10. Antonio Puerta
Left back, Sevilla
Left winger 2004–2007
The shirt has not been fully retired. It was temporarily retired after Puerta died of a cardiac arrest on the first matchday in La Liga 2007–2008 However, the Spanish Football Federation rules state that clubs must use number 1 to 25 for their regular squad, and as a result, David Prieto wore the number in 2008 in honour of his friend.

9. Phil O'Donnell
Midfielder 1990–1994, 2004–2007

Phil O'Donnell collapsed while playing for Motherwell against Dundee United in 2007. He was later pronounced dead at Wishaw General Hospital. The number 10 shirt was worn by his nephew David Clarkson during the 2008-09 season. Since Clarkson left in June 2009, it has not been retired, but has not been issued to any subsequent player.

8. Meni Levi
Defender –2007
During a game between Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem, Levi chest-controlled and kicked the ball, ran back to defend, then collapsed. He returned to his feet, and then collapsed a second time. He was subsequently on a life-support machine, and has since returned home. The club claims that the number 12 is unofficially reserved for the fans... Levi was treated for years in Beit Levinstein, and later on returned to his family house in a vegetative state .

To this day Meni is being visited by Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, players and management several times a year. Meni sometimes interacts with them with smiles, blinks and tears.

6. Igor Protti
Livorno
Striker 1985–1988, 1999–2005

In December 2005, Livorno officially retired the #10 jersey. However, Protti, who led the forward line and captained his side in two promotions from Serie C1 to Serie A, quickly gaining a reputation as a fan favourite, announced his willingness to see the #10 number reissued to another player, in order to "give anybody back a dream to dress it one day." This was made effective starting from the 2007–08 season, in which
Francesco Tavano played with the #10 number.

5. Norrie McCathie

Dunfermline Athletic
Defender 1981–1996
The club retired the number after club captain McCathie was found dead in his home on 8 January 1996, as a result of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. At that time, Scottish League clubs used shirt numbered from 1 to 11, so for the remainder of the 1995–96 season, 12 was used instead. However, the number was not retired permanently, and has been re-issued since.

4. Diego Maradona
Midfielder 1979–1994

The number 10 had been retired by Argentine Football Association in October 2001 to honour Maradona. Before the 2002 World Cup, the AFA submitted a squad list of 23 players for the tournament, listed 1 through 24, with the number 10 omitted. FIFA rejected Argentina's list, and the governing body's president, Sepp Blatter suggested the number 10 shirt be instead given to the team's third-choice goalkeeper, Roberto Bonano. AFA ultimately submitted a revised list with Ariel Ortega, originally listed as number 23, as the number 10.[48] The number 10 has been worn by other players since, most notably by Lionel Messi , whom Maradona considers his "successor."

3. Stanislav Vlček
Striker 2004-2007, 2009-2013

Rather than retiring the number, the club opted to freeze the number for any future player that wants it, provided that the applying player meets 7 game achievements. Among those are scoring 3 goals overall against Sparta, being nominated for his national team, winning the trophy for top goalscorer and others. Even though Milan Škoda met the requirements in 2016-17 season, he opted to keep his number 21. The 7 was eventually given to Danny upon him joining the team for 2017-18 season. Vlček gave his consent and Danny pledged to work to meet the remaining criteria.

2. Aldair 1990–2003
Centre-back
As Roma

The shirt number had been retired by the club when the player left the club in 2003. When Kevin Strootman joined Roma in 2013, he asked for permission to wear number 6. The club approved the request after Aldair gave his consent.

Sports / List Of Retired Numbers In Association Football by limpopo: 4:27pm On Mar 09, 2018
Retiring a player's number usually occurs after the player has left the team or retired. It honours a player who has meant so much to his club that they retire the shirt number that the player wore during their time there, meaning no other player is permitted to use that number in the future.. Association football clubs around the world sometimes retire squad numbers to recognise players' loyal service, sometimes as a memorial after their death.

1. Paolo Maldini
1984–2009
Left back,

Ac Milan

The shirt was not fully retired. Maldini has given consent for his sons to adopt the number 3 shirt if either of them play professionally for the club.

6. Kanye West - Wolves

There is a lot of crying in this video. A lot of crying and a lot of models.
Kanye West hooked up with the fashion house Balmain to create a monochrome study in which models are shunted into position like showroom dummies, while the tears run down his face, and the faces of Cindy Crawford and Kim Kardashian, and maybe even Sia, but it's hard to tell under that fringe.
Steven Klein directed the video as an exercise in humanity amid inhumanity, the emotionless features of the models - whose clothes are very much there to be appreciated - contrasting with the immaculately dressed celebrity tears. Arguably there's not a lot of real crying on display, but the lyrics are fairly desperate, including the rather paranoid couplet: "You tried to play nice, everybody just took advantage / You left your fridge open, somebody just took a sandwich."

5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps

There's no cynical or manipulative edge to the tears in this video. Yeah Yeah Yeahs filmed the promo for their 2003 single Maps through the framing device of the film shoot - with a crew sitting about looking bored while the band perform and a director audibly shouting instructions from behind a camera - but singer Karen O's genuine distress wiped out the possibility of this coming across as arch or knowing.
She later told the NME that she had been expecting her then-boyfriend (Angus Andrew of Liars ) to turn up at the shoot to wish her well for the band's tour. It would've been an emotional goodbye as it was, but he was three hours late, leaving her to perform her band's most tender song while feeling abandoned. She said: "They were real tears... I didn't think he was even going to come and this was the song that was written for him. He eventually showed up and I got myself in a real emotional state."

5. Mary J. Blige - No More Drama

The whole point of the video for No More Drama is to put Mary J. Blige into several hugely upsetting situations - including domestic violence, gang-related shootings and drug deaths - as a kind of musical conscience, offering redemption, strength and wisdom while absorbing the emotional heat. The heart of the song is her decision to live in the light amid trying times, to leave behind destructive (and dramatic) personal circumstances in the cause of inner peace, and in the act of doing that, the tears in the video feel like tears of relief, rather than self-pity.
She told Billboard that these empathic sobs have always been a firm part of her working method: "We cried so much on the My Life album. We were so confused on the Share My World album. We went through a lot together and we almost died together, but I figured out a way to get us out of this private hell we're living in. The No More Drama album was about bringing the joy that I found to all those people who were crying with me."

3. Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball

The video that launched a thousand think-pieces, Wrecking Ball is often singled out for its over-literal use of a swinging metal ball being ridden by a naked Miley Cyrus, who goes on to lick a sledgehammer in a way that is, frankly, unhygienic. It caused no end of fuss about the use of sexualised imagery in pop videos, and in that sense it singularly failed in its one job - to support the emotive depth of the song it illustrates.
But it does start with the arresting shot of a tearful Miley singing the first verse direct to camera against a white background. In fact, Wrecking Ball the song has moved its singer to tears on numerous occasions, and although this has been attributed to the breakup of her relationship with Liam Hemsworth, Miley told KISS radio in Seattle that her tears on the day of the shoot were deliberate: "When I was on the video set, I was thinking about my dog that had passed away, which is the worst thing that has ever happened to me... I kept thinking about that when I was trying to cry because it's more awkward actually crying in front of a room full of people than you would think swinging naked on a wrecking ball is; it's a lot more uncomfortable to cry and let yourself go with that emotion."

2. Michael Jackson - She's Out of My Life

Years before Sinéad let her feelings flood out, another singer sat on a soundstage, surrounded by crew and equipment and cameras, feeling a little bit lost and vulnerable. Michael Jackson was taking his first steps away from being a surprisingly mature child performer - with songs about schoolyard crushes and whatnot - and into the world of complex adult emotions. In the case of She's Out of My Life, these would include despair and regret to such a profound degree that he struggled to finish a single take of the song without breaking down in tears, and would later write that he felt "so rich in some experiences while being poor in moments of true joy".
In the CD booklet for the re-released Off the Wall - the album the song is on - producer Quincy Jones later recalled: "When we recorded it with Michael, I know it was an experience he'd never even thought about to sing in a song, 'cause it's a very mature emotion. And he cried at the end of every take, you know. We recorded about - I don't know- 8-11 takes, and every one at the end, he just cried, and I said, 'Hey, that's supposed to be, leave it on there.'"
Consequently, when Michael came to record the video, which is a sedate affair - just him in a darkened room emoting for all he is worth - the tears came as they always had. There's a little edit to spare his blushes, but it does nothing to lessen the emotional intensity.

1. Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

The original intention for this, the most iconic example of crying in a music video, was already pretty intense. Director John Maybury focused in on Sinéad O'Connor 's face, intending to cut between her performance and some sombre shots in which she strolls mournfully around the Parc de Saint-Cloud in Paris. While singing the lyrics - which flit between anguish and devotion - she began to think about her mother Marie, someone with whom she had had a fractious relationship, and whom she would later accuse of abusing her violently as a child. Marie had died in a car crash when Sinead was 19.
As she reached the line, "All the flowers that you planted, Mama / In the backyard / All died when you went away," her face crumpled and two tears ran down her cheeks, at which point John Maybury realised he wouldn't need as many of those moody Paris shots after all. Sinéad later told Rolling Stone: "I didn't intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, 'I should let this happen.'"

Tears aren't always a sign of self-pity. They can reflect anger, relief, fear and even happiness, and that's why they've been such a useful addition to the pop video director's arsenal of things singers can do on camera.

A few drops down the cheek can bring home the emotional intensity of a song in visual terms, in much the same way as a vocal sob or grain of hoarseness, or anything that suggests the performer is no longer in full control of their emotions and has had to surrender to the moment.

Here are a few key examples:
Politics / Former President Jonathan Exposes Lies In Bolaji Abdullahi's Book by limpopo: 7:22am On Nov 24, 2017
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Bolaji Abdullahi is a liar. Dr. Jonathan also said that the APC’s spokesman’s book, "On a Platter of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria" which attempted a narration of how he (Jonathan) lost the 2015 election, is equally “a tissue of lies.” Jonathan who spoke through his former aide and bestselling author, Pastor Reno Omokri, also said that Mr. Abdullahi’s book claimed that he (Jonathan) had convened a meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, elites to renege on his decision, after earlier conceding defeat to the then candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, party, who is now President Muhammadu Buhari for emerging winner in the 2015 presidential election.
Dr. Jonathan, in the statement, also said that Abdullahi’s book “is as Shakespeare described in Scene 5, Act 5 of his play ‘Macbeth’ that It is “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”. According to him, “Two months ago when I got details of the contents of the book by the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, I described him as a liar and his book as a tissue of lies meant to defame Former President Jonathan as the 2019 elections draw near and the yearning for a return to the years when the Peoples Democratic Party governed Nigeria reaches fever pitch. Now that the book is out, I can prove those claims and challenge Mr. Abdullahi to sue me in court for libel or defamation if I have lied.

In Bolaji Abdullahi’s new book, ‘On a Platter of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria’, he alleges that former President Jonathan, after calling to concede to then candidate Muhammadu Buhari, reneged on his concession by calling a meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party elite at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, with the sole aim of getting the party to reject the results of the election he had conceded. In the book, Mr. Abdullahi revealed that he was basing this claim on the hearsay report of an unnamed South-South Governor, and wrote, and I quote: “One South-South governor disclosed that this banquet hall meeting was not the president’s original idea. He said soon after the president made the telephone call to Buhari, some governors had gone to him to express their reservations about it. They felt he had conceded too cheaply. Their argument was that if the president and the party had rejected the outcome of the election, they would have gained a stronger platform to negotiate their exit.” Mr. Abdullahi further said: “Present at the meeting were Vice President, Namadi Sambo; Senate President David Mark and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu; as well as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, who had also just contested and lost the governorship election in Imo State and was challenging the results.

Others included: the People’s Democratic Party Board of Trustees Chairman, Tony Anenih; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim; Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke; Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi. All members of PDP National Working Committee (NWC) were also present, led by the party chairman, Adamu Mu’azu. The meeting was chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan”. In the book, Mr. Abdullahi revealed that this meeting held “four days” after the election on a Tuesday evening.

Nigerians would remember that the 2015 Presidential elections held on March 28, 2015. It would further be recalled that former President Jonathan called then candidate Buhari to concede the election at precisely 5: 15 PM on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. This timeline was also verified by the camp of the then candidate Buhari in a statement to the BBC’s Mansur Ali. If, as Mr. Abdullahi claims, former President Jonathan called the so-called meeting to renege on his concession on Tuesday the 31st of March, 2015, it would mean that Jonathan called the meeting only 45 minutes after he conceded. Because he conceded at 5.15 PM on March 31st 2015 and Mr. Abdullahi claimed the meeting held at 6 PM on March 31st, 2015. How would it have been possible to call each participant and summon governors, Senators, Representatives, members of the PDP BOT and “ALL members of PDP National Working Committee (NWC)” who were at different parts of the country and have all of them gather at the State House in just 45 minutes? Mind you, former President Jonathan conceded while the results were still being counted and long before they were even announced.

It was not even public knowledge that President Jonathan had conceded. In the book, Mr. Abdullahi further said: “By 6:00 pm, all the President’s men, and party bigwigs began to gather at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa. Many had rushed back to Abuja for the meeting, anxious to know the next line of action. They had all heard the audio of the phone call, but opinions were sharply divided on whether the president had thrown in the tow.”

But how could this be true when the audio of the call had not yet been leaked and published by the British Broadcasting Corporation? The audio was leaked (probably by the Buhari camp) and published on April 2, 2015, two clear days AFTER the ‘meeting’ described by Mr. Abdullahi. Also, according to Mr. Abdullahi, present at the meeting was “Emeka Ihedioha, who had just contested and lost the governorship election in Imo State and was challenging the results”. How could this have been possible when the gubernatorial elections did not hold until April 11, 2015, 11 clear days AFTER this purported meeting? Can Mr. Abdullahi explain this? Did Emeka Ihedioha travel to the future in a time machine and return to the past with a prophecy? You see, no matter how far and fast falsehood has traveled, it must eventually be overtaken by truth.
The fact remains that it is doubtful that any SouthSouth Governor could have told Mr. Abdullahi such tales and even if he had been fed such fantastic stories, then the onus was on Mr. Abdullahi as a journalist to verify any hearsay or gossip he heard before rushing to the press to embarrass himself. In conclusion, Bolaji Abdullahi’s book is as Shakespeare described in Scene 5, Act 5 of his play ‘Macbeth’. It is “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”.

Ironically, Macbeth is a play about the political ambition of those who seek power for its own sake. What a fitting description of Mr. Abdullahi and his puppet masters in the APC.”
