Crime / A Case Of Child Abuse by Legitinfobase(m): 12:22pm On Sep 09, 2018
The gory picture above is that of a little girl of thirteen years old from Akwa Ibom state that lives with her uncle, one Mr Effiong Sunday at Brass street Etegwe Yenagoa Bayelsa State.

On Tuesday 5th September 2018 the little girl was accused of stealing three thousand naira from her next door neighbor. After questioning and interrogation from her Uncle (Mr Sunday Effiong) the little girl said she didn't steal any money.

The uncle insisted that she must tell him the truth and he started beating her up mercilessly. Later he removed her cloths and started burning her with a hot pressing Iron that she must tell him the whereabout of the money. According to the little girl, he continued to burn her face and breast with the hot pressing Iron and she accepted she stole the money under duress.

The painful side of the story is that the neighbor eventually found his money where he kept it.

Despite the injuries he inflicted on the little girl, her uncle didn't bother to take her to the hospital for treatment.

The following morning being Friday 7 September, neighbors started frowning and spreading the story after seeing the injuries on the girl.

The information got to Mr Numoipre Benson Ayah, Tony Owei Angagha and my humble self and we decided to see what we could do to help the little girl.

We contacted DO FOUNDATION, an NGO that is into CHILD ABUSE and other related matters chaired by Barrister Dise Ogbesi Sheila and her second Excel Bright.

The little girl was taken to the Ekeki police station. Mr Sunday Effiong and his wife were invited for interrogation by the Gender Desk Office.

The little girl is now receiving treatment in the hospital Courtesy of DO FOUNDATION.

While we await justice we say a big thank you to barrister Dise ogbesi Sheila and Excel bright of DO FOUNDATION for their swift intervention, we also say a big thank you to the police, doctors and others that are concerned in the little girl's plight.

Nairaland / General / Homeless Man Sues Couple Who Raised $400,000 To Help Him by Legitinfobase(m): 4:27pm On Aug 31, 2018
A homeless American man has sued a couple who raised more $400,000 to help him.
The homeless good Samaritan who gained national fame after the stranded motorist he gave his last $20 to raised more than $400,000 in his name is now suing her and her boyfriend, claiming the couple is committing fraud by taking more than half of the money for themselves.
On Tuesday, attorneys for Johnny Bobbitt Jr. filed the lawsuit in the Superior Court of New Jersey in Burlington County against Kate McClure, 28 and Mark D’Amico, 39.
Last year, Bobbitt, a 35-year-old Marine Corps veteran who was living on the streets of Philadelphia, gave McClure the last of the cash he had panhandled that day after she ran out of gas on Interstate 95, McClure wrote on a GoFundMe fundraiser she created on Nov. 10.
Bobbitt even instructed McClure to get back in her car and lock the doors before returning minutes later with a red gas can, McClure wrote.
At first, McClure showed her gratitude to Bobbitt by providing him with food, clothes and some cash.
Then, more than 14,000 people who were moved by Bobbitt’s generosity and his unlikely friendship with McClure donated over $402,000 to the fundraiser, but Bobbitt is now back on the streets and worried that he may never see the bulk of the money, according to the lawsuit.

The couple initially provided Bobbitt with “some of the monies contributed” but have declined to provide him with access to the rest, according to the lawsuit.

Bobbitt alleges that the couple has spent more than half of the funds raised, treating it like their “personal piggy bank to fund a lifestyle that they could not otherwise afford,” his attorneys wrote.
Bobbitt’s drug addiction has relapsed and he is back on the Philadelphia streets panhandling for money after completing two stints in rehab, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported last week.

Speech BY HIS EXCELLENCY (DR.) ABUBAKAR BUKOLA SARAKI, CON, PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, AT A DIALOGUE WITH YOUTH AND YOUNG ASPIRANTS HELD AT SHERATON HOTEL, ABUJA, ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2018.

1. Let me say, once again, how wonderful it is to see so many talented and purposeful young people at this first edition of the Public Dialogue Series with Political Parties on Youth Candidacy and Party Primaries. Looking at you, I see future leaders who present themselves as capable and worthy to take on the mantle of leadership in this country, and this gladdens my heart.

2. From my interactions with many of you, and with your contemporaries across the country, I can see that we are blessed with a determined generation that stands ready to join with us to power a Nigerian renaissance. The quality of people I see here today affirms my belief that, indeed, you are Not Too Young To Run.

3. I deeply appreciate this opportunity to share some of my ideas about where we are as a nation, as well as the challenges before us as we approach the great decider that is the 2019 General Elections.

4. It is widely acknowledged that ours is a relatively ‘young’ country bursting with tremendous energy, ability and potential. More than 70 per cent of our population is under the age of 40. You are indeed the future of this country. Ordinarily, such a young population would be the envy of many Western countries that are faced with ageing populations, but the dire state of our affairs tarnishes the youthful advantage that we have.

5. Up and down our country today, Nigerians are crying out for succour. Many of our children are hungry. Many people are dying of avoidable or otherwise treatable diseases. Many have fallen below basic living standards, and are now among the 87 million that sealed Nigeria’s position as the country with the highest number of people in extreme poverty. Our young people lack opportunities. The necessary education facilities and system to equip them for the future simply do not exist. We are not creating the jobs needed to usefully engage them in order to grow our economy. And too often, the youth feel shut out, prevented from having any say in the direction of this nation.

6. The harsh conditions of extreme poverty faced by the people, fuels the state of insecurity all over the country. Hunger, lack of education and lack of opportunities push many Nigerians into criminal activities including terrorism. Many of our communities are paralysed with fear – due to incessant communal crises, kidnappings and other social ills, as well as the threat of terrorism. We are failing abysmally to tackle the problems of today and to prepare for the future.

7. Our economy is broken and is in need of urgent revival in order for Nigeria to grow. GDP growth rate has declined. Diversification remains an illusion. Unemployment is at an all-time high. Businesses are shutting down. Jobs are being lost in record numbers, and the capital needed to jumpstart our economy is going elsewhere.

8. Nigeria is perhaps more divided now than ever before. We are increasingly divided along regional, religious and ethnic lines. Nigerians are also divided by class, a festering gulf between the ‘Haves’ and the ‘Have-Nots’. The fault lines of this nation are widening to an alarming degree. We must do something fast, and we must be brave about it.

9. We must ensure the security of lives in Nigeria. As things stand now, no one is safe in this country. No one feels truly safe. We must restore the sanctity of the rule of law and strengthen democratic institutions in order to build a just, fair and equitable society for all. We must rebuild the trust of our people in government. We need a new generation of leaders that are competent, with the capability to rise to the challenges of the 21st century. We must pull this country back together and rebuild, block by block, with dedication and commitment.

10. You will agree with me that this is an urgent task that requires the concerted efforts of each and every one of us. If we look around today, what do we see? What is the condition of our citizens? Where are we as a nation? How are we perceived locally and internationally? Why are we not making the expected progress? Why are we not growing? There is no time to waste. The time is now, to come together to stimulate growth in Nigeria, especially in the national economy.

11. The choice we face in the forthcoming election is either to keep things as they are, or make a radical departure from the old ways. To find a better way of doing things or keep repeating the mistakes of the past. To fix the problems or keep compounding them.

12. It is with all these in mind, and taking account of the challenges that I have outlined, that I have decided to answer the call of teeming youth who have asked me to run for President. Accordingly, I hereby announce my intention to run for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the coming General Elections in 2019 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I do so with the firm conviction that I have what it takes to secure inclusive growth for Nigeria and Nigerians.

13. My Plan for Nigeria has inclusion in all aspects of the country’s affairs as a central pillar. Every citizen has the inalienable right to feel a sense of belonging, no matter their background or creed, or what part of the country they come from. No matter who you voted for or what your convictions are, government must work for you.

14. Your generation does not deserve to live in the poverty capital of the world. It is no longer an issue of how we got here, but how do we get out of this situation? I promise you that I will lead the fight and employ every God-given resource available to us in turning things around. I am determined to grow Nigeria out of poverty. We will stimulate the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as one of the ways of energising the economy and to create wealth for our people, especially the youth.

15. I want to see the youth play major roles at all levels, not only in government but also in the private sector and indeed in every area of Nigerian life. This will be a government driven by youthful energy, innovation and a pioneering entrepreneurial spirit. Nigerian youth will be given all the opportunities to realise their potential to the full within a national framework that guarantees inclusiveness. For youth who have ideas and capacity, we will make sure that there is funding for their ventures; and we shall build on the Made in Nigeria legislation as part of our job creation drive.

16. My plan is to secure Nigeria by redesigning our national security architecture, while adequately equipping our security agencies to fulfil their primary role of protecting lives and property.

17. I will address our infrastructural deficit through aggressive financing initiatives including mutually beneficial PPP arrangements, regular floating of bonds and other financial instruments, which will ensure stable, adequate and reliable funding to see to the completion of core projects especially road, rail and power.

18. My plan is to protect all Nigerians and defend their constitutional rights and freedoms. I will stand for and uphold at all times the principle of the rule of law, which is the bedrock of democratic governance.

19. Ours will not be a selective fight against corruption. The emphasis will be on strengthening institutions, with a particular focus on deterrence. We cannot afford to compromise our institutions with proxy wars against perceived political opponents. We see the fight against corruption as crucial to Nigeria’s economic development.

20. I offer leadership driven by empathy. Where leaders are responsive to the citizens. Where they know that government cares. We will not be indifferent or turn a blind eye to the real concerns of our people. Every single Nigerian life matters.

21. For me, the leadership we deserve is one that will be a source of pride to all Nigerians, one that will be respected and admired in Africa and around the world. It should be a leadership that can hold its own and stand tall anywhere in the world. That is the type of leadership I offer.

22. As a former two-term Governor and currently President of the Senate by the grace of God, I believe I possess a unique blend of executive and legislative experience to push for and implement reforms that will deliver real improvements in the daily lives of our people. I know what it takes to create jobs and grow the economy. I can make the tough decisions when it matters. I will spearhead a new agenda that can transform the lives of ordinary Nigerians in real terms.

23. Believe me when I say that it will not be business as usual. This will be a dynamic government of action that will pursue the growth of Nigeria with doggedness, determination and conviction. I will lead a result-driven administration. We shall set targets with clear timelines to ensure that anticipated deliverables are met. You can benchmark us and hold us accountable. In short, I assure you that I will deliver on all promises. What I envision is a new chapter in governance in this country. We will be driven by what is best for Nigerians.

25. I have deliberately chosen the opportunity of being here with you, my Number One constituency who I see as the future of our great country, to make my intention known. I believe the Nigerian youth are critical to rebuilding and growing the economy, and restoring our national pride.

26. I therefore ask you and all well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with me in this noble cause.

My brothers, My sisters, Let’s Grow Nigeria Together.

God bless you all.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON.

Politics / Good Leaders Shouldn’t Intimidate People To Achieve Results — Makarfi by Legitinfobase(m): 5:04am On Aug 31, 2018
former caretaker committee chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, speaks on national issues, in this interview with GODWIN ISENYO

What is your reaction to the gale of defections from the All Progressives Congress to your party, the Peoples Democratic Party?
I predicted these defections many months ago. When we were going through difficulties and people were losing hopes, and I was asked a similar question as far back as last year, my reply was that the time for defection from the APC and other parties to the PDP was coming and it happened. I predicted it correctly and I’m not surprised. I feel happy about it. It is also not the end of it (defection). We have seen the first wave and we expect more defections to follow, because of the reaction of the APC and its government. Some (defectors) will bide their time and do it at a later day. It happened to us in the PDP; it is a matter of time, the APC will also feel the heat.
Personally, I am happy that we are getting returnees back and getting new party members, especially new people that have never been in the PDP before and the party should be prepared for a lot more to come in. Of course, every positive thing comes with challenges. The challenge will be integrating all the party men and women (the returnees and those they met in the party). But I am equally happy that the National Working Committee of the party has set up machinery, which has been working day and night to bring a smooth integration and harmonisation of interests of party men and women in states that are more heavily affected by the defection. That is how politics is played —constructive engagement, which is still going on and I believe at the end of the day, people will accommodate one another in the overall interest of the party. It is a challenge but challenges are there to be overcome. I am confident that the national leadership of the party is up to the task to see to the integration.
A former governor of Kano State and one of the presidential aspirants in your party, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, said for the PDP to win the 2019 presidency, it should pick its presidential candidate from Katsina, Kano or Kaduna. What is your take?
That’s his personal view. One can only try to imagine what his reasons could have been. I have not discussed it with him. Maybe his thinking could have been the high voter registration and turnout in most cases in those areas. But that is not the position of the party. The position of the party is that the Presidency is zoned to the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. So, it is open to 19 northern states and the FCT aspirants from the zone. So, whoever the party men and women find suitable from the zone as their presidential candidate, we will support him. It happened before where we found a presidential candidate who came from a small state and he was widely accepted; we supported him. So, Kwankwaso is expressing his personal opinion. It should not be misconstrued to mean that it is a right that is only exclusively preserved for certain states. I don’t think he could have meant that, but for me, the position of the party is very clear — that it is open to the 19 northern states and the FCT.
There are many presidential aspirants in the PDP and recently the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin, was talking about bringing all aspirants to a roundtable to discuss the possibility of a consensus candidate. What is your reaction?
You don’t rule out anything in politics. First, I have not read that statement of the BoT chairman. I have not even discussed it with him. Even if he made the statement, politics requires discussion and dialogue. Such dialogue and discussion may produce what the BoT chairman is alleged to have said.
It may also just reduce the people in the field, and in my going round, I had also propagated the need for us to come together to talk to one another and see how we can bring unity among all of us because we are stronger if we are united but if divided, we will become quite weak and that is something that we must avoid.
How we will get there, I can’t say. There are many ways we can get there. I am not asking or forcing anyone to pull out of the race. But I am, of course, for dialogue among ourselves and other leaders and to see how, irrespective of who emerges the candidate, all others would rally around the eventual candidate to work as one. It is only after dialogue and discussions that that would be determined. Interests can be discussed and balanced and then ultimately how we go forward is decided. If all of us have to do primaries, let’s go with the understanding that we will all work together for the eventual winner. So, it is good to talk; I will be prepared to participate in any discussion that will bring unity among us. I can’t say what I will or will not do at this particular stage, but I have not been summoned for any particular meeting. Maybe it is just an idea that the BoT chairman is saying out loud for others to hear, but politics is full of a lot of things, and in the next few days, we will see what will happen.
How would you react to the assertion that the selection or election among the presidential aspirants will destroy the party ahead of the 2019 presidency based on interests?
When I was answering a similar question in relation to what the BoT chairman said, I did say it is good to talk and encourage dialogue before the D-Day to ensure that there is unity among all party men and women. We have done that before. We should continue to discuss among ourselves. This way, we can reduce the trouble. The fact that we are talking and, we are in constant dialogue will make it easier, fair and transparent. If you look at the (PDP) primaries conducted in Ekiti and Osun, nobody will say they were not free, fair and transparent. In Osun, look at the margin between the winner and the runner-up. It is only in a free and fair contest you get such margin. The party is living up to its worth by ensuring there is a level playing field for a credible primary. So, I don’t foresee any problem. At the end of the day, we will have a single candidate through a democratic way and that candidate will generally be acceptable to all of us.
Do you want a contest or you want to settle for a consensus arrangement?
I am open to either. It is not what I want but what is achievable. We should subject ourselves to anyone that is widely acceptable to all of us.
You said harmonisation and integration of defectors is ongoing. How has it been, especially as some of them have already joined the presidential race?
You see, it depends on the way you look at this particular issue. What I have been made to understand, which is the true position of the party because I discussed with the committee on the harmonisation and I discussed with the party leadership, is that, where you have a sitting governor coming into the party with all his apparatus of government, certain parameters of integration were agreed upon to do with the state. It’s not something to do with the nation. Where he is a senator, certain parameters to do with his senatorial zone were agreed upon or state assembly or even House of Representatives. But I think some are misinterpreting this to be wider than what the intended purpose is.
For example, if you are in the House of Representatives looking for (a seat in the) Senate, it does not apply to your ambition for Senate, because it relates to your current position. It does not relate to any other position that you are looking for beyond your current position. This is worth discussing and ironing out issues with all those involved. Even here in Kaduna, later today, I have called for a meeting of key leaders of the party that are around so that we can see how politically we can bring about a hitch-free integration of returnees into the party without causing any unnecessary disruption that can be counterproductive.
What would you do if you were not picked as the party’s candidate for the 2019 election?
It is not the first time that I have failed to realise this ambition. Whatever is the outcome, I will accept it in good faith — whether I emerge as the candidate or not. Anyway, I can contribute to the success of the party, what I can do, I will do. But the question is, will I leave the party and go to another party? I have said repeatedly that if I leave the PDP, I will politically go into semi-retirement. By semi-retirement, it means that you won’t find me contesting for elective office. I may still be a political player, playing whatever role that I could play but at my age, if I don’t get nominated now, you can imagine what my age will be at another chance.
I don’t belong to those who think you should continue to seek electoral office irrespective of your age. What is the essence of the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Act in that case? It would defeat that purpose. And the President just signed it into law; beyond just signing the law, we should take every step to actualise laws that are good for our country. So, definitely, you may find me playing not the active politics I am playing now, but definitely not leaving the party that I am in. If I say I am leaving politics, I am leaving it for good. I won’t move to another party.
What is your view on the election in Taraba State and the suspended one in Rivers?
I spoke about it when I went to inaugurate a project in Rivers State, where Governor (Nyesom) Wike has been under continuous siege, intimidation and harassment by the Federal Government. It is uncalled for and this must stop. The election in Taraba went on fine, but in Rivers, look at the disruption with the connivance of the security agencies involved. And we all know who in the Federal Government is responsible for this crisis in Rivers State. I watched a video of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of Rivers; where he said the security agents responsible for the crisis were not those engaged to secure the election process. If it is true, according to the REC, that certain individuals were going round polling units with platoons of security men unchallenged, then the President should do something because that is injurious to our democracy. Nobody should be beyond being cautioned. The person in the Federal Government that is consistently causing security breaches and crisis in Rivers must be cautioned. The government knows him; we all know him. The President holds it as a responsibility to this nation; that individual should be cautioned; otherwise, the havoc he can cause to our democracy and to our country could be disastrous. The Independent National Electoral Commission did the right thing by suspending the election. But beyond that, correction should be done. The security agencies must not allow themselves to be used by an interested party in the election to hijack the political process, whether in Rivers or any part of this country. But the siege on the people and government of Rivers must stop.
One of the allegations against this government is the selective fight against corruption. How will you fight the war against corruption if you are elected president?
Fighting the corruption of the past is important but stopping the ongoing corruption is a lot more important. The only way to do it is a national conference on corruption. The way I would approach it is a national conference on corruption on how to deal with all facets of corruption.
Many people say you appear to be too soft to handle Nigeria. How do you respond to this?
On the issue of being soft, I was frailer as a governor but we handled Kaduna very well. You can achieve good results in governance or be a good leader without necessarily intimidating or insulting anybody but by ruling based on justice, fairness and equity. That is what can make any man strong. If you are guided by these principles, you will be a strong man and people will give you all the necessary support you need to succeed. No matter how strong you are, if you are unjust or unfair, you will become weak. I have been tested and my seemingly frail body did not give way. I assure you that if you follow me on campaign, you will collapse. I can do with an hour or two of sleep a day, and with that kind of capacity, I am good to go.

Politics / Why Is African history forged by Legitinfobase(m): 3:25pm On Aug 29, 2018
You have to know that the opponent kills you intellectually, they kill you morally, before they kill you physically. But this is how entire groups have been supressed. Your existence as a moral being is denied, your existence as a cultural being is denied. They close the eyes, one does not see the obvious. They count on your insecurities, on your alienation, on conditioning, on reflexes of subordination and many factors of this sort. And if we cannot set ourselves free from such a situation by our own means, there is no salvation (…) They lead and we face the most violent fight. More violent even than the fights that led to the extinction of some species. And it is precisely crucial that your intellectual sagacity goes that far” Cheikh Anta Diop, Niamey conference, 1984.

For every black woman or man who gets to know their true history, it’s normal for them to be flabbergastered, shocked to discover who they really are. The astonishingEgyptian civilization, Carthaginian civilization, Niger Bend empires or theShona civilization in Zimbabwe, Benin kingdom or Kongo empire, Swahili orAshanti civilization, Imperial Moroccoand Moorish civilization in Spain, black civilizations of pre-colombian America or first Asian civilizations, etc. We move from surprises to surprises, and it is obvious to wonder why… in what name we have been deprived from the knowledge of such glorious past. Why did Westerners (since it is about them) stole our memory and our ancestors?
It is important to know that the forgery of African history started on the occasion of the European slave trade. When Europeans arrived in Africa to start their 400-year-terrorist actions, they already knew Africans very well. For 781 years, we had occupied Spain, Portugal, Sicily through the Black Berbers of Maghreb also knwon as Moors or Saracens. And our Ancestors, with the Arabs, built the most important civilization in Europe which was, by then, entangled into poverty and Middle-Age retardation.

Ogbizi disclosed that the suspects were arrested at City Gobal Hotel in Aba at about 2 am.
A statement by the state police command stated that the suspects were nabbed following a distress call from the manger of the hotel.
The statement added that the hotel manger alleged that the suspects were seen kissing one another at the hotel bar by an employee, who reported the incident to the management .
It was further gathered that the manger went to one of the hotel rooms , where two of the suspects had checked in earlier and discovered that they were six in the room , romancing and kissing one anothers.
According to the police report , the suspects were interrogated and it was discovered that they were members of a gang who came into Abia from nearby states to practise the unnatural act in the hotel room .
The suspects, however , denied committing the crime , saying that they were in Aba for the birthday party of one of their friends, Ndubuisi, adding that their families were not aware that they were arrested .
One of them , Chidera, who claimed to be an undergraduate from the Imo State University, Owerri, said they were all in one room because they were told that the category of room they asked for was not available .
He said , “I arrived the hotel at about 6 pm and I asked my friend to book for a room for me. The hotel management said we should pay N 5 ,000 for a room and we could afford it . So, we decided to manage that one room .
“ After drinking at the hotel bar , we went to the room to change our clothes . It was at that time that we heard a knock on the door and when we opened the door , the manager started asking why we were six in the room.
“ After explaining to him, he said they don’ t allow more that three persons in a room and that was how he accused us of practising homosexuality in the room. There was nothing like kissing or making love in the room and we are not gays . ”
Another suspect , Ndubuisi , who claimed to be a hair stylist , also stated that he only invited his friends for his birthday party and lodged them in the hotel , adding that they did not indulge in any homosexual act.
“ I invited my friends for my birthday and I wanted to pay for two rooms but we couldn ’ t because the rooms were filled up , that was why we were in one room ,” he said .
The Commissioner of Police , however , said the hotel management would bring his evidence against the suspects , who, he said , would be charged to court .

Politics / Makarfi Warns: Defectors Can ‘steal’ PDP From Us by Legitinfobase(m): 11:30am On Aug 04, 2018
Markarfi said: “Everybody is welcome but we must be careful so we don’t give the impression that it doesn’t pay to be loyal. We must not create a situation whereby you have a home and you have a visitor and when the visitor comes, you give him a guest room to stay, then the next day, he wants the master’s bedroom and then the next day, you leave the home for him...does that happen?”

A former governor of Kaduna State and presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in next year’s election, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has warned the leadership of his party on the manner of accommodating and integrating those that recently defected to the party in order to avoid an implosion.
Makarfi spoke yesterday in Lokoja when he met leaders and stakeholders of the PDP in Kogi State to solicit their support for his presidential aspiration. He said the leadership must be wary of the mistake made when the PDP was handed over to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
Makarfi said: “Everybody is welcome but we must be careful so we don’t give the impression that it doesn’t pay to be loyal. We must not create a situation whereby you have a home and you have a visitor and when the visitor comes, you give him a guest room to stay, then the next day, he wants the master’s bedroom and then the next day, you leave the home for him...does that happen?”
“PDP must never allow that kind of thing to happen. Let them come in and enjoy the privileges but you must know what to give and what not to give,” Makarfi said.
According to him, the PDP must get it right in choosing its presidential flag bearer and other candidates for the 2019 elections, adding, “It will be a great disaster not only for the PDP but entire Nigeria if we make that mistake.”
Responding, the PDP chairman in the state, Engr. Sam Uhotu, assured Makarfi of support, saying the party would have been buried were it not for the efforts of the senator who came to rescue it.

Towards the 2019 General Elections. “Election As Revolution” being text of a communique issued after a consultative meeting of Presidential Aspirants on Tuesday 31st July 2018.
OUR RESOLVE AND DECISIONS
In the light of the foregoing and as a response to the collective yearnings and aspirations of our people; we have resolved as follows:
1: Recognising that at the core of our existential challenges as a people and nation is the failure of leadership
2: We affirm, that as the new face of visionary leadership for our country, we are collectively stepping into the fray, to fill the leadership vacuum, and offer leadership at this momentous juncture in our history;
3: We affirm that collectively, we are committed to the process of building a United Front to mobilize our people to lead the change we desire during the 2019 general elections;
4: We understand that Unity is a process, and not an event, and as such, we undertake to effect necessary steps towards consolidating on the process of building a united front based on shared vision and ideas;
5: Towards this end, we are in agreement that internal party processes towards producing eventual party candidates and flag bearers should be allowed to reach its logical conclusion;
6: Furthermore, we are committed to step up the process of building a united front once party candidates have emerged; and shall continually hold consultations among ourselves and broker conversations with our parties towards ensuring that we are able to present a United Front towards the 2019 general elections;
7: Finally, we know that the 2019 general elections will be a historically decisive one; we know that the conditions are ripening for an electoral process with outcome that can be revolutionarily transformative.
8: We embrace this process of the 2019 election as a revolution.
We represent the future of our country, a future which begins now; and we know it.

TV/Movies / Why Pay TV Prices Are Rising Globally by Legitinfobase(m): 9:15am On Jul 29, 2018
Who do you think pays the eye-watering salaries earned by players in England’s Premier League, the Spanish LaLiga or Italian Serie A? It is not the clubs, but fans in those countries and around the world. Wondering how? Here is it.

DSTV
The Premier League, the world’s favourite football league, for example, is broadcast in 212 countries to an estimated 4.7billion people.
The 2016/17 season was the first in the current three-year broadcasting deal, which gives the Premier League £8.3billion in television rights, with £5.41billion of that coming from two UK broadcasters, Sky and BT.
It means clubs have larger sums to spend on players, who are earning bigger wages, and are less dependent match day income. To cover the cost of the sum paid for the deal with the Premier League, Sky and BT jacked up prices by about10% in 2016, meaning that the cost to the subscriber went up.
The two broadcasters were simply responding to the 71% jump over what was paid for the previous television deal. So, whatever commercial progress the clubs are making is at a cost, which is eventually passed on to fans around the world by television companies broadcasting matches of the Premier League everywhere in the world.
Being a red-hot property, a jewel in the Pay TV crown, rights to air Premier League matches are unlikely to attract lower sums when next they are up for renewal. In fact, they will attract higher sums. Live sport, in general, is hot, hot property.
The cut-throat competition for the acquisition of rights to broadcast or redistribute live sport content is unsurprisingly accompanied by stratospheric hikes prices demanded by content owners. It is the same for content in other genres- movies, general entertainment, documentaries, kiddies’ content et al.
Being part of the global Pay TV landscape, operators in Nigeria are similarly victims of tough negotiations and astronomical content prices as operators in Europe, the US and Asia.
A big portion of the monthly subscription the consumer pays is comprises costs that Pay TV companies, which are essentially distributors or vendors, are required to pay to content creators or those that package Pay TV channels.
It means that for every household receiving that package, whether or not anyone in the household watches the channel, Pay TV providers pay a fee.
Content rebroadcast agreements usually contain clear and stringent rules on how content owners want their television shows and channels should be sold to viewers.
Content owners determine, for example, what packages can contain their channels. With content costs almost always denominated in the US dollar, Euro and the British pound, it is not possible for Pay TV subscription in Nigeria to remain the same for long, especially with the volatility of the exchange rate of the Naira to the aforementioned international currencies.
Even then, Pay TV prices in Nigeria are not anywhere near the steepest in the world as many often suggest. A look at the recent price adjustments made by MultiChoice on its DStv platform provides a confirmation. Under the company’s new price regime, the DStv Premium package, which currently costs N14, 700 will from 1 August rise to N15, 800.
Price of the DStv Compact Plus package has also been slightly bumped up from to N10, 650 from N9, 900. The Compact package, which currently costs N6, 500, will rise to N6, 800.
Prices of the Family and Access packages will equally go up to N4, 000 and N2, 000 respectively from the N3, 800 and N1, 900 currently being paid. Compared to the company’s new rates in Ghana, MultiChoice subscribers in Nigeria can have few complaints. The West African country’s Premium subscribers will henceforth pay GHµ 365 (N27, 360.75), while those on Compact plus will pay GHµ 245 (N18, 365.44). Compact and Family subscribers in Ghana will pay GHµ 149 (N11, 169.18) and GHµ 85 (N6, 961.60) respectively. South African subscribers of the company, erroneously viewed as sacred cows, will pay R809 (N21, 728.47) for Premium, R509 (N13, 670) for Compact Plus, R385 (N10, 340.49) for Compact, R249 (N6, 687.75) for Family and R99 (N2, 656.98) for Access respectively.
Similarly in Europe and the Americas, Pay TV subscribers pay more than Nigerians. In the US, Pay TV operator, Direct TV’s two biggest packages cost $110 (N38, 710) and $60 (N21, 660) respectively. For its third biggest package, Xtra, Direct TV charges $55 (N19, 855). Its other packages cost $40 (N14, 440), $45 (N16, 245) and $35 (N12, 635). United Kingdom’s premier operator, Sky TV, charges £79.95 (N38, 167.33) for its fullest package and £47.50 (N22, 572.97) for that next to it. The third package attracts £40 (N19, 008.82), while the three below it cost £30 (N14, 256.61), £25 (N11, 731.54) and £20 (N9, 504.41) respectively.
Contrary to the widespread belief that Pay TV prices around the world are as stable as rock in a windstorm, the fact is they rise yearly. Analysts reckon that programming costs have risen by eight to 10 percent in each of the past four years-driven by competition for content and other economic conditions, reducing Pay TV operators’ margins and compelling them to keep hike prices to remain afloat. Competition has been made fiercer by the rise of streaming services, which are also in the game for compelling programming, offering another outlet to content owners. When this is added to global economic conditions, prices are unlikely to stay the same.
US website, consumerreports.org, also reported that most US Pay TV operators hiked their prices in 2018, with some introducing hidden fees, with operators blaming the development on the rise in costs paid for programming.
Industry watchers also posit that addition of new features and functions to services, leading to improved subscriber experience, also contributes to the rise in Pay TV prices.
Except the astronomical programming costs miraculously slide-appreciably, too-there is no chance of Pay TV prices remaining the same for a long time
