Lecturers of Benue State University (BSU) on Friday expressed their discontent with the non-payment of their September salary. At the same time, they remain adamant over their demands which led to their current strike.

Talking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi, the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in BSU, Dr Samuel Ikoni, said the non-payment of the September was worrisome and caused some hardship to the lecturers. "It is unclear if the non-payment of our salary is connected to the no-work-no-pay threat issued by Gov Gabriel Suswam some weeks ago," he said.

Suswam had ordered the lecturers to return to work or forfeit their salary. But the lecturers, did not follow the order, insisting that their continued participation in the strike was for the benefit of the BSU. Ikoni, however, noted that the non-payment of salary was not peculiar to ASUU members alone, as members of the non-academic staff union were yet to receive their salary too. He stressed that the lecturers' salary payment schedule, which was taken to the bank, did not have "a cash backing'' to enable payment.

It will be reminded, that ASUU has embarled upon an indefinite strike since June 30, 2013. The lecturers protest against the FG's failure to honour a 2009 agreement signed between it and ASUU in 2009 pertaining to issues of university funding and improvement of infrastructure in the sector.

Towards ending the ongoing ASUU strike, the Federal Government has committed to spending N200 billion in the 2014 budget on the universities as well as on each of the next three-four years until the universities are brought to world-class standard. This is in addition to the N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013.

The government has also increased to N40 billion as a first installment, funds for the payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers, an improvement from the N30 billion previously released.

This information is contained in an internal Federal University of Otuoke statement by Professor Bolaji Aluko, its Vice-Chancellor, seen on Wednesday night by SaharaReporters.

On the earned allowances, he explained, “Government will top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of this new figure of N40 million, so Vice-Chancellors are urged to expedite this disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the CVC,” the circular said.

Professor Aluko said the development followed meetings on September 19 and Oct 11 of representatives of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by CVC Chairman, Prof. Hamisu of ATBU and ASUU Representatives led by its President, Dr. N. Fagge with the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. Namadi. Sambo, Minister of Education Barr. N. Wike and others.

Of great interest to stakeholders, Vice-President Sambo, appealing to ASUU to call off the strike, apologized for the "take-it-or-leave-it" comments credited to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at the onset of the strike. The Minister did not seem to have been involved in either meeting, perhaps as the government’s way of soothing the feelings of the university teachers.

Other points of agreement at the meetings include the following:

Project Prioritization: Universities will now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be “rail-roaded” into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to be centralized.
TETFund Intervention: Government assured that the operations of the TETFund will not be impaired, and that the regular TETFund intervention disbursement to Universities will continue, unaffected. So the NEEDS assessment capital outlays are in addition to regular TETFund intervention.
Project Monitoring: A new Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the NEEDS Assessment intervention for universities has been set up to take over from the Suswan Committee. The new one is under the Federal Ministry of Education and chaired by the Honorable Minister of Education. In addition, to build confidence and ensure faithful implementation and prevent any relapse as before, the Vice President will meet quarterly with the IMC to monitor progress.
Blueprint: ASUU was mandated to submit a blue print for revitalizing the Universities to the Vice President.
Prof. Aluko further stated that a signed document will soon be issued to itemize the full issues on which the consensus he had outlined here, as brokered by AVCNU, was reached.

A pro-Jonathan political rally, disguised as a Unity and Peace rally, has ended
abruptly on a tragic note in Kaduna, with an unspecified number of participants reportedly injured, with some dripping with blood.
At least two people were stabbed and
rushed to hospital while several others
suffered minor injuries after participants
began to use dangerous weapons on one
another, witnesses said.
The rally, reportedly bankrolled by a
governor from the South-south geopolitical
zone, was organized under the auspices of
the Northern Youth Forum, which has
members in the 19 northern states.
The governor is believed to have shelled out
N500million for the rally meant to buoy
President Jonathan's acceptance in the
north ahead of the 2015 presidential
election.
The participants, those familiar with the
organisation of the rally said, were bused to
Kaduna from all the 19 northern states and
paid N3000 each.
In the invitations to participants, organizer
Jubril Tafida, a former vice-chairman of a
local government in Kaduna and current
youth leader of the Northern Youth Forum,
had claimed the rally was called to promote
unity in the north.
But shortly after the event began at the
Murtala Muhammed Square in central
Kaduna, it dawned on participants that the
rally was organised to drum up support for
the reelection bid of President Goodluck
Jonathan, witnesses said.
Muhammed Bello, who attended the event,
said the rally turned violent after Mr. Tafilda
and other speakers began to heap praises
on President Jonathan in their speeches.
"As they praised Jonathan, some elements
in the crowd began exhibiting campaign
posters of the President," Mr. Bello said. "A
lot of participants became angry and they
started throwing stones and bottles at the
organizers. People started running in
different directions. Some people were
saying they don't want to hear Jonathan's
name at the rally."
Another witness said the police was later
called in to restore order.
"The police started shooting teargas until
everyone dispersed," he said.
Spokesperson of the Kaduna state police command, Aminu Lawan, could not be
reached to comment for this story, as calls to his telephone failed to connect.
Mr. Tafida's telephone was also switched off the several times reporter called.

klassic: The only question I wish to ask is dis. Have u ever sat down to ask why North korea outrightly banned these carbonated drinks including coke? 2. Have u tried taking any soft drink when not chilled as u would with water and natural juice or any home made drink? If yes, how do u find ur experience ? Is it in anyway enjoyable? 3. Have u heard of asparteme ? Do a check on it before u comment pls. 4. Finally , save and except home made or natural drinks like yogurt, soy milk , etc are much more expensive and non- adictive while chemicalised drinks are adictive and plays ur body into wanting more? Or makes u feel a day without it is a horrible worthless day? Not even energy or soda are excepted. Worthy of note though if the FDA which is a highly regulated body could be bought over by fastfoods, beverage and tobacco companies, then don't you make NAFDAC a trustee of ur well being, cos its foolish. For more inquiries, criticise constructively. But before you do this, please read more on causes of obescity in the western world, why soft drinks are adictive, FDA saga on chemicalized meat, and FDA and privatly funded researchers sage / claims on asparteme. I rest my case.

i wonder hw many Nigerians check d content or ingredient of wat they take or consum every day? Some one is here condemin lacasera........... All soft drinks ar nt actually soft as dey sound. Some contains phosphorus, some Arabic gum nd some ascorbic acid nd sodium benzoat which can cause cancer. Energy drinks ar even worst cuz its injurious to the heart.
