My elder brother needs advice. Leke is our first son but he is last to marry out of four siblings. Everyone has been on his case to find someone and settle down but he has never been quite successful in relationships. So you can imagine the family’s joy when he told us he was getting married to Kate, that he had dated for seven months prior. Leke is already 41 years old. Very intelligent and one of the reasons, his career has taken him several places that he never really settled down. Some of the girls he even dated in the past were not good for him. But Kate seemed like a very good girl, very homely and kind. Everyone loved her and Leke loved her alot too. But in October 2021, which was supposed to be their wedding day, on their wedding day, Kate broke my brother’s heart. Kate abandoned my brother at the alter and did not show up for the wedding without warning. Everyone was thrown into confusion. It was even trending on social media that week. We kept asking Leke what he did to annoy her. Leke was confused as well. He said they never had any issue that they both spoke on the phone that wedding morning. After that horrible disgrace, Leke did everything in his power to find out from Kate what the issue was but this girl refused to tell Leke or any member of my family or her family why she changed her mind in the last minute. Leke was depressed. He could not eat, he could not go to work for weeks. This heartbreak almost killed my brother. We have been praying for him, telling him God knows best, maybe the marriage was not God’s will. Some people carried rumors that Leke was cursed and can never get married in life. It was barely a month ago that I started noticing that Leke was finally finding his feet and all of a sudden Kate is back! Me and Leke are the closest in the family. He tells me alot of things. So, my brother asked me to come see him yesterday after work, I knew he was serious. Leke told me that Kate called him two weeks ago to say she was ready to tell him what happened. My mother introduced me to her boyfriend, Trey, for the first time when I was 18 years old. It was the beginning of my senior year in high school and I was pretty innocent in many ways. Even though I had started to date by that time and even had tried c3x once or twice, I was a pretty naïve teenager. Mom and I had been alone since my father died when I was 9 and since then, she hadn’t dated much. Actually, I don’t remember her dating at all until Trey came along. I’m certain that she grieved for my dad for way too long, which explains my extreme happiness when my mom came home from work one day and informed me that she had met a new man. I remember that day vividly because I was always concerned that my mom would be alone for the rest of her life. Now, I should explain that my mom wasn’t ugly or a b-!tch or anything. In fact, she was (and still is) quite beautiful and nice, and many younger men asked out my mom during this time, not realizing that she was already in her mid-30’s. The fact that she frequently exercised in order to maintain her cute body helped attract a fair amount of men. And her long, wavy, golden blonde hair, large br3@sts, flat stomach, and flawless complexion probably worked to her advantage as well (characteristics I am proud to say I inherited, although I am a bit shorter than her at 5’4”). I remember occasionally, some people thinking my mom was my older sister, which, of course, always made my mom’s day. Anyway, my mom had been fixed up with Trey, a (cough) used car salesman, by one of her married friends. I remember thinking what a curious match for her- a used car salesman. Since my mom is a lawyer, I always figured someone with more education would be most ideal for her. Anyway, my mom and Trey had already gone out on a few dates and she wanted me to meet him that next Saturday night. Mom seemed quite excited about Trey and I was anxious to meet him. Perhaps our blind optimism contributed to the chaos that followed. I’m not sure. But I can say that our lives were never the same after Trey entered our lives. Saturday night finally arrived and it was refreshing to see my Mom all made up for her date. She kept asking me for make-up and clothing advice and for once, I felt like the parent in our relationship. By the time Trey rang the doorbell, I can honestly say that my mom looked hot. I was sitting in the living room, watching television when I heard my mom open the front door and greet Trey. “You look fantastic, Linda!” a loud, masculine voice came from the hallway. “Thank-you,” I heard my mom answer. “Come… I want you to meet my daughter.” I could tell from the way she spoke that she was embarrassed by his compliment. My mom subsequently led Trey into the living room. A handsome man, Trey stood about 6’2”, with short, dark hair, brown eyes, olive complexion, and a muscular build. With his thick, dark mustache, he sort of resembled Tom Selleck, I thought. He looked about 40 years old and was dressed casually, yet stylish. “Trey, I would like you to meet my daughter, Jessica,” my mom announced proudly. Trey smiled and looked directly into my eyes. He reached out for my hand and I accepted it. “Well, it is quite a pleasure to meet you, Jessica. I feel as if I know you already from what your mom has told me.” Trey shook my hand firmly and seemed to hold it a couple seconds too long. “Yeah…It’s nice to meet you, too.” I said timidly. I broke eye contact with Trey after it became a bit uncomfortable. I then looked at my mom and asked, “So where are you guys going tonight?” My mom turned to Trey, “Dinner at Gibsons, right?” “Yep, I made reservations for 8 o’clock sharp.” My mom glanced down at her watch and then back at me, “Ok, then. We better get going. There’s money on the counter to order a pizza later, if you want.” “Thanks, mom,” I answered. “Ok, we’re going then. I love you, Sweety,” She leaned over and gave me a k!$s on the cheek. “Love you, too, Mom. Have a good time!” I looked up at Trey who was still gazing at me. I thought I caught him checking out my b00bs, but I managed to blurt out, “It was nice to meet you.” “Likewise, Jessica. It was very nice to meet you! I’ll see you later,” Trey announced as he leaned over and gave me a k-!$s on the cheek. The Corpers were known for different mannerisms in the village. The most notable of them was w..0manizing or I should rightly say, girlizing. It was very easy for the male Corpers to chase girls since they had little or no distraction in the village. The electricity project that was started was abandoned for three years; all we’d heard were promises upon promises by the Government. For this reason, the Corpers often got depressed in the village. They told us about the need to always charge their phones, watch TV to know what was happening in the country and the world. They also told us they miss watching movies. All my life in the village, I hardly saw a lighted bulb in the afternoon. I often saw it at night, when the little generators made their annoying crackling sounds. For those that had fuel in their tank, they would always disturb the peace of the village with their generators. Fuel was a big issue even for the Corpers. They found it difficult to keep fuelling the generators in their home every day. Even worse, the Government had increased the price of fuel by a whooping hundred percent. This meant that we had to pay extremely more than what we normally paid. The price of fuel in our village had always been more than the Government-stipulated price because we often buy from black marketers. Even when you go outside, to the main roads to buy from the fuel stations, you will be shocked by what you would see. They claim to sell per litre but the metres of their machines have been adjusted in such a way that they measure below one litre at prices that are even more than the stipulated price. The Corpers had often complained about this instance of cheating. According to them, everything in the village was ruled by corruption. The day we all resumed for the term was when I saw Corper Tunde. He was one of the newly posted ones. I had an instant crush on him. It was like something steered me on the inside when I saw him. He was of average height, with smooth light skin and a deep voice. He taught us Literature and had often complained about our bad English. Sometimes he would not be able to help the laughter that often crawled into his throat because of our poor English. Most of us knew how to speak only broken English. For instance, when we wanted to go out of class we would say, ‘I wan commot.’ He was the one that taught us how to say, ‘Excuse me, Sir, may I go out.’ He added that if we wanted to use the toilet, we should say, ‘I want to ease myself’ as against, ‘I wan go toilet.’ That was if there was a toilet. All we had as a toilet was the bush behind our school. That was where we relieved ourselves—both the minor and major call of nature. The Principal of the school tried to no avail to have us build an improvised toilet. I remember we had once gathered sheaves together and tied them over two large holes. Unfortunately, when the dry season approached and bushes were being burnt, our sheaves were burnt along with the grasses. The principal eventually gave up on the plan. Because of this, the back of our school building remained our toilet and smelled really bad. Since 2014, Whenever I see people asking me to marry quickly, I smile and realise most people don’t know the full story. I am not saying people should stop asking the question. Not at all; I always find the probings very amusing and it always makes me laugh. However, I think it will be good to tell this story here for everyone to know. . It was February this year that I was hoping to have my wedding ceremony and start my marital life at once; but I guess Heaven had other plans. I only started to really pray about God’s choice for me as life partner in 2014; when I was rounding off my NYSC. I remember that my corpers fellowship organized a program as send-off for us, outgoing Corp members in the state capital; and it was during the singing of hymns that I had my prayers for a wife answered. A sister, almost as tall as I was, sat beside me throughout the program and I later found out she was one of the new batch of corpers. As we sang that afternoon, I smiled in wonder at her voice and I pleasantly commented on it. She smiled and thanked me; and we talked in bits till the program ended. She congratulated me as we dispersed and I was glad to have met her. I had almost turned away to leave when I remembered one of the stories I had written here; and thus, I decided to ask her name. ‘Toyin’, she said. And I also told her my name. Later in the evening, I was traveling back to my local government of primary assignment when I recalled the memories of the program and felt something move within me. I felt a sort of voice nudging me to pursue the beautiful and smiling sister Toyin I had just met some moments ago. I tried again and again to dispel the voice but it grew clearer. Two hours later, I was back in my room; yet the voice still urged me on. And when I could no longer resist, I had to call the leader of the corper’s fellowship and told him to send the pictures we took during the program. I was hoping to have her identity and beautiful look stored on my phone so I could ask people about her. And that was exactly what I did. Long story short, three months later, I had left the state but I was strongly connected to Toyin. I have to confess here and now that I really loved Toyin; especially during the first few months we grew close. I called her every other day and I missed her very much whenever she wasn’t online to chat. I knew deep within me that I loved her. About two months afterwards, I was back at my state of service to attend a program and I called Toyin to meet up with me. I had intended to tell her about my plans for marriage and seek her opinions about it. I was already at the garden and park where we planned to meet when she called. ‘Victor, I will not be able to come today. I have a church service.’ she said.
