RHYTHM – Episode 1

Pastor Derwin Gray

In the midst of this quarantine, in the midst of this pandemic, God is moving hearts, there is transformation taking place.

Have a daily rhythm, even if you're not going anywhere (which we shouldn't be), get up …just kind of have that regular routine.

We're introducing this new series called RHYTHM and RHYTHM is a metaphor for learning how to dance with God which is a double metaphor because it's simply walking with God living in the current of His grace and
mercy - being the people of God.

We were created for God by God to glorify
God and when that happens, that's when we really find life and purpose and value that God created us to be. He wants to express himself through us in all of life even in the midst of this epidemic, we are going to learn how to dance by faith in Messiah Jesus.

By faith in Messiah Jesus, we are going to learn how to cultivate RHYTHM which stands for:
Read Scripture - Holy Spirit - You - Trust - Hope - Mission

For today we're going to look at read scripture. At LifePort, we are a people of the sacred book the Bible. It's important for us to understand that the
Bible is not like any other book, we don't read the Bible like we're reading something academical, we're not reading the Bible for information, we're
reading the Bible for transformation so we become LifePorts (people can plug into us and experience the life of Christ) and it is God's word to us.

In the midst of this quarantine season you have to spend more time in the Bible than on Tik-Tok than on Facebook, than on Instagram, than on Twitter.

How can we trust that the Bible was copied accurately even though it is thousands of years old and it's been copied over and over?

When the Dead Sea scrolls were found, we realized that the Old Testament was copied accurately as well but let's look at the New Testament for now in comparison with other ancient literature.

Let's look at the New Testament - less than a hundred years between the original and the first copies and there's over 5,600 manuscripts it's actually close to 6,000 now and they are 99.5% accurate the 0.5% variance is just spelling/grammatical errors and not doctrinal.

3 Reasons Why We Should Read the Bible:
1. We get the honor of knowing and loving Jesus. (John 5:39-40 CSB, John 17:3, Philippians 3:8-9). The Bible is not about information it's about knowing Jesus on a very personal and practical level.
Jesus said the Scriptures don't give you an eternal life, they tell you about the one who is
eternal life. Wouldn't it be sad to spend your whole life reading the Bible and Jesus is right before you and you don't see Him? Maybe in this
pandemics God longs for you to know Him - are you spending time in His word?

2. We get to discover and participate in God’s will. (2 Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 119:105, Psalm 119:103-104, Hebrews 13:20-21). God's will for
your life and my life is in response to Jesus's death on the cross in our place (substitutionary atonement).

He wants to share his life with us so we can dance to the rhythm of his grace and this is what his dance looks like - God, I'm gonna love You with all of my heart with all of my soul with all of my strength and I love my neighbor as I love myself, and the greatest way I love my neighbor is by introducing them to Jesus’ love.

Whatever talent and ability you have, express it as a service to God. If you do stocks and bonds,
do it that way. If you teach English, do it that way. If you're in high school do it that way - all of life is worship to express God's will.

3. We get nourished and built up in our faith in Christ Jesus. (Jeremiah 15:16, Matthew 4:4, Acts 20:32). Word of God nourishes us. When we
read the Bible do we rush through it or do we savor it? The bible is not just for information but for transformation into making us LifePort and all that God would want us to be. God wants to meet with us, perhaps the joy we're missing is because we're missing 'eating' this book.

Jesus was tempted in His humanity in the wilderness by Satan, look how Jesus responded. He answered, it is written, Jesus answered with the Word of God 'it is written, man must not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'

Soul-tattoo: Read this affirmation daily: Spirit of God, give me a heart that hungers to know the Son of God, to the glory of God the Father. Lord
Jesus, give me grace to seek Your face as I marinate on Your sacred scriptures. I want to know and love You; I want a heart that overflows with Your divine love. Father, Your love is better than life. I’ve been created to dwell in Your glory and to live in Your story. May I take Your sacred
Scriptures and eat them daily. Nourish me and strengthen me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

How To Be Courageous Enough To Face Your Fears

Pastor Derwin Gray

If you and I continue to live in fear our family, our friends, our church and the world will miss our unique contribution…eventually we will rob God of his glory if we remain in fear.

Are you tired of living in fear? The sooner we admit that, the sooner God can do an epic work in our lives when we do admit “I am afraid and God I need you.”

Our Father in heaven wants his people to say Papa I need you, He wants to hear our voice.
Are you tired of being stuck in fear? Well God wants to give us courage to face our fears.

The children of Israel led by King Saul, are going into the Promised Land but there's a problem there. There's a group of people that are called the Philistines they were a big source of fear to the children of Israel. So it was like an ancient octagon and so the Philistines will send out their champion by the name of Goliath- big, strong, nasty, a champion, undefeated. So whoever would fight him and if they lost, they lost everything. So King Saul and Israel were so afraid.

What's the Goliath in your life right now…Is it pornography, is it addiction? Dysfunctional family? Cutting? The fear of COVID-19 and everything that comes with it? What is your Goliath?

How Do We Become Courageous Enough to Face Our Fears?

1. Love God’s GLORY more than your fear. David asked the soldiers standing nearby, “What will a man get for killing this Philistine and ending his defiance of Israel? Who is this pagan Philistine anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?”
He was passionate about God’s glory…paying attention to what brings glory to God above what brings fear to his heart. 1 Samuel 17:26(NLT). Fear can become a friend because it will push you to your father, God.
Where does fear take you? To a bottle?Prescriptions? Yoga? You are paralyzed because you're afraid of your fear more than you love the glory of God?

2. Ignore cowards. But when David’s oldest brother, Eliab, heard David talking to the men, he was angry. “What are you doing around
here anyway?” he demanded. “What about those few sheep you’re supposed to be taking care of? I know about your pride and deceit. You just want to see the battle!”1 Samuel17:28(NLT).
Don’t let them tell you, you are too young. What is God putting on your heart? What is that beautiful song in his symphony that he wants you to sing and you have that special note.
You're not too young!

3. Be YOU, not someone else. Then Saul gave David his own armor—a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before.“I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.
1 Samuel17:38-40 (NLT)

Would you do the world a favor and be you?
Because everybody else has already been taken. Do the world a favor and be you. The world needs you or God wouldn't have made you. If God wanted me to be somebody else, I wouldn't be here, I would be them.

4. Trust the KING of all Kings. David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel , whom you have defied. Today the LORD will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!”1 Samuel 17:45-46(NLT)
As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The
stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. Then David ran over and pulled
Goliath’s sword from its sheath. David used it to kill him and cut off his head. 1 Samuel17:48-51(NLT)

5. JESUS is the true David who defeated the true Goliath: Sin, Death, and Evil. You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. Colossi ans2:13-
15(NLT)

Soul-tattoo: Attack your fear by trusting God. And God doesn't want us to be paralyzed by fear. He wants that fear to move us to press into Him so that He can fight our battles for His glory.

Halleluyah!!!

FOCUS: STANDARD ATTITUDE IN DIFFICULT TIMES.
WHAT DO YOU SEE?

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
(Philippians 4:cool

We are welcome to yet another edition of the Life Discovery Online Gathering. Today, we will be building on the discussion we had last week on what the Christian attitude should be in difficult times like this. We will be talking about Focus!

The emphasis today will be on what we see.
In the times that we live in, many things scream for our attention.
Many times, we are often made to choose between options for what we spend our times on. The options we often have to choose from
might not necessarily be a case of good and bad.

Good and bad choices are often easier to make. We mostly know what is bad and what is good.

However, between good choices which should we go with? What determines our list of foregone alternatives? How do we decide who and what to listen to? What do we really see in a situation, or experience? It is important to be able to decide on these issues, because ultimately, they will determine how our lives turn out.

Matthew 13:1-23 has the parable of the Sower whose seeds fell on different types of land. The desire of the Sower is to see the seeds
germinate and bear fruits. So, God as the master Sower of our lives has a desire and expectation to see us live well and inherit abundance of Life (Luke 13: 6-9; Hebrews 6: 7-8; Jeremiah 29:11;
John 10:10).
Our innate desire for success, our hunger for more, our drive to live a meaningful life was inherited from God. Remember that we are originally made in His image (Gen 1: 26-27). His utmost desire for us is also to have eternal life (John 3:16; John 10:10), and be like Jesus (Hebrews 2: 5-18). This is what the bible calls the Rest of God (Hebrews chapters 3 and 4); a point where we are one with Christ.

To get us into God’s rest, God has carefully planned our path and intends to journey with us till we get there. However, like it happened in the Garden of Eden, there are distractions (Genesis 2: 9, 16 -17; Chapter 3).
Most of the challenges and disasters that we face come as repercussions from the distractions that we allow. So, like the different types of receiver that was mentioned in Matthew 13, we are either:
*By the wayside – Not here and there, we want to be a part of everything happening everywhere. As a result, focus is lost, and we are not even sure of when and how we lost the seed.
*Stony – Do not let the seed take root through focus and so could not hold on to it in the face of opposing options.
*Thorny – have many things that we are trying to focus on at the same time. As a result, focus is lost. So cares, deceitfulness of riches, other
desires, choke the seed out from germinating, and so no fruitfulness.
"Good Ground – focuses on the seed and bear fruits with it (Joshua 1:cool.

Therefore, our focus must be on being fruitful in the way that God wants and has designed it to be. That is where our fulfilment is (John
15:1-11). Let us remember that the gift of God’s seed in us is perfect, and it is only by focus that we can truly enjoy its full blessing (James 1: 17-25).

It is no longer news that the world is experiencing an event which has been gripping, scary, sobering, and worrisome on many levels.
However, while it is also okay to dwell on the events happening around us, worrying mostly about events and happenings that we cannot really change, we can also choose to look for what is channeled towards the goal – being fruitful the way God expects it to be.

In the times that we live in now, God expects that we become the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Basically meaning that we are to provide the direction and life, and bring grace to the world. So, where there is sadness, gloom, fear and despair, we are expected to be the hope and light.
To be able to do this, we must: keep our gaze firm on the goal – Christ (Hebrews 12: 1- 2)
-renew our minds consistently in God’s word (Romans 12:2)
-be diligent in our vocations (Proverbs 22:29, 10:4, 13:4; Eccl 9:10)
-make a habit of listening to and obeying the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:10-17)
-show God’s love to the world.

Therefore, let us point people to the cross. When the serpent plagued the Israelites and their salvation was in focusing on the brazen serpent that was hung on the pole (Numbers 21:4-9).

Now our salvation is on focusing on the Son that was crucified and has risen (John 3:14; Romans 6:5-6; 1Pet 1:3; Rev 20:6).

Action Point: This week, constantly remind yourself not to lose focus, but to remember why Jesus died and that he rose again.

COVID-19 AND THE CHURCH:
The Standard Response

The whole world is facing a challenging time, it’s no longer news that this is not just a China virus, it has become a global threat to health and socio-economic stability. We all bear the burden of COVID-19 pandemic either
-Pathogenically (for those who are already infected)
or
- Socio-Economically(friends/relative& those who care for victims, those who have lost loved ones to the disease, those who have lost businesses or means of livelihood due to the social implications of the disease and those whose social and economic life has been adversely affected due to control measures put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.

COVID 19 is not more of a “spiritual attack” than Malaria (in 2018 alone, there were estimated deaths of about 405,000 from malaria globally),
HIV/AIDS Pandemic Death Toll was 36 million between 2005-2012, Bubonic Plague in the 1340’s claimed almost 200 million lives, etc. So
COVID-19 should not be more “demonized” than other health issues.

God is calling Christians (the Church) to raise the standard in everything including with respect to our response to issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. What should be our standard response?

We will consider about 5 categories of standard responses we should engage in the face of COVID-19

1. Physical Response: Everything on earth is guided by laws and principles. There are laws and principles of hygiene guiding our health,
and once we break such laws we suffer the consequences in our health irrespective of our spirituality. Research and updates from COVID-19 shows that once we observe some basic hygiene, like regular hand washing and also follow standard precautions from health/regulatory agencies, the risk of COVID-19 infection or spread will be drastically
reduced. As Christians, in as much as we believe in and propagate divine protection, we should raise the standard and take the lead in
promoting basic hygiene principles alongside precautions from health and regulatory agencies.
The Bible’s main teaching about physical
cleanliness/hygiene appears in Leviticus 11–15. The need for isolation and washing is also emphasized incase we need a biblical validation

2. Civic Response: We Christians should set the standard to show respect for and obey Government /Political leaders when they come up with administrative procedures and social controls in the face of stemming the tides of the COVID-19 pandemic. Scripture instructs us to be in submission to them (Romans 13:1), but, just as importantly, because the only known way to keep this virus from spreading is to maintain
our distance from each other/crowd.
Some Christians are criticizing the government’s ban on churches gathering to worship and refusing to follow that directive. We need to remind ourselves that the church is not the building; the church is where 2 or 3 are gathered IN HIS NAME, which can take place in your living room.
The “universal church” should take priority over the “denominational church” at this time. Join up
with other believers in your house/compound, even if you belong to different denominations and worship God together… that is church!

3. Psychological Response: In recent times, their had be concerns over the psychological burden of COVID-19. However, our standard response is not to Panic or Fear. Boost your faith and not your fear.

Some COVID-19 updates when unhealthily perceived can send fears down your spine and your body could literarily be mimicking some of
the symptoms even though you might never have caught the bug.
We need to protect our mind much more than ever. “More than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from it” Proverbs 4:23 CEB.

4. Social Response: With the lock down being experienced in most cities across the world, it has become evident that we Christian must lay the standard when it comes to the COVID-19 Social Response.
Despite the controls of social distancing and #StayAtHome put in place, we can still creatively stay in Touch with Family, Friends, and fellow Christians.

Extended isolation can be very challenging. However, we can text, chat, email, talk on the phone, make video calls, attend virtual worship
services and Bible studies, etc.
So, take advantage of the available technology. Let’s bring the social back into the media. We should also be open to opportunities to help those in need as much as possible.

5. Spiritual Response: With the reduced social activities, take advantage of the opportunity to spend more time in personal spiritual development. Study the bible much more than ever, read books that enhance your spiritual growth. Spend more time in God’s presence and
in prayers. Take advantage of this opportunity to grow spiritually.

Action Point: Evaluate how you have responded in various ways to the COVID-19 pandemic (including how you have spent your time)…would
