Nairaland / General / 15 Words You Should Eliminate From Your Vocabulary To Sound Smarter by Leadn(m): 3:11am On May 04, 2015
Okay, so I noticed nairalanders (myself occassionally) have some proproblems with using the right vocabularies. Thankfully, I found this post on Mashable (Nairalanders prefer Tonto dike stories, so Seun and his mods serve those alot from lailasblog.

Anyway, to cut the long story short, this piece would help you speak/type smarter.

You want your readers to hear you out, understand your message, and perhaps be entertained, right? Here's a list of words to eliminate to help you write more succinctly.

1. That
It's superfluous most of the time. Open any document you've got drafted on your desktop, and find a sentence with "that" in it. Read it
out loud. Now read it again without "that." If the sentence works without it, delete it. Also?
Don't use "that" when you refer to people. "I have several friends that live in the neighborhood." No. No, you don't. You have friends who. Not friends that.

2. Went
I went to school. Or the store, or to church, or to a conference, to Vegas, wherever it is you're inclined to go. Instead of "went," consider drove, skated, walked, ran, flew.

There are any number of ways to move from here to there. Pick one. Don't be lazy and miss the chance to add to your story.

3. Honestly
People use "honestly" to add emphasis. The problem is, the minute you tell your reader
this particular statement is honest, you've implied the rest of your words were not. #Awkward

4. Absolutely
Adding this word to most sentences is redundant. Something is either necessary, or it isn't. Absolutely necessary doesn't make it more necessary. If you recommend an essential course to your new employees, it's
essential. Coincidentally, the definition of essential is absolutely necessary. Chicken or egg, eh?

5. Very
Accurate adjectives don't need qualifiers. If you need to qualify it? Replace it. "Very" is intended to magnify a verb, an adjective, or
another adverb. What it does is makes your statement less specific. If you're very happy? Be ecstatic. If you're very sad, perhaps you're melancholy or depressed. Woebegone, even.
Very sad is a lazy way of making your point.
Another pitfall of using very as a modifier? It's subjective. Very cold and very tall mean different things to different people. Be specific. She's 6'3" and it's 13 degrees below freezing? These make your story better while also ensuring the reader understands the point you're making.

6. Really
Unless you're a Valley Girl, visiting from 1985, there's no need to use "really" to modify an adjective. Or a verb. Or an adverb. Pick a different word to make your point. And never repeat "really," or "very" for that matter.

That's really, really bad writing.
If you are visiting from 1985? Please bring the birth certificate for my Cabbage Patch Doll on your next visit. Thanks.

7. Amazing
The word means "causing great surprise or sudden wonder." It's synonymous with wonderful, incredible, startling, marvelous,
astonishing, astounding, remarkable, miraculous, surprising, mind-blowing, and
staggering. You get the point, right? It's everywhere. It's in corporate slogans. It dominated the Academy Awards acceptance
speeches. It's all over social media. It's discussed in pre-game shows and post-game shows.
Newsflash: If everything is amazing , nothing is.

8. Always
Absolutes lock the writer into a position, sound conceited and close-minded, and often open the door to criticism regarding inaccuracies. Always is rarely true. Unless you're giving written commands or instruction, find another word.

9. Never
See: Always.

10. Literally
"Literally" means literal. Actually happening as stated. Without exaggeration. More often than not, when the term is used, the writer means "figuratively." Whatever is happening is being described metaphorically. No one actually "waits on pins and needles." How uncomfortable would that be?

11. Just
It's a filler word and it makes your sentence weaker, not stronger. Unless you're using it as a synonym for equitable, fair, even-handed, or impartial, don't use it at all.

12. Maybe
This makes you sound uninformed, unsure of the facts you're presenting. Regardless of the topic, do the legwork, be sure, write an informed piece. The only thing you communicate when you include these words is uncertainty.

13. Stuff
This word is casual, generic even. It serves as a placeholder for something better. If the details of the stuff aren't important enough to be included in the piece? Don't reference it at all. If you tell your reader to take your course because they'll learn a lot of stuff? They're likely to tell you to stuff it.

14. Things
See: Stuff.

15. Irregardless
This doesn't mean what you think it means, jefe. It means regardless. It is literally (see what I did there?) defined as: regardless. Don't use it. Save yourself the embarrassment.

Whether you're ghostwriting for your CEO, updating a corporate blog, selling a product, or finishing your doctoral thesis, you want to keep your reader engaged. These 15 words are a great place to start trimming the fat from your prose. Bonus? You’ll sound smarter.

Computers / Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg's Husband Dave Goldberg Is Dead by Leadn(m): 10:03am On May 03, 2015
Dave Goldberg, the chief executive of SurveyMonkey and husband of Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, died Friday night, his brother announced Saturday.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared a Facebook post from Goldberg's brother, Robert Goldberg, which said the 47-year- old father of two had "passed away suddenly last night."

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Robert Goldberg asked that people respect the family's privacy and leave comments on Dave Goldberg's Facebook page in lieu of donations. "No words can express the depth of loss we feel, but we want his children to learn how much he meant to all of you," he wrote.

"Dave Goldberg was an amazing person and I am glad I got to know him," Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg added.

Sandberg and Goldberg married in 2004, according to a New York Times Wedding announcement. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and worked at several technology and music companies before starting at SurveyMonkey in 2009, according to his profile on the online survey company's website.

"Dave's genius, courage and leadership were overshadowed only by his compassion, friendship and heart," said a SurveyMonkey statement posted on Facebook. "His greatest love was for his family. Our sympathy goes out to them and to all who were touched by this extraordinary man. We are all heartbroken."

Nairaland / General / Man Sues Hospital After His Leg Is Discovered In Garbage by Leadn(m): 1:09pm On May 02, 2015
What will you do if your amputated limbs find their way into a garbage truck instead of the routine incineration? Simple! Sue the damned hospital, and that's what John Timiriasieff did. angry

A south Florida man is suing a hospital for emotional distress, saying his leg was amputated and thrown in the garbage with his name tag still on it.

John Timiriasieff, 56, had his right leg amputated below the knee in October at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables.

“Rather than properly disposing of the plaintiff’s limb as expected and as required by Florida law, Doctors Hospital threw the Plaintiff’s amputated limb into the garbage, with tags indicating it belonged to the Plaintiff,” according to the lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court.

A month later, Timiriasieff said his family was contacted by homicide detectives investigating if he had been the victim of foul play.

When the family went back to the hospital to find out what happened, they were told it would “provide no explanation for what had occurred,” the lawsuit said.

Doctors Hospital Inc, part of the Baptist Health South Florida Inc, said it could not discuss the incident in detail because of patient privacy considerations.

“However, we can say when Doctors Hospital was notified of this situation, hospital leaders took immediate and appropriate measures to address it,” it added in an emailed statement. “Proper procedures have been reinforced at the hospital to prevent similar situations from happening in the future.”

Normally, amputated limbs are incinerated by hospitals, said Clay Roberts, a lawyer for Timiriasieff.

Roberts said he wrote to the hospital in January but got no response.

In the lawsuit, Timiriasieff described the hospital’s conduct as “outrageous and beyond the bounds of human decency as to be regarded as odious and utterly intolerable in a civilized community.”

The leg was discovered at a waste management facility and reported to police.

Roberts said his client is upset by the hospital’s unwillingness to accept responsibility for the severe emotional distress he endured as a result of its negligence, and failing to protect his private medical information.

“I have heard of people having the wrong limb removed but hospitals aren’t supposed to throw them away,” he said.

The case is John Timiriasieff vs. Doctors Hospital Inc, #2015-009583-CA-01.

Celebrities / Royal Baby : Duchess Of Cambridge Gives Birth To Daughter by Leadn(m): 12:54pm On May 02, 2015
The princess – who is fourth in line to the throne – was “safely delivered” at 08:34 BST, the palace said in a statement.

The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth of the baby, who weighed 8lbs 3oz (3.7kg).

Both Catherine and her daughter are “doing well”, the statement added.

The duchess had earlier been admitted to the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital where their first child Prince George was born in July 2013.

The statement from Kensington Palace added: “The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.”

The latest royal joins the line of succession behind her grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and brother Prince George.
The name of the baby will be announced in due course.

Crowds began gathering after it was announced Catherine was in labour

The reporters, the camera crews, the hardy fans who’ve been camping outside had settled in for a long labour. It wasn’t to be.

The news came in just after 11:00 BST – the duchess had given birth to a daughter just two-and-a-half hours after arriving at hospital.

As news filtered through outside St Mary’s there were cries and cheers and an official town crier made his own birth announcement.

It’s now a mass of media, police, royal fans and curious passers-by. The wait now begins again – will the duke and duchess and their new princess leave hospital today? All eyes are on the Lindo Wing door.

Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: “Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their baby girl. I’m absolutely delighted for them.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg tweeted that he and his wife Miriam wished the family “all the best”.

And Labour leader Ed Miliband wrote: “Congratulations to the duke and duchess on the birth of their daughter. Wishing them lots of joy and happiness – and hopefully some sleep!”

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said: “It’s wonderful news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a healthy new baby girl.

“Like many here and abroad, I’m delighted for the royal couple on this special day. May God bless them and both of their children with love, health and joy.”
Some fans of the Royal Family have been outside the hospital for days

A large number of journalists, photographers and broadcasters had gathered after the announcement this morning that Catherine was in labour.

Following the announcement of the birth, standing on the steps of the Lindo Wing, unofficial town crier Tony Appleton told crowds: “We welcome with humble duty the new baby of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

“The princess is fourth in line to the throne.”

The new royal will not be overtaken in the line of succession by any future younger brothers.

Under new rules which came into force in March, male bias was removed from the succession rules.

She will be known as princess after a Letter Patent was issued by the Queen.

It declared: “All the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of prince or princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour”.

Nairaland / General / Google Executive Among Dead At Nepal Quake by Leadn(m): 12:12pm On Apr 27, 2015
NEW YORK (AP) — Dan Fredinburg, a Google executive who described himself as an adventurer, was among the hundreds who died in a massive earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday.

Google confirmed his death. Lawrence You, the company's director of privacy, posted online that Fredinburg was in Nepal with three other Google employees climbing Mount Everest. The other three, he added, are safe.

Google would not give further details. According to the technology blog Re/Code, Fredinburg was an experienced climber who co-founded, in his spare time, Google Adventure. The project aims to "translate the Google Street View concept into extreme, exotic locations like the summit of Mount Everest or the Great Barrier Reef off Australia," according to Startup Grind, a global startup community.

Fredinburg also helped start Save the Ice, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about global warming "through adventurous campaigns and events around the world," according to its website.

Fredinburg started at Google in 2007. He served as product manager and the head of privacy at Google X, the company's secretive arm best known for "moonshot" projects such as the self-driving car.

Google said it has launched a "person finder" tool for Nepal to help people find loved ones in the aftermath of the quake and "is working to get updated satellite imagery to aid in the recovery effort." Google says it is committing $1 million to the quake response.

The actress Sophia Bush, who has appeared in photos with Fredinburg posted by entertainment outlets, called him "one-of-a-kind" in a post on Instagram.

"A dancing robot who liked to ride dinosaurs and chase the sun and envision a better future for the world. His brain knew how to build it," she wrote. "His heart was constantly evolving to push himself to make it so."

Science/Technology / 'james Bond' Rejects Sony's $5m For Placement, Says Sony Phone Isn't The Best by Leadn(m): 10:50am On Apr 27, 2015
Sony really wanted to have a Sony phone featured in the recently released James Bond movie "Spectre", but it seems the James Bond star act Daniel Craig didn't think Sony phone is best and thus subsequently rejected the deal - A whooping $5m for himself and 18million for marketing.

Sony's cellphone division, Sony Mobile, like many of us, really wanted a relationship with 'James Bond' - Daniel Craig. But the actor rejected their advances, according to leaked emails from last year's Sony Pictures hack.

The company offered Craig $5 million to use a Sony phone in the forthcoming James Bond movie, Spectre. He turned it down, apparently because Sony phones aren't cool enough for James Bond.

This email from George Leon, Sony's executive vice president of consumer marketing, indicates that Craig and director Sam Mendes met with Barbara Broccoli, daughter of Albert Broccoli who produced the original James Bond films, to discuss the possibility of product placement in Spectre.

The deal would have included $18 million for marketing, in addition to $5 million for Craig. But the talks don't seem to have gone very well. A second email from Andrew Gumpert, President of Worldwide Business Affairs and Operations for Columbia Pictures reveals a competing offer from Samsung and the cruel letdown from Craig and Mendes.

"BEYOND the $$ factor, there is, as you may know, a CREATIVE factor whereby Sam and Daniel don’t like the Sony phone for the film (the thinking, subjectively/objectively is that James Bond only uses the 'best,' and in their minds, the Sony phone is not the 'best')."

The message is clear. Sony — you're just not cool enough, especially not for James Bond!

Politics / Aisha Buhari: A New Style Of First Lady In Nigeria? by Leadn(m): 8:46am On Apr 09, 2015
Abuja (AFP) - "Few would have believed that the taciturn, austere General Buhari had a soft, smiling and sweet woman at home," the Vanguard daily said after the former military ruler was elected Nigeria's next president.
Related Stories

Aisha Buhari remained in the shadows for most of the election campaign but could now impose a very different style from the current First Lady at the presidential villa Aso Rock in Abuja.

Little is known for now about the First Lady elect other than a few details in the Nigerian media: she is 44, married her 72-year-old husband in 1989 after he divorced his first wife the previous year, and they have five children together.

"I met Aisha Buhari three times, and she seems to be a very humble person, very friendly and a good listener," said lawyer Ebere Ifendu, head of the Women in Politics Forum group in Abuja.

The current First Lady, Patience Jonathan, wife of the outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan, has a very different public profile.

She is well-known to journalists and mimicked by comedians for her boisterous public appearances as well as political and financial scandals.

"Patience has been like a bull in a china shop. No control whatsoever," said Yemisi Ransome-Kuti, head of the Nigeria Network of NGOs.

"We are very hopeful that we will have a very different First Lady, who will bring calm and harmony at the presidency."

- Calm and relief -

In the large house in a residential area of Abuja where her husband Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was watching election results come in, Aisha Buhari's calm demeanour contrasted with the tumultuous scenes outside.

The official vote count was under way and the electoral commission was drip-feeding results for the presidential election state by state until Buhari took an unassailable lead.

The APC high command announced victory for their candidate and the news spread around the country, sparking scenes of jubilation, notably in the north's biggest city, Kano.

Dressed in a cream-coloured tunic and an orange and pink embroidered headscarf, Aisha Buhari seemed calm and also relieved, despite the magnitude of what had just happened and what was to come.

"The long journey has come to an end," she told AFP, referring to the election campaign.

But she admitted to "mixed feelings" about the campaign, a low-key reference to the low blows and personal attacks aimed at her husband from the ruling party.

Jonathan's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused Buhari, a northern Muslim, of supporting radical Islam, of failing to secure his secondary school certificate and even having terminal cancer.

Aisha Buhari preferred instead to talk about the positive aspects of the rollercoaster ride that had led Nigeria to its first democratic transfer of power between parties at the ballot box.

Nigeria had nothing to fear from her husband, she said.

"I know him personally. Not as a leader of Nigeria. I know him as my husband and I think Nigeria should feel comfortable with him. He will get there," she added.

- 'Mama Peace' -

Patience Jonathan for her part tended to add fuel to the flames during the campaign, going as far as urging PDP supporters to "stone" anyone shouting "change" -- the APC campaign slogan.

The comments sparked outrage in the APC and led to a furious debate in the Nigerian media.

Patience Jonathan -- who styled herself "Mama peace" -- is used to media scandals.

Even before the election of her husband as head of state in 2011, she was suspected by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2006 of having laundered a vast sum of money.

In 2012, she became "permanent secretary" of the oil-producing southern state of Bayelsa, where Goodluck Jonathan is from and was a former governor.

The opposition heavily criticised the appointment, decrying "nepotism" and "favouritism".

She also attracted the ire of civil society when in the aftermath of the mass kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls in April last year, one of the leaders of the "Bring Back Our Girls" movement was arrested after meeting the First Lady at the presidential villa.

"Maybe she misunderstood her role as the First Lady," suggested Ifendu.

"There's no official role for the First Lady in Nigeria. It's not in the constitution," added Ransome-Kuti.

Instead, it often depends on what weight the president gives it.

"What we are hoping for is more decorum from the office of the First Lady," she said.

Science/Technology / Best Performing Phones Of 2015 So Far by Leadn(m): 2:39pm On Apr 02, 2015
Benchmarking site AnTuTu has released it’s best performing chips so far following the end of Q1 of 2015. The results from the benchmarking site’s analysis are courtesy of user-submitted data gathered from 160 countries over the course of the three months from January to March. Then the mean score is calculated for each device, but different chipsets within the same model get a separate listing.

According to AnTuTu’s benchmark report screenshot attached above, the best phones of 2015 so far are:
Samsung Galaxy S6
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
HTC One M9
Samsung Galaxy S5 (European)
Meizu MX4
Google Nexus 6
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Motorola Droid Turbo
LG G Flex
OnePlus One

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge variants are the top two smartphones both sporting Samsung’s Exynos 7420 chipset. Meizu MX4 the only chinese brand on the list is powered by a MediaTek MT6595 SoC 64-bit chipset. It’s also note-worthy that Samsung has the highest number of devices on the list including the Galaxy Note 4 and the upgraded Samsung Galaxy S5 which runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 chipset.

There’s also the battle for the best GPU’s and once again, Samsung’s EXYNOS 7420 GPU, the octa-core Mali T760 is the best in the world for Q1 of 2015 with a benchmark score of 20725. The Adreno 430 inside Qualcomm’s 810 and 805 follow closely with 18936, and 16286. Mediatek’s PowerVR 6200 inside the MT6595 is last with a score of 12364, just below the last Qualcomm 801’s Adreno 330 which has a score of 13198.

Just came across this on facebook from a friend, and thought to share:

Dear Patience Faka Jonathan,

How is everything going for you and the rest of the people in Aso Rock?

I write this letter in response to your statement, “We are not conductors so we don’t ask for
change”. I just want to tell you that in the real sense of it, bus conductors do not ask for CHANGE. It is usually the passengers who ask for CHANGE.

Your husband, Goodluck Jonathan was chosen as the driver to convey Nigerians to their destination; PDP was appointed the conductor; and the Nigerian masses were and are still the passengers.

As passengers, we had paid our bus fares in 2011 using the vote currency and now, we are asking, demanding for CHANGE as we approach our destination, 2015.

Oftentimes, bus conductors do not agree to give the passengers their CHANGE easily (at least not without a fight or exchange of words ).

Like the bus conductors we know, PDP does not intend to give us the CHANGE that is due us even when they know this is the right thing to do.

But we the Nigerian Masses (who live withoutcbasic amenities; who are unemployed; who do not feel secure at home and in public places; who have been designated as targets for shooting practice etc.) have decided to get our CHANGE from the conductor (PDP and Cabals).

You see the wind of change has so caught with you. This is why even you ought to vote for CHANGE.

Thanks for gathering your things as you prepare to quit Aso Rock back to Otuoke or Okrika, the choice is yours.

Yours sincerely,

Lookman Alawaye Esq.
(A LEGITIMATE PASSENGER)

LOL... I kind of found that "thanks for gathering your things" really hilarious cheesy

not a bad phone actually. Though at the moment, I'm not very keen on the specs. It's just an infinix zero in an innjoo design build.
