We know the wahala http://transparentnigeria.com/news_entries/91/How-Was-Your-Holiday-Travel
How Was Your Holiday Travel?

Anyone who traveled home for the holiday by road should really thank Father Christmas because driving in Nigeria is quite an experience. Any foreigner who tours around Nigeria by road would probably resolve to write their biography as soon as they return home having survived a near death experience!

The most astonishing thing about Nigeria’s roads is not their dilapidated state, but how accustomed to potholed roads we Nigerians have become. Honestly, it’s sometime fun to go bouncing and galloping along roads that really could be death traps. It’s one way to feel alive.

But in all seriousness, for those of us who cannot afford to fly, which has it’s own wahala, the state of our roads is truly worrisome. In fact, in the eastern part of Nigeria,, some states are in the verge of losing their connections with other states due to how bad the roads are.

Driving form Enugu to Port-Harcout along the dual carriage-way lane seems like an endless journey filled with horrible scenes of freshly happened accidents that have claimed so many lives. Just check the pictures in the slider for proof. For other federal roads it is the same story. See the Lagos-Ibadan express road, Lagos-Onitsha express road, and so many others.

Since the Enugu-Port Harcourt express road wad built in the 80s, there has never been any major rehabilitation. This has raised a lot of questions among Nigerians on why the road has just been left as is. The ironic thing is that this road is awarded a contract for rehabilitation each year. In 2013 alone, the road has been awarded more than two times to different construction companies, including Julius Berger who won the contract in August. However, there is still no sign of true maintenance. All one can see are graders and bulldozers pretending to be employed on a massive rehabilitation project. I don’t even see workers! Before we get to the middle of 2014, I am sure that the work will be abandoned for one excuse or the other. I hazard a guess that it’ll be the need for more money.

But the real question now is who do we as suffering citizens question? The federal government (re: Federal Road Maintenance Agency) or the contractors? What could be the reason why no one bothers to fix our roads? Is it that they don’t have enough men to survey the 1000+ potholes we swerve to avoid or is it that the federal government doesn't release adequate funds for maintenance?

Or, God forbid, is it that the money allocated for these road projects has been diverted into personal accounts? Is it a deliberate act to further subjugate the poor masses?

One thing is for sure, you cannot blame Nigerians for being cynical.

TravelTop 14 Road Safety Tips In This Festive Period by lovelymind(op):
Top 14 Road Safety Tips
1. Safety is not in your hands, pray to God, to protect, guide and bless your journey. Because the journey you want to embark on is not by your power

2. Festival journey is not like your other usual journey you embark in an ordinary month so you need to prepare two hour before your usual time because of traffic and many people are in the same journey with you
3. Make sure that, the car you want to apply on the road is good enough to cover the distance you want it to cover

4. Check the water level in your radiator together with the oil level and never forget to likewise check the air level in your tyre .

5. Avoid to eat things that will upset your stomach to avoid driver pls stop driver pls stop ...... Let me visit my ancestors in the bush.

6. Good things have it own demerits and might kill if misused, phone is good but Don't use your mobile phone while driving. Making ,receiving a call ,nairalanding , pinging or whatsapping even using a 'hands free' phone, can distract your attention from driving and could lead to an accident. And if u will answer the call pls stop and pack very well .
7. Belt up in the back In a collision, an unbelted rear passenger can kill or seriously injure the driver or a front seat passenger.

8. Your habit might indanger your life and others, if you are such a type who can't do with out alcohol a.k.a ogogoro kindly ask your friend who don't drink to help you. Don't drink and drive. Any alcohol, even a small amount , can impair your driving so be a safe driver don't drink and drive.

9. Slow down At 35mph you are twice as likely to kill a pedestrian than at 30mph. Especially here that people rare cattuals in our roads rather than fortress.

10. Take a break Tiredness is thought to be a major factor in more than 10% of road accidents. Plan to stop for at least a 15 minute break every 2 hours on a long journey.

11. Make use of road signs and symbols eg. Speed limits, zebra crossing etc . Pls all these symbols are not for fancy. Adhere to it

12. Anticipate Observe and anticipate other road users and use your mirrors regularly. Note side and center mirrors are not for making up .

13. Use car seats, Child and baby seats should be fitted properly and checked every trip.

14. Keep your distance Always, keep a two second gap between you and the car in front.

pls feel free to add more tips and be your brothers keeper so that we can make this festival period a blissful one.

Christianity EtcThere Is Nothing Like Rapture, There Is No Hell Fire – Pastor Blessed Dikeh by lovelymind(op): 3:49pm On Dec 15, 2013
I know that we have great intellectuals in this forum and we can't allow any one to take us for a ride..
This pastor has come out with another controversial issues that want to tear me apart . Pls we need a constructive argument on this issues against or for this below subject.

Founder of “As The Lord Said, It Should Be Done Temple” Blessed Oguguamakwa Dikeh has declared that Christians should forget about the second coming of Jesus Christ (rapture), saying that it would never come to pass.

The cleric recently came under heavy criticism by Nigerians over his strange biblical beliefs and the purported serving of alcohol in his church.

The controversial cleric in an Interview with Daily Independent asserted that, “There is nothing like rapture. If you tell me that rapture means when a person dies, his soul goes back to God and his flesh to the dust, then I will agree, but anything other than that, I don’t agree. Don’t let anybody deceive you.

He also argued that there’s no hell fire after death.

He voiced his conviction thus, “There is nothing like hell fire after life. Heaven is here on earth already. When you are suffering, you are in hell fire. If you are in poverty and cannot pay your house rent then you are already in hell. But when you are in heaven, even if you reside in a flat, your landlord will come and beg you for money. He would even say don’t worry, I will give the other tenant quit notice for you.”

Speaking further, the preacher said he doesn’t pray with the name of Jesus, saying that Jesus was also a servant like him.

Hear him, “I pray in the name of God, because my father, Adam, did not pray in Jesus’ name. Jesus is a servant like me. He has finished his assignment and has gone. I am a servant too. When I finish my work, I will go. Jesus has done a good job, but I have problem with people who are giving him the honour that is not due him. If you say Jesus is the saviour of the whole world, who then is God?”

PoliticsJonathan Bounces Back, Appears On Day 2 Of London Conference by lovelymind(op): 6:35am On Nov 23, 2013
After a brief illness and medical check-up on Thursday, President Goodluck Jonathan Friday made a surprise appearance at the Hilton Hotel (London) venue of the two-day Nigeria Honorary International Investors' Council meeting and finally delivered his speech. grin grin (the plans of the enemies)

Jonathan arrived the venue of the event at about 9:30 am in company with the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Senator Dalhatu Tafida.

Clad in a black stripped traditional South-South attire and bowler hat to match, Jonathan did not display any sign of weakness as he shook hands with members of the council and the coordinator, Baroness Lynda Chalker, before he took his seat after the national anthem.

The President apologised to members of the council for his absence on the opening day due to “ill health” and added that he was now strong enough to attend yesterday's session.

While addressing the meeting, Jonathan said his administration had made giant strides in a bid to attract new investors into the country, adding that he would continue to encourage existing investors within the country to expand.

Said Jonathan: "In 2014, we must not lose this momentum, but rather broaden our interventions to address other difficult issues like the high cost of financing in the country and the dearth of adequate skills.

"This 15th meeting builds on the last conversation we had in Abuja and begins to address the fundamental issues constraining competitiveness and investment in Nigeria. Competitiveness ultimately drives profitability, which is what investors are seeking worldwide.

"To be competitive, we must address long standing issues and introduce bold and courageous reforms, regardless of short term political pressures. This is why my government has remained steadfast in making Nigeria the preferred location for investors to do business. "In building a truly competitive environment for business, we are addressing the fundamental issues such as internal security and power supply head-on. For the first time in Nigeria's 53 year history, we have successfully privatized the electric power industry.”

He said his administration was bringing capital, technology and operational excellence into the power sector and that 11 distribution companies and four generation companies had been privatized, realising over US$3 billion for the government.

Said the President: For Council’s information, the power assets were finally handed over on 1st November, 2013. I am delighted to inform you that investors are responding positively to the opportunities in the sector and we expect to see significant investments in the sector and across the value chain going forward. Ladies and gentlemen, resolving the power sector alone, completely changes the paradigm on doing business in Nigeria, and we are satisfied with the progress made.”

On security, Jonathan admitted that there were still challenges but that his administration had been investing in the requisite security infrastructure and intelligence network that would enable the country deal more effectively with the new threats faced which he said could hamper investor confidence in our economy.

Said the President: "In ensuring that the environment is suitable for investment, we will also continue to intensify the fight against corruption. We are indeed happy that the private sector has begun complementing our strong desire to tackle all forms of rent-seeking tendencies. The ‘Clean Business Nigeria Today’ initiative coming from the meetings of the Council is a very good example.

"I also use this opportunity to inform Council that Nigeria will be hosting the World Economic Forum on Africa, between the 7th and 9th of May 2014.

"Our hosting this event is yet again a strong sign of Nigeria’s central economic and political role on the continent. The forthcoming World Economic Forum will be used to shape matters of inclusive growth on the continent and I invite all members of Council to join us in Abuja in May 2014."

Jonathan further briefed the council on measures so far taken to secure additional sources of financing for essential development projects in Nigeria.

The President also participated in a discussion of the presentation by the Minister of Communications Technology on the development of ICT infrastructure in Nigeria.

Baroness Lynda Chalker, coordinator of the council told the President that its members felt much more positive about the opening up of investment opportunities in Nigeria.

She said that the attendance at the ongoing meeting of the council was the highest ever in its history and that its members were very excited about the emerging potentials of the Nigerian economy.

US to make visa application process easier for Nigerians

The US Consul-General, Mr Jeffery Hawkins, on Wednesday, said that the American government was determined to make visa application process easier for Nigerians. Hawkins said this in a paper he presented at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos, on “US and Nigeria Bilateral Relationship.” He said that the move was part of the government’s effort at promoting “people-to-people” relationship between Nigeria and the US. He said that the consulate had recruited additional staff and installed new equipment in order to facilitate visa processing for Nigerians. ``My goal is to make visa application process painless and pleasant for Nigerians. “I am happy to say that the waiting time for Non-Immigrant Visa appointment is now just a fraction of what it once was. “We can always improve; but I am proud of the work we have done to serve our Nigeria visa applicants, `` he said. The envoy also restated the commitment of the US to create opportunities for young Nigerians to visit the US. Hawkins said that the government had concluded an arrangement to invite “very special set of Nigerian guests” to the US in 2014. He further said that the US government would continue to sustain its bilateral relations with Nigeria in the years ahead. Hawkins said that a US delegation, led by Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Ambassador Wendy Sherma, would be in Abuja on August 15, for the US and Nigeria Binational Commission.

PoliticsI Prefer Prison To Home An Inmate Lamented -sylvester Obata by lovelymind(op): 1:02pm On Jul 21, 2013
It was a pathetic drama in the Owerri High Court premises Friday morning when an inmate who is believed to have awaited trial in prison for upwards of seven years was acquitted of any wrong doing and discharged by an Owerri Magistrate Court.

Instead of the usual jubilation that follow any ruling of ‘discharged and acquitted’, crimefacts.org gathered that the said inmate, Sylvester Obata (not real names); wearing a long face, headed straight for the Prison van that brought them to court, only to be intercepted by a prison guard who reminded him he was free to go home.

To the chagrin of eyewitnesses, Obata said he was going nowhere demanding to be allowed entry into the Prison Van back to prison.

The prison guard who mistook Obata’s statement for a weird joke was jolted when he tried to push him away from the prison van and was defiantly resisted by the freed inmate.

What seemed like a mild drama turned nearly absurd when the calm of the court premises was shattered by Obata’s shouts and pleas to be allowed to go back to prison and he thrashed about and struggled with several prison officials who wanted him out of the court and on his way home.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to crimefacts.org, it took the effort of over six prison officials, court workers and policemen to get the freed inmate out of the court premises. Obata who refused to budge even in the face of threats of brutality by security men, had to be dragged on the floor while he raised hell in the court premises.

Outside the prison, Obata sustained his raving, telling whoever cared to listen why he should be allowed to remain in jail. According to him, setting him free was no big deal, but his plight outside prison is what the court should have also considered.

Said he, “I have no place to go or anybody to go to. I have no job or business.I want to go back to prison where I can at least be sure to eat something everyday.”

The evidently apprehensive former prison inmate, demanded to see the Chief Judge of the state to plead his case himself and explain to him why it was better to keep him in prison than outside prison.

Slightly after mid-day, when crimefacts.org news sources went to check the outcome of the agitation of the former inmate, nobody seemed to know what became of him and his demands to be taken back to jail or to the state Chief Judge.

"I will build a school that is better than home so that school children will have no reason to go back home"-Rochas Okorocha
On the other hand, i think he has built a prison that is better than home that is why the inmate don't want to go home. Or what do you think huh huh huh

PoliticsPresidency: Why Nigeria Can’t Stop Sudan’s Al-bashiroo by lovelymind(op): 11:59pm On Jul 15, 2013
Published on July 15, 2013 by · No Comments Nigeria’s presidency on Monday defended welcoming Sudan President Omar al-Bashir to the country for an African Union health summit despite war crimes charges against him, saying it cannot interfere in AU affairs.

Bashir arrived in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday for the summit on HIV/AIDS, turberculosis and malaria despite being wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

The summit is due to take place on Monday and Tuesday. Rights activists in Nigeria say they plan to go to court on Monday in an effort to force Bashir’s arrest.

“The event that is taking place is an AU summit,” Reuben Abati, spokesman for Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, told AFP.

“Nigeria is just hosting it. It’s not Nigeria that invited him. He’s not here on a bilateral visit. He’s here to participate in an AU summit, and Nigeria is not in a position to determine who attends an AU event and who does not attend an AU event … Nigeria is just providing the platform for the meeting.”

The Hague-based ICC in 2009 and 2010 issued two warrants against Bashir over the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region, where government forces and local Arab militias have been pitted against rebels drawn mainly from non-Arab populations. In 2008, the United Nations estimated that 300,000 people had died because of the conflict, but Khartoum disputes the figure.

Since Nigeria is a member of the ICC, it technically has a legal obligation to arrest suspects wanted by the court.

Some African Union members and officials have criticised the Bashir indictments, and the body has passed a resolution calling on members not to cooperate with the warrants.

The court has been accused of unfairly targeting Africans and some have argued that the arrest warrants against Bashir complicate peace efforts.

Bashir has previously visited ICC member states, including Chad, Djibouti and Kenya, but countries like South Africa and Botswana have ensured he stay away.

Human Rights Watch has said the AU resolution to ignore the warrants has “no bearing on Nigeria’s obligations as an ICC member.”

Hosting Bashir is an “affront to victims” of the Darfur conflict, said Elise Keppler of the International Justice Program at Human Rights Watch.
