Why Do People Live Underground?

In the summer, temperatures can reach 125°F in the shade. That's dangerously hot!

The early opal miners who built their homes above ground tried to adapt to the harsh climate, which was extremely hot in the day and very cold at night.

Soon, however, they were inspired to live underground in caves bored into the hillsides, known as 'dugouts', where the temperature would be constant and neither too hot nor too cold.

Dugouts remain at a constant temperature, while surface buildings need air conditioning, especially during the summer months. Underground homes stay cool naturally — no electricity bills for air conditioning!

How Many People Live Underground?

About 60% of the population live underground in this opal-mining center. Today it is home to around 3,500 residents — most of whom live in subterranean 'dugouts'.

What's Underground?

It's not just homes! Here's what you can find underground in Coober Pedy:

1. Houses with bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms
2. Underground churches (the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church)
3. Hotels where tourists can sleep underground
4. A bookshop
5. Museums
6. Even someone with an underground swimming pool in their home!

A standard three-bedroom cave home with lounge, kitchen, and bathroom can be excavated out of the rock in the hillside for a price similar to building a house on the surface.

Why Is The Town There?

Coober Pedy is sometimes called the "opal capital of the world" because of the quantity of precious opals mined there. Australia has 95% of the world's supply of commercial opal and the largest percentage by mass comes from the 70-odd opal fields around Coober Pedy.

People came looking for these beautiful, valuable stones and decided to stay — underground!

What Does "Coober Pedy" Mean?

The name "Coober Pedy" comes from the Kokatha-Barngarla term kupa-piti, which translates to "whitefellas' hole". It literally means "white man's hole" — named because of all the holes miners dug into the ground!

He wanted to claim surgery fee and the woman family changed it for him cos she actually heard her baby cry before going unconscious. He had to settle to settle them as he don cast. They’re dubious and very tricky. That’s why most people always default cos they feed on the weakness of others.

They’re pure evil and my own annoyance is when they perpetually call and message you to come borrow with some coupons of free days of interest. That’s how they tricked me into borrowing 260k telling me I have 12 days free coupon, I borrowed without even needing it but wanted to increase my credibility with them,paid back on the eleventh day and to my surprise they started messaging and calling me to pay up an interest of 76+ 😂.
