If you’ll be driving on busy roads this holiday weekend, you might want to take note of a new study about traffic and air pollution: The research, conducted by the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, suggests that keeping car windows closed and fans switched off while stuck in slow-moving traffic jams can reduce your risk of exposure to toxic fumes by up to 76 percent.

Using the fan’s or air conditioner’s “recirculate” option ranked second best when researchers tested five different ventilation settings, and they say that this can also be a good choice for reducing exposure to pollutants.

The findings aren’t just applicable to weekend or vacation driving; in their paper, the study authors note that daily commuting time has increased over the years in Britain, where people spent about an hour each day driving to and from work in 2013. The numbers are similar in the United States: Americans spend an average of nearly 52 minutes on their round-trip commutes, according to 2013 government data.

Air pollution is considered among the top 10 health risks faced by humans by the World Health Organization, which attributes it to 7 million premature deaths a year. It’s an especially big problem in urban cities, the study authors write, where traffic-light intersections are known as “pollution hotspots that contribute disproportionately higher to overall commuting exposure.” Last year, the same researchers showed that drivers stuck at traffic lights were exposed to up to 29 times more harmful pollution particles than those driving in free-flowing traffic.

In London, they note, air pollution is estimated to kill more than 10 times the amount of people as automobile accidents. And in the United States, exposure to ambient particulate matter is the eighth leading cause of death.

The researchers wanted to study the effects of different vehicle ventilation systems on a driver’s or passenger’s exposure to both fine and coarse particulate matter—two types of pollution consisting of vehicle exhaust, ozone, and other toxins prevalent the air. So they performed readings both inside and outside a 2002 Ford Fiesta in Guildford, a “typical UK town” of about 137,000 residents, at busy three- and four-way traffic intersections during winter-season rush hours.

Five scenarios were studied, with different combinations of windows (open or closed), fan (off, partial speed, or full speed), and heat (off, low temperature, or high temperature). When it came to pollution exposure, results varied widely depending on the ventilation.

When driving with the windows open, particulate matter readings in the car were equal to those outside of the car. When the windows were rolled up and the fan was switched off, however, exposure to particulate matter was reduced by up to 76 percent.

“Where possible and with weather conditions allowing, it is one of the best ways to limit your exposure by keeping windows shut, fans turned off and to try and increase the distance between you and the car in front while in traffic jams or stationary at traffic lights,” said lead author Prashant Kumar, Ph.D., in a press release. “If the fan or heater needs to be on, the best setting would be to have the air re-circulating within the car without drawing in air from outdoors.”

Kumar’s study isn’t the first to suggest that hitting the recirculate button is a good option while stuck in traffic; a 2013 study from University of California researchers also came to similar conclusions. This was, however one of the first studies to test several different ventilation options head-to-head at busy urban intersections, specifically.

A British chef who ate the world’s hottest noodles – 4,000 times stronger than Tabasco sauce – went deaf for two minutes after scoffing the dish.

Ben Sumadiwiria, 22, from London, found the dish at a tiny back street restaurant in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The ‘death noodles’ have 100 bird’s eye chilies crushed together giving it a Scoville rating of 20 million – compared with hot Tabasco which is just 5,000 on the scale.

After Ben scoffed the noodles he started sweating, became dizzy, had to soak his head in water and even went deaf for two minutes.
The chef said: “This was definitely the hottest thing I’ve ever eaten. Within seconds of tasting them I was sweating and feeling sick.

“Everybody who tried them threw up outside in the drain. They’re known as ‘death noodles’ and some locals can even finish a whole plate, which is just crazy.

“We’ve done the calculations and these are definitely the hottest noodles in the world. They are definitely the hottest commercially available dish.

“I’m not really partial to spicy food but when somebody throws down a challenge I just can’t say no.

“I went temporarily deaf and my mouth was burning for hours afterwards.”

Ben, a full-time chef and video maker who has Indonesian parents and was visiting family in the area, paid 34 Indonesian Rupees (2p) for the plate of noodles and a fried egg.

One birds eye chili has a rating of 200,000 Scoville units, the measurement for a food’s hotness.

One hundred condensed together gives the ‘death noodles’ a combined rating of 20 million.

Ben became so hot after eating the noodles he had to take off his shirt and hold his head under water to cool off.

The 22-year-old downed half-a-dozen glasses of water, milkshake and ate a cold banana but was still dizzy from the intense heat in his mouth.

He lost his hearing for two minutes and threw up outside in the street several times.

Ben added: “You don’t really taste the noodles, it’s just pure heat with a tiny hint of noodles.

“My lips were burning and I couldn’t feel anything. I’ve eaten wasabi and plenty of other hot food, and I’d take that any day over those noodles.’

Worshippers have been left baffled after noticing a statue of the Virgin Mary crying at a university church in Honduras.

Priest Juan Angel Lopez said today that he was certain the weeping statue has not been faked – but he too had no idea what was causing the unusual occurrence.

People first noticed the strange goings on with the effigy at the Campus Santiago Apostle, in the Catholic University of Honduras at the weekend.

Spooky footage shows tears welling-up in the statue’s eyes before they eventually fall down its cheek.

Priest Lopez is then seen talking to the camera before wiping away the tears with a tissue.

Priest Lopez, who is the Pastor of the Iglesia Santo Domingo Savio church in nearby Tegucigalpa said he had seen the statue at the St James campus in the El Paraiso area.

He told Honduras website La Prensa : “I’m not saying it’s true, I’m saying it’s possible.

“In this case, I suspect that there is no falsehood because I know people who run the Campus Santiago Apostle.

“I know the seriousness of people who have recorded the video and do not think they would fake it.”

A YouTuber has shared his rather unusual method for getting rid of a headache or migraine – and people are swearing by it.

Kamil, who posts through YouTube channel Kamil’s View, says he can cure your pain in two minutes with just three questions.

In his online video tutorial he repeats the questions several times – claiming by the end of it, the headache should have disappeared.

In his video, seen more than 1.7million times, Kamil says: “I’m going to ask you a few questions, and I will ask you those questions a few times.

“Every time I ask you the question I really want you to have a look and answer the question.”

After instructing the viewer to think about their headache he asks: “Where is your headache?

He then follows this with “What colour is it?” and “What shape is it?”

After repeating the questions four times he says: “By now it should be gone.”

While the method may come across as unorthodox thousands of people are swearing by it.

1. Breasts are the new derrière

Evolutionary psychologists suggest that rounded buttocks evolved in women to provide a visual indication of youth and fertility. This is because oestrogen encourages fat storage in the buttocks, hips and thighs.

Biological anthropologist Bobbi S. Low says the buttocks "evolved in the context of females competing for the attention and parental commitment of powerful resource-controlling males" as an "honest display of fat reserves."

Sexologist Alfred Kind says that attraction to breasts stems from their similarity to the buttocks. This urge most likely developed around the time human beings started having sex face-to-face.

When a baby is breastfed by its mother, oxytocin ('the cuddle hormone') is released from the posterior pituitary gland, leading both participants to fall head-over-hells in love with each other, and therefore bond for life.

Sam Nassif and Oliver Greenwald from Denver, Colorado, first came up with the Drip Drop notion when they were 10.

They came second in statewide invention contest, The Gates Invention Program, in 2011, and by last year were granted a patent.

This year they have been seen on the hit show Shark Tank – like Dragon’s Den – and were selected from among 50,000 applicants.

The boys are the youngest entrepeneurs ever to pitch to the Sharks without an adult, and they impressed the hosts.

“We then noticed how their mom used a handful of napkins to try to clean them up. This image stayed in our minds and a few minutes later suddenly we both turned to each other and had the same thought: something should be done about that problem!”

It may look like the result of an ethically dubious genetic experiment, but this piranha-like fish is very real, and has taken up residence in one of America’s Great Lakes.

The Pacu fish , also known as “The Nut Cracker” and “The Ball-Cutter”, boasts a set of human-like teeth that allow it to eat nuts and seeds.

However, these fish have also been known to use their gnashers for something rather less appetising – chomping on human testicles.

Pacus are normally found in South America, but they have recently been spotted in Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes of North America.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said that, last month alone, it received three pacu reports – two from Lake St. Clair and one from the Port Huron area.

According to Nick Popoff, manager of the DNR’s Aquatic Species and Regulatory Affairs Unit, the pacus were probably released into the lake by pet-owners who no longer wanted to keep them.

Red-bellied pacus are popular aquarium fish, but they are known to grow significantly – often beyond the capacity of their tanks – and sometimes feed on other fish.

“Pet release is almost never humane,” said Nick Popoff, manager of the DNR’s Aquatic Species and Regulatory Affairs Unit.

“Pets released from confined, artificial environments are poorly equipped to fend off predators and may be unable to successfully forage for food or find shelter.

“Those that do succeed in the wild can spread exotic diseases to native animals.

At times, I feel downright sad to be a woman despite the fact that a high percentage of the men folk are of the opinion that women enjoy certain privileges than the men. I feel sad when womanhood is debased; I feel sad when some women give the men (who are themselves terrible) a chance to run us down. You see, I detest a situation whereby women lose their God-given respect and are trampled upon.

Sometimes ago, a beautiful young lady gained admission into a college of education some miles away from her place of abode with her husband and a kid. Having been seeking for admission for quite some time her husband didn’t put up much resistance when the opportunity finally came. All he obliged her to do was to employ a nanny who would take care of their only child. Having satisfied this condition, she went to resume school as a fresher.

Starting school was like a journey to freedom for this lady. No sooner did she resume than she got involved in a relationship with one of her lecturers with whom she engaged in numerous love escapades unabashedly. The lecturer in compensating her ensured that she scored high marks in his course and those handled by his friends. So trusting was this lady’s husband that he did not suspect any foul play despite numerous rumours filtering into his ears. He was of the opinion that his wife’s brilliant performance in school was based solely on her capabilities.

At a point in this lady’s relationship with her lecturer, she took in and without much thought to it went straight ahead to the doctor for a D&C. unfortunately for her, the operation was a bit complicated and so she had to stay in the hospital for sometime which necessitated her husband to come over especially as the period coincided with the end of the session when she had to go home for the holidays.
