hello I am new to this forum but I just wanted to clarify the issue of acquiring British citizenship. if you are a child of a British citizen or a settled person in the UK, it does not matter which of the parents has the citizenship as the laws changed in July 2006.

firstly if a child was born after July 2006 to a parent who is a British citizen or a person settled in the uk, that child automatically is a British citizen and it does not matter which of the two parents , and you do not need to be married for the child to acquire citizenship.

secondly if the child was born before July 2006 then the child will need to apply for indefinite leave to remain and after a year of holding it the child can then apply to naturalise.

another thing to know is that if the child was born before any of the two parents became settled in the uk and the child was born after July 2006 then the child will only need to naturalise as a British citizen.

I have been in the same situation and applied for naturalisation for my child first child and he acquired it from his father and we were not married and the second one automatically acquired it from me after I had my indefinite leave.

Please refer to the home office website. I hope this information is helpful.
Thank you so much for the clarification. I was of the opinion that the child's parents had to be married because they made us prove we were married with photos from our wedding, marriage certificate, pictures of us before, and after the baby and proof that my husband was responsible for our upkeep. Maybe when the baby is born outside the UK the rules are different. Thanks for clearing that up @sister2007

@Lexusgs430....Are u saying that if the father is British and the mother Nigerian that the child can no longer be British? Pls can you explain further? Is there a link to where we can read this?
The British father and Nigerian mother have to be married to get the baby to be a citizen. However if it's the mother that is British it is automatic. We got a british passport for our son who was born in Nigeria last year and it took about 14 weeks from start to finish. You have to attend an interview in Lagos towards the tail end with the baby. Goodluck

Hi @saratkum from most people's timelines, I observed that the 12 weeks started from the date of the biometrics. I applied a few weeks after you. Fingers crossed we are all successful.
