The Abia State House of Assembly Speaker , Chikwendu Kalu , on Saturday , allegedly ordered some policemen in the state to shoot officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps on patrol . Eyewitnesses said that the speaker gave the order when the FRSC officers stopped the Sport Utility Vehicle his wife was travelling in along the Umuikaa /Aba - Port Harcourt Expressway . “ When the vehicle was stopped (by the FRSC officials ) , the driver refused to stop, only for him to stop at a distance . “ The driver reversed the vehicle and it was discovered that a woman in the passenger seat in front, is an officer of the Department of State Services attached to the governor ’s wife . “ The DSS officer ran towards the officer who stopped the vehicle , held him by uniform and dragged him to the ground , accusing him of hitting their vehicle , ” The source added that the speaker ’s wife allegedly joined the policemen to beat the official. “ One of them called the speaker whose village is nearby . He then came with some policemen . He ordered them to shoot the armless officers who were sitting inside the patrol vehicle and mercilessly beat up the team leader. “ The policemen also forcefully opened the patrol vehicle and went away with the battery . They left the team leader and the other officials that were shot on the road. Other road users helped them to the hospital , ” said the source . The FRSC Corps Public Education Officer , Bisi Kazeem , confirmed the incident. He said the case had been “ reported to the commissioner of police in the state for further investigations and that it won ’t deter the FRSC from saving lives on the highways .” When contacted , the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker Mr . Okey Chikwendu promised to confirm the incident and get back to our correspondent . He had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report . Efforts to get the state Police Public Relations Officer , Mr . Geofrey Ogbonna , were unsuccessful as he neither picked calls made to his mobile nor responded to the text message sent.

The All Progressives Congress National Vice - Chairman ( North - East ), Alhaji Mustapha Salihu , said the Supreme Court judgment resolving the leadership tussle in the PDP , was not a threat to the APC . He said this at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday. The party chieftain said it didn ’t matter who led the PDP , the party , as a platform, had lost credibility . Salihu added , “ You assume that it is about Ali Modu Sheriff and Makarfi or anybody else ? It is not so . The issue is this , what you look at is the party as an institution . “ This is an institution that institutionalised corruption . This is an institution that distroyed our infrastructure . This is an institution that distroyed our security . We are not threatened by anybody that is left of that institution. ” But the Organising Secretary of the PDP in the South - West, Mr . Fasiu Bakene , described the judgment as a good foundation for democracy . Bakene stated , “ The Supreme Court ’s judgment today is a clear and solid foundation for the sustenance of democratic rule in Nigeria . “ With this judgment , the Senator Ahmed Makarfi caretaker committee should immediately put the PDP in its rightful position of giving good governance to Nigerians irrespective of tribe , religion or political affiliation . ” |
The # BringBackOurGirls advocacy group said on Thursday that nine out of the 82 Chibok girls rescued recently were not on their list. It stated that the names of six out of the nine girls were found on the West African Examination Council results sheet, while three were missing. A member of the # BBOG and Chairman, Chibok Community in Abuja, Hosea Tsambido , who stated this during the group ’s sitout in Abuja, believed the girls ’ parents gave them different names during the collation of the girls ’ statistics after the abduction . Tsambido said , “ We believed that some of the rescued girls were using different names from the names they registered their WAEC with . That is why we cannot match the names of the nine rescued girls with the ones we collected after the abduction . “ Amongst the nine girls , six of the names appeared on the WAEC result list . Maybe their parents gave different names when their statistics where being taken after the abduction while the other three names are not on the WAEC or # BBOG list. So maybe the names they gave were different from the ones on the WAEC list . “ One example is the case of Maida Yakubu . Everyone knows her as Maida but her real name is Dorcas . If she had been rescued , you will realise that the name Maida will not be on the list . Many of the girls I believe may be like that.” http://punchng.com/nine-rescued-chibok-girls-not-on-our-list-bbog/

In the interim, we ask all members and supporters to remain steadfast in prayers for Nigeria . “ Meanwhile, we continue with our avowed demands that the party must be given back to the owners at the grassroots to always elect their party officials and those to contest elections for them at all levels . Internal democracy must be institutionalized in the party .” Sheriff was removed by a five- man panel of justices of the Supreme Court and installed the Senator Ahmed Makarfi - led National Caretaker Committee as the authentic leader of the former ruling party . His sacking ended the 18 - month leadership crisis in the party . http://punchng.com/breaking-im-in-shock-over-supreme-court-judgement-says-sheriff/

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic , Moshood Abiola Polytechnic , Abeokuta chapter , grounded academic activities at the institution on Wednesday following alleged directive by the Technical Committee set up by the Ogun State government to upgrade the institution to a university status . They had alleged that the committee which is saddled with the task of overseeing the transition of MAPOLY to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology , headed by Prof . Peter Okebukola , had issued a directive ordering the sack of over 250 lecturers in the institution to turn in their resignation letters and reapply . However , in a swift reaction , Prof. Okebukola refuted the claims of the lecturers stating that they were in contrast to the position of the committee . The lecturers who protested within and outside the institution’ s campus locked the gate and blocked it with two vehicles , chanting solidarity songs . They had arrived the campus as early as 7 am, and placed fetish objects inside two calabashes containing dead snakes , sugarcane sticks , and local fowl eggs drenched in palm oil , in front of the school gate . The lecturers were also armed with placards with various inscriptions such as “ Okebukola must go ” and “ MAUSTECH must stay . ” They prevented vehicles from either leaving or entering the campus. Addressing journalists in front of the gate , the ASUP chairman , Kola Abiola, said the Prof . Peter Okebukola -led committee had directed that over 250 lecturers in MAPOLY should resign and reapply as academic staff members of MAUSTECH . The polytechnic was upgraded to a university status last week by the National Universities Commission , as it handed over the approval certificate to the state governor , Senator Ibikunle Amosun , in Abuja . Abiola further alleged that Okebukola gave the directive during a meeting between members of the committee and the leadership of the union . He said the union did have confidence in the committee . The union leader said the lecturers were open to dialogue with the committee and vowed that they would resist any directive that could lead to the loss of jobs by the members. The Zonal Coordinator of ASUP , Zone C in charge of South West , Adetunji Omobaorun , said the action of the lecturers has the backing and the blessing of the national body. He argued that the government and the committee did not recognise the right and interest of the major stakeholders in their decision . He said , “ The committee and government have refused to give recognition to the plight of major stakeholders and our interest is not their interest . We say no to slave trading in the land of the black .” The State President of the National Association of Nigerian Students , Balogun Olawale , also described the alleged directive “ as wrong” advising that the government should be considerate . However , Okebukola refuted all the claims in a statement he signed in Abeokuta on Wednesday, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent . He said the claims were in contrast to the position of the committee that no member of staff would suffer job loss as a consequence of the upgrading of MAPOLY to MAUSTECH , and the establishment of Ogun State Polytechnic , Ipokia as the successor of MAPOLY . The statement read in part , “ We held a meeting with all staff at the beginning of our assignment and conveyed our position on job security. “ This position has been reechoed in subsequent meetings with staff unions. It is curious that some persons have taken undue liberty of misinforming the general public with the spread of such fake news . “ We have given the good people of Ogun State a pledge that in the shortest possible time , MAUSTECH and Ogun State Polytechnic , Ipokia will be among the brightest stars in the firmament of quality higher education in Nigeria, indeed in Africa . ” http://punchng.com/lecturers-shut-down-mapoly-over-alleged-sacking-of-250-members/ |

A former President , Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, revealed on Saturday that the late dictator , Gen . Sani Abacha wanted him , the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and the June 12 hero , the late Moshood Abiola, dead while in prison . He stated this at a dinner programme organised by an inter - denominational Christian organisation , Christ The Redeemer ’ s Friends International of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 39 Chapter . The former president alleged that Yar ’Adua was poisoned by Abacha ’s killer squad , adding that he was to be next victim , but that he was saved by God ’s divine grace . Obasanjo said , “ Two people had earlier told me Abacha promised that three of us would not come out of prison or detention alive ; myself. Shehu Yar Adua and MKO Abiola. And two of them did not come out alive . So , that I came out alive , maybe God has a purpose. And therefore if the purpose is for me to serve the people and by so doing , serve God, then so be it . “ Abacha claimed that I was plotting a coup. I wasn’ t the first to be arrested . When Shehu ( Yar’Adua ) was arrested , I tried to plead for his release . When Abacha said he didn ’t know about Shehu ’ s arrest , I said to him , ‘the number two man in this country cannot be arrested without you knowing. ’ He then said he would go and find out. “ In Abacha’ s plan , he left God out of it and because he left God out of his plan , it (his government ) eventually failed . There is God’ s hand in the life of each and every one of us and every institution. I believe that very well . “ When I was arrested , they took me to a house in Ikoyi (Lagos ) and that became my abode ( I was ) in isolation , for three months . “ In the meantime , there were national and international pressures for my release , (former US ) President Jimmy Carter was one of the world leaders that came to ask for my release . Some African leaders like Yoweri Museveni and Robert Mugabe came . I believe it was because of those pressures that I was released from isolation in Ikoyi where I was under house arrest .” Obasanjo described the day he was court -martialled and sentenced as one of the ‘worst days in his life . ’ He said , “ I must say that , that day , in a split second , it felt like the worst day in my life . What flashed through my mind was that I was forever ruined. I asked myself, ‘What did I do to deserve this ? Is this what I get for serving Nigeria ?’ But then , I told myself again that this was not done to me by Nigeria, but that one man did it for me.” Obasanjo said he and Yar’ Adua were detained in Jos and Port Harcourt prisons because they were the best prisons in the country at the time . He said , “ I was to go to Jos (prison ) and Yar’Adua was to go to Port Harcourt ( prison ). In Jos , I was visited by my colleagues, including Yakubu Danjuma , Joe Garba, Domkat Bali , many of our colleagues , and then family members and friends. “ Then a decision was made that I was becoming too popular in Jos prison and I had to be transferred to. Yola prison which is a native authority prison and I don ’ t need to tell you what life was there. “ In Jos prison , before I was transferred to Yola prison , they had decided that Shehu Yar’Adua and myself should be poisoned . So , they took him from Port Harcourt prison to Abakaliki . In the process , he was injected with the virus that killed him. The same was supposed to be done to me. The man who came took me from the prison to a guest house in the GRA in Jos , said , ‘We know you have problem with cholesterol so I have to take your blood for a test .’ Then I said , ‘Not on your life , I don ’t have any problem of cholesterol . ’ “ I was slightly diabetic . But God had taken care of it because I was checking my blood sugar almost on a daily basis and it had become better than normal . So , I refused him (the man ) touching me with anything. So , they took me to Yola and he said , ‘ when you get to where you are going , we will come again.’” The former president said he was saved from being poisoned by a doctor and specialist in the prison . “ The doctor was a professional man in charge of the General Hospital in Yola . He listened to my case that I needed special food because I was diabetic . He said the specialist would come to see me. The specialist turned out to be somebody from Okeogun in Oyo State . Two , he was a Baptist , and three , he had heard about me and knew me. So , he looked at me and said , ‘Don ’t let anybody touch you with anything. ’ “ Within three weeks the man that came to me earlier returned again and said he wanted to take my blood . I said , ‘No , you have to get my doctor to come and take my blood for you. ’ That was the arrangement between me and the doctor . And my doctor came and he brought a syringe and he took my blood and gave it to him. He now asked the man , ‘ When would we have the result ?’ The man said , ‘Within 24 hours of my getting to Abuja. ’I haven ’t heard the result till today .” Obasanjo said after his release from prison , he gave into pressure to contest for the presidency and he ended up becoming president for two terms by the grace of God . “ Nigeria that was a pariah state became a darling (of the world ). “ What is the lesson for me? I developed in prison but unfortunately I was not able to sustain it . Maybe because there was nothing else to do in prison except to pray and fast . I used to fast a lot . On three occasions, I fasted for seven days , no water, no food … a unique power was given to me by God . “ In all these , God did not leave me alone, and I know that . I say to people that God has never let me alone nor disappointed me in spite of all . I am a sinner . It is not because of my goodness , but because of the grace of God, and the grace of God continues to abound .” Source: http://punchng.com/abacha-injected-yaradua-with-virus-that-killed-him-obasanjo/ |
