Ohanaeze faction knocks Obi over endorsement of protest Guardian NigeriaJul 31, 2024 5:04 AM Peter Obi Peter Obi • Igbo elders: We’re not protesting, mourning our leaders’ passing • Ohanaeze skips Igbo Day celebration to honour Iwuanyanwu A faction of the apex pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has carpeted the endorsement of August 1-10 planned hunger protests in Nigeria by the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi. In a statement on Tuesday by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, entitled: ‘Nationwide Protests: Obi’s Support Puts Ndigbo in Danger,’ the group said Obi’s decision to support the protests, especially in the presence of Governor Alex Otti, has put the Ndigbo at risk, “and has the potential to jeopardise the safety and investments of our people across the country.” It added: “While Obi has the constitutional right to express his support for the protests, his actions have far-reaching implications that cannot be ignored. By aligning himself with the protests against President Tinubu, Obi has inadvertently sent a message that the leaders of the LP are united in their stance against the current administration. This move is not only an affront to Ndigbo, but also puts our community in a vulnerable position. “Obi’s endorsement goes against the earlier decisions of Ndigbo to abstain from participating in the protests. We have concerns about the potential hijacking of the protests by criminal elements, in view of the security challenges facing the Southeast region. Therefore, Ohanaeze holds Obi responsible for any loss of life or investments belonging to Igbo in the North and Southwest during the protests.” Also, the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum has distanced itself from the proposed protest, stating that the Southeast will not participate in any demonstration. During a press briefing in Abuja, Chief (Dr.) Simon Okeke and Prof. Charles Nwekeakwu, Chairman and Secretary of the Forum, respectively, urged all Nigerians to work towards a prosperous, just, and equitable society. They emphasised that the Igbo people are mourning the loss of their illustrious sons and leaders, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Ferdinand Agu, and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, and will not be distracted by the proposed national protest. Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has announced it is skipping this year’s Igbo Day celebration in honour of its late President-General, Iwuanyanwu. Ohanaeze observes September 29 each year as Igbo day. Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Okey Emuchay, who disclosed the cancellation after an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the organisation and opening of register for the late elder statesman at Ohanaeze’s national secretariat, Enugu, explained that the decision was part of efforts to honour and respect Iwuanyanwu. Emuchay, who signed the register on behalf of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, called on its chapters in Nigeria and abroad to open condolence registers for the late icon. Iwuanyanwu died last week after a brief illness. |

BREAKING: Tinubu directs NNPC to sell crude to Dangote Refinery in Naira President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to sell crude to Dangote Refinery and other upcoming refineries in Naira. The special adviser to the president on information and publicity, Bayo Onanuga, made this known in a post via his official X handle on Monday, July 29. Recall on July 18, Farouk Ahmed, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) said local refineries, including the Dangote refinery, produce inferior products compared to the ones imported into the country. Onanuga, who announced President Tinubu’s directive, stated that the move, which is to ensure the stability of the pump price of refined fuel and the dollar-Naira exchange rate, was adopted by the Federal Executive Council today. He said: “To ensure the stability of the pump price of refined fuel and the dollar-Naira exchange rate, the Federal Executive Council today adopted a proposal by President Tinubu to sell crude to Dangote Refinery and other upcoming refineries in Naira. “Dangote Refinery at the moment requires 15 cargoes of crude, at a cost of $13.5 billion yearly. NNPC has committed to supply four. “But the FEC has approved that the 450,000 barrels meant for domestic consumption be offered in Naira to Nigerian refineries, using the Dangote refinery as a pilot. The exchange rate will be fixed for the duration of this transaction. “Afreximbank and other settlement banks in Nigeria will facilitate the trade between Dangote and NNPC Limited. The game-changing intervention will eliminate the need for international letters of credit. Hardship: Nigerian students suspend planned nationwide protest, cite reasons WithinnigeriaJul 27, 2024 7:17 PM ...embrace dialogue with government Joint national leadership made consultations with stakeholders, government officials and well-meaning Nigerians Say engagements and consultations would continue with the Government, Stakeholders The leadership of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), and the National Association Nigerian of College of Education Students (NANCES) on Saturday suspended their planned protest. WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that the trio had earlier declared National Day of Protest for Nigerian Students starting from Monday, July 29th, 2024, over the failure of the Federal Government to address the hardships being faced by Nigerian students amidst the current economic crisis. However, in a new swift, the students’ leadership have suspended and postponed the planned protest. The latest decision was conveyed in a statement on Saturday and jointly signed by Comrade Obaji Marshal National President, NAUS; Amb. Shuaib Ishaka Yahaya, Senate President, NAUS; Comrade Ridwan Opeyemi Munirudeen, National President, NAPS; Comrade Adeniji Boluwaji Temitope, Senate President, NAPS; Amb. Comrade Eegunjobi Samuel Oluwaseun National President, NANCES; and Sen. Kur Isaac Ushahemba, Senate President, NANCES. Citing reason for the postponement, the students’ body said the Joint national leadership have made consultations with stakeholders, government officials and well-meaning Nigerians, adding that the consultations offered assurances of quick action to their demands. Furthermore, the students’ body noted that due to the proposed national protest in August by several bodies and with the concerns expressed by security agencies from their consultations, it will be dangerous to embark on protest in such critical moment. The statement reads partly: “You will recall that a few days ago, the Joint National leadership , informed the public of our decision to embark on an organised protest and peaceful demonstration, aimed at drawing the attention of the government to the economic hardship and high/rising cost of living in the country, which is most felt by Students and youths of the country. “We are aware of our rights as enshrined in the 1999 constitution (as amended), and have chosen to proceed towards exercising them very shortly. “The present economic quagmire occasioned by the rising cost of living, hike in cost of commodities , hike in petroleum price, hike in electricity tarriff, insecurity, poor funding of our institutions which presently affects more than 80% of the population in the country, is felt most by young Nigerians studying for various academic qualifications across tertiary institutions.” “Furthermore, the inability of federal, state and local governments to provide adequate immediate and long-term palliatives, especially for Nigerian Students, to cushion the effect of the high cost of living, is rather disappointing and also raises the alarm of the student movement in the country, of a seeming lack of initiatives and ideas on the most effective approach to sustainable economic recovery and growth.” “However, the Joint national leadership has been inundated with calls which have led to marathon consultations with stakeholders, government officials and well-meaning Nigerians on the issue of our proposed protest action. “It will also interest you to know that these consultations have offered assurances of quick action to the demands made: “Similarly, the Joint Leadership takes into cognizance of the fact that there is a planned national protest in August, and with the concerns expressed by security agencies from consultations, it will be Dangerous Leading a Protest in a Critical Moment like this, as it can be hijacked and since the Joint Leadership is the only known body protesting all Damages might fall on us, the National Joint Leadership hereby postpones its planned protest. “This postponement also comes with a dissociation of the Associations with the 10days Protest being organised, with a call for all the Tertiary To Stay Away From The Protest. “For emphasis, the joint Leadership calls off its protest, and postpones it till further notice, while engagements and consultations would continue with the Government, Stakeholders and the Association.

“Tinubu Can’t Do It”: APC Reacts to 1 Demand of Hunger Protest Organisers thetalk.ngJul 27, 2024 10:44 AM The APC has said that the demand of the planned hunger protests’ organisers that President Bola Tinubu should scrap the 1999 constitution cannot be met Ajibola Bashiru, the APC national secretary, said that President Tinubu swore to protect the constitution and that he alone According to Bashiru, it was even the 1999 constitution that allowed the protest organisers to stage agitation and changing it will require the efforts of the National and State Assemblies FCT, Abuja – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the hunger protest organisers’ demand that President Bola Tinubu scrap the 1999 constitution. According to APC, after its meeting with state chairmen across the country on Friday, July 26, the organisers’ demand is a “tall order” that President Tinubu cannot carry out. The ruling APC has rejected the demand of the hunger protests organisers that President Bola Tinubu should scrap the 1999 constitution, saying that the president can't do it alone. APC gives reasons why Tinubu can’t scrap the 1999 Constitution Photo Credit: @officialABATSource: Twitter Hunger protest: APC debates organisers’ demands The party also discussed the pros and cons of the proposed agitation and other demands of the organisers. The APC then discussed changing the constitution, adding that it has been going on for two years. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos state, and other statesmen recently called for a new constitution for the country However, the APC insists that President Tinubu alone cannot dump the 1999 Constitution. The party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, said the demand is “mission impossible”. Basiru stated that the President is sworn to protect the Constitution and cannot unilaterally scrap it. The APC also noted that the Constitution can only be amended through a rigorous process involving the National Assembly and State Assemblies. Hunger protest: APC rejects scrapping of Senate The ruling party frowned at the demand to sack the Senate, leaving only the House of Representatives. Basiru described this demand as a contradiction, stating that it requires only an amendment, not a total discarding of the Constitution. The APC urged protesters to channel their energy into more productive means rather than demanding the impossible. His statement reads in part: “Who will scrap the 1999 Constitution? Is it a president who is elected and sworn to oppose it? Even the right of a protester to protest is predicated on their rights under the 1999 Constitution.” Source: TheTalk.NG
