Stop panicking when a loan App or moneylender posts your Obituary poster when you are still alive.


It's a common practice for some moneylenders to design and post a borrower's Obituary poster simply because the borrower defaulted in repayment.

Some make posters tagging you, "WANTED".

This act is a serious criminal offence. It is a crime to intentionally and publicly declare someone dead when he/she is still alive.

It is even a more serious offence when done in the cyber space such as social media platforms.

If a moneylender threatens to post your obituary poster just to make you tensed and repay, tell whoever that called or contacted you that you will take legal actions against the caller or the organisation.

Spreading fake news or deliberately misleading information is a criminal act in Nigeria.

Those behind it can be arrested, charged, and sentenced to imprisonment under the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

They will go in for nothing less than 7 years.

Their money lending license will be withdrawn and the company can be deregistered.

"We just want to shake him so he can pay up" is not a defence in law.

Remember, ignorance of the law is not an excuse.

If a borrower defaults, it is advisable to follow legal procedures to recover your money. There is no shortcut to justice!

On the other hand, I will also advise the borrower to also make reasonable efforts to repay.

If the money lender came through for you when you needed funds, don't frustrate the lender when refund is needed.

If you can sue, you should be able to repay your debt.

I have been meticulously following this issues long before Tinubu got into Aso Rock.

I know that the Obidients would see this from another perspective. But whichever angle that they choose to see it, nobody should diminish the significance of paying pensioners what they are legally owed. If truly, the Federal Government has settled N39.63 billion in outstanding pension liabilities, that is a welcome development. Pensioners should never have had to wait this long.

But Nigerians should also reject the attempt to rewrite history for political convenience.

The collapse of NITEL was not the handiwork of one man. It was a cocktail of years of bad governance (some of which the APC government played a role), political interference, failed reforms, weak management, corruption and multiple unsuccessful privatisation efforts across different administrations. Again, reducing that complex history to “Atiku sold NITEL, Tinubu paid the bill” is political propaganda, not serious historical analysis at all. Don’t do this!

More importantly, please and please, these pensions are not acts of charity by any President. They are LEGAL obligations owed by the Nigerian state to workers who earned them decades ago. Governments are continuous. When today’s government pays yesterday’s debts, it is fulfilling a constitutional responsibility. It not doing pensioners any personal favour.

Does this current administration deserves credit for finally paying these arrears. Big YES. But it does not need to manufacture a political villain to justify doing what every responsible government ought to have done years ago. We need to move away from this Akara and Kuli Kuli type politics.

Public communication should inform citizens, not use pensioners’ hardship as campaign material. I tell you this for a fact, Nigerians deserve facts, context and accountability, not trying to give us all this selective history packaged as political triumph.

From Ngozi Okonjo Nwela to Dora Akunyili, Femi Adesina, Lamido, Nuhu Ribadu, Bola Ige and others that we can't just easily forget today...I will conclude that Obasanjo had one of the best hands working with him. He took time to select the best of the best because he wasn't so much rooted in Nigerian politics to the extent that he would allow the party leaders to control or influence the selection process.

In this administration, apart from Olubunmi Ojo, Festus Keyamo and 2 other ministers, none of them has really impressed me so far. A good leader will easily flow with selecting the best team that would work with him. The selection should be done effortlessly.

Be smart enough to prepare for your future. The government has no special plans for your future. Your pension won't be enough to take you through one or two years. No school taught me this, I learnt this on the job from my senior colleagues who are now retired.

I know that Obidients won't like this thread. I can remember sevel uniformed men and women who were killed because Nnamdi Kanu ordered them to do so. I lost a lot of my colleagues who were breadwinners of their various homes. All these may just be to distract Nigerians before and during the incoming election.

I can remember how Friday used to be back in the days. As a school kid, your school uniform has to be dirty after school. We used to look up to Friday for several activities. Nothing gives you joy more than the knowledge that there won't be school on Saturday and Sunday.

I know this house. It is very close to where I live presently. Good area, how much is the last price?

An agent took me to this house, I met with the Landlords wife as they claim the Landlord travelled to Abuja.

I paid total package of 1.5 Million Naira, they gave me the keys and I painted the apartment already and moved in my load, but I needed to seal my transfer from my office to this new state.

Only for me to get here yesterday and the Landlord has locked up the apartment. I asked what happened, he said the wife has spent out of the money I paid for rent and as he speaks he did not want to rent out the apartment to anyone as it belongs to him, that I should come and pack my Load and collect all my money from the wife.

So I asked the wife for my money, she says she has spent 700k out of the money and she will pay me 100k every month.

I don't even know if i should laugh or cry.I just walked away and decide to hear from mature people here before i know what to do. My load is still in the apartment as we speak and I have spent nothing less than 250k for painting and movement of my Load to the place.

A TENANT WON LANDLORD IN COURT AND GOT 5 MILLION NAIRA AS DAMAGES

Landlord paid 3M and agreed that the tenant should stay for three years to cover for the balance of 2M.

This is a recent case that happened Last year

A tenant installed Solar Panels on the roof without seeking approval from the Landlord, the Landlord got to know from other tenants.

Out of anger, the Landlord called some boys to bring down the solar panels when the tenant wasn't around, those boys threw the panel from the roof to the ground and damaged the panels

Tenant approach fhe court and filed for Malicious Damage

Landlord approach the court and file for tenants eviction for making structural alterations to his building without his approval

Two case in different court at the same time

For the Landlord case, the court ask the Landlord if there is any clause in the tenancy agreement where you ask the tenant not to install solar panel on the roof.

The landlord informed the court that he did not give the tenant any tenancy agreement.

The tenant argued that no rule had been broken because there was no restrictions that had been documented or communicated.

The court made a simple point, where there is no agreement, the court can not invent one for the parties.

Oga Landlord lost his own case.

Back to the tenant own,
Tenant seek legal advice from Atanda.
With Advice from Atanda, Tenant was able to prove to the court that six panels got damaged, the charge controller and the inverter got damaged resulting from breach of wires as they throw those panels down.

One neighbour stood as witness, three people from the next compound stood as witness, CCTV footage from the building facing them was presented as suporting evidence.

Na so Landlord enter wahala

Court awarded 4 million naira damages against the Landlord.

Landlord appealed the case and Court of Appeal upheld the judgement but increased the Damages to 5 Million Na!ra.

Na so tenant take collect 3M cash and three years free rent.

You are owing someone money and the person brought Police to arrest you, this is what you should do.

At first, the police have no legal authority to arrest you for a simple debt, as it is a civil matter and not a criminal offense. According to the Police Act 2020 and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), the police are strictly prohibited from interfering in civil disputes or acting as debt collectors

Meaning that, the Police officer the person brought to arrest you, is on illegal duty and is on a mission to perform illegal arrest.

So at this point.

1. Ask the Police officer for his ID and take note of his name

2. Calmly tell the officer it's a civil matter

3. If the officer insist on arresting you, don't resist the arrest. Follow him

4. If they ask you to sign any undertaking of when you will pay back, sign it

That undertaking is not enforceable anywhere, so no fear at all

Once you are out

File a suit against the person you owe and the Police Officer for breach of your fundamental human right and illegal arrest with unlawful detention

In the suit, demand for damages of 50 Million Naira

At 52, my guy even looks good to warm up and prepare to run for office in his state either as Governor (Head of a sub-national) or Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic where he can be very useful considering his police experience and legal background to push for rapid reforms in the Policing sector by lending his stellar credentials to national service.

When the Super Eagles are out to play, no one speaks of federal character or why there are more Igbos in the squad compared to Northerners. No one asks why there is none of the team members from Borno State or Osun or Jigawa! All we as Nigerians are after, is always results and victories. So why don’t we apply that in the national discourse as well? Even the “Muslim-Muslim” ticket that was sold to the nation, have we ever seen the politicians going to share the federal or state or LG allocations at the national mosque? If we are after results, we must first replace politics with merit and allow those behind a chance to also get elevated as well.

About Frank Mba, regardless of how fit or handsome he may be for the role of IGP, let’s always remember the holdup such decisions may cause for the entire Police Force that is hugely understaffed and under-motivated. We are still battling with a deficiency of less than 400,000 police men (officers/other ranks) for an entire population of about 250 million Nigerians.

Moderators of the Health and Career section are not fully active. There are some important threads that they fail to move to front page even after calling their attention to it. Also, monetization of front page contents for the posters is not a bad idea because some people put extra efforts to prepare the contents that they post on each section. I think I have an idea to make the monetization process easier; let the criteria for being a moderator be based on the number of front page worthy post a poster has made. For example, you may say, if you have up to 20 posts that have made front page within a particular period, you would be automatically eligible to become a moderator. Then your moderators could go through some training to know more about the work culture and ethics of the forum. After that, you can put them on weekly or monthly payment with a target of post to make on a daily or periodic basis. This will make posting of contents look more original, professional, competitive and entertaining with different styles and enthusiasm because of the money involved.

Then as for the advertisement which is the soul of the forum. I suggest that there should be some sponsored adverts in form of thread and not just the usual advert banners on top of the thread section. When visiting each page, many people like me just focus on the thread section and read through the lines of each thread without looking up for advert. To be sincere with you, I cant remember the last time I have seen or glanced at any advert here on Nairaland but I am active on the pages everyday. Let the attention of advert be diverted to sponsored posts. The advertiser con choose to write the content and use some images (graphics) as illustration. Advertisers can also consult the moderators for creation of contents of sponsored post. This is another way for moderators to earn money. Let me stop here for now and allow other users to make suggestions. I hope these help.

After taking my time to read all the suggestions and ideas from page one to this page, I think this is the best of them all. In fact, I think you should contact the poster in case there are more specific details to give on the ideas. I'm more attracted to this because it focuses on 2 major parts of this forum which are content creation/generation and revenue generation. Nairaland can't survive without these. The points raised would make Nairaland more interesting because there will be more professional posts, original contents, not just copy and paste and competitive because many people would want to do everything possible to earn the badge of a moderator.

Also, the revenue generation part is also fantastic but I will suggest that the banners should still be there while there are also sponsored posts from advertisers. However, there should be a form of regulation or control to the number of sponsored posts that would be posted in a day or else the front page would just be flooded with different sponsored posts...though it means more money to @seun but boring for the users. The style of writing of the sponsored post should be handled by creative moderators so as to ensure that it is not boring for the readers.

When things work in your favour, it is your birth right, but when it is not in your favour, it becomes a case of marginalization, oppression, nepotism, etc. The same way many ADC members were complaining about the recent election in Rivers State because it didn't work for them. If ADC had won the election, I am sure the story would be different, the election would have been described as the best in the history of Nigerian democracy. In 2023, President Tinubu loss to LP in the Presidential Election and nobody talked about the mass rigging of election result in Lagos in the Igbo Community in Lagos.

It is okay. So, when former President Olusegun Okikiola Obasanjo ordered some Yoruba Monarchs to stand up and greet during the commissioning of the 34.85 km Oyo-Iseyin Road in Oyo State, none of the kings was bold enough to challenge him. This is concerning. Who and who are the Kingmakers/ IFA Oracle/Governors selecting as our Obas these days? I am sure that they are just selfishly selecting thier loyalists and not just those chosen by the gods.

OBJ was unhappy that the kings didn't rise to greet Governor Seyi Makinde, saying it's essential to show respect to those in positions of authority. This incident sparked controversy, with some Nigerians criticizing Obasanjo's behavior as disrespectful to the monarchs. After the event, The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, condemned Obasanjo's actions, calling it an "affront" and "desecration" of Yoruba traditional stools.
