Foreign Affairs / Britain To Unveil The First LGBT School by Macteejay2(m): 2:49am On Jan 17, 2015
A taxpayer-funded youth group has drawn up controversial plans for Britain’s first school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender pupils.

LGBT Youth North West wants the school to cater for children aged 13 and older who have been bullied and hopes the idea will be copied across the country.

Organisers yesterday denied that the school would become a ‘ghetto’ for gay children and said mainstream schools can be ‘one of the last bastions of homophobia’.

But critics said the move would amount to segregation and would harm efforts to improve tolerance of gay people.

Amelia Lee, the group’s strategic director, said the idea was based on the Harvey Milk School in New York, named after the American politician later played by Sean Penn in a Hollywood movie.

Politics / Ig Orders Re-arrest Of Freed Boko Haram Suspects by Macteejay2(m): 9:09am On Feb 14, 2012
IG orders re-arrest of freed Boko Haram suspects

Meanwhile against the backdrop of Boko Haram’s ceaseless bombing of Police Stations in many northern states and inability of Police personnel to confront them anytime the sect members carried out such raids, Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar yesterday threatened to sanction Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of Operations (AC Ops) as well as those in charge of investigations (AC CIDs) in the states commands over what he described as their inefficiency in tackling or preventing such attacks.

The IG issued the threat even as he directed the immediate dismantling of Police check-points and squads across the country noting that the check points have since deviated from the purpose for which they were established and turned into avenues for corruption and extortion of innocent Nigerians.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the IGP is dissatisfied with the way many cases of Boko Haram suspects arrested in the past by the Police under his predecessors were handled, as many of them were believed to have been let off the hook without proper investigation or commensurate punishment being meted out to them.

Speaking at a meeting with all the AC-Ops and AC- CID’s from the 36 states and Abuja, Abubakar emphasized that the decision to dismantle checkpoints became necessary because it has been abused by Police personnel often posted to man such points.

Describing the situation as unfortunate, the IG particularly mentioned such states as Delta, Lagos, Edo, and the Eastern parts of the country where such cases of extortion and corruption leading to accidental discharge are rampant adding that we cannot continue turn a blind eye to these embarrassing situation.

The IG also took a swipe at Police officers who have come to see corruption as a way of life pointing out that such corrupt tendencies were the causes of extra-judicial killings, in some Police Stations in the country. He therefore demanded a change of attitude from the officers insisting that those who are not willing to move with the wind of change and transformation were free to make a choice of be shown the way out.

On attacks by Boko Haram on Police stations in parts of the country which he regretted were being done with impunity, Abubakar said, ‘it is the inefficiency of assistant Commissioners of Police in some states that has led to this unbridled bombings of police stations in some northern states of late”.

Consequently, he demanded for more commitment, responsiveness, and the willingness on the part of the senior officers, to embrace new initiatives in crime fighting and prevention.

Also, having gone through the case files of scores of Boko Haram suspects arrested in the past for the sects bombings, attacks and destruction of property and the manner they were left to go scot-free, which inadvertently may have embolden the sect members to commit more harm, the IG has constituted a Committee to review all cases of Boko Haram suspects arrested between 2010 till date and were released on bail.

Vanguard gathered that the IGP was not happy with what he saw when he went through the files of all the Boko Haram suspects arrested and the manner many of them were released without conclusive investigations.

He consequently directed the committee to study all the case files, harmonize them and find any possible means of re-arresting the suspects.

Vanguard was told that the IGP expressed the belief that if the investigations were properly carried out and the suspects given appropriate punishment, by now the key members and sponsors of Boko Haram would have been tamed before they got out of hand.

The committee, which has commenced work has since requested all state Police Commissioners state affected by Boko Haram activities to forward all cases of Boko Haram suspects to them.

LAGOS (AFP) – A bomb was thrown into an Arabic school in mainly Christian southern Nigeria, wounding at least seven, police said Wednesday, after Christmas attacks sparked fears of sectarian violence in the country.

“A locally made low-capacity explosive was thrown into an Arabic school in Sapele at 10:00 pm yesterday,” said state police spokesman Charles Mouka.

“It was thrown from an unidentified moving car … Six children and one adult were wounded. They are receiving treatment in the hospital. No deaths were recorded and no arrests have been made.”

The children are between five and eight years old, he said. They had been at the school for night Arabic and Koranic lessons, said Mouka.

Christmas bombings occurred in several locations in Nigeria blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram that killed 40 people, with the deadliest an explosion outside a church near the capital Abuja as services were ending.

Nigerian leaders have been seeking to calm tensions amid fears the Christmas attacks could set off sectarian violence in a country roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

The area around the school, which has about 50 students, has been cordoned off, Mouka said.

“We have swept it clean and recovered unexploded bits of the explosives for investigation,” he said. “We are collaborating with other security agencies to ensure we do not have a repeat of the incident.”

Crime / Zimbabwe Women Accused Of Raping Men 'for Rituals' by Macteejay2(m): 3:27pm On Nov 28, 2011
Zimbabwean police believe there is a nationwide syndicate of women raping men, possibly to use their semen for use in rituals that claim to make people wealthy.

It has taken more than a year for any arrests to be made, and on Monday three women are to go on trial in the capital, Harare, over the allegations which have shocked the country.

One alleged victim, who wished to remain anonymous, gave an account on national television in July of his experience which happened after he was offered a lift by a group of three women in Harare.

The urge to have sex was still there”

Alleged male rape victim

"One of the women threw water in my face and they injected me with something that gave me a strong sexual desire," he said.

"They stopped the car and made me have sex with each of them several times, using condoms.

"When they had finished they left me in the bush totally naked.

"Some people gathering grass helped me by calling the police, who took me to hospital to deal with the effects of this drug that I had been given, as the urge to have sex was still there."

The women due in court have been charged on 17 counts of aggravated indecent assault - as Zimbabwean law does not recognise the act of a woman raping a man.

They were detained earlier this month in the central town of Gweru, 275km (170 miles) south-west of Harare, after officers found 31 used condoms in the car that they were travelling in.

Threatening crowds

The women deny the charges, saying they are prostitutes and were too busy at the time to dispose of the condoms.
People standing by mini bus taxis in Harare, Zimbabwe Since the reports of male rapes, some men say they no longer hitch hike and prefer to use buses

After being released on bail last month, they were confronted and threatened by a crowd. They say they have been forced to remain at home since then, to avoid unwanted attention.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri told the BBC that they believe that there is a syndicate operating nationwide.

"We have received reports from around the country from different towns and provinces, it's been happening on the highways," he said.

"We are yet to find out the real reason why this is happening. We have heard speculation that it's linked to rituals."

He appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"We need to hear from people who are prepared to tell," the superintendent said.

The semen is believed to be used in rituals to bring success in business, and there are suggestions that the semen is being taken outside the country for sale.

But cultural expert and sociology lecturer Claude Mararikei told the BBC that it was not clear how the semen would be used.

"It's in the area of rituals and magic, which border on secret societies," he said.

"Even researchers don't want to go into that area because you may not come out alive to publish whatever you find out."
'Wife left me'

While the first accounts of men alleging that they had been raped by women were generally met with incredulity, men who spoke to the BBC say that they are now taking the issue very seriously.

I think there has been a lot of under-reporting because the victims will feel not man enough to talk about such issues and that will hinder them from speaking out”

Nakai Nengomasha Counsellor

"When I travel I only use buses where people are travelling in numbers now, I won't get a lift in private cars, especially if there are women inside," said a man called Witness.

"You must exercise caution, women are raping men, it's happening."

Some women in Harare, like Sibongile, worry it is giving their gender a bad image.

"I wish that people could be encouraged to work for their money in a good way. It's evil that's gone into women's heads to cause them to be that greedy, that they want easy money," she told the BBC in the city centre.

The police have not given a figure for the number of cases reported.

Nakai Nengomasha, a counsellor who is working with three men who say that they are victims of female rapists, believes that there could be more cases who have not come forward.

"I think there has been a lot of under-reporting because the victims will feel not man enough to talk about such issues and that will hinder them from speaking out," he said.

"They need to deal with denial which comes from a deeply rooted mistaken belief that men are immune to being victimised and that they should be able to fight back if they are truly a real man.

"Some have to deal with the issue of seeing the assault as a loss of manhood and feel disgusted with themselves."

That is how the man who spoke about his alleged ordeal on television feels, saying he even contemplated suicide.

"I feel violated and disappointed, because when I told my wife what happened, she left me, together with one of our three children. I'm hoping that she will come back."

First Lady Michelle Obama tells iVillage that her hubby, 50, doesn't like Sasha, 10, and Malia, 13, keeping up with Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian's antics on the boob tube.

Michelle, 47, says that like most parents, she and Barack regulate how much TV their daughters watch and what they're allowed to see. "Barack really thinks some of the Kardashians -- when they watch that stuff -- he doesn't like that as much," she told iVillage.

"But I sort of feel like if we're talking about it, and I'm more concerned with how they take it in -- what did you learn when you watched that," Michelle explained. "And if they're learning the right lessons, like, that was crazy, then I'm like, okay.

Education / No Nigerian University Among Top 400 Universities by Macteejay2(m): 10:57am On Oct 19, 2011
Harvard University may be America's top-ranked national university, along with Princeton University, in U.S.News & World Report's latest Best Colleges rankings, but a competitor across the pond is now stealing some of that thunder.

For the second year in a row, the United Kingdom's University of Cambridge topped Harvard in the U.S. News World's Best Universities rankings, released today and based on data from the 2011 QS World University Rankings. Developed by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a leading global career and education network, the World's Best rankings showcase the top international universities, from North and South America to Europe and Asia and beyond.

Six distinct indicators were evaluated to rank the top 400 universities worldwide: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, proportion of international faculty, proportion of international students, and citations per faculty. The gap between Cambridge and Harvard was incredibly small--a difference of about 0.7 points in their overall scores--and can be attributed to Cambridge's more impressive faculty-student ratio.

Despite Harvard falling slightly behind a U.K. university, U.S. schools dominated the top 400 list, with six American institutions appearing in the top 10 (Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University). The highest showing by a non-American or non-British university was Canada's McGill University, at No. 17. Asia's highest ranking came via University of Hong Kong (HKU), at No. 22.

A separate ranking of the top 100 Asian universities highlights the dynamism of the Asian region, where countries such as China, South Korea, and India are investing heavily in higher education to cater to both domestic and international students. This year, to better reflect the region's unique character, a distinct methodology from the top 400 global rankings was used, with indicators such as Asian academic reputation and Asian employer review.

The leaders of the pack came from Hong Kong, with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and HKU taking the first and second spots, respectively. The gap between the two was very narrow--a difference of 0.2 points in their overall scores--with HKUST's research productivity giving it the edge. Japan, whose economy is slowly recovering from the devastating March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, was nonetheless dominant in the Asian rankings, with five Japanese schools in the top 10.

Meanwhile, China, the world's largest source for international students at U.S. universities, made strides with its own schools. Peking University and Tsinghua University were both among the top 20 best Asian universities, performing very well in the academic and employer reputation indicators. India didn't fare as well, due to low citations scores; its highest entries were three Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Kanpur, Delhi, and Bombay) at No. 36, No. 37, and No. 38, respectively.

Like Asia, Latin America is undergoing significant development, propelled by rising economic powerhouse Brazil. The country's Universidad de São Paulo took the No. 1 spot in the top 100 Latin American universities rankings, beating Chile's Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile by 0.4 points in its overall score. The new Latin rankings use a distinct methodology, evaluating indicators such as Latin American academic reputation, Latin American employer review, and proportion of staff with Ph.D.'s.

Brazil was the clear leader, fielding three institutions in the top 10 and eight in the top 20. The country's huge investments in higher education to fuel economic growth, and its prioritization of research, have paid off: Brazilian universities performed particularly well in measures such as papers per faculty and proportion of academics with Ph.D.'s.

Meanwhile, Mexico--with two institutions in the top 10 of the Latin rankings--showcased strong reputations across the region, despite lower performance in research measures for most of its universities. The fifth-ranked Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) had the highest academic reputation, while seventh-ranked Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) had the second-highest employer reputation.

Going beyond global and regional comparisons, the new World's Best Universities subject rankings examine the top schools worldwide in 24 subjects (top 30 for chemical engineering and top 50 for all other subjects). Divided into five broad categories--arts and humanities; engineering and technology; life sciences; natural sciences; and social sciences--the individual subject rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation, and citations per paper.

MIT dominated all engineering and technology rankings, taking the top spot in the computer science; civil engineering; chemical engineering; electrical engineering; and mechanical, aeronautical, and manufacturing engineering fields. Other American institutions that had strong showings in that category include Stanford University, University of California--Berkeley, and California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

U.S. universities similarly led the pack in two other broad categories: life sciences and social sciences. In the former, Harvard took the lead in biological sciences and psychology; in the latter, while Harvard took the No. 1 spot atop the accounting and finance; economics and econometrics; politics and international studies; and sociology rankings, Stanford topped the statistics and operational research rankings.

Prisoner exchange Live
Q&A: Shalit release deal
Timing key to release deal
A 1,000-to-one asymmetry

Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit has arrived back in Israel following his release from five years' captivity, as part of a prisoner exchange deal.

Sgt Shalit was first taken from Gaza to Egypt, where he was released to Israeli officials and later crossed the border.

Meanwhile the first of 477 Palestinians to be released on Tuesday have arrived in Gaza amid rapturous scenes.

Another 550 jailed Palestinian are to be freed next month under the deal between Israel and Hamas.

Sgt Shalit, 25, was seized in 2006 by Hamas militants who tunnelled into Israel.

Early on Tuesday he was taken to the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, and handed over to Egyptian mediators by Hamas, in the presence of Israeli representative.

In his first interview, Sgt Shalit told Egyptian TV he missed his friends and family. Looking drawn and pale, he said he hoped the exchange would help bring peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Sgt Shalit was then transferred to the Kerem Shalom crossing between Egypt and Israel.

He made a phone call to his parents before being flown to the Tel Nof airbase.

Initial medical examinations found Sgt Shalit to be in a stable condition.

At Tel Nof he is to have further medical checks and meet relatives, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

If he is declared it, Sgt Shalit will then be flown with his family to northern Israel and escorted by convoy to his hometown of Mitzpe Hila.

Meanwhile, about 180 of the 295 Palestinians due to be sent to Gaza have arrived in the territory.

Celebrations to welcome them have begun, with an estimated 200,000 people gathered in Gaza City.

The former prisoners first crossed by bus into Egypt from Kerem Shalom, before being met at the Rafah crossing by relatives and friends, as well as Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya.

Phones / Blackberry Services Down In Europe, Middle East And Africa by Macteejay2(m): 4:29pm On Oct 10, 2011
Millions of Blackberry owners across Europe, the Middle East and Africa have been left without services following a server crash.

Owners of the smartphones were unable to browse the web, send email or instant messages.

The problem appears to have originated in a datacentre in Slough which handles Blackberry services for the affected regions.

Blackberry UK said it knew about the problem and was "investigating".

In a tweet sent around 14:42 BST, the company said: "Some users in EMEA are experiencing issues."

A subsequent statement said Blackberry was: "working to resolve an issue currently impacting some Blackberry subscribers in Europe Middle East and Africa."

It apologised for the inconvenience that the ongoing problem was causing its customers.

Earlier on 10 October mobile operators in the UK, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and other nations pointed the finger at Blackberry owner RIM when replying to tweets from customers complaining about the problems.

The first signs of trouble emerged about 11:00 BST but seemed to have escalated with tags about Blackberry and its BBM service trending on Twitter.

The only functioning service on Blackberry seemed to be text messaging, prompting many users to voice their frustration online.
