They were misinformed.According to wikipedia and the IFFHS website, the IFFHS top scorer award is given to most international goals scored in a year(UCL,USC,FCWC,International friendly and tournaments).Messi won it in 2011,2012(25 goals) while Ronaldo won it in 2013(25 goals) and is likely to win in 2014(20 goals).

The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has presented the awards for the year 2013

Messi has been honoured as the highest goalscorer in the world’s main football leagues, and Iniesta as the best playmaker in the world
On Friday, Andrés Iniesta and Leo Messi received the awards at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper from Robert Ley, vice-president of the International Federation of Football History & Statistics. Iniesta has been announced as the best playmaker in the world and Messi as the top goalscorer in the world’s biggest leagues.

This is the second consecutive time that Iniesta has won the award after he also collected it in 2012, thus succeeding his team-mate Xavi Hernández, who has won it four times. Messi has also won his award for the second time in a row. He takes the IFFHS award for 2013 thanks to his 46 goals in 32 games in 2013.

penalties are easy bro. players miss penalties yes,but 8 out of every 10 penalties are scored while probably only 4 out of every 10 goal attempts are scored. nobody is disputing who has higher goals but all we are saying is that ronaldo's goal records are always padded by penalties right from the time of adam, while messi's goal records hardly include that insane amount of pk's.

yes of course fifa says penalties are full and legit goals but we as football fans have the common sense and disgression to know that a penalty goal is a bonanza esp when the penalty is won by a separate player from the one who takes it or when the player dives to win the pk. And more often than not, the diving player, be it a cristiano ronaldo, an ashley young, a neymar or a de maria gets away with the simulation since the umpire could never be allowed to use camera replay to punish the diver.

the mathematics you should be doing is subtracting penalties from real goals. Yes, it is the work of the referee to prevent offsides and handballs, but there is little or nothing he could do about a player who consistently transforms the 18 yard box into an 18 yard swimming pool.

And what can we do when the refs that are supposed to prevent that have already been paid. I guess you watch Madrid and Barca matches this season! One team can score from offside position, win outrageous penalty, have their players dive any how they want and still go away with it. While the other team will even have thier ligit goals rule out for offside, legit penalty waved off by same refs. So it very easy for one to score more than the other sir.
