President Bola Tinubu wants Nigeria’s service chiefs not to leave any stone unturned in the country’s battle against insecurity.

“I charge you, as the heads of our nation’s armed forces, to carry out your duties with patriotic zeal. Nigerians expect results, not excuses,” he told them at the event attended by top government dignitaries and others.

The president hailed the Armed Forces for their efforts in the country’s fight against insecurity which he believes has led to the restoration of “peace to many areas previously under siege, rescued countless kidnapped citizens, and significantly diminished the capacity of the terror groups”.

“I thank our armed forces for their patriotism, diligence, and dedication to their duty. As your Commander-in-Chief, I sincerely appreciate your sacrifices, as I have repeatedly acknowledged,” he said.

But the former Lagos State governor wants more from the military especially with the constantly evolving security threats across the country.

“Of grave concern to our administration is the recent emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South. We must not allow these new threats to fester,” the president said.

“We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.”

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed satisfaction with the level of progress recorded on the ongoing Trans-Kalabari Road project, saying about 75 per cent of the critical piling work has been completed.

Fubara spokewhile addressing journalists after an on-the-spot inspection of the 12.5-kilometre road project, which will connect the state capital to several Kalabari communities across the sea.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nelson Chukwudi.

According to the statement, the governor rode on a boat from a jetty at Rumuolumeni in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area through the rivers and creeks on the project route during the inspection.

The project was awarded to Lubrik Construction Company Limited on May 15, 2024, with an initial 32-month completion timeline.

The governor said the visit was aimed at verifying reports from the Ministry of Works regarding the project’s advancement; even as he commended the contractors for their dedication, and described the progress as “a true reflection of hard work and commitment to excellence.”

Fubara stated, “The first phase of the project takes us to Bakana, and features four major river-crossing bridges and nearly five deck-on-pile structures. The terrain is difficult, and the engineering work required is complex. But to the glory of God.

There was chaos in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Tuesday, after some suspected political thugs set ablaze the State Secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of the day, razed the party office located at Basiri Area of Ado-Ekiti and destroyed several valuables, including plastic chairs, canopies, sound system and office equipment.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised what he described as the Federal Government’s misplaced priorities, urging authorities to confront Nigeria’s worsening insecurity with the same intensity and urgency they apply to revenue generation.

In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Atiku condemned the government for celebrating revenue milestones while lives are being lost to unrelenting violence across the country.

“We cannot continue to lose our productive population to sundry criminalities and yet make bogus claims about reaching revenue targets, as though the lives of the workforce that produces the revenue don’t matter,” Atiku wrote.

His remarks followed a deadly attack on Wagga Mongono community in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Tuesday, which left at least four people dead, several others injured, and homes, shops, and a church destroyed by suspected insurgents. Many residents fled into nearby bushes to escape the violence.

Calling the incident “deeply personal” given his roots in Adamawa, Atiku expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. He described the tragedy as another painful reminder of Nigeria’s persistent insecurity and the government’s failure to decisively address it.

“Our people are certainly tired of government’s empty claims of improvements in security,” he said. “Nigerians would love to see this government exert the same pressure and commitment on security as it does on revenue targets.”

Atiku stressed that insecurity remains a daily threat for millions of Nigerians and that the Wagga Mongono attack underscores how far the country is from achieving lasting peace and stability.

“The government must move beyond mere rhetoric and propaganda and take decisive, sustained action to protect lives and property,” he added. “Nigerians deserve more than promises; they deserve peace, security, and the freedom to live in any place of their choice without fear.”

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Monday in Abuja, said he is at peace with his political principal, declaring that “proper peace” has returned to the state after months of political tension.

Speaking to journalists after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, Fubara stressed that he had resumed his duties in an atmosphere of peace and cooperation.

“As far as I’m concerned, we have made peace. Fubara and his principal are working together,” the governor said.

Although Fubara did not mention names, his remarks are seen as a reference to his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, with whom he has had a prolonged political feud.

The governor explained that his visit to Tinubu was a courtesy call and an opportunity to seek direction following the expiration of the six-month emergency rule in the state.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal.

“What do you mean by leadership and friendship? You cannot talk about leadership and ignore the person,” Wike said.

He accused Tambuwal and Atiku Abubakar of political inconsistency.
“These are people who have been consistently inconsistent. When you are a consistent betrayer, what do you expect?” he added.

Wike alleged that Tambuwal had his eyes on a Senate role if Atiku won the presidency. He said both men frequently switched political parties for personal gain.

The National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Felix Morka, has alleged that former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar has never been in touch with Nigerians.

Morka made the claim on Monday during an interview saying Atiku is completely out of touch with the situation in the country.

The APC spokesman was reacting to Atiku’s comments on hunger.

“At this point, I want to believe that Atiku is not in this country; he does not live in this country. He’s completely out of touch with what goes on in this country.

“I think he just goes back to his old notebooks and picks up a headline and begins to write as he does.

“If Atiku was paying attention to the unfolding economic programmes of this government, he wouldn’t have made the kind of statement that he made today.

“It’s so surprising that Atiku would make this statement on a day when every newspaper is reporting the lowering of our inflation numbers,” he said.
