Customs seizes seven containers of machetes, cutlasses, others from China tribuneonlineng.comJul 19, 2024 12:40 PM The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Friday said that its officers intercepted seven containers containing 12,000 pieces of cutlass and machete; 4,129 packages of frozen poultry products; 368 jumbo bales of used second-hand clothing; and expired pharmaceutical imported from China, India, and Turkiya. Addressing the media on Friday in Lagos, the Customs Area Controller of Apapa Port, Controller Babatunde Olomu said that the duty paid value (DPV) of these seized items stood at N292,244,857.00. According to Controller Olomu, “As part of the Comptroller-General of Customs policy thrust of zero tolerance for smuggling, the Apapa Command of Nigeria Customs Service has successfully intercepted seven (7) containers that fall short of the import prohibition guidelines from entering the country. “On Thursday, 17 July 2024, the command seized 2x40ft containers carrying twelve thousand (12,000) pieces of cutlass and machete; 2x40ft carrying four thousand, one hundred and twenty-nine (4,129) packages of frozen poultry products; 1x40ft container carrying three hundred and sixty-eight (368) jumbo bales of used second-hand clothing; and 1x40ft container of expired pharmaceutical. “The duty paid value (DPV) of these seized items stood at two hundred and ninety-two million, two hundred and forty-four thousand, eight hundred and fifty-seven naira (292,244,857.00). “It is pertinent to note that this type of importation is against schedule 3 of the revised import prohibition list of the Common External Tariff (CET) and violates section 233 of the Nigeria Customs Act 2023. “These seizures were made following a combination of intelligence and diligent enforcement in ensuring that no consignment exits Apapa Port or any terminal under the command without undergoing proper examination. “As a working principle, I have reiterated that this command will continually sustain and improve on trade facilitation and maximum revenue collection without compromising the enforcement of our extant laws as they pertain to the false declaration, concealment, under declaration and undervaluation. “We are also enforcing the requirements for sister regulatory agencies like NAFDAC in the case of food and drugs and strict implementation of the end user certificate rules for products that require it from relevant authorities like the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). “Let me use this opportunity to reiterate the earlier warning given by the CGC on the smuggling of prohibited items and restate that this command will keep ensuring that only consignments that meet the integrity test of compliance will be allowed to go through this port either as import or export cargoes. “We are going to hand over these seizures to the appropriate agencies for further investigation and regulatory action.” The seized expired pharmaceuticals were later handed over to officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Planned Protest: Youths Vow To Defend South-West Against External Forces LeadershipJul 19, 2024 12:19 PM The Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association (YYSA), has vowed to defend the Southwest region and its heritage against all external forces that may threaten the peace, unity and development in the region. YYSA gave the assurance following the planned protest against hardship in the country by some groups scheduled to hold in August. National President of YYSA, Olalekan Hammed and the National Secretary, Olawale Ajao in a statement on Friday in Ibadan, said it had uncovered secret plans by some unscrupulous elements to take advantage of the intending nationwide protest against hardship to perpetrate evils. According to the youths, there is a plan by the people to set major economic development facilities ablaze in the Southwest. “We have uncovered some secret plans by unscrupulous elements to take advantage of the intending nationwide protest against hardship to perpetrate evils by setting ablaze all our major economic development facilities in Southwest. “Besides that, they have as well mapped out some strategic areas to ensure that they navigate easily to palaces menacingly and burn them to ashes”, the youths alleged. They added that local government secretariats were also part of the public properties targeted for destruction by the people. “Moreover, it is our prerogative to defend Southwest region and heritage against all external forces that may be threat to peace, unity and development. “For this reason, we hereby unequivocally declare that the scheduled mass protest has been put on hold in order to secure and protect Yoruba land from enemies of progress disguising as students and activists to put us into peril socially and economically”, they said. Meanwhile, the Yoruba group commended the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for ensuring that justice prevailed for all tiers of government to operate as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution. “They are as well known as the three levels of government through which legislative lists were shared as follows; exclusively legislative list, concurrent legislative list and residual list. “Although, the state governments that constitutionally share some powers in the residual legislative list with local governments have dominated everything, while the constitutionally recognised third tier of government has become castrated”, the youths added. While noting that genuine development starts from the grassroot at the local government level where people are engaging mostly in primary activities such as farming, fishing, craft, hunting, petty trading and others, the YYSA said, “Essentially, agriculture products and food items are being transported to cities after successful harvest in rural areas under local administrations.’ It further explained that the issue of security can best be tackled at local level where suspicious persons can easily be identified.

Notorious Armed Robber Nabbed In Ibadan After Motorcycle Theft In Nsukka Tori NewsJul 17, 2024 6:03 PM The suspect, who identified himself as Emeka Sunday from Enugu-Ezike, allegedly snatched a motorcycle at gunpoint from Mr Stephen Amadi in Lejja, Nsukka on April 19th. Emeka Sunday A suspected armed robber believed to be responsible for a series of crimes in the Nsukka area of Enugu State, including motorcycle snatching, sexual assault, and kidnapping, has been apprehended in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. The suspect, who identified himself as Emeka Sunday from Enugu-Ezike, allegedly snatched a motorcycle at gunpoint from Mr Stephen Amadi in Lejja, Nsukka on April 19th. In an interview with newsmen, Amadi claimed that on April 18th, the suspect had asked to be given a ride home and then, halfway through the journey, pulled a gun on him (Amadi) and robbed him of the motorcycle. Amadi reported the incident to the police in Nsukka, but attempts to track down the suspect using the phone number he had exchanged proved futile, as he had blocked all calls related to the stolen motorcycle. However, a fortuitous turn of events led to the suspect’s downfall. Amadi’s sister, who was serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ibadan, managed to befriend the suspect on Facebook. The suspect, likely believing he had found another potential victim, invited the woman to meet him at a hotel in Ibadan. Upon receiving this information, the woman promptly contacted the police at the Eleyele Police Headquarters in Ibadan. The police then set up an ambush at the hotel, and when the suspect emerged, they swiftly apprehended him. During an interrogation, the suspect confessed to the motorcycle theft and other crimes, though the claims about his identity and hometown are yet to be verified. He also admitted to selling the stolen motorcycle for a meager price of 100,000 naira. Meanwhile, the challenge now lies in the jurisdictional issue, as the initial crime was committed within the Enugu State Police Command’s jurisdiction. The Oyo State Police Command, which successfully arrested the suspect, is unable to prosecute the case, as the original crime occurred outside of their jurisdiction. When Vanguard further placed a call to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, to get an update on the case, he said he was out of the office and that he could not provide any information to that effect. Similarly, this correspondent attempted to call the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) in charge of the arrest, but the line made available could not be reached. The Ogbede Divisional Police in Enugu State, where the case was initially reported, have so far shown little interest in traveling to Ibadan to take custody of the suspect. Vanguard comfirmed that they are reportedly demanding additional logistical support from the complainants before they can make the trip. Consequently, the police headquarters at Eleyele, threatened to release the suspect if the Enugu State authorities do not make arrangements to transfer him by at a stipulated time.

The monthly income shared with the federal, state and local government areas is mostly sourced from earnings derived from oil exports, taxes (Value Added Tax – VAT), Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL), Exchange Difference revenue and other statutory allocations. Other income sources include internally generated revenue and the 13% derivation revenue (for the benefitting states) which explains the higher allocations for the Niger Delta (oil-producing) states.
