Buhari: The Man Who Fulfilled His Dreams… But Killed Many Others Muhammadu Buhari, once a military head of state and later Nigeria’s democratically elected president, finally achieved his long-sought ambition, leading the country, first in 2015 and again in 2019. But as he celebrates that personal triumph in death, we must also remember the millions whose dreams were crushed during his eight-year rule. A Long-Awaited Success On his fourth attempt, Buhari defeated Goodluck Jonathan, becoming the first opposition candidate to win the presidency (The Street Journal, AP News). He came in with promises: Combat corruption Defeat Boko Haram Revitalize the economy Yet, while he achieved the personal milestone of presidency, his administration’s shortcomings left lasting wounds. Economy in Reverse Under Buhari: Two recessions (2016 and 2020)—the first in decades (ICIR News, Reuters) Inflation surged—from ~9 % (2015) to over 22 % by 2023, with food prices more than doubling (ICIR News) Unemployment spiked—overall at 33 %, youth joblessness around 54 % Poverty skyrocketed—from ~40 % to over 60 % of Nigerians living in poverty (ICIR News) As everyday Nigerians struggled to feed their families, many felt forgotten even as the president met his own aspirations. Security Unravelling Despite initial victories against Boko Haram—like freeing some Chibok girls—extremism and daily violence worsened: Over 50 000 deaths from insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes (Vanguard News, AP News) Multiple zones—northwest, southeast—plagued by kidnappings, herder-farmer violence, separatist activity (BTI 2024) Mass shootings and civilian deaths, including during #EndSARS and Shia protests (Wikipedia) Promise of security drifted into disappointment for communities across Nigeria. Rights, Freedoms, and Governance Buhari’s administration grew increasingly intolerant: Crackdowns on protest—violent suppression of #EndSARS, Shia protests (AP News, Reuters) Social media bans—Twitter/X banned mid-2021 to early 2022 (BTI 2024) Pressure on media—license suspensions, indefinite detentions (BTI 2024) His dream of leadership became a nightmare of shrinking freedoms. Debt & Economic Mismanagement Buhari’s tenure saw public debt jump from ₦42 trillion to ₦77 trillion by 2023 (The Budgit Foundation). More than 80 % of national revenue went into servicing debt (The Budgit Foundation). Poor fiscal policies—currency manipulation, subsidy mismanagement—deepened the economic quagmire . Impact on Mental Health The ripple effects of insecurity, inflation, corruption took a mental health toll: Rise in trauma from violence, displacement, suicides (HEALTHFORTY) Anxiety, depression soared amid rising poverty and hopelessness (Financial Times) Buhari may have lived his dream—but the weight of societal suffering was his legacy to bear. A Polarised Nation in Mourning With his passing in London on July 13, 2025, reactions across Nigeria are split. While his family mourns, many Nigerians remain unmoved: “The uneven response…is a reflection of…his inability to unite a country” (AP News) This quiet response reflects deep-seated disillusionment. Final Thoughts Muhammadu Buhari’s journey from a failed military ruler to a democratically elected president is remarkable. He achieved personal vindication. But for large segments of Nigeria, what was won in title was lost in substance. He fulfilled his dreams—but in their pursuit, countless others were left behind. As Nigerians reflect on his legacy, we must ask: What kinds of dreams are worth pursuing? Must our personal triumphs always come at the expense of collective hardship? Let’s honor his passing by recommitting to leadership that uplifts rather than diminishes. By fostering unity, equity, opportunity—not just achieving power. Just seeing. It can easily treated. Cut raw aloe Vera put inside water leave it for 10 to 20 minute. Drink the water morning and night. Also rub the aloe Vera jell on your body atleast for 2 hours before you take your bath. It will be very bitter but give it 1 to 2 weeks then come back and share your testimony. This is confirmed medication. Enjoy |
