In the context of the quranic verse, the word 'preserve' carries the monotone of the mommies of Egypt. The quran says "in the flesh/body". There is no way you will destroy the idols in a pagan temple and instead of constructing a new place of worship, mohammed chose to carry on the tradition of the Quraysh by not only referring to his god as allah but instituting the ka'aba (the temple of Hubal) as his new place of worship.
