Science/Technology / Smartphones With The Fastest Download Speeds 2015 by Leadn(m): 1:03am On Nov 20, 2014 |
Just came actoss this very interesting piece and thought I should share. Enjoy Questions about the performance of various smartphone brands can fuel the most heated of flame wars, but thanks to researchers at Aalto University in Finland, the debates may finally be put to bed once and for all. The academics' Netradar app has so far measured the real world upload and download performance of over 4,500 smartphones across different networks around the world. The results are likely to raise some eyebrows. In the race for speediest phone, first place went to Samsung's huge Galaxy Note 3 phablet, but the real talking point is the second place finish of the relatively unknown OnePlus One. The results show an average of every handset's top five fastest download speeds recorded on the Netradar app, with the Galaxy Note 3 and OnePlus One recording incredible results of 137.8Mbps and 137.4Mbps, respectively. It's a bit of a coup for the OnePlus One, the debut handset from Chinese manufacturer OnePlus which currently sells the handset on an invite-only basis (with a few pre-order dates usually open for just 1 hour) - especially as it topped Apple's new iPhone 6, which came third with speeds of up to 136.3Mbps. Aalto University's School of Electrical Engineering has been measuring and sharing the quality of mobile broadband since 2013 through the Netradar app, which is available free to download for almost any mobile operating system. It works by anonymously gathering data about phone and mobile internet performance around the world including Europe, Asia, and the US. "We are talking about real speeds that people actually get when using their phones. We can analyse that data by looking into upload and download speeds, latency, which operator, network and device is used and so on," says Professor Jukka Manner, head of the Netradar project. "What really has surprised me is how big the differences between smartphones are. A big price tag doesn't necessarily guarantee fast internet." The phenomenon is clear with the 8th fastest handset, Nokia's Lumia 1520 phablet, which is almost 30 percent slower than the Note 3, which retails for around the same price unlocked. Looking through the best-selling phones in the UK for September, HTC's One M8 is way off the pace with a top speed of 90Mbps – in line with the last generation Apple iPhone 5S and 5C. Unsurprisingly, the difference 4G makes to a handset is also huge with the 3G-only iPhone 4S left far behind with 12Mbps. These are the second set of results from Netradar (the first were published in March) and even with only two sets of results it shows how quickly the sector changes. Previously the highest performer was LG's G2; seven months on, it's now seventh, while its successor, the G3, is just a place above in sixth. It's all about the upload But download results are only half the story. In today's world of social sharing there is increasing emphasis on upload speeds to accelerate everything from uploading photos to Flickr and Instagram, sharing a video on Facebook or starting a video call. "I think that the impact of 4G will be the most significant on upload speeds as they could be ten times faster than now. But if a device can't reach those speeds, it doesn't matter how fast your mobile networkbis," says Manner. Looking at the upload speeds, the picture changes significantly. Notably the OnePlus One, iPhone 6 and LG G3 all drop out of the top 10, despite reaching speeds of between 41Mbps and 43Mbps. Instead the Samsung Galaxy S5 leads the way with an upload speed of 47Mbps. It's closely followed by the Galaxy S4 with LTE+ (also known as I9506), LG G2 (with the newer G3 surprisingly back in 32nd place with 42.8Mbps), Nokia Lumia 920, and Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Oldies continue their comeback in the uploads categories as the iPhone 5S climbs into the top ten ahead of the iPhone 6. Meanwhile, the HTC One M8 is relatively lacklustre here as well, coming 49th with an upload speed of 38.8Mbps. Again the iPhone 4S emphasises the importance of having 4G, as its 3G restriction means it's way down the list with a top upload speed of 4Mbps. It's joined here by other high-profile 3G-only phones like the original Samsung Galaxy S3 (a 4G variant did follow) and Nokia 808 PureView which both clock in under 7Mbps. Separately the Netradar results also serve as a timely reminder that not everyone is using a cutting-edge device. In fact, most results were gathered from the near three-year-old Samsung Galaxy S II which has topped 100,000 measurements. Similarly second place went to the two-year-old Sony Ericsson Xperia Acro S, a midrange 3G-only smartphone. Nordic advantage What about the carriers? Analyst Ovum recently surprised many concluding the US has faster broadband than any European country. In sharp contrast, Netradar's mobile broadband data places the US way down in 26th place with average combined 4G and 3G download speeds of just 5.3Mbps. The UK does little better coming 20th with 6.1Mbps and neither country comes close to the two dominant regions: Asia and the Nordics. Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland are inside the top ten countries with the fastest average mobile broadband, though the clear leader is Singapore (16Mbps) followed by Switzerland and South Korea. Spain fights back for Europe, while Hong Kong and Japan complete the strong Asian showing. Importantly for users, these average speeds fall well within the capabilities of most smartphones. That said the fastest network speeds recorded show handsets can be tested to their limit. Germany produced the fastest individual recorded speed at a whopping 170.576Mbps. Finland isn't far behind with 164.2Mbps while the rest of the top 10 is populated by Singapore, Hungary, Denmark, France, Norway, the UK and Latvia while Canada brings up the rear at 93.9Mbps. Netradar publishes a map of its real time measurement data for those keen to see how their location and operator measure up. Manner stresses this data shows dislocation between the highest peak speeds of 4G in ideal conditions and the averages users typically experience. Particularly in different areas within a country. He also states that recording real world measurements (affected by problems like location, network congestion, and data plan caps) are key to building meaningful data. "Unlike some apps, we are not a signal tool. In truth, signal strength doesn't tell you much about what can be expected or measure the quality of an internet connection in a certain location. You can have a good signal but if, for example, the network is congested the signal strength won't make any difference. We focus on the speeds that can realistically be experienced," Manner says. This determination to expose the reality behind our mobile broadband experiences drove Manner and two Netradar colleagues, Sebastian Sonntag and Lennart Schulte, to publish the paper 'Mobile Network Measurements - It's not all about signal strength' (subscription required) last year. As Netradar measurements continue to build, it is clear carriers and mobile phone makers will soon have nowhere left to hide. http://www.zdnet.com/who-makes-the-fastest-downloading-smartphones-in-the-world-hint-its-not-apple-7000035282/ |

Crime / Aunt Cuts-off 3-year Old Nephew's joystick by Leadn(m): 10:26am On Nov 19, 2014 |
A 37-year-old woman in China got so angry that her three-year-old nephew walked in on her while she was using the toilet that she cut his penis off. Xue Paan, was supposed to be looking after her sister's son, Qiang Qiang, while his mum went to visit a neighbour nearby but when the little boy interrupted her as she was texting her boyfriend, and asked if he could play a game on her phone, the furious aunt stormed into the kitchen, picked up a knife and hacked off the boy's penis. The little boy's mother Cai Tuan, 27, ran back to the house when she heard child scream only to find that he had fainted and was in a pool of his own blood. "I had popped out to see a neighbour and was only gone 30 minutes when I heard Qiang Qiang scream. I ran back to the house and couldn't believe what I saw. Qiang Qiang had fainted and was lying in a pool of blood. Next to him was a knife and his penis. It was simply horrific. My sister, his aunt, had gone. His parents rushed him to a hospital where doctors were able to re-attach the appendage in an emergency procedure after 3 surgeries before heading to a specialist clinic in Beijing for further treatment. His aunt who was later arrested, faces 5 years imprisonment for the cruel act. http://gistscrib.com/aunt-cuts-3-year-old-nephews-penis-in-china/ |
Education / 2 Months At Home , Fed Poly Oko Students Write Apology Letter To Rector by Leadn(m): 1:10pm On Nov 18, 2014 |
The Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra state schooling activities have been on a lock down for over 2 months now, citing a decision by the schools authority to descipline students for insulting the rector, Prof. Godwin Onu. The polytechnic which sprang into normal activities after ASUP’s prolonged strike July of this year, went ahead to conclude the previous academic session, rush over 2nd semester exams and begin a new academic session. Normal activities were thought to have began in earnest, until the SUG elections which saw all candidates for SUG president dis-qualified and a female (who won the vice-president of the student union government) was unanimously announced winner of the election, started a new episode of the sorrows of students. The birth of CBT examinations in Oko Following the imposition of a female as the SUG president, the Rector of the Polytechnic Professor Godwin Onu, decided to implement the computer based system of taking examinations, which have originally been refused by the students of the institution, citing time management, hanging computers as reasons for refusing the use of computers for taking examinations. However, this time all pleas fell on deaf ears of Rector of the institution, who insisted examinations must be held using computers. Angry students who felt the rector was being a dictator decided to voice their displeasure, disconnecting his speech with chants of “we no go gree”, “no cbt” and that was how everything started. According to our source, the rector of the polytechnic angrily left the gathering and vowed to deal with the students. A few days later, the school management posted on the notice boards within the school that the ND 2 and HND 2 of the polytechnic were going to embark on 3weeks suspension. The suspension was duely carried out and ended on 12th of November, which was supposed to be the new date of exams for the school. Unfortunately, on resumption, the Rector of the polytechnic decided to “deal” with a select departments, asking them to go and write an apology letter, a letter of undertaking, and ask key people in the school to sign including the school’s anti-cult, the chief security officer of the school, their respective HOD’s, their respective Deans, and the bursar of the institution, after which they invite their parents to come to the school for “briefing”. Other students of the school are asked to pay their fees before sitting for their examinations. Students of the polytechnic have been in their various hostels and lodges for well over 2 months without engaging in any schooling activity and are bitterly complaining of the situation of the school, which is keeping prospective graduates from leaving the school environment on schedule. When we tried to contact the school for comment, we were told the Rector of the school travelled to India and only he has the power to discuss the issue at hand. http://gistscrib.com/2-months-at-home-federal-polytechnic-oko-students-write-apology-letter-to-rector-no-exams-till-further-notice/ |

Nairaland / General / Foul Stench Engulps Moscow by Leadn(m): 9:15am On Nov 11, 2014 |
Moscow (AFP) - A foul odour enveloped the Russian capital throughout the day on Monday, with concerned Muscovites flooding authorities with complaints and officials scrambling to locate the source of the stench. Predictably, wits in Moscow had a field day, with many joking that the gates of Hell opened up in the city of some 12 million. Residents of Moscow began complaining early Monday of the "unpleasant smell of sulphur, hydrogen sulfide and oil products in the air," MosEcoMonitoring, an environment watchdog in Moscow, said in a statement. The concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the air briefly exceeded the norm while the sulphur dioxide was within limits, the watchdog said. Authorities warned Russians against panic. "The smell of hydrogen sulfide is not dangerous," the emergencies ministry spokesman told AFP. Moscow's chief toxicologist Yury Ostapenko also sought to allay fears. "The appearance of smell is more unpleasant than dangerous," he said, speaking on radio. "This is unpleasant but it makes no sense to worry that we are going to get sick right now." By Monday evening the stench eased but the mystery deepened when the authorities said a local oil refinery was to blame, but its owner denied any problems. The emergencies ministry pointed the finger at faulty air filters at a refinery in southeastern Moscow, but Gazprom Neft, the oil arm of state gas giant Gazprom, which controls the refinery, denied the claim. "The refinery is working in an ordinary mode," Gazprom Neft said in a statement on Monday evening, adding that its own labs did not register any spike in the concentration of hydrogen sulfide. "Did the gates of Hell open up in Moscow?" one Russian, writing under the nickname Yurii Eagle, asked on Twitter. "What is this smell?" "Let me remind you that 'Interstellar' also begins with the smell of smoke, dust and all of that," said another Twitter user, referring to a new science fiction film depicting an apocalyptic future on Earth. In 2010, amid the worst heatwave in its history, noxious smoke enveloped Moscow as fires burned outside the Russian capital. The smoke crept into apartments, offices, stores and even underground into the Moscow metro, forcing Russians to wear surgical masks or flee the debilitating combination of smog and high temperatures. |

Events / Guy Uses 99 Iphone 6 To Propose And Got A NO! by Leadn(m): 7:28am On Nov 11, 2014 |
Holy heavens! 99 iphone 6 to propose?! And still got the NO?! I weep... If you're looking for a heartwarming story about love and romance, this isn't it. In fact, it's almost the exact opposite—but it's one helluva tale. Apparently, China celebrates "Singles' Day" on Nov. 11 (a date chosen because of the four lonely 1's in 11/11), when the singles try to woo a special someone in their life. One Guangzhou resident thought it would be perfect to propose to his girlfriend right before the big holiday. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like she was on board. Attempting to have an elaborate (we guess?) and definitely expensive set-up to pop the big question, the young programmer's marriage proposal included 99 (!) iPhones 6's placed on the ground and arranged in the shape of a heart. So romantic, right?! Well, she said NO! Yep, not only is this guy now suffering from a broken heart, but he seriously broke the bank for this proposal. The arrangement, as reported by The Nanfang , cost the young man two years' worth of his salary (about $82,000). Ouch! While buying 99 iPhones seems extravagant, Nanfang reports that residents purchase huge diamonds and even brand new cars for their special someone on Single's Day. There's no word on what this young man will do with his surplus of smartphones—Will he return them all? Will he try to sell them and make a profit? Will he turn them all on and surround himself with the company of 99 Siris? LOL. http://gistscrib.com/wtf-guy-uses-99-iphone-6-to-propose-and-got-a-resounding-no/ |
Science/Technology / Google Raising Money To Fight Ebola, Would Match Donations 2 To 1 by Leadn(m): 7:06am On Nov 11, 2014 |
Google launched a campaign Monday to raise money to fight Ebola, tossing $10 (roughly Rs. 61 crores) million into the pot and saying it will match donations to the fund two to one. In addition, Google chief executive and co- founder Larry Page said his family's foundation is contributing $15 million (roughly Rs. 92 crores) to the cause. "Our hearts go out to everyone whose lives have been touched by this tragedy," Page said in a blog post announcing the campaign. Google started collecting contributions at the website , where a message indicated that the two-for-one dollar match would continue until $7.5 million (roughly Rs. 46 crores) more in donations were collected. Groups targeted by the California-based Internet titan to receive support included InSTEDD, Medecins Sans Frontieres, NetHope, and Save the Children. The campaign comes less than a month after Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife announced they were donating $25 million (roughly Rs. 150 crores) to help US efforts to contain the deadly Ebola epidemic. "The Ebola epidemic is at a critical turning point... It is spreading very quickly and projections suggest it could infect one million people or more over the next several months if not addressed," Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page. "We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn't spread further and become a long-term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio." He said he and his wife Priscilla were donating the funds to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Foundation. "Grants like this directly help the frontline responders in their heroic work," Zuckerberg said. "These people are on the ground setting up care centers, training local staff, identifying Ebola cases and much more." The Ebola virus has already killed more than 4,800 people, most in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Underfunded health systems in the region have been crippled by the disease, which has spiraled out of control and infected more than 13,000 people. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in September pledged $50 million (roughly Rs. 300 crores) to help boost the fight against the Ebola outbreak, providing the funds to UN agencies and international organizations involved in the outbreak. http://m.ndtv.com/article/gadgets/google-raising-money-to-fight-ebola-will-match-donations-two-to-one-619130 |

Science/Technology / Academias Receive $3million Each For Breakthrough In Science, Maths by Leadn(m): 8:10am On Nov 10, 2014 |
We are used to hearing of huge financial rewards for Beauty pageants winners, Nobel award winners, but Academic award holders? Not really, but that changed yesterday, Sunday for recipients of a record 12 Breakthrough Prizes. The thoughts for an award for academias started two-years ago by Yuri Milner - a Russian Billionaire Venture capitalist, co-ed by Mark Zuckerberg - Facebook founder, Sergey Brin - Google Co-founder and other tech industry luminaries. Each prize is worth $3 million, almost three times the cash a Nobel Prize winner receives. This year is the first to honor mathematicians. Five won for work ranging from algebraic geometry to analytic number theory. In the future, just one prize per year will go to a mathematician, organizers say; the large number Sunday celebrates the inaugural year for math. Six prizes went to researchers in life sciences for discoveries in areas ranging from bacterial immunity to genetic regulation. The physics prize went to a group that showed the expansion of the universe was accelerating, not slowing as previously assumed. The prizes' funders aim to generate a sense of excitement around scientific accomplishment, Milner said in an interview. "We are trying to use all means available, including money, to get the message across," he said. Milner, a onetime physics PhD student in Moscow who dropped out to move to the United States in 1990, has backed some of the world's biggest technology companies, including Facebook. Organizers also threw some Hollywood razzle-dazzle into the mix. Sunday's award ceremony was hosted by Seth MacFarlane, creator of the hit TV series "Family Guy." Presenters included actresses Kate Beckinsale and Cameron Diaz, along with actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Hamm and Eddie Redmayne. Science could use the marketing, with portrayals of nerdy science types rife in movies and television. Milner contrasted that with the situation 50 years ago, when scientist Albert Einstein was a household name. "If you look at the list of celebrities now, you could probably not find a single scientist in the list of the top 200," he said. A self-proclaimed science fanatic, Milner keeps up with developments in the field by reading stacks of science magazines. "It's my only hobby," he said. http://www.techiedup.com/2014/11/academias-receive-3million-each-for-breakthrough-in-science-maths/ 1 Like |

Science/Technology / Happy 7th Birthday Android OS by Leadn(m): 2:28pm On Nov 05, 2014 |
Today November 5th is regarded as Google’s mobile OS – Android’s birthday. November 5th saw the first working beta of Android OS outted, and HTC Dream (T-mobile G1) being the phone first which ran on the OS, but that was 10 months after Android OS beta was released. Confusingly, Android OS history doesn’t have a specific name for the first beta release, some folks naming it “Astro Boy”, “Bender”, and even… “R2-D2″. We Celebrate You As You Turn 7, Dearest Android… Android OS is 7 and that is all that matters. The most popular operating system powering 85 out of every 100 smartphones sold last quarter is 7 and that is a hectic milestone!. Android OS has seen popular versions of the software evolve and get even better. From the Ice-Cream Sandwich, JellyBeans, Kitkats and now the most talked about Lollipop 5.0 OS coming to prove that the Android OS reign is supreme. Here’s to wishing the best mobile OS more years and better upgrades. http://www.techiedup.com/2014/11/oh-happy-7th-birthday-dearest-android-os/ |
