Life imprisonment plus 30 years I don't understand this one o |
Fallen Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, once one of the world's most powerful and notorious criminals, has appealed his life sentence, court documents published on Monday showed. Guzman, the 62-year-old former co-leader of Mexico's feared Sinaloa drug cartel, was convicted in February of smuggling hundreds of tons of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States. On Wednesday last week, he was sentenced to life in prison in a New York federal courtroom, and sent to the notorious ADX federal maximum security prison in the US state of Colorado nicknamed the "Alcatraz of the Rockies."A symbolic 30 years was also added to the sentence and he was also ordered to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture -- a sum based on a conservative estimate of revenues from his cartel's sales in the United States. Guzman's new lawyer, Marc Fernich, filed an appeal the next day, documents show. "Guzman has strong issues for appeal. We'll fight to overturn his conviction and are confident we'll prevail," Fernich told AFP via email. A decision by an appeals judge could take up to a year. Guzman -- whose moniker "El Chapo" translates as "Shorty" -- is considered the most influential drug lord since Colombia's Pablo Escobar, who was killed in a police shootout in 1993. He was extradited from Mexico to the United States in January 2017. Current ADX inmates include convicted "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski, Oklahoma City bomber Terry Nichols, the British "shoe bomber" Richard Reid and the Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is awaiting execution. |

Abia state government says it has introduced a policy directing relevant agencies to scrutinize and ascertain the purpose behind the sale of lands more than five hectares in the state. Mr. Uche Ihediwa, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state, said the policy made it mandatory for applications for Certificate-of-Occupancy for such a purchase. He said: “With the present dispensation, any request for land will have to be scrutinized. “The state government’s policy is to scrutinize it and make sure that it is not something that is convertible into Ruga. We have gone ahead to sensitize our communities to be sure that nobody sells a large quantity of land. “There is a standing instruction in the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Urban Planning that sale of any land above five hectares will be scrutinized." Ihediwa added, “Sometime in September 2014, the Federal Ministry of Works, Transport and Housing requested land to build a trailer park. “There was nothing untoward about the request by the federal government under the administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. “They were looking for 50 hectares of land in that place but we went round and discovered it was only 20 hectares.” According to him, the negotiation was subsequently aborted and the land penciled down for a car assembly plant. |

WHATSAPP users are being warned over a dangerous type of “malware” that swaps your chat app with a hacked version. Experts warn that 25million WhatsApp users who own Android smartphones have been affected – putting them at risk of being spied on by hackers. The malware is called “Agent Smith”, and replaces your WhatsApp with a dodgy version that serves you up advertisements – earning money for crooks. However, experts say the malware leaves you open to more dangerous hack attacks, and could hand your private info to hackers on a plate. For most users, the fake WhatsApp will simply be a major nuisance. It will serve up “malicious” ads at random times, which are difficult or impossible to quit. Fake WhatsApp? How to check if yours is dodgy... Here's what you need to know... The main way to spot a problem is if you notice ads at weird times. In particular, if you receive ads when you open WhatsApp then there’s a problem. That’s because the standard version of WhatsApp doesn’t serve ads – though some users may see ads in Stories. If you suspect a dodgy app, check your app list for suspicious items like Google Updater or Google Installer. If you find one, uninstall it.If you have an infected app, follow these steps…Android: Go to Settings Menu Click on Apps or Application Manager Scroll to the suspected app and uninstall it If it can’t be found then remove all recently installed apps Once that’s done, uninstall WhatsApp from your phone and reinstall it completely through the official Google Play Store.Don’t forget to back up your chats before your uninstall WhatsApp, or you risk losing them. |

More than a month after Nipsey Hussle’s shock murder, hitmaker DJ Khaled has released a music video for their joint track “Higher” featuring footage of the rapper filmed days before his death. “Recently, I embarked on a soul-searching journey down a road I never thought I would travel in a million years. It began when a tragedy robbed the world of an enlightened soul, a brother, a father, a partner and my friend, Nipsey Hussle,” Khaled said on Instagram. “Just days prior, he shared his energy and positivity with me on a video set for a song called, ‘Higher,'” the music promoter continued. “After much prayer and reflection; and with the full blessing of the Asghedom family, I am sharing that moment with the world.” Khaled said all proceeds from the gospel-tinged song would go to Hussle’s children, Emani and Kross.
