#4 Beyonce Knowles In the last year, Queen B dropped a double album, starred in two films, performed at both the Oscars and a Presidential Inaugural Ball and embarked on what is expected to be, at minimum, a 110-date international tour. She also expanded a fashion collection that includes casual and formal lines as well as jewelry and eyeglasses, and added sponsors Nintendo, Crystal Geyser and General Mills to a roster of endorsers already including L'Oréal, Giorgio Armani and Samantha Thavasa handbags.

#3 Madonna The queen of pop's Hard Candy album tour became the top-grossing international tour of 2008, bringing in $280 million on 58 concerts in 17 countries. Keeping the 50-year old star's name in the papers: a reported love affair with allegedly juiced baseball slugger Alex Rodriquez, the end of her eight-year marriage to director Guy Ritchie, and trouble with her latest attempt to adopt a second African baby.

#2 Oprah Winfrey Though viewership for the self-made billionaire's flagship chat fest, The Oprah Winfrey Show, continues to erode, her earning power remains resilient. In addition to Winfrey's monthly magazine, she has a three-year, $55 million contract with XM Satellite Radio. Her Harpo production company, which spawned the television careers of Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray, will introduce Dr. Mehmet Oz this fall. Months later, she will roll out the lifestyle-themed Oprah Winfrey Network in partnership with Discovery Communications.

#1 Angelina Jolie Eclectic actress and gossip-column favorite dethrones media maven Oprah Winfrey atop this year's Celebrity 100. Jolie has always been able to attract tabloid attention and Oscar nods, but this year, she's finally figured out a way to make serious money. Her most recent blockbuster, Wanted, proved this mother of six's sweet spot is action films; the movie earned $340 million at the box office. Up next: Salt, in which Jolie plays a CIA officer accused of being a spy.

She's rich. She's talented. She's beautiful. And now Angelina Jolie is the most powerful celebrity in the world. Thanks to the release of several blockbuster movies and an endless sea of media buzz, Jolie has dethroned Oprah Winfrey to top this year's Celebrity 100 list, Forbes' annual ranking of the world's ultra famous. Jolie raked in $27 million in the past 12 months thanks to a movie schedule that included "Kung Fu Panda," "Wanted" and the not-yet-released spy thriller "Salt." Even more impressive: The publicity she garnered following the birth of her twins, as well as the consistent headlines she grabs for her philanthropic efforts and her relationship with actor Brad Pitt, who ranks No. 9 on the list. |
Who is watching this series? I think this movie series is action packed too, lots of intrigues and hot.

An Abuja High Court sitting in Gudu yesterday reserved ruling in the bail application of the Chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Power, Senator Nicholas Ugbane, and Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, even as he directed that they should be remanded in prison custody. The accused risk up to 14 years imprisonment if they are found guilty and convicted, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) told the court yesterday. They were sent to prison after the EFCC counsel, Godwin Obla, raised security alarm over their safety and told the court that it could no longer accommodate them. The other accused are the Managing Director of Rural Rlectrification Agency (REA), Samuel Gekpe; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Dr. Abdullahi Aliyu; Simon Nanle, Engr. Lawrence Orekoya, Abdulsamad Jahun, Kayode Oyedeji, Hon. Igwe Paulinus and Hon. Jibo Mohammed. They were arraigned before Justice Abimbola Banjoko on a 157-count charge of alleged criminal breach of trust by making fraudulent withdrawal of various sums of monies purporting same to be contract sums in favour of about 51 companies allegedly owned by their friends and associates. Obla said EFCC was no longer in a position to guarantee the safety of the accused persons considering their status and hype surrounding the trial. “Since the accused are security risk, they should be remanded in prison”, he told the court. source: Daily trust |

March 17, 2009: Saturn's comparatively paper-thin rings are tilted edge on to Earth every 15 years. Because the orbits of Saturn's major satellites are in the ring plane, too, this alignment gives astronomers a rare opportunity to capture a truly spectacular parade of celestial bodies crossing the face of Saturn.

The planet was first discovered in 2007 at the Gemini North observatory. It was identified in the NICMOS archival data in a follow-up search of NICMOS archival data to see if Hubble had also serendipitously imaged it. The planet is young and hot, at a temperature of 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. It is slightly larger than Jupiter and may be at least seven times more massive.

Anyone desiring to join the Nigeria Police Force would have to undergo a psychiatric test before his or her recruitment, Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Lame said in Illorin at the weekend. He spoke at a seminar on behavioural change for the leadership of the police force in Zone 8 and other peer organizations. The minister, who was represented by the Kwara State commissioner of Police Mr. Donald Iroham, also said the expected changes in the force would be hard to achieve as long as it continues to battle for funds from the government. “Psychologists and social workers are interested in knowing why certain aberrant behavioural traits are manifested in some individuals and not in others. Why are some people deviants and others compliant? Why are some people criminals and others law abiding? Is the kind of profession or background of an individual a significant factor in his character make-up? In other words, does the policeman stand in the same psychosocial status as other individual or does his uniform or any other paraphernalia of his job have something to do with the way he thinks or behaves?” Will this new measure sanitize the organization that is regarded to be the most corrupt in Nigeria after PHCN? |
A senator, a Federal Permanent Secretary and three members of the House of Representatives were yesterday slammed with a 156-count charge of fraud and criminal breach of trust before a Federal High Court in Abuja. After five days of hide and seek, Ndudi Elumelu, Committee Chairman on Power and Steel in the House of Representatives, his deputy, Mohammed Jibo and Committee Chairman on Rural Development, Paulinus Igwe reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday in connection with N6bn worth of contracts awarded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). EFCC asked the lawmakers to appear before its investigators last Wednesday but they failed to honour its invitation. They will remain in the custody of the commission until they are arraigned in court tomorrow. A top official in EFCC told Daily Trust that the anti-graft agency has wrapped up its investigations and tomorrow all the suspects fingered in the scam will be prosecuted. Initially, the anti-corruption agency planned to obtain a court warrant to declare the officials wanted if they fail to come and make official statements. Opinion I thought he was a clean man, but let me not be quick to judge him. Let us keep our fingers/legs crossed and see how this "drama" unfolds ![]() http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200905123205721 |
