AGGRIEVED APC MEMBERS PETITION CHAIRMAN CARETAKER COMMITTEE IN PROTEST AGAINST CHIEF SYLVA
...AS CRISIS ROCKS PARTY OVER BAYELSA SENATORIAL BYE ELECTIONS

The Bayelsa State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress has erupted in crisis barely two months month to the two senatorial bye elections scheduled scheduled for October 31, 2020.

Some aggrieved leaders of the APC from Bayelsa Central and Bayelsa West Senatorial Districts have forwarded a petition to the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the party against the conduct of the state’s party leader, Chief Timipre Syva.

The leaders who belong to the APC Constitutional and Due Process Vanguard òf the State chapter include Hon Godwin Sidi, Hon Dressman, Frank Oputu,(Bayelsa Central), Hon Peter Ozobo, Ebide Brown and Moses Hitler from Bayelsa West.

The aggrieved APC members who wrote the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman through their lawyer, Mr. Rueben Egwaba and Co, accused that the leader of the party, Chief Timipre Sylva and his supporters of a plot to impose candidates on the party without consultations.

The group, in the letter, called on the Caretaker Committee Chairman to stop Sylva and a few others from imposing candidates of their choice on the party to avert what they described an impending disaster against the party in the bye elections.

They alleged that Sylva who is neither from Bayelsa Central nor West where the senatorial bye elections are scheduled to take place is working to impose candidates who recently defected to the APC from the PDP and have not even spent the requisite number of days to qualify them for nomination for elective positions.

They alleged that Sylva Style of leadership especially his decision to work with a few members of the State Executive Committee and select only his cronies from his senatorial district for the few slots of federal appointments was responsible for his difference with Senator Heineken Lokpobiri and others which have factionalized the party in the state.

They stressed further that while the lingering disagreements have not been resolved, Sylva who is not from the two senatorial districts is working to impose candidates of his choice on the party without consulting leaders and stakeholders from the affected area.

The aggrieved APC members warned that the tendency to impose those who recently defected to the party when the party’s aborted victory in the gubernatorial election was already in sight to the exclusion of committed loyalists who had served the party with dedication would be counter productive.

They said further that the candidates being promoted by Chief Sylva and his group were unpopular and would weaken the party’s chances at the poll.

The group also urged the Caretaker Committee Chairman to take urgent steps to intervene in the plot by Sylva to impose a former Deputy Governor of State, Chief Peremobowei Ebebi, from Ekeremor local Government Area as the Party’s candidate for Bayelsa West in violation of an existing agreement on zoning in the district irrespective of party affiliation.

According to them, violation of the long standing agreement between Ekeremor and Sagbama to share the senatorial slot and the House òf Representative seat, would not be in the interest of the APC.

They stressed that fielding a candidate from Ekeremor as the party’s candidate for the Senatorial election when an Ekeremor man, Hon Fred Agbedi, occupies the House òf Reps seat would put the party in a difficult situation.

They said that the Bayelsa Central Senatorial has the same complaints about sidelining critical and long standing members in favor of defectors from the PDP.

The group which threatened legal action against the planned willful imposition of candidates, alleged that “the Sylva loyalists are bent on pushing this provocation through fraudulent primaries where figure will just be collated and allocated to people.”

The National Screening Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party for the bye-elections in the Central and West Senatorial Districts of Bayelsa State has disqualified four aspirants over alleged irregular tax clearance, membership dues, anomalies in documentations, among other issues.

Those stopped from contesting the two vacant senatorial seats are a former Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Gideon Ekeuwei; former Speaker and current Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, Monday-Bubou Obolo; former state chairman of the party, Charles Ambaiowei; and one Igo Goin.

It was gathered on Saturday that the national PDP panel, led by Muraina Ajibola, received nomination forms from six senatorial aspirants with only one for the Bayelsa West and five for the Bayelsa Central District.

But at the end of the screening exercise, the committee was said to have cleared former Governor Seriake Dickson as the only aspirant for Bayelsa West and Cleopas Moses, a former Chairman of PDP in Bayelsa, for Bayelsa Central.
The other four aspirants were said to be disqualified by the committee.

Party sources close to the panel claimed that there were over five different grounds for the purported disqualification of the four affected aspirants.
They ranged from non-possession of valid PDP membership cards, non-payment of membership dues, irregularity in names on certificates, irregularity in court affidavits to irregular payment of taxes.

According to one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, some of the disqualified aspirants hurriedly rushed to obtain their three-year tax clearance about two months ago, a development that indicated that they allegedly evaded tax payment for two years.

The source added that it was difficult for the screening panel to wave the provisions of the PDP and Nigerian Constitution on requirements for eligibility, insisting that the disqualified aspirants should blame themselves and not anyone.
“The only option available to them is to proceed to the Screening Appeal Panel to disprove the earlier report of the screening,” the source said.

The embattled leader of Jama’atu Ahlussunnah Lid Da’awati Wal Jihad otherwise known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has released 11 minutes audio in which he faulted the death sentencing of a man accused of blasphemy in Kano State.

Yahaya Sherif Aminu was sentenced to death by hanging in Kano State for insulting Prophet Muhammad in a song he shared on WhatsApp in March.

“We heard about something sad happening in the state where people think they are Muslims, even though they are practicing disbelief,” Shekau stated.

“A singer opened his mouth and uttered unkind words against the Prophet (PBUH). It was said he was arrested and sentenced to death by hanging.

“According to some people, he can appeal the judgement. But what brought this if the sentence is godly?”

Shekau was saying this because an upper Shari’a court judge who sentenced the singer, Alkali Aliyu Muhammad Kani, said the accused could appeal the verdict within 30 days even though he did not deny the charges.

Shekau claimed that everyone knows that all schools of Islamic jurisprudence opine that whoever insults the Prophet should not be asked to repent.

“He should just be killed. If you really sentenced him, we should only hear that you slaughtered him,” he said.

Shekau added that Kano is not an Islamic State, calling it a land of infidels where democracy is practiced.

“You are not in an Islamic State. You are in the land of infidels. The only exception among you is a weak person who holds ‘Tawhid’ (monotheism). He can’t be declared as an infidel, but he is a sinner because he didn’t migrate.”

The western lifestyle of Kano people itself, according to Abubakar Shekau, is an insult to the Prophet Muhammad.

“Before he insulted the Prophet (PBUH), your lifestyle is an insult itself. Your lifestyle is also blasphemy against the Prophet. How can you say you love someone and you slap him?”

In the audio, Shekau blasted the Kano State for practicing democracy. He said the state allows everyone to do what they like.

Referring to the people of Kano, Shekau said “just because you sit down and recite Quran after you have already done what made you unbelievers? And because you say there is no god but Allah, you think you are Muslims? We tell you, you and the one who insulted the Prophet are all the same.”

This is not the first time a death sentence was passed in Kano State. Abdulaziz Inyass who belong to the extremists in the Tijaniyya Sufi Order is still in detention after he was sentenced to death for blasphemy in 2016.

Abdulaziz was accused of saying that Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass, an influential cleric in West Africa, was ‘bigger than Prophet Muhammad.’
