THE NEW DAWN


Sitting, relaxed, atop the cool grass-filled rock,

Jutting out proudly over the calm blue ocean,

I stared in stoned-wonder; held captive

By the magnificent rising of the yellow sun,

Ascending, gracefully, across the serene horizon,

And ushering in the bright and long awaited new world;

A world, free from the shackles of religion,

Unheld by the chains of ethnicity;

Devoid of the differences in colour.

A world wrapped up in the warm covers of peace;

Overshadowed by the immutable display of inestimable love.

A world tongue-deep in sincere equality;

Lacking the Political, Social, and Economic segregations;

Where none is poor or hungry; a violence-free

Community – where morality stands overall; scoring

On all points; in all ramifications.

I see a world where there are no foes – but friends;

Where the Lions lie closely with the Lambs –

Sharing, caring; and rapturously cherishing one another;

A world where the natural unites with the

Supernatural to form a universal positive whole –

Stamped with truth and justice.

This new world, which I speak of, begins with you!

LISTEN NIGERIA


Once again, we are on the runway – threading with mixed

Zeal through the blustery lane of segmentation;

Set to bear opaque witness to the sectionalized

Process of fetid national representation.

The virulent goons are studiously converging –

Canvassing vehemently for the solid fold

Of the foot-matted objects – with the deep-seated

Gold pot, strung securely to the multifarious

Fabric of not-to-be-executed constructions.

As expected, many ‘lackers’ have easily veered

Off the clean course – choosing to remain the puppets.

The rest hangs, confused, at the cross-road of indecision.

Our ‘army of truth’ is slowly been depleted by the

Spot-aimed, honey-dipped, bullets of conversion.

It’s time to brashly tune up our vocal strings – tightly

Bolting our inimitable nuts – for the sake of our

Beloved Republic – for the survival of our ‘Only’ Home.

The much-awaited revolution must begin – without a blink – now!

A revolution that begins with you!

HARMATTAN



Rising just too early;

Like a cold and thick broom,

It sweeps across angrily

At my unprotected feet.




An icy feel; an onrushing sound;

A white slap to my face.

Its unmerciful hands,

Cold, just too cold!




Out in the 'mean' open,

It moves recklessly;

A blinding dust,

Riding on nature’s wheel.




Icicles in my nostrils,

And foam on my tongue,

As I succumbed to the cold embrace

Of the harmattan haze.

OUR NIGERIA


For decades Africa’s most glamorous child has

Been floundering around – groping for national equilibrium,

Under the inflamed blanket of corruption;

Attempting to flick on the switches of progression –

While still harboring the dark masters of regression.

Their innocuous game-plan has always been decked with

The fragrance of avarice – scorning the people on all points.

It’s time to stop grousing, and to start acting;

Severing the bonds that has, for so long, held us captives

In the strident cells of religion and ethnicity –

Churning us unnecessarily against one another –

Thus creating a diversion from the real dictatorial

Forces, hell-bent on shattering the glass of our unity.

Across the horizon beams the true light of

Liberation – meticulously searching for credible

Agents of righteousness; readily present as

Willing mediums to dispel these storekeepers of darkness.

There’s an urgent need to rope hands with the right reformers;

An urgent need that begins with you!

MIDNIGHT STORM


It’s pitch dark, and

The rain come cascading ferociously;

Like sharp knives, slicing through the air,

At breakneck speed;

Droplets, each as heavy as a coin,

Cold!





A boisterious wind walks by;

Trees and their young ones pay, total, obeisance.

The animals are in hiding,

Scared to the scalps,

With mouths in their hearts,

And none, obdurate.






The sky, in an angry mood,

Looks fiercely with lightning,

And screams in rage with thunder,

Daring any to utter a word.

All hold their peace,

As mother-nature breathes out her heat.

Cogitating on the miscellany of problems

Bedeviling our cautiously-created federation

Shoots round zillions of doleful spikes on the inside;

Pointing tirelessly to the abundant deposits of

Natural and Human wealth – enviable beyond doubt.

Regrettably, the arrow of development has been

Repeatedly thrown, solely, against the crude element –

Enriching only a handful – the real gang of terrorists!

Our remaining elements have been dumped on the

Back burner – cast into the pit of oblivion.

Our adroit minds are absent; but present in

Many an alien environment – serving as loyal tools

Of positive prosperity; justifiably forsaking their

Fatherland – who has woefully failed to avail them

Conducive conditions to express their superb ingenuity.

How long shall we continue to brook these intolerable

Beasts – squirming as derision-objects in the cauldrons of lack?

This seamy trend must cease; our dithering must cease.

The moment to enroll with the intrepid has come;

To make a choice, bound to alter our history’s course for the best.

I hear it clearly

From far away;

A distant land – not too distant.

It is close enough

For me to understand.





I reel in excitement,

Fired up with anticipation;

Hot sweat, coursing down

My pitch dark skin.

Like the eagles,’

To merge with that unearthly sound.
