6. DON’T explain any situation that is normal. There have been a lot of questions about just how effectively SOP affect your application. Now there is a significant difference between a statement of purpose and a letter of intent/explanation. A statement of purpose is usually geared towards your school admission application, mostly likely Masters and PhD courses, where you explain whey you want to be admitted to the particular course. Then there is also "an essay" is usually written for the same purpose though for an undergraduate admission. When it comes to your visa application, you are meant to explain any supplementary information on your letter of intent/explanation, not necessary a Statement of Purpose. The VOs are more concerned about your eligibility to be in Canada than your eligibility to study a particular course. They are in the business of border control not admission. If you have a normal visa application case, say a 24 year old Petroleum Engineering graduate applying a year after graduation for Masters in Oil and Gas engineering then you have nothing to explain. Similarly, a 22 year old applying for a BSc. has nothing to explain because that person is still very much within the normal age for University education. Letter of Explanation actually is the least important documents in your visa application, if everything else is in place. If you have any lapses or inadequacies in your application, a LOE or SOP if you like will do nothing to improve your case, in some instances it might make your application look dubious eg. someone that already has a Masters in Banking, going for a certificate course in photography and using a SOP/LOE to explain why he loves photography, in most cases WILL come out as fraudulent even if the applicant genuine intentions. Focus on presenting a sensible, logical, neat and simple application with the appropriate documents and leave the LOE or SOP for only when you have a special situation you need to explain. USE SOP or LOE when you have something relevant to say that can influence you application. Let your story be sensible!
7. DON’T misrepresent in your application. Misrepresentation ends in a refusal 10 out of 10 times. Misrepresentation can mean lying and lying a lie that is easily detected. For instance if you say you are a married man and at the same time say you have no dependants on your application; because of your finances, that’s an obvious lie. VOs know that most men provide the income for their family so that as simple as it is can end up in a refusal, if you have 3 kids state it and make sure you have the finances in your account to show that you can look after them. If you have been to any country, be very sure to state it in your application. VOs trust liquid cash more than assets. Assets are only an advantage when proving ties to home not as a means to financial resource. If you have been refused a visa, be sure again to indicate it on your application. If you must lie, which is not advisable, your lie/s must be impossible to peel apart and with solid documents to back up.
8. DO factor in time when applying for your visa. There has been a lot of questions about whether or not online applications are faster than paper applications and the answer is quite obvious. Online applications are processed faster because obviously all the VO has to do is sit in front of a computer to review yours application. There are no transit times between VFS and Ghana, whereas on paper applications your documents have to be physically couriered to the embassy which is in Ghana I believe, that obviously again takes a specified time, maybe one, two or three days depending on the backlog. Now while online applications are PROCESSED faster, that doesn’t necessarily mean someone who applied online would always get their visa faster than someone who applied via paper because every case is individual and different. The earlier you apply, the better. Don’t do last minute submission because processing time varies and if you get your visa late, you would have issues at the point of entry in Canada.
9. DO consider passport validity rules. You will not be issued a visa passed the validity of your passport, so keep that in mind. If you are doing a two year course and your visa expires in a year, you’ll be given likely a 9 month visa that must be extended when you get a new passport. The Nigerian consulate is in Ottawa, and it is possible to get a new passport there for about $120 CDN. However when extending your permit, you’ll need bank statements and paperwork from your school.
10. DO reapply. If for any reason you were refused, calmly look through the lapses on your application and requested for more information regarding your case. Use that information to rebuild your application and confidently reapply; be sure not to come off as desperate. Your second approach should correct any misjudgements made concerning you. VOs are human beings and human beings are influenced by their personal experiences and such. Your second application will most certainly be reviewed by a different person and if you do your diligence you have a chance at getting your visa.
Frankrobbn1: I will prefer using a table of contents in fixing the above financial expenses into proper documentation. It makes the work neat and very easy for the reader to comprehend. On the other hand, you can as well list out the financial provisions that you have attached with your application. For instance:
My personal savings bank statement at MICRO FINANCE BANK of Nigeria with closing balance of ₦289,635.20 which is equivalent to CAD$ 1,032.68. Etc.... Go on and on to list out all the financial support you have.
The entire cost of my studies at the Queen's University Ontario, Canada:
Tuition - 15000CAD Room and Board-10000CAD (Others)-2000CAD miscellaneous - 3,000CAD
Total funds available for my stay: ?CAD
I hope you understand? Feel free to ask questions anytime.
domex007: when i applied for canada visa back in 2016 with my US sponsor. He sent his bank statement via email
other documents: Bank statements Proof of relationship employment letter and tax documents if he has a business, Proof of business ownership and business tax documents an official addressed to the canadian embassy stating that he is responsible for your studies in canada
i hope this helps. GOOD LUCK
Thanks, but what are the documents that proofs our relationship?
I am presently applying for full tuition scholarship at Quest University.
Please help me cross-check my answers and see if I'm good to submit.
I have other people who will support my education if eventually things work well, is it my parent's details I should enter or that of people who has better financial history?
I also need to know how much I need to apply for a permit if I should get the free tuition scholarship. School name is Quest University. Thanks.
Uzzy785: Hi. I am going for a masters in health services administration at Tulane University SPHTM. This place is truly a gold mine and I learnt so much here. I got approved on 27th of sept in abj. Just picked up my passport today. I felt I should give back to the community. There is a lot of background story to this interview but for the sake of brevity i will just go straight to my interview. This was my 2nd attempt.
V.O, good morning
Me, good morning
V.O, where are you going to
Me, Tulane university in new orleans for a masters in health services administration otherwise known as health care management
V.O, how did you hear about the school
Me, when i first made up my mind that i wanted a masters, i went to google and searched for top 20 schools of public health in USA, then i bagan checking each school on their official website. Tulane ranked 12th on the US news and world reports and also My supervisor mentioned the school as one at the forefront on research on tropical diseases which is important to Nigeria...V.O, i will stop you right there.
V.O, why now when you do not have enough medical experience
Me, Not at all, I have been a medical doctor for over 3 yrs now (told her all i have done since graduation till now, all the things on my DS160). V.O, I will stop you right there, so why now?
Me, Based on this experience, i have witnessed a lot of heart shattering things such as people not being able to afford drugs, doctors and healthworkers going on strike, people dying of preventable diseases. Most burdersome is how crippled the country is when we have epidemics. We have manpower and appreciable material resources, what we lack is good administration, planning and execution on how to generate an output that covers the health issues of all Nigerians. This is why i am going to the US to gain such transferable skills. I also have plans of owning my own hospital in Nigeria in the next 6yrs and I need this training to be able to run it efficiently and effectively with aims of giving affordable and accessible health care to my people...VO...i will stop you right there.
V.O, who is sponsoring this
Me, My uncle and i mentioned his name
V.O, can i see a statement
Me, yes, here you go
VO, what does he do
Me, told her
V.O, why is he doing this.
Me, he has always been supportive of my academic pursuits and wants me to be an instrument of positive change in the healthsector of this country
V.O looks at me seriously then says...do you agree to take full responsibility of this document if its found to be fake, this will cost you a 10yrs ban
Me, Yes, its authentic.
V.O, Ok, you have been approved...then the famous temporary deafness started....you will need this i20 at the port of entry... Me, come again...repeats herself. Your passport will be available so so date, Me, pls come again....VO repeats herself....VO, you wont be able to enter the US 30 days before start of school so the earliest date for you to enter the US is so so date...Me, pls come again...VO, repeats herself. Are you clear with all i have said? Me, yes
V.O, picks up the white paper and hands it over to me, do have a nice day. Me, and you too.
Few tips that i can give based on my experience.
1st believe in yourself, sounds cliche right but its tested and trusted. My 1st interview, i met the infamous african american woman and honestly it was not pleasant atall. So if you know within you that you did the whole process yourself, had all your documents intact like i did and the only issue was the interview, do try again.
I am single, in my twenties and have not travelled before. So do not let that bother you so much.
Avoid agents pls. Avoid agents pls. They can be soo wicked. Do everything yourself. Come here for information
Pls be confident, its necessary...there was this guy shouting ontop of his voice thinking it was projecting confidence but we listening could hear the anxiety in every syllable what more the V.O. He was denied. Pls practice well before hand.
I have always been confident about my abilities. GPA 3.6/4 (Wes evaluated). GRE total 310. Applied kindda late to 8 schools was admitted into 7. Two gave me partial scholarships. So i was pretty confident. After the 1st denial, i was truly humbled but i am a resilient fellow. I hardly give up. I found God again...lol, sounds funny but its true. I prayed harder than I did before the 1st interview. I had to trust God this time and it worked.
Listen to motivationals, they helped me alot. I went on youtube, saw a lot. I discovered TD Jakes. What a gifted speaker. It will help you get over the few days depression and push you on.
I had to also contact ppl here to help me. Some answered, some didnt and i understand. People are busy with school, work and all but for a shy guy like me who likes to keep my business my business, i dreaded putting up my enquiries so i contacted the ones i noticed gave enlightening responses with a touch of humanity and who were willing to help others. Few answered, most didnt. So go with the ones that replied you.
Pls during the interview, learn to talk, express yourself. Do not be rigid. A lady i observed who was laughing with the consular officer and smiling through out got hers. I had to learn to smile like those beauty pagent models. My first interview was corrupted with the mantra of dont talk if not spoken to, do not answer what you were not asked...so i was a one word answering machine..yes, no...i did not even expatiate on questions and there was this long period when she was just typing on end, i was expecting more questions but none came afterwords because i read here how brief one had to be, anyways the point is pls by all means express yourself fully. When you notice them typing for long, present your case again, talk about the school, ask for opinion on the city you intend to go to school, say your future plans for Nigeria. Dont just keep mute. Let the V.O be the one to say 'stop'
I want to thank Promise, God bless you. Also Ubah, thank you...your candid advice helped. Lastly to everyone who posted here, thanks. I started from group 9 to this current group. Its long, I am sorry but I hope this helps someone who genuinely wants to better himself or herself positively. Like i said, i am not inclined to put up things here but if you have questions, feel free to reach out and i will try and answer your emails. Pls be patient with me as i am a doctor with really busy hrs. Never, ever give up. God bless you all.
sheke01: Lemme try to help you the best way I can. Am currently doing a masters degree in Information systems at Cleveland state university and it would be wonderful to have a Nigerian too in the department
First, How did you hear about this school? If you say your Dad's friend/alumni, it better be true. If they ask you for his name and you go blank. Remember they have a database and can run instant search. You are better off saying you knew about the school after doing online searches than for you to be caught lying.
Secondly, Why Cleveland State University for a business seeking degree and not top schools. Remove your mind from the bolded. You are going for an IT degree and not really a business degree. Even though Cleveland state university houses this program under their business school, the other school I applied to housed the same program under their Library science faulty, Engineering Faculty, Computer Science faculty etc. I just get to have a MBA upon graduation though. lol Nevertheless, you response to this question was too generic. Most schools in the US have good and quality professors. I guess the other schools you applied to would have good professors too. If you must talk about good professors then you would need to name one or two professors and highlight their achievements. Also you said something about "well equipped with appliances that would help me not to only gain theorical knowledge, but practical knowledge as well". This is way too generic. Try to talk specific appliances/laboratory equipments like "access to new generation graphic processor units for brute force attack simulations, cloud computing infrastructures etc. Dude, Look for more examples. Then try to remove the location of downtown Cleveland as a determinant for you choosing the schools. Downtown of a city might not be the most conducive environment for learning. You don't want to institute an element of doubt in the VO
Thirdly, your response to "Why Information systems and What this degree would do for you is not really top notch. To me both questions are similar and the same answer would suffice for both. Try to relate the answers to the knowledge you gained on your computer and hardware engineering apprenticeship. This is really your strongest point and it would be in your best interest to talk about it at every slight opportunity. Talk about how this degree would improve upon the knowledge you gained back then and also give you knew skill sets (you will talk about specific skill sets here too o). Then you can finish work with how you would return back to Nigeria to apply all this knowledge on big IT firms like Interswitch, google, Andela, Cisco etc.
You can also view my visa transcript incase you need further help
Do all this and I might be welcoming you with a big hug to Cleveland in January. You go just bring two paint of garri and egusi for me. You know as e dey be na.
Please, can I pm you Sir? I just read your transcript, it is really a lovely, and brilliant one.

Thank you very much Sir, i really appreciate your corrections sir, I will correct every mistake pointed, and upload it here shortly.
100kobo: @EZEIGBO has done a thorough analysis of your transcript, what more can I say. However, as an observer, I feel you copied those responses here and there. They were rather generic and lengthy.
Beauty lies in simplicity. Keep it brief and personified. Candidates tend to believe that longer answers make the best sound to the VO. On the contrary, the longer your response, the more you open up yourself for more scathing questions. Don't try to "wowww" the VO. Your job is to go there and run away with your visa approval. Therefore, keep it short and simple.
Again, and most importantly, it is good to study interview templates, but you must own your answers and not regurgitate coded scripts. VOs are trained to identify scripted answers and it will be at their discretion to approve or disapprove you upon that discovery. Be conversational and relaxed. Brevity is key.
The Bolded is wrong, I agree the answer to "Why US" might be similar to what others produced, but other response can't be found anywhere else, but my deep down mind, and knowledge.
I really appreciate your input, and I am correcting all faulted areas!
Me: Good Morning VO: Good Morning, Pass me your passport and i-20 ME: I did sharply VO: why going to the US Me: I am going to Cleveland Land State University for my BSC in Information Sysystem
Thanks Ma [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s] VO: Why US? Me: It's a known fact that a degree in the United State is well respected and highly ranked, therefore, I see a foundational degree in the US to be a very good decision.
Not so great an answer, as the VO probably knows that not everywhere in the US is this same, so a more city specific answer is preferred. So something along the lines of US being the center of innovation, and your school known for its prowess in robotics (like CMU Pittsburgh), would suffice, nothing too long and cheesy, so as not to put the VO Off grin
Oh, I must commend you Ma; That's completely true. Thanks a lot [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s]
VO: how did you get to know about the school? ME: My Dad's friend who is an alumni of the school recommended it to me, and as a result of this. I went online to read more on the school curriculum, Standard, program offered and it's notable alumnus.
Remove Dad's friend and stick to plain old alumni, and possible how successful this alumni is, that makes you think they you'll tow his path of success if you receive the best training he did at the school.
VO: How many Schools did you apply to? ME: 4 VO: Name them ME: Cleveland State University, Georgia State University, Washington and Lee University, Appalachian State University. VO: How many admitted you? ME: Cleveland State University, and Georgia State University.
Hopefully this is true, don't make up schools to look good grin grin
Yes I did Ma, infact, I applied to upto 8 , but didn't complete the application process, since I got admitted into the one I got my eye on. [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s]
VO: Why Cleveland State University for a business seeking degree and not top schools. Me: Cleveland state University at the Monte Ahuja Campus is well equipped with appliances that would help me not to only gain theorical knowledge, but practical knowledge as well, thereby developing me Managarially, Financially, and Technically, which will prepare me with the best way to utilize the modern technology. Secondly, the school is enriched with qualified professors who are always ready to render necessary assistance to students. In addition, the school is located downtown of Ohio city, which will give me the opportunity to learn in a very conducive environment.
I thought you were going for information systems
Yes Ma, I will be issued a B.BA Certificate Ma. That was the reason I referred to it as Business Seeking Degree. [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s] 100kobo, is there anything that's not necessary, and you think I should delete off? [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s]
VO: so, why Information Systems ME: Considering the continuous shortage of individuals with the combination of business and technology skills needed to develop and manage the economic systems that provide competitive advantage in the global marketplace, and varieties of career opportunities information system offers, coupled with the knowledge which I already had during my apprenticeship, I am sure this program will enrich me with the necessary skills needed to excel, and provide solution to the economic situation of Nigeria, and and enhance my father's land Technologically.
Toooooo Long !!! Tooooooo Long!!!../even american high school leavers would never be this articulate, keep it short and simple, data analytics have blown up in recent times, block Chain, AI, and data science are the forefront of IT, and your degree would expedite your training in this blissful field.. Shikena!! grin grin
Thanks a lot ma, I will shorten it, and make use of all suggestion made by you, and other contributors. [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s]
VO: What will this degree do for you? ME: This degree will develop me Managerially and Technically, which will make me more valuable in the labor market, when I return to Nigeria to work with some Telecommunication companies like MTN, GLO, Etisalat, and any other Technological business enterprise.
Ermmmmm... Not so great either, this degree would do what degrees do, and that is give you immense knowledge, and hone your ability to learn , innovate and be articulate, so keep your answer short and simple, and leave out companies, because when these companies die, you'd still want a job someplace grin grin.. So instead talk about the new skills you'd get, and the disruptive tech (Data science etc) that this degree would bestow upon you grin
Hmm, never would have thought of this, Thanks a lot Ma [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s] VO: What have you been doing since then? ME: After my high school, I went for an apprenticeship in Computer and hardware engineering, which was for 12 months, with six months serving period making 18 months. After this, I proceeded as an apprentice to gain knowledge on MS word, Software installation, Ethernet Connectivity and GSM architecture for total of 12 Months.
Too much information, a simple "... I underwent vocational training at a technical institute for Computer engineering, and Networking, and have obtained a practicing technical license, which I work with, is more than enough"
lol, I guess I like to talk too much, but Thank God for letting you caution me, I will stick to your corrections ma. [s].....................................................................[/s] [s].....................................................................[/s]
VO: Why is he spending that huge amount on you? Me: He's my guildian, who is always interested in my success, and am seen as an investment who will use my attained knowledge to promote his company enthusiastically.
No No No No.. This VO's already understand our communal lifestyle, so all this cheesy story may be a turn off.. Here it takes a village to raise a child, the village has raised tour uncle, and now its time for your uncle to give back, more so, if his kids are grown and he has no core responsibilities cheesy
Thanks Ma, My Uncle and my Dad shares a landed inheritance (Poultry Farm) from my Grand mother, who gave birth for two men, and presently; my uncle is the one occupying the land, since my Dad doesn't have interest in farming, and now the man sees sponsoring me as an opportunity to pay my Dad back. Do you think I should tell this long story, and family history to the VO, as I talk too much?
GboyegaD: Based on your interview, your response to why US seems generic and that line seems used too frequently. You might want to address it from the exposure it affords you and also, how most Nigerian corporations would appreciate such a degree.
Alright Sir, Thanks a lot, I will definitely correct it Sir.
TheZed: According to your transcript, your visa was approved. A date and location for the collection of your passport should be on the white paper given to you.
In Jesus Name, I say Amen. Thanks for this positive thinking.
Hi everyone, please, now that I will be resuming for spring semester; am I going to offer courses under the spring starting from January? or the one under Fall?
Am just confused, because I believe the courses in fall will introduce me to what i will offer in spring semester?

What's your study plan: This program consists of 15 credit hour for the 1st semester, and 14 credit hours for the second semester, and some of the courses I will be offering includes: Eng1101 (English Composition1), Math1111 (College Algebra), EcO2105 (Principal of micro economics), and BUSA 2106 (Legal environment of business).etc.
And for the second semester: MATH1070 (Elementary Statistics), ENG1102 (English Composition 2), ECO2106 (Principal of micro economics).
femi312: Where did you get the info in bold? I believe this is not true except the laws have change which I doubt. As an international student you cant work off campus whether it relates to your course or not. You can only work off-campus if you apply for CPT (summer) which is after 1year of full study or if you file for economic hardship. At no point must you be found working off-campus if its not any of the cases above
Spotlighte: Sure. Just download the uber app and follow the instructions.
If you have bargaining power, opt for the union taxis. It's just that they have static prices and it might be hard bearing down the cab fare. For example, they charge 3k from the airport to Sauka while you get to pay N670 on uber. You get my point, yes?
I woke up this morning, and this song kept on ringing in my heart, it was difficult for me to just let it go, so, I decided to search online, play the tone, and read a little about the song.
Frank Graeff went through some very difficult trials. The period before writing this song was one of great despondency, doubt and physical pain. When he turned to God’s Word, 1 Peter 5:7 gave wonderful comfort: “He cares for you.” After meditating on that truth, Graeff wrote these lyrics, with the resounding affirmation in the chorus, “O yes, He cares…”
This hymn is a great comfort to those who are going through trials in life. Take heart that we have a loving, compassionate saviour who cares every bit for us – The Lord Jesus Christ.
Here's the lyrics:
Does Jesus care when my heart is pained Too deeply for mirth and song As the burdens press, and the cares distress, And the way grows weary and long?
Refrain: O yes, He cares I know He cares! His heart is touched with my grief When the days are weary, the long nights dreary, I know my Saviour cares
Does Jesus care when my way is dark With a nameless dread and fear? As the daylight fades into deep night shades, Does He care enough to be near?
Does Jesus care when I’ve tried and failed To resist some temptation strong When for my deep grief I find no relief Tho my tears flow all the night long?
Does Jesus care when I’ve said goodbye To the dearest on earth to me And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks Is it aught to Him? does He see?
Spotlighte: The good thing with Abuja is that there is no traffic like you see in Lagos, so really you can get to anywhere you want to in good time if you prepare well.
If you can avoid those taxis in unions, please do. They'll only milk you dry. Try getting a cab on uber.
Thanks, is there a place I could request for cab or uber?
