South-south, South-east Lawmakers Oppose Grazing Bill

Lawmakers in Nigeria’s South-south and South-east geo-political zones have opposed the proposed grazing bill of the federal government.

The legislators also urge their counterparts at the National Assembly to kick against the bill, saying it is not in the interest of the nation’s unity.

The opinions were formed when they converged at Owerri, the Imo State capital, south-east Nigeria for the first parliamentary session of South-south and South-east State Assemblies to discuss the issues bothering on the proposed grazing bill as well as issues of militancy and bombings in the Niger Delta.

In his welcome address, the host and Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable Acho Ihim, hinted that the South-south and the South-east states have many things in common in the region, not leaving out challenges,stressing the need for the first joint parliamentary session to bid a way forward in addressing their challenges.

Reacting to the grazing reserve proposals and activities of herdsmen in the geo-political zones, a lawmaker from Abia moved a motion on the position of legislators in both region.

After much deliberations and contributions, the legislators opposed the grazing bill, urging all Assemblies in the region to pass bills restricting cattle rearing and prohibit grazing of cattle from one location to another.

They insisted that the proposed bill to establish and control grazing routes and reserves should be rejected.

After the session, some of the lawmakers hinted that the theme of their gathering would go a long way to unite the South-south and South-east zones, as well as Nigeria in general.

In attendance were the Speakers from Ebonyi, Delta, Cross River, Imo, Edo, Bayelsa, and Abia states while Deputy Speakers from Akwa Ibom, Anambra and Enugu states represented their speaker amidst a large number of legislators from the the two zones.

WARRI- MILITANTS blew up another oil facility suspected to belong to Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, around Ogidigben, Warri South West Local in Delta State, Thursday evening.

A source told Vanguard: “The incident occurred along the Chanomi Creek around Ogidigben area about 8.00 pm.”

“Though, I cannot give you concrete details of the situation at the scene of incident for now. We got reports from our field office that a loud explosion was heard at the location, which was followed by a huge ball of fire,” he said.

A community leader, who also confirmed the incident, said: “My people called to tell me that there was an explosion, they blew up the manifold at Ogidigben and they are going there now to see what actually happened.”

Arsenal is an English football club in the English premier League. For Over 12 years now, it is observed that the club has not lifted a major trophy.

APC on the other hand, is a political party in Nigeria which projected Mohammad Buhari to win the presidency in Nigeria in the 2015 general elections.
The party emerged victorious mostly due to the flambouyant promises made to the Nigerian populace. Their promises came at a time people believed the then government, led Goodluck Jonathan was eating alone, in what is termed corruption! These promises were so mouth watering that everybody was enticed.

Now, the government is struggling to keep to their promises. This has made APC supporters, like Arsenal fans struggle to defend the government. But it seems the more the supporters try to defend the party and government, the more job the government gives them to do. The most recent of course is the President's travel abroad for ear treatment. Many critics are of the opinion that he should've shown a good example, following his declaration over none payment for government officials medical tourism. Others say that the state house clinic which got more allocation than many Federal Teaching hospitals should be able to admit the president.

After all these, many of the APC fans are getting extinct from Nairaland for lack of what to say to defend their master, chief amongst them are Passingshot and Omenka. Recently, they seem too passive on Nairaland. Could it be that they have run out of what to say or are still gathering points?. .

President Muhammadu Buhari’s current economic policies bear a stark resemblance of those he promulgated during the military regime he led in the 1980s, a former Minister of Education and social critic, Oby Ezekwesili, has said.
Mrs. Ezekwesili said Mr. Buhari’s “archaic” and “opaque” economic principles are not only encouraging massive corruption and abuse of power, but also hurting the poor they was intended to help.
Mrs. Ezekwesili said this at The Platform, a yearly public policy forum that is currently underway in Abuja.
“During the first coming of this our new president, a command and control economic system was adopted.
“During that era, inflation spiralled. During that era, jobs were lost. During that era, the economic growth level dipped,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said. “That era wasn’t the best of eras in economic progress.”
“What did not work in 1984 cannot possibly be a solution in a global economy that’s much more integrated.”
Mrs. Ezekwesili said Mr. Buhari was rehashing the same “command and control” approach towards economic issues which has left the country’s economic indices worse off since he assumed office almost year ago.
“In over one year, the president is still holding to the premise that command and control is the only way out,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said. “In a year we have lost the single digits inflation status we maintained in past administrations.”

Mrs. Ezekwesili said Mr. Buhari’s distortion of foreign exchange system has left the poor it was intended to support even worse off.
“The president comes into this economic philosophy on the premise that he does not want the poor to suffer. I can relate to that, a leader must, especially a leader who knows that most of his votes came not from the elite but from the poor.”
“The problem though is that the intention and the outcome are diverged.
“The weakest and the most vulnerable suffer the impact of inflation the most. Enormous power is being abused as a result of opaque economic policies.
“Companies are suddenly finding themselves unable to produce because they’re unable to access foreign exchange,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said.
Mrs. Ezekwesili, therefore, urged Mr. Buhari to sit down with his administration officials and reconsider the impact his polices have had on the nation’s economy, quoting an American parlance that says if something is not broken there’s no need fixing it”.
“Mr. President should sit with his team and look at the economic evidence that speaks loudly. It’s time to sit back and review the well-intended idea of command and control economic principle.
“He should do what the Americans say that if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said.
