Business / Facebook’s Reality Check Sends Stock Reeling by Legitinfobase(m): 6:27pm On Jul 26, 2018
It has turned into a brutal reality check for Facebook.
The social network star — which had weathered storms over privacy and data protection — is now looking ahead at a cloudier financial future that threatens to end its years-long breakneck growth pace.
Shares in Facebook plummeted 19 percent to $175.30 in early trade Thursday, wiping out some $100 billion — believed to be the worst single-day evaporation of market value for any company.
The plunge came one day after the company missed revenue forecasts for the second quarter and warned that growth would be far weaker than previously estimated.
Chief financial officer David Wehner warned Wednesday in an earnings call with analysts that revenue growth had already “decelerated” in the second quarter and would drop “by high single digit percentages” in coming quarters.
At one point during the call, Facebook shares were trading down as much as 24 percent, an unprecedented drop for a large firm.
On the call, Jefferies & Co. analyst Brent Thill said that “many investors are having a hard time reconciling that deceleration… It just seems like the magnitude is beyond anything we’ve seen.”
Facebook said the slowdown will come in part from a new approach to privacy and security, but also appeared to acknowledge the limits of growth in advertising, which accounts for virtually all its revenue.
– More humans needed –
Richard Windsor, a technology analyst who writes the Radio Free Mobile blog, said the new outlook should not be surprising.
“This is a direct result of scale as it becomes increasingly difficult to grow at such high rates when a company hits this size,” Windsor wrote.
Windsor added that Facebook is forced to hire more people to handle tasks such as filtering inappropriate content after discovering the limits of artificial intelligence.
“Weaknesses in AI are forcing (Facebook) to keep hiring humans to do the jobs that the machines are incapable of,” he said.
Brian Wieser at Pivotal Research Group said the company appears to have hit a “wall” on growth in advertising.
In a research note, he said Facebook’s outlook “suggests that while the company is still growing at a fast clip, the days of 30 percent-plus growth are numbered.”
– Has social media peaked? –
Until Wednesday, Facebook shares had been at record highs as investors seemed to shrug off fears about data protection and probes into the hijacking of private information by the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.
For the second quarter, profit was up 31 percent at $5.1 billion; revenues rose 42 percent to $13.2 billion, only slightly below most forecasts.
Facebook reported its user base was still growing but not as fast as some expected. Monthly active users rose 11 percent to 2.23 billion, below most estimates of 2.25 billion.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook has invested heavily in “safety, security and privacy” after being rocked by concerns of manipulation of the platform to spread misinformation, warning of an “impact” on profitability.
Ross Gerber, an analyst at Gerber Kawasaki, said the latest figures suggest that the tide may be turning for Facebook and other social networks.
“Social Media has peaked,” Gerber said on Twitter. “We told you last qtr and now we’re seeing it.”
– Not so fast-
Some analysts however said it was too soon to write off Facebook or its growth prospects, and that the company may have simply been warning of the worst-case scenario.
“The company has a track record of resetting revenue growth and expense expectations only to turn around and exceed those expectations the following quarter,” said Gene Munster of Loup Ventures.
“We suspect Facebook is sticking with its historical playbook and will, in fact, beat these lower numbers.”
Richard Greenfield of BTIG Research said he remained upbeat on Facebook despite the abrupt forecast shift.
“Facebook is actively choosing to make less money, deprioritizing near-term monetization to drive engagement to even higher levels,” Greenfield said in a note to clients.
Greenfield said he could “sense the fear/panic in investors’ voices” after the Facebook analyst call but that he has maintained his outlook.
“Mobile is eating the world and Facebook is a core holding to benefit from that shift,” he said.

Crime / Group Threatens To Drag Perpetrators Of Herdsmen/farmers Crisis To ICC by Legitinfobase(m): 6:39am On Jul 25, 2018
- A group has threatened to expose the perpetrators of the herders/farmers crisis across the country - The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre (SHAC) said the conflicts between the herders and the farmers had a political undertone - SHAC also threatened to drag to drag the perpetrators of the killings to the International Criminal Court A civil society organisation has threatened to drag the perpetrators of the herdsmen/farmers crisis across Nigeria to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The organisation, Save Humanity Advocacy Centre (SHAC) condemned the alleged ongoing politically masterminded killings in Nigeria. The group, while threatening to drag those behind the bloodletting in the country to the ICC said the endless clashes between herders and farmers, which has led to lost of lives and valuables worth millions of naira had political undertone. SHAC lamented that some individuals and organisations have taken the laws into their hands by inciting political violence in innocent and harmless Nigerian citizens. the executive director of SHAC said that there are overwhelming facts to show that some individuals and organizations are taking advantage of the ethnic and religious fragility of Nigeria to sow seeds of hate and discord to achieve political goals. Odoh said: “This act of impunity, this rampage of impunity must be stopped in the interest of the continued existence of Nigeria and by extension the African continent because of the strategic role Nigeria plays in the political and economic stabilisation of the African continent." “As a first, the ICC has the jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes," Odoh said. The question we therefore seek to ask the ICC is whether acts deliberately committed as part of an attack aimed at a specific sect of the population can be considered as a crime against humanity? And if yes, why hasn’t the ICC deemed it pertinent to commence prosecution of these individuals and organisations? Does Nigeria not fall under its jurisdiction? Some of these questions we demand answers to in the interest of peace and stability. “Having stated the above, we are in unequivocal terms requesting for an immediate investigation on the sponsors of politically motivated killings in Nigeria, and also scrutiny of the various petitions that have been submitted to the ICC in recent times. we are aware that petitions have been lodged against some governors who have instigated attacked aimed at a specific sect of the population in their states. For example, the governors of Taraba and the Benue States are culpable in this regard, despite the “we are the victims” public posturing that they have embraced to cover for their nefarious activities. Some other individuals that are supposed to conduct themselves as elder statesmen like General T.Y. Danjuma, have also constituted themselves into that clog in the wheels of progress in the country by directly and indirectly inciting the people to take up arms against a particular sect in the society.

We are worried that no single individual has been called for questioning despite overwhelming pieces of evidences before the ICC," Odoh noted. Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that herdsmen and farmers in Mashegu local government area of Niger state have signed a peace agreement. The agreement is aimed at ending the clashes between the herders and farmers across Nigeria. Abdullahi Babayo, the director-general of nomadic affairs agency in the state, said the aim of the meeting was also to reconcile communities that were affected by farmers/herdsmen crisis in the area.

Crime / 38 Years Old Woman Killed By Lover After Discovering Condoms In Her Bag by Legitinfobase(m): 3:31pm On Jul 23, 2018
BENIN CITY – A 38 years old mother of three has been allegedly killed in Benin by her lover after he found male condoms inside her hand bag. The dastardly act was said to have occurred at 13, Ehiyoboy Street, Off Aifuwa Street, Off Upper Sokponba road, Benin City, few hours after she left her lover’s residence where she passed the night. Vanguard learnt that the victim identified as Gladys Okoh who had parted ways with husband, was stabbed with a kitchen knife thrice in her stomach inside her aged mother’s room by her lover one Osaremwinda Omobude Idumwonyi, 46. It was also gathered that the alleged discovery of condoms fuelled the man’s suspicion that she was embroiled in sizzling romantic relationships with other men. A visit to the area revealed that the scene of the attack and the suspect’s residence are nearby buildings. The suspect, now cooling off his heels at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Benin City was said to have left his residence to commit the act. He was further alleged to have walked passed her aged mother who was sitting by the door to launch the attack as her efforts to rescue her daughter who screamed in pains during the violence failed. It could not be ascertained whether the said condoms were found inside Gladys’ bag while she was with him in his room the previous night or during the day when he entered her aged mother’s rented apartment. Police source at the State Criminal Investigation Department disclosed that the suspected killer Osaremwinda Omobude Idumwonyi told the police the deceased lover picked a kitchen knife to stab him when an argument ensued as he overpowered and killed her while defending himself. However, the said knife was recovered from the suspect’s kitchen by police investigators when he was arrested and taken home for a search. Confirming the gruesome murder, the Public Relations Officer for Edo State Police Command DSP Chidi Nwabuzor simply said, “we are investigating”. This brings to two, the number of women reportedly killed by their lovers in Benin City, in the past two weeks. It will be recalled that a 19-year-old boy similarly stabbed his 18 year-old girlfriend to death in Benin City, a fortnight ago.

Politics / Lawmakers Ask NCAA To Test Pilots For Alcohol, Drugs by Legitinfobase(m): 11:50am On Jul 20, 2018
Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday, July 19, urged the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to begin alcohol and drug test for pilots before flight take-off.
Punch reports that the lawmakers said the test should be conducted regularly to ensure that the pilots and crew members are not under the influence of any kind of substance.
In a motion raised by a member of the House, Taofeek Adaranijo, said alcohol and other psychoactive substances are capable of altering the moods of the crew.
Adaranijo said pre-flight alcohol consumption, apart from being a breach of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, also constituted a serious safety threat to passengers.
He said: “In December 2016, the NCAA suspended the medical certificates of five members of the crew, who tested positive to marijuana during a drug screening conducted on participants of the Cabin Crew Training Basic Course at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, Kaduna state.
“When the NCAA in May 2017 conducted random tests on 87 personnel from Air Peace, Med-View and Air Traffic Controllers of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency as they were about to embark upon flight operations and air traffic control duties, a member of the crew tested positive to a psychoactive substance, Tetrahydrocannabinol.
“The substance is known to be the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects.
“Psychoactive drugs work by manipulating the synapses in-between nerves in the central nervous system, thereby distorting thought processes and causing a variety of side effects such as anxiety, psychosis, mood swings, depression and sleep problems, all of which are not suitable for the job demands of pilots/members of crew," Adaranijo said.
The lawmaker also said that crew member require the highest level of clarity in the mind in order to fly safely.
The House further asked airline operators to diligently ensure that only sober pilots/members of crew are allowed to fly their planes and this diligence should extend to the initial period of employment.
It was previously reported that the federal government had announced its plan to intensify surveillance on airlines across the country.
The NCAA said the checks by the agency is due to the recent incidents in the sector which are raising safety concerns among Nigerians
The agency also said it has deepened its oversight on the airlines with a view to ensuring that no stone is left unturned in their safety programmes.

Ekiti State House of Assembly have adjourned sitting till the 8th of October, 2018 in protest of last Saturday's governorship election. The Leader of Business in the house, Honourable Akinyele Olatunji, who moved the motion for the adjournment said this became imperative due to the political harassment of members by security agents.
The lawmakers condemned and rejected the result of the governorship election in the state as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Chairman House Committee on Information, Hon (Dr) Samuel Omotoso, said the election of July 14, 2018 did not meet up with all democratic credentials.
He pointed out that the election was marred by violence, vote buying and falsification of results.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable (Pastor) Kola Oluwawole, described the election as a show of shame, with thugs and security men openly working for the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers concluded that the result of the governorship election stood rejected by the House, that the security agencies should vacate the entrance of the Government House where they were currently laying siege and also condemned the siege on the government owned radio and television outfits by armed military personnel.
