Samsung has finally showcased the long-awaited sequel to its popular niche product, the Galaxy Note, and although the first iteration wasn’t exactly lacking in the hardware department, the Korean company has still managed to pack in a host of healthy upgrades. Announced over at IFA 2012 in Berlin, the Galaxy Note II’s display will be bumped to 5.5″ as expected, and although it’s only one-fifth of an inch larger in diameter to that of its predecessor, it’s still a noticeable amount of additional real-estate. Said display will be at 1280×720 resolution, so although the pixel density will be less than that of the first Galaxy Note, it will now be a true 16:9 aspect ratio. As was the case with the first Galaxy Note, the screen will be a Super AMOLED HD, and a 1.6GHz quad-core CPU will keep things ticking over quite nicely. It’ll include a healthy 2GB of RAM, and seeing as though it’ll be running Android’s latest and greatest Jelly Bean (4.1) from the get-go, there should not even be a trace of lag. The rear snapper will offer 8-megapixels, whilst the front will offer a 1.9-megapixel camera. The battery will be 3,100mAh – 600mAh up on the “smaller” Galaxy Note, and it does look as though Samsung has offered a similar transition as it did with the S II to the S III earlier this year. As well as the hardware specs, there’ll be plenty unique new perks such as Air View, which will allow users to hover the redesigned S Pen over content in order preview without opening, which certainly sounds like an intriguing implementation. The Note II will be slightly thinner than the current, measuring in at 9.4mm compared with 9.65mm, although it will be a couple of grams heavier. Depending on how much space you require, you can pick from the usual 16, 32, and 64 GB storage configurations, although the microSD expansion will allow you to bump your standards quota by a further 64GB. Meanwhile, connectivity is HSPA+ 21mbps, and there’ll be a 4G LTE model available for those whose area / carrier permits. It’ll begin shipping from October in Europe, and will be available in Marble White or Titanium Gray. No word has yet been said of the US release, although we’ll bring you that information as it arrives.

http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/07/killers-of-oshiomholes-aide-apprehended.html The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, on Wednesday said the police had arrested four suspects for the alleged murder of Olaitan Oyerinde, the former private secretary to Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole in Benin. Oyerinde, who was the Principal Private Secretary to Oshiomhole and Deputy National Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, was shot dead on May 4 in his Ogbor residence by unknown persons. President Goodluck Jonathan had ordered the IG to find the governor’s aide’s killers. Abubakar made the confirmation of the arrests while addressing newsmen in Benin shortly after addressing officers and men of the Police Zone 5 ahead of Saturday’s Edo governorship election, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. “Yes, I can confirm that the police have arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of Oyerinde and investigation is continuing,” he said. On Oshiomhole’s rejection of the police investigation report into the alleged attack on his motorcade on Auchi-Warrake Road in April, the I-G said the police had the constitutional responsibility to conduct investigations. “We have come out with our report and we stand by the report of our investigation until otherwise proven. “We were not part of the accident. We have interrogated those involved and they have given their statements to the police. “Based on their statements, the police came to the conclusion we arrived at,” he said. “Whether anybody dismisses it or not, that is not the issue. The facts available to us now inform us of what we have said, and if any body has anything contrary, he should be able to come forward to defend it. “We cannot allow people to sit down and make statements they don’t have facts about. “If you have evidence to say it was A, B, C or D, you must be ready to prove it,” he declared. On the Edo election, the IG warned men and officers of the zone not to be used by any person or group of persons to circumvent the electoral process. Abubakar said, “I have come with your allowances and will be adequately taken care of. Please do not compromise your position or be allowed to be used by any individual. “This election is a test case for us and the country and people are watching to see whether we can conduct a free, fair and credible election. “You should therefore be ready to partner with other sister security agencies during the election. You must not molest or harass a voter with the card. “You should be civil but firm as I will not tolerate report of indiscipline. If you allow yourselves to be used, you will be tried, dismissed and be made to face criminal offence in the court,’’ he said. |
http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/07/nysc-tighens-security-at-orientation.html Alhaji Salisu Taura, the Sokoto State Coordinator of the NYSC, said on Wednesday that sufficient security personnel had been deployed to ensure the safety of corps members at the Sokoto orientation camp.Taura told journalists in Sokoto that additional measures had also been taken to effectively provide security services at the camp. He said that GSM recharge card hawkers and others had been driven away from the camp as part of the security methods adopted to protect the corps members. Taura said only recognised food vendors were allowed to operate in the camp while all routes leading to the camp had been barricaded to avert any security breach. He called on the corps members to be vigilant and report any suspicious character to the nearest security point at the camp for prompt action. (NAN) |
Nigeria’s D’Tigers survived a third quarter run by the Dominican Republic to secure the final ticket to the men’s basketball event of the London Olympics early hours of yesterday, winning 88-73 in Caracas, Venezuela. D’ Tigers simply had too many weapons and brought all to bear. Despite being forced to change from their lucky all-green kit in which they are yet to be beaten - the Nigerians senior basketball team looked just as comfortable in their back up all white. Ike Diogu was a monster especially in the fourth quarter when D’Tiger repeatedly dialled his number. But so was Aminu Junior who swatted away Dominican balls all night ending up with a five of the Nigeria's eight blocks. His game was of such quality that the hardest decision of the night was who would win MVP, him or Diogu? The Dominicans though were no slouches and despite falling behind by double digits went on repeated runs that saw them tie once and come within two the second time. One Martinez rained destruction from far and the other went through the middle almost all night long. University of Kentucky's Coach Calipari and NBA journey man Dale Harris were at the helm of the Dominican ship and their savvy showed. But so did Coach Ayo Bakare's. He used his bench perfectly - kick starting his defence as well as attack with the substitution of his role players. Even absolutely horrible shooting from the line could not derail his cats whose eyes never left the prize. At the end of night it was him doing the dancing in the middle of the floor while his players celebrated with their fans high up in the stands. Considering that Nigeria beat both the number four and five teams in the world before dismissing the team from the Caribbean, there was no doubt that the rightful team along with Russia and Lithuania are going to the London Olympics. Nigeria now joins Tunisia as Africa's two representatives and is tipped to go far in the tournament. Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has congratulated the Nigerian male basketball team, D’Tigers for qualifying for the London 2012 Olympics by grabbing the third spot at the FIBA Olympics Qualifier which took place in Caracas, Venezuela. Abdullahi said the team showed unusual passion, discipline and commitment, which are hallmarks of the Nigerian spirit. In a congratulatory letter to the President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation, Tijani Umar, the minister wrote: “With the kind of overwhelming joy that followed this historic achievement across our country where people stayed awake to follow the match, one cannot but feel that perhaps, a revolution is about to happen in Nigerian sports and this may ultimately be a triumph for basketball. According to him, “the ‘boys’ can be confident that a grateful nation will remember for a long time to come that they, with typical Nigerian grits and determination, have extended the frontiers of our achievements in sports by qualifying our country for the men's basketball events of the Olympic for the first time ever. He however urged the team not to be lulled by its present victory but to focus on the ultimate prize. “The destination is London. And, I have no doubt in my mind, that with the Almighty God on our side and with the same commitment and will to excel, D'Tigers will triumph in London and your names would be written in gold.” Responding to the Minister’s charge, Umar, the President of the NBBF commended the effort of the minister towards ensuring the team’s qualification to the Games and vowed that the team would always do its best. With the qualification, the 12-member basketball team will now join 42 other Nigerian athletes for the London 2012 Olympics Games starting on July 27 through August 12. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/07/dtigers-qualify-for-london-olympics.html |
The Palestinian Authority agreed on Wednesday to the exhumation of Yasser Arafat's body after new allegations that he was poisoned with the radioactive element polonium-210 in 2004. A Swiss institute that examined clothing provided by Arafat's widow Suha as part of an Al Jazeera expose said it found ``surprisingly'' high levels of polonium-210, though symptoms described in the president's medical reports were not consistent with the radioactive agent. The Palestinian administration said it would approve Suha Arafat's request to bring Arafat's remains up for autopsy from his limestone mausoleum in the West Bank city of Ramallah. ``The Authority, as it always has been, is ready to completely cooperate with and clear the way for an investigation into the true causes leading to the martyrdom of the late president," said Nabil Abu Rdeineh, spokesman to Arafat's successor as Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, without giving a date for such a move. ``I want the world to know the truth about the assassination of Yasser Arafat,''Suha Arafat told the Qatar-based satellite TV channel, without making any direct accusations but noted that Israel and the U.S. saw him as an obstacle to peace. The findings stirred up old Palestinian suspicions Israel was behind the death of the 75-year-old ex-guerrilla it had shunned after peace talks collapsed into bloodshed in 2000. Long ill, Arafat was airlifted to a military hospital in France where he died on November 11, 2004. French doctors who treated him in his final days said they could not establish the cause of death. French officials, citing privacy laws, refused to give details of the nature of his illness. Polonium, apparently ingested with food, was found to have caused the slow death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.(Reuters) http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/07/palestinians-arafats-body-can-be.html |
If the dead could see, Harold Mordy Douglas, first colonial commissioner of Owerri District, would be rejoicing in his grave that the modest administrative block he completed in Owerri, the present day capital of Imo state, on May 11, 1902, has become the official residence of successive governors of the state. Several administrations that came after him, particularly those who ran the affairs of the city after the country gained independence on October 1, 1960, had tried to modernise the ancient building that the colonial masters had bequeathed to them. Some turned it into an official residence instead of merely using it as an office block. For instance, the first civilian governor of Imo State, Chief Sam Onunaka Mbakwe, lived and worked on the same land where Douglas built the colonial administrative block in the city. But before then, the facility has been transformed into a modern government house, and named after Douglas. A major road in the now sprawling city of Owerri, is also named after the colonial administrator Quite significantly, each administration in the state, tries hard to expand, modify and modernise Douglas House. Ikedi Ohakim, immediate past governor of the state, did his best to give the building a face-lift. But when Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha, assumed office on May 29, 2011, he commended his predecessor for building a main office for the governor, but he however thought that Ohakim’s best was not actually his best. He has built an exquisite administrative block inside the government house complex. The building is made of glasses and marbles, and the governor is currently furnishing the facility to meet his own taste. The multi-purpose hall and almost all the buildings inside the government house were knocked down by Governor Okorocha, and in less than six months, several magnificent buildings have sprung up inside the Imo Douglas House. One of them is the expanded and modernised executive council chambers which is named after Mbakwe. The expanded executive chambers are beautifully decorated with Italian tiles; the conference hall could boast of accommodating over 1000 people at the same time, and this is besides the impressive press gallery. Another amazing edifice inside the Government House is a twin building which is a replica of the building housing the governor’s office. The twin- building was also built in less than six months, and it houses the offices of the deputy governor, and the First Lady of the state. Before Governor Okorocha assumed office, both offices could easily pass for a poultry house. But today, a VIP lounge where the governor entertains his guests exists in that same site. Also, a functional chaplain now exists inside the Government House, courtesy of the reconstruction of the former banquet hall, adjacent to the helicopter pad. The pad used to serve as the lawn tennis court built by the Ohakim administration. The beautification of the compound is another seemingly wonders to behold. Apart from the lush green plants that adorn the compound, a 20 -meter water fountain sits opposite the Sam Mbakwe expanded executive council chambers. Imo state deputy governor, Sir Jude Agbaso who also doubles as the commissioner for works noted with satisfaction that the building which would serve as guest houses of former governors of the state, has reached its foundation stage. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/07/okorocha-flaunts-new-government-house.html

Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, has won the African Leadership Magazine Award for best Governor of the year in the area of Peace and Reconciliation in the North West geo political zone. Governor Yakowa according to former Vice President Alex Ekwueme was nominated for the award due to his tact in handling the security challenges in Kaduna State. The award was presented to the governor in Abuja at a ceremony tagged: “Heroes of Nigerian Democracy and development Awards – 2012”, held at Sheraton Hotel and towers, Abuja. According to the organisers, the choice of Yakowa from the North West was unanimous because the heterogeneous nature of Kaduna State which makes it a mini Nigeria takes a man with versed leadership quality and experience to govern. The $620,000 bribery scandal involving a federal legislator, Farouk Lawan and businessman, Femi Otedola, has entered a new phase with Otedola asking a court to order Lawan and three others to pay him N250bn in damages. The suit coincides with petitions to the Inspector-General of Police by Lawan’s lawyers demanding a face-to-face confrontation between the lawmaker and the businessman. The amount, Otedola says, will compensate him for the loss of patronage he has suffered as a result of an alleged intimidation by the National Assembly. Listed as defendants in the suit number FCT /3839/2012 and filed on June 28, 2012 at the Abuja High Court, are Lawan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal; the National Assembly and its Clerk. There had been a raging scandal in which Otedola, who is the Chairman of Zenon Oil and Gas Limited, claimed that he paid $620,000 as bribe to Lawan, the suspended Chairman of the House Ad hoc Committee that probed the management of fuel subsidy regime in the country. While Otedola said that he paid the bribe under pressure, Lawan claimed that he obtained the bribe in order to expose the businessman. The businessman’s company which had been removed from the list of subsidy thieves on the request of Lawan has, however, been re-listed by the House following the outbreak of the bribery scandal. Otedola, who is suing along with Zenon as the first plaintiff, said in his 28-paragraph statement of claim that the re-listing of Zenon on the list of indicted companies was an act of conspiracy. He claimed that the alleged conspiracy by both Tambuwal and the National Assembly was calculated to embarrass him and his company. In his statement of claim, Otedola states, “Notwithstanding the on-going Police investigations and the first defendant’s admission of receiving money from the second plaintiff, the second and fourth defendants conspired to relist the name of the first plaintiff to the list of indicted companies, to embarrass the plaintiffs and their corporate and business image. “The plaintiffs shall contend at trial that the conspiracy by the second and fourth defendants (Tambuwal and the National Assembly respectively) to re-list the name of the first plaintiff on the list of companies indicted by the ad-hoc committee is without basis given that the committee’s finding was arrived at without proper verification of documents submitted by the plaintiffs to aid their enquiry.” MORE ENTRIES ON http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/07/otedola-sues-tambuwal-lawan-others-for.html |
An Algerian-born leader of Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) was killed in the northern Malian town of Gao on Friday, while Islamist groups claimed control of the area, local media reported. Malian news websites reported the death of Mokhtar Belmokhtar, and said the separatist rebel National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), which won control of Gao in early April, was ousted. Belmokhtar had reportedly arrived in Gao on Thursday with dozens of Algerian fighters to bolster the presence of Islamist faction Ansar Dine and the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO). Both Ansar Dine and MUJAO had been engaged in heavy fighting against MNLA rebels earlier in the week. According to witness reports, at least 23 people had been killed in unrest in Gao since Tuesday. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/al-qaida-leader-killed-in-mali.html

Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth on Friday after achieving China's most complex and longest operations in orbit, major steps forward in the country's effort to build a space station by 2020, reports AFP. The return of the trio, including the country's first female astronaut, to a landing zone in a remote and sandy area of northern China was broadcast to a national audience on state television network CCTV. The return capsule of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft, which lifted off on June 16, hit the ground about 10:00 am (0200 GMT), after an approach slowed by a large parachute. Rescue workers quickly surrounded and opened the capsule, which had turned on its side and looked charred on the outside. All three astronauts were in good physical condition, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported, as CCTV showed them being carried out of the capsule on chairs, smiling and waving to the cameras. The crew had successfully carried out China's first manual space docking with the orbiting Tiangong-1 module, a difficult move that is essential in the process of building a space station -- which Beijing aims to do by 2020. Precisely two months after he narrowly escaped death following an attack on his convoy at Auchi area, Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole again came under attack by yet to be identified gunmen while his campaign train stopped at Usen town, Ovia South West Local Government Area of the state. Oshiomhole had paid the customary homage to the Onogie of Usen, His Royal Highness Oluogbe II at his palace where he received a rousing welcome from the monarch and the council of chiefs as well a tumultuous crowd of well-wishers gathered outside the palace. At about 6pm, Oshiomhole’s convoy left the palace. It had not travelled too far down the road when it ran into a barricade. Naturally, the security details attached to the governor came down to remove the bar. As they were clearing it, tens of heavily armed thugs emerged from nowhere and opened fire on the governor for several seconds. Dutifully, the brave security details attached to the governor, supported by an additional contingent of regular policemen deployed to maintain law and order, rose to the occasion. They were able to shield the governor, key government functionaries and others including leaders of Edo Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to safety without sustaining any human casualties. But several official vehicles including Toyota Landcruisers, Hilux pick-up van and Toyota Corolla saloon car were either badly damaged or riddled with bullets. Apparently annoyed that they missed their target, the thugs later descended on the near-by police post and vandalised it. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/oshiomholes-convoy-attacked-again.html |
Dasuki In Yobe, Vows To End Bombings Before Ramadan The new national security adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd), stated yesterday that President Goodluck Jonathan was committed to ensuring that peace and normalcy is restored in the country, before the Ramadan fast commences. Speaking when he visited Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, Dasuki added that his visit to the state was to engage with stakeholders and the government with a view to hearing from them on ways of addressing the security problems. Dasuki’s visit to Yobe is the first by a highly placed federal government official to the state amid rising insurgencies in the state. The new NSA also sought the support of royal fathers. He said: “If one considers the colossal loss these confrontations cause due to the unconventional methods of the insurgents, the option of resolution through dialogue and negotiation should be pursued as a priority. “Government is committed to bringing an end to the security challenges and there is the need to put heads together to bring an end to the situation as we want to go back to normalcy and move forward.” Dasuki said that there would be no development, employment and progress in the face of violence. “I do not see how anybody is benefiting out of this.’’ He commiserated with the government and people of Yobe State over recent security breaches which led to loss of lives and property. Yobe State governor Ibrahim Gaidam, for his part, appealed to the federal government to deploy more troops to the state, saying the current security challenges that the state faces require even more robust efforts to address it. He also refuted insinuations that the situation in Yobe was an attack by the Muslims against the Christians. He said: “The attacks cut across all religious inclinations with churches as well as public buildings like schools including Islamiyyah (Islamic school) and government vehicles being destroyed. Furthermore, most of the innocent lives lost were from the majority Muslim population of the state.” The governor commended President Jonathan for taking wide-ranging measures to tackle insecurity in the state and other parts of the north, including the appointment of a new national security adviser to coordinate and advance effort to restore peace and security. “There is a clear change of strategy in the fight against insecurity as promised by Mr. President. There is an indication that our hopes, pride and dignity as citizens of this great country would be restored,” Gaidam said. Gaidam also commended the Joint Task Force (JTF) operating in the state for its unwavering effort at ensuring the safety and security of people’s lives and property. The governor noted that the Yobe State government supports “dialogue and negotiation” with the Boko Haram group but this should be pursued “to the extent that the insurgents are willing to accept to negotiate and dialogue”. He urged the people of the state and other Nigerians to disregard rumours and continue to pray for restoration of peace and cooperate with security agencies in their efforts towards bringing back normalcy and peace in the state and the nation at large. Poverty, illiteracy behind insecurity, not religion – Lamido. Meanwhile, Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido has attributed the insecurity problems in the country as a manifestation of a high level of poverty and illiteracy in the society. According to him, the security crisis was not caused by religious or ethnic sentiments but was caused fully by frustration and collapse in social values. The governor stated this while receiving the management of Nagarta Radio, Kaduna, who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Dutse. Lamido explained that the killings and maimings in Nigeria have caught across all tribes and religious groups. According to him, due to high level of illiteracy and desperation among Nigerians, it is common now to see people of the same tribe or religion engaged in killing each other for unknown reasons. He said: “If people are educated and have a decent life, everybody would be an ambassador for peace, while crisis would not have chance in the society.” The governor also charged the management of Nagarta Radio and all media houses to redefine their work to create more avenues for carrying stories and programmes that educate people and make everybody understand that peace is indispensable for his survival and that of his faith. Responding, the managing director of Nagarta Radio, Alhaji Yusuf Saulawa, stated that the management of the radio was in the state to establish relations with people of the state and also find ways to collaborate with the state government for the enlightenment of the general public on the good policies and programmes initiated by the Lamido-led administration. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/dasuki-in-yobe-vows-to-end-bombings.html |
Google is on a roll at I/O, with the second day of proceedings again bringing in a number of notable announcements and releases that will certainly please iOS users. Day two of the event is well underway with delegates and attending developers being informed that Google’s Chrome browser has been released for iPhone and iPad and is now available for download immediately. Google Chrome is one of the world’s most advanced and popular web browser, used by millions of people around the world on desktop and notebook computers, as well as mobile devices running the Android OS. Until now, users of the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad had been left in the dark in terms of an official Chrome release, and instead had to settle for Apple’s Mobile Safari or other alternative browsers on the App Store. Google Chrome for iOS allows users to benefit from the same lightning fast speed which Chrome is famous for and blesses users with full Google account services and synchronization of data across multiple devices registered under the same account. An excellent tabbed browsing experience that offers unlimited number of opened tabs will also make an appearance in the iOS Chrome build. Incognito browsing is also making an appearance in this mobile version of Chrome, affording users the same luxuries as the desktop version relating to private browsing. One of the great things about Google pushing out a native build of Chrome for iOS is that it will allow millions of people to enjoy a more consistent web browsing experience across the multiple devices that they own rather than having to flick between Chrome and Mobile Safari. Demonstrated by Brian Rakowski, who is the VP of the Chrome division at Google, the browser does indeed give Mobile Safari a healthy competition on the same platform. The release of Chrome is definitely a welcome addition to the App Store, but sadly, Apple doesn’t allow iOS users to set any other browser as default apart from Safari, meaning that any app or link that requires a web browser to be opened will automatically invoke Mobile Safari instead of anything else. Users who are involved in jailbreaking will be aware of a tweak that allows default browser settings to be altered, but stock users will need to get used to a rather choppy experience. It is also important to note that in order to comply with guidelines of Apple’s App Store, Chrome for iOS uses same engine as Mobile Safari. Chrome for iOS can be downloaded right now from iTunes App Store here. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/google-chrome-browser-for-iphone-and.html

A civil society group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given President Goodluck Jonathan seven days ultimatum to publicly declare the assets he owned between May 2007 and May 2012. In a statement signed by the executive director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, the group said that failure to comply with the request within seven days will compel it to seek appropriate legal action to enforce the FOI on the president. The group said: “The disclosure of the information requested will give SERAP and the general public a true picture of the assets of the president from May 2007 to May 2012, and will demonstrate the president’s oft-expressed commitment to transparency and accountability, and show that your signing of the FOI was not http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/serap-gives-jonathan-7-day-ultimatum-to.html |
Stakeholders in the Nigerian education sector have expressed displeasure with the decision of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to suspend part-time programmes in Nigerian universities. The angst is even more heightened as an estimated 10 million students, most of them workers, may be affected by the decision. In arriving at the decision, NUC had argued that the accreditation of 30 courses in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) would satisfy the needs of this category of Nigerian students who see part-time studies as a way of improving themselves and enhancing their careers. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/about-10m-students-hit-by-suspension-of.html |

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Announced: Siri-like Voice Search, Revamped Notifications, Offline Voice Dictation And More While Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is still on less than 10% of all Android smartphones and tablets, Google has announced the next version of Android: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. As you can tell by the .1 increase in version number, it’s more of an incremental update than the revolutionary update that Ice Cream Sandwich was. We’ve got the details right after the jump! Project Butter Google started the keynote by discussing Project Butter in Jelly Bean. With Jelly Bean, Google has put a lot of effort into making the UI much, much smoother. Using VSync (a term PC gamers will be familiar with) and triple buffering, animations are buttery smooth and frame rate is a consistent, mind-blowing 120FPS. Similar to how iOS handles things, in 4.1 Jelly Bean, the CPU speeds up when you touch the screen. Google showed the difference between ICS and JB’s UI with a high-speed camera. The difference is phenomenal. more on http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/android-41-jelly-bean-announced-siri.html |

Subsidy probe: Again, Senate summons Okonjo-Iweala Meanwhile, the Senate has again asked the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the economy, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to appear before it to answer to respond to some other issues that cropped up in the course of the probe management of fuel subsidy fund. That latest invitation, which is the second in a month, includes an expanded list among who are former heads of federal government agencies. Others summoned are the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Mr. Reginald Stanley, Managing Director of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) and at least three former PPPRA Executive Secretaries. They are: Dr. Olusola Oluleye; Mr. Abiodun Ibikunle; and Engr. Goddy Egbuji. Also invited are the Chief Executive Officers of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, Oando Nigeria Plc, Mr. Wale Tinubu and Folawiyo Energy. In the list of invitees are Depot and Petroleum Marketers Association (DAPPMA). In a signed statement from the Senate Joint Committees on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Appropriation and Finance on Tuesday, all the invited stakeholders are expected to appear before the committee between Monday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 3. Senate is presently on a week-long retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. A member of the panel said next week’s interaction with government officials and private sector operators is expected to be the last public meeting after which the committee is to submit its report to the Senate. The committee had earlier postponed a scheduled meeting of stakeholders in the oil sector due to the Dana air crash in Iju-Ishaga, Lagos on June 3. The Senate probe emanated from a resolution in November last year based on a motion by Senator Bukola Saraki who raised the alarm on government’s extra-budgetary spending on fuel subsidy in 2011. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/as-jonathan-fires-oniwon-others-yakubu.html |

Gunmen with explosives attacked a police station on Tuesday in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, previously targeted by Islamist militant group Boko Haram, a police source said.“Goron Dutse police station is under attack by gunmen using explosives and guns,” a senior police official said on condition of anonymity. An AFP journalist heard five blasts and saw smoke in the area of the police station. The explosions later halted, and the extent of the damage remained unclear as well as if there were casualties. Kano, Nigeria’s second city and the largest in the north, was the site of Boko Haram’s deadliest attack yet, when coordinated bombings and shootings left at least 185 people dead in January. The Islamist group’s insurgency, concentrated in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, has killed more than 1,000 people since mid-2009. http://www.dailyngnews.com/2012/06/gunmen-attack-kano-police-station-with.html |
