RealityShot:Hi, Talking about topping up SIBTC MMF, I also thought of topping up this morning but I realized, there has been a steady downward trend in the interest rates. Joined last year when it was 18% but its now about 15% which no longer looking as attractive as it earlier was. For additional funds for topup, I am considering other options such as Balanced Funds (higher risk appetite but might be worth it in the end). Guys, what's your take on the MMF rates decline, is it seasonal and will pick up later or its totally unpredictable? |
irondome:Although as you have stated, the employer's reference letter & other docs are submitted at point of application after ITA, but isn't the CRS points calculated before ITA? This seems to mean your CRS points (work experience points inclusive) would have been calculated even before the back-up documents are submitted after ITA. Hope you understand my point of view? Please clarify. |
irondome:@Irondome, Based on the bolded above as quoted from your earlier post, at what point do you present the letter of reference from your employer to back up your work experience claim? Does it mean someone can't claim points for work experience without this reference letter? Kindly throw more light. |
leo1234:From their website, they seem to have offices only in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and PH. As a result, I think you can only take your bank draft to any of these offices (although, personally I have not heard of anyone do it outside Lagos). Since you are based out of Lagos, you can contact someone in Lagos to buy the bank draft and take to British Council office on your behalf, maybe with other docs such as photocopy of your passport datapage. (You do not have to make the payment yourself). Hope this helps. |
WhyNa:Yes WhyNa, Its the Bank Draft you will take to British Council where you'll be given your receipts. That was a mistake while typing. Thanks. |
irondome:Spot on. Thanks bro. Also, can you confirm the "document by document" WES evaluation is good to go in this case since its for Immigration and not study purpose. I asked because that should cost 150 canadian dollars (which is equivalent to less than 30k naira), but I read earlier in the thread that some pay as much as 50k naira for the evaluation so I'm at a loss as to why. Im I missing something? |
lusen:Unfortunately, you cannot pay online again once you get past that page (without a successful payment) Your best bet to complete that registration is payment using bank draft. Go to any bank and pay for a bank draft for 40k in favour of "British Council". Take the receipt/teller from the bank to British Council office and make your payment. Shortly after, your application status will be updated and confirmed. |
zandora:Hi Zandora, Quite appreciate your insightful inputs to the numerous queries. However, need clarification on the bolded from your response above. I have a BSc from Nigeria (5 yrs) and an MSc from UK (1 yr). Obviously, the UK MSc is the highest degree, which I have checked to be an equivalent of Canadian Masters. Am I correct by saying, your advice is just to evaluate (using WES) only the Masters degree and not necessarily the BSc from Naija uni in my case? Would evaluating both degrees not enhance my points and enable me stand a better chance? Lastly, on average from those who have done this WES evaluation, how long does the process take for Universities in Nigeria and for UK Uni's? |
damkollins:Kindly please help with the preparatory materials for IELTS General Training Syllabus. Email is learned0007@gmail.com Thanks for the assistance. |
chillex8:@Chillex8, thanks for the added enlightenment. Another sure way to know the odometer unit, Im sure quite a number of people like myself never took notice of those details. |
Just thought I share this with you guys. I have been car hunting for a while just to ensure I get the perfect toks deal - clean title (non-accidented), low mileage (less than 100k miles)& full options. Finally, I saw the dream car and decided to go for it, it had all I wanted apart from one thing - had relatively high mileage (about 142K miles). Since it was very neat I decided to still go for it regardless. After driving the car for about a week, I decided to play with the Odometer/Trip mileage readings for a specific distance (home to work) in order to determine the fuel consumption of my new ride. I discovered the normal distance of 20 miles read 32 miles on this car. I began to wonder if there was a problem with the Odometer/trip calculator. The shocker - After investigating, I realised from AutoCheck's VIN History that the car originated from Canada and as a result had metric instrumentation rather than imperial. What I mean is the Odometer was measured in kilometers (Canadian cars) rather than miles (for US cars). In essence, I discovered the high mileage (142k) which I was initially unhappy about was actually 142,000 km which is equivalent to approx 88,000miles meaning I had a perfect deal afterall. Lesson - When next you go Tokunbo car shopping, find out if its a Canadian car with odometer reading in kilometers so as not to loose out on a good car with the assumption it has a high mileage. Unfortunately, Autocheck & Carfax just states the mileage without the unit of measurement(km or miles) so you cannot really tell from the report. Even some car dealers are ignorant of this fact because the dealer I bought from also thought the car actually had high mileage. Hopes this info helps someone. ![]() NB - This information only applies to those concerned about the mileage of their cars before purchase. |

CityNG: I don't do well suggesting cars to others. Thanks for your response. Regarding the bolded above in your post, seems you missed this bolded part of my earlier post below. learned0007: Chief, the keyword in most post is "prefer". nurey: Mr CityNG I know you are doing a lot of good here with your knowledge but if I am not wrong the op needs a car with high ground clearance hence his choice of words 4WD.@Nurey, It is very clear that "higher ground clearance" concept is totally different from "4WD". Hence you have some SUV/CUVs (which already have high ground clearance) with FWD while others have 4WD or AWD and a choice can be made depending on your peculiar requirements. As for the explanation about 4WD, Real time 4WD, AWD, 2WD/FWD, etc. I think "google" can do a fantastic job on that. @all, the OP appreciates all your diverse and intelligent responses ![]() |
CityNG: I see.Chief, the keyword in most post is "prefer". Definitely, 2WD can also function in the area, but I'm just naturally inclined towards a 4WD for that kind of terrain. Thanks for your input though cos I realize you agree that a vehicle with higher ground clearance (SUVs & Crossovers) is ideal for nigerian roads but 4WD is not necessary except extreme cases. |
CityNG: Still waiting on OP.I am actually not a surveryor. Reason I prefer a 4WD is because of the area I commute daily, the roads are not tarred and can be very rough especially during the rainy season. |
adanny01: Even though the price is catching up rwally fast, i cant say the same of their quality.I quite agree with you, although if you look at reviews on cars websites in the US & on youtube, experts are really beginning to appreciate quality of Korean cars. Hopefully, in a couple of years, the reliability difference would be very thin. |
Hi Guys, I deliberately resuscitated this post even though it is over 3 years old. This is because part of the reasons some people supported a new KIA Cerato over Toks Japanese cars is that over time Kia would improve a lot in standard and quality and would be able to compete better with Japanese cars year for year. This is 2014 and according to carsforsale.com in the US, see average prices for these 2014 cars Kia Cerato (Forte) 2014 is about $18,500, Hyundai Elantra 2014 is about 19,500, Toyota Corolla 2014 is about $19,500. Honda Civic 2014 is about $20,500 Based on this, I wouldn't call a Kia Cerato or Hyundai Elantra cheap Korean cars anymore as they are all in the same range. The question now is 1. Has the quality of Kia really improved such that in terms of price it is in the same range with Japanese cars 2. Shouldn't we start changing our perception of Kia cars as being very cheap and unreliable thereby having very low 2nd hand resale value? In essence, if we should answer the OPs question now in 2014, would we all still give the same responses we gave in 2009 when the thread was opened. Over to you guys, kindly make your comments. cc - Connoisseur, Siena, chelseabmw, jpphilips, ambyzown, akinalabi, GAZZUZZ ,BlueDiva etc |
nurey: A car is only as good as the owner in terms of maintenance and reliability. All cars have issues or can develop issues at anytime. Look at this cars choose the one you admire and would like people to see you drive. Waiting for peoples review will only confuse you cause all the cars you mentioned lots of people on nairaland have a positive and negative first hand experience.Honestly appreciate your input, I was assuming some kind of opinion pool would give a "majority carrying the vote" choice. Besides, while all cars have their peculiar problems, I want to believe some are more problematic and less reliable than other regardless of owner regular maintenance. |
Hello Guys, I am at crossroads and I need some advise here. I intend buying a tokunbo 4WD mid-size SUV / Crossover but I am yet to decide. My budget is between 2.5 $ 2.8 million naira and the major factors that will determine my choice are - reliability & fuel efficiency. A 4 cylinder would be ideal but a V6 can also be considered. I know there are several options (Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4, Hyundai Tucson/ix35, Nissan Xtrail/Rogue, Kia Spotage etc) but I would prefer suggestions based on personal experience on model type and year that has served you well. I have read a lot of reviews online but they all point to the fact that even new cars can have issues anytime which makes it difficult to decide on which to buy. Over to you.... any suggestions with reasons would be appreciated. |
