Scholarships for Developing Countries in Italy

The Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP) aims at offering IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) fellowship opportunities to Ph.D. students from developing countries in the fields of physics and mathematics.

The goal of STEP is to strengthen the scientific capability of young scientists and researchers from developing countries to better contribute and serve the scientific, technical, and economic development of their home countries.

The ICTP, with the support and close collaboration of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme, offers fellowships to candidates from the IAEA member States in the following fields of training:

Atomic, nuclear physics
Nuclear, isotope and laser techniques applied to: human health; agriculture; biotechnology and biophotonics; water resources and environmental studies
Synchrotron radiation and applications
Biophotonics
Medical radiation physics

Fellowship are also provided by the ICTP, within its scientific and technical competence, to candidates from developing countries in the fields listed below:

Condensed matter and statistical physics
High energy physics
Mathematics
Earth system physics
Applied physics The programme benefits also from the financial assistance of the CEI (Central European Initiative) which supports candidates from CEI countries, and of the UNESCO-ICTP Mori Fellowship Scheme which supports candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Scholarships for Developing Countries in Italy - Location of Training

Training and/or research work will take place in one of the following institutions located in the Trieste geographical area:

The programme aims at an equitable participation of fellows, and therefore especially welcomes applications from woman scientists.

Awards are assigned by the merit of the thesis proposed by the home country advisor, as decided by the STEP selection committee.

Once a STEP fellow is selected, the ICTP will assign the fellow to the appropriate host institute with a designated co-advisor.

The advisors from both the home and the host institutes will jointly supervise the fellow’s research.

The two advisors are expected to coordinate the research and training work of the fellow, which is concluded when the fellow student obtains the PhD at his home institute.

The fellowships are awarded for a period of at least three months to be spent by the fellows at host institutes during the first year.

Pending the approval of the host institute and the two supervisors, the fellowship is renewable for up to two additional successive years.

Fellowships in Public Health & Tropical Medicine

Fellowships in Public Health & Tropical Medicine support outstanding researchers from low- and middle-income countries to establish themselves as leading investigators at an academic institution in a low- and middle-income country location.

Research projects should be aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health.

Public Health Fellowship Eligibility

Applications are only accepted in the Public Health and Tropical Medicine Interview Committee remit. This covers research on infectious and non-communicable diseases within the fields of public health and tropical medicine that is aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health.

This can include laboratory based molecular analysis of field or clinical samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be considered under this scheme.

You must be a national or legal resident of a low- and middle- income country, and be either a:

graduate in a subject relevant to public health or tropical medicine (for example; biomedical or social science, veterinary medicine, physics, chemistry or mathematics) with a PhD and at least five years' postdoctoral experience, or
medical graduate with a higher qualification equivalent to membership of the UK Royal College of Physicians (i.e. qualified to enter higher specialist training), or be recognised as a specialist within a relevant research area, and have at least five years' research experience.

Applicants who do not have a PhD but who are educated to first degree or Master's level and have substantial research experience, as evidenced by their publication record, may be considered.

Public Health Fellowship Applications

Fellowships are for up to five years in the first instance and provide support that includes:

a basic salary
research expenses (e.g. consumables, equipment, collaborative travel, research assistance, technical support, fieldwork and data collection)
training costs where appropriate and justified
an inflation allowance and support to attend scientific meetings.

Contributions to costs of the project that are directly incurred by the overseas institution may also be provided.

The salary should normally be based on the pay scales of the employing institution and must be justified by the head of the institution.

The salary level should be appropriate for the holder of a competitive grant and allow him/her to focus full time on research.

If the fellow is already in receipt of a salary from the host institution, the host institution may use the salary to pay for a replacement member of staff while we provide the fellow's salary for the duration of the fellowship.

It is not expected that the fellow will hold a salary in addition to the one provided by the Trust.

Overseas allowances will be provided for periods of training or collaborative research spent outside the home institution country, where appropriate.

Research-dedicated costs (excluding salary costs) should not exceed £100 000 per annum.

This fellowship is subject to competitive rolling scientific review every five years, and will be renewed on the basis that the Trust and the host institution will jointly fund the Senior Fellow's basic employment costs through a partnership arrangement for the duration of any renewal period.

AU-TWAS Young Scientist National Awards

The African Union and TWAS offer support for African countries to establish awards for young African scientists.

TWAS, the African Union (AU) and national ministries of science and technology are entering into partnerships with national science academies, scientific research councils and high-level research organizations in Africa to establish 'AU-TWAS Young Scientist National Awards’.

Deadline: 30 June 2015

Partner Organizations: African Union

Eligible Nominees: AU-TWAS countries

Field: None

Age limit: 40

The awards are designed to recognize scientific excellence in their countries. In each participating country, two USD5,000-prizes will be awarded each year in the categories of:

'Life and earth sciences', and
'Basic sciences, technology and innovation'.

For African countries, this programme replaces the TWAS Prizes for Young Scientists in Developing Countries award scheme.

Procedure

African organizations intending to award AU-TWAS Young Scientist National Awards in their respective countries are required to sign an agreement of collaboration with TWAS, the AU and their national ministry of science and technology that outlines the rules and regulations governing the scheme. The scheme is then managed by the participating organization while TWAS and the AU provide the prize money.
Candidates eligible for the prizes should be no older than forty years of age at the time of winning the prize; hold at least a Master's degree; have a good record of research publications in internationally recognized journals; be living and working in the country of the awarding organization for at least the previous three years.
Nominations of women scientists are particularly encouraged.
The closing date for nominations is 30 June each year: Africa Scientific Renaissance Day.

A committee of eminent scientists in the country — including TWAS members, where applicable — should be formed for selecting the prize winners. Names of committee members should be sent to TWAS for information.

The awarding organizations should send a complete profile of the selected nominees to TWAS, providing details on their achievements together with curriculum vitae and list of publications. Approval of TWAS and the AU is required before announcing the names of the winners.

The prize should be presented to the awardees by a high-ranking public figure (e.g., head of state/government, minister of science and technology) at a special ceremony held each year on 9 September: Africa Union Day.

Participating Organizations

To date, TWAS and the AU have signed agreements with ministries of science and technology and participating organizations in 14 countries. The participating organizations are:

Benin: Centre Beninois de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique (CBRST)
Burkina Faso: Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique et Tecnologique (CNRST)
Cameroon: Cameroon Academy of Sciences
Egypt: Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT)
Ghana: Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences
Guinea: Organisation Scientifique National de Stimulation de la Recherche en Guinee
Kenya: Directorate of Research Management and Development (DRMD), Kenya
Lesotho: Department of Science and Technology

Nigeria: Nigerian Academy of Sciences
Senegal: National Academy of Science and Technology (ANSTS)
South Africa: Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf)
Sudan: Sudan Institute for Natural Sciences (SIFNS)
