About phone or About tablet. Quickly tap Android version several times, and when a small marshmallow shows up on the screen, quickly tap it again, and a special mini-game will open.

Romance10 Questions To Ask Your Partner In Order To Build Trust by latestupdate(op): 6:48am On Aug 02, 2018
Board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Susan Edelman says that the key to building a healthy and long-standing relationship is communicating through asking questions. The questions themselves will bring up the character of one person and indicate how open they are willing to get and if they take criticism well. These questions will either build trust or shed light on deeper issues that were always lurking.

Bright Side gathered a list of 10 questions that, according to Dr. Susan Edelman, will help you and your partner open up to each other and learn more about the types of individuals you are.

1. How close are you with your family?
Dr. Edelman says that “asking someone about their family and whether they’re close can build trust and emotional intimacy.” Every family has some kind of dysfunctionality and opening up about it lets you know why your partner is the way they are and acts the way they do.

2. What do you find hard to talk about with me?
Many couples find it hard to talk about certain matters with each other. It is easier to find out what these matters are and why they are reluctant to talk them out with you. Their answer might be a bit judgmental for you, but you have to be accepting if you want to build total trust between the 2 of you.

3. What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Revealing the one accomplishment that your partner is most proud of shows their ultimate goal in life. It is a way of asking what their main goal is — a question that they may not be able to be completely honest about since it may lead to other information.

4. What’s your take on our relationship?
Nobody likes being asked directly whether they love their partner and how much. The above question is a more casual approach of getting the answers you are looking for. You get to see how your partner feels about you and how they think your relationship is going without having to say any big words that they may not be ready to say just yet.

5. What memory of yours is the worst?
This question will bring intimacy the same way the question about your partner’s family will. People find it easy to talk about happy moments, but they refrain from thinking and talking about their sad moments. Opening up about them means opening a window to their heart and their past.

6. What was the last thing you cried about?
Crying is a very deep emotion that gets brought up by very unpleasant situations or feelings. It is a continuance of the previous question. Being able to talk about something painful means that you trust the person you are opening up to with your pain.

7. What is this one thing you would change about yourself?
Depending on the answer you will get to this question, you will see whether your partner recognizes the negative parts of themselves and whether they want to change them. If so, it means that they want you to know their disadvantages and help them change them.

8. What would you do if you had only 6 weeks to live?
This is a very deep hypothetical question that invites your partner to think about the things that matter the most to them. It will make them do some soul searching so that they’ll be able to share with you their ultimate goals and desires that were always there.

9. What constitutes a perfect day for you?
Every person has different sources of joy and with this question, you will know exactly what these sources are. It is important to know the wants and needs of your partner and for them to reveal them to you requires them to open a small part of their heart to you.

10. What are the 5 things that you are most thankful for right now?
Being thankful for your life means that you appreciate the people and things around you and that you realize the importance of not taking what you have for granted. Hearing what your partner is thankful for shows you what they value the most in life and what they would like to keep on having in their lives.

Bonus

Another very important question is whether your partner trusts you with their secrets. J. Hope Suis, who is a relationship expert, says that it is important to know whether your partner feels comfortable revealing to you even the deepest and most embarrassing secrets. If not, then you probably have serious problems to solve. If, on the other hand, the answer is ’yes’, then this means that you’re heading in the right direction and that you will need to be as open as your partner.

Nairaland GeneralSchoolgirl Born With Extra Arms On Her Torso Is About To Get Surgery! by latestupdate(op): 6:35am On Jul 31, 2018
A schoolgirl in the Philippines with two extra arms and malformed fingers hanging from her torso is to have surgery to get the unwanted appendages removed.

Veronica Cominguez, from Iligan City, was born with the extra limbs and an oblong-shaped growth attached to her stomach. The body parts belong to her parasitic twin, which failed to develop properly in her mother’s womb.

The 14-year-old schoolgirl has seen the parasitic limbs grow with her, and she even takes time to clean them and trim the nails.

Veronica said the limbs are heavy and can inhibit her movement, and even leak.

She said: “When I was little, I thought it was just a foot. But as I grew up, it became bigger.

“It keeps swinging. My dress often gets wet.”

But now, after years of dealing with her undeveloped ‘twin’ growing out of her body, locals have raised money for Veronica to go and have surgery in neighbouring Thailand to get it removed.

Veronica’s mother Flora said the family have a history of producing twins, and even though she had not had a proper visit to a doctor during her pregnancy, she was expecting twins and had even given them both names.

But the hopeful mother had not expected that one would be undeveloped and give her otherwise healthy daughter two parasitic limbs.

She said the discharge that comes out of Veronica’s protrusions can sometimes contain blood.

She said: “The liquid that comes out of the opening smells bad, like human excretion.”

But luckily for Veronica and her mother, Veronica’s doctor at the Philippines Children’s Medical Centre, Dr Beda Espineda, said the surgery was a simple procedure that would get rid of her unwanted limbs without much trouble.

He said: “Most of these cases can be removed because, usually, the body structures involved are not vital.

“Most of them are just attached to the skin or bones. For surgeons, it is easy to remove.”
