He told the programme that such a “non-kinetic” policy amounted to empowering bandits.

However, the agency described the comments as unfair to the memory of security personnel who have died in the fight against banditry.

The statement read, “At no time has the ONSA, or any arm of government under this administration, engaged in ransom payments or inducements to criminals.

“On the contrary, we have consistently warned Nigerians against paying ransom. El-Rufai’s allegations are not only false but also contradict verifiable facts on ground.

“From inception, this government adopted a dual strategy: decisive kinetic operations alongside community engagements aimed at addressing local grievances.

“The result is evident in areas such as Igabi, Birnin Gwari, Giwa, and other parts of Kaduna that once suffered untold terror in Kaduna state but are now experiencing relative peace.”

The statement also paid tribute to members of the security services who lost their lives in operations, saying it was “deeply insulting” for a former state governor to deny those sacrifices on national television.

Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has criticised his political aides for undervaluing their salaries in public.

He claims that his Personal Assistants (PA), the lowest-paid among his appointments, earn at least ₦1 million per month.

Eno said this during the Town Square Meeting with the people of Ikono and Ini Federal Constituency at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo where he elevated his PA on Protocol, Blessed Essien, to Special Assistant (SA), Public Works, for making a difference when he donated a water borehole for his community.

“As I arrived here, they gave me one brochure by a PA who out of the token (pay) he gets, has gone to his community to do a borehole and has replicated it around the village,” he stated.

“One man has done this, but some of them with political appointments are still lying to their people that the governor has done nothing. He has done nothing, and you’re still there. Some say ordinary PA, but a PA to the governor of a state cannot be ordinary.

“Hear me well, no PA earns less than a million naira. And when they want to talk, they will say it is a stipend. You call one million naira stipend. It is not a stipend to me. It is serious money.

“So I’ve asked the Secretary of the Government to compile names of all political appointees according to their local government areas, we are going to publish it in the newspaper.”

The governor then tasked the people, saying, “call your PAs, call your SAs, SSAs, call your Commissioner, ask them, what have you done?”. He then told Essien, “today you are being promoted from PA to SA (to the Governor) on Public Works.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on another nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of reneging on agreements dating back to 2009.

Addressing journalists at the University of Jos on Thursday, ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said lecturers have endured years of unfulfilled promises and delay tactics. He listed unresolved issues to include the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, unpaid salary arrears, withheld promotions, and poor welfare for retired lecturers.

Piwuna dismissed the government’s proposed tertiary institutions staff loan scheme as “a trap,” insisting that what lecturers need is improved wages and the implementation of agreements, not loans. He added that many professors who served the nation for decades now receive pensions as low as ₦150,000 monthly despite soaring inflation.

The union also criticised the proliferation of universities without adequate funding, warning that the trend is eroding standards and worsening Nigeria’s global ranking.

Dominic Alancha, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says a joint ticket between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could deal a heavy blow to the ruling party in the 2027 elections.

Abubakar and Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) platforms, respectively, but both lost to Bola Tinubu of the APC.

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has invited Miss Jenifer Elohor, the female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member recently assaulted by operatives of the state-controlled Agunechemba security outfit, to the Government House for a private meeting.

Dr. Soludo, who personally reached out to the corps member via phone call, expressed sympathy over the incident and assured her of justice.

An aide to the governor’s wife disclosed:

“Her Excellency called the lady on phone, sympathized with her, and invited her to the Government House. However, the corps member explained that she is currently out of Anambra State but promised to honour the invitation once she returns. A new report by Smart DNA Nigeria has revealed that one in every four paternity tests conducted in the country still returns a negative result, highlighting a persistent paternity crisis and deepening trust concerns within Nigerian families.

The 2025 Annual DNA Testing Report, released this week by the Lagos-based genetic testing company, showed that 25 per cent of paternity tests conducted between July 2024 and June 2025 confirmed that presumed fathers were not biologically related to the children. Although slightly lower than the 27 per cent recorded in 2024, the figure underscores what the firm described as a “worrying and consistent trend.”

“These findings are not just about science; they tell us something profound about trust, relationships, and the legal and economic realities of Nigerian families today,” said Elizabeth Digia, Smart DNA’s Operations Manager.

The report noted that firstborn children, particularly boys, were most affected, with 64 per cent of negative results involving first sons. It also found that immigration-related testing surged to 13.1 per cent of cases, driven by the rising “Japa” emigration wave, while most tests (83.7 per cent) were done for peace of mind rather than legal purposes.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has clarified that the appointment of Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an “ambassador for airport security protocol” will not come with any pay or privileges.

Keyamo, in a post on his X handle, explained that the role is akin to community service, often given to repentant offenders to publicly advocate against the same misconduct they committed.

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a two-nation working visit to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stop in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In Japan, the President will attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22. Themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, the conference will focus on Africa’s economic transformation, private sector investment, institutional strengthening, and the creation of a resilient, sustainable African society.

Beyond the plenary sessions, President Tinubu is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings and meet executives of Japanese companies with investments in Nigeria.

TICAD, initiated in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the UN, UNDP, African Union Commission, and World Bank, is held every three years, alternating between Japan and Africa. The last edition took place in Tunisia in August 2022.
